Scott Peck April 2016 Volumn 7 Issue 2 Labette Center for Mental Health Services Hires Behaviorist for Integrated Care at Labette Health Labette Center for Mental Health Services is pleased to announce that they have hired a behaviorist for the  position created through a grant from the Sunow- er Foundat ion fo r integrat ed care. Amber Hughes, LMSW, has been hired as the behaviorist in this new and cutting edge appro ach to care. Amber will be sta- tioned at Labette Health Family Practice Clinic, work- ing hand in hand with the medical professionals in that department. Originally from Neosho County , Amber holds a BS in Psychology and Legal Issues from Pitts-  burg State Uni versity and a MSW from Missouri State University. This form of integrated care is a cutting edge approach to patient care that integrates both physical and behav- ioral health. As described by the Sun ower Foundation, “Integrat ed health care is the systematic coordination of primary care (medical) and behavioral health ser- vices. Medical and behavioral health problems often occur at the same time. Simul- taneously providing relevant health care services has been shown to yield the best results and are welcomed by patients.” Kansas, with the assistance of the Sunower Foundation, has been a leader in the integrated care initiati ve. The process Labette Center will use to provide thi s care will be to utilize the behaviorist stationed at Labette Health Medical Ofce Building to see patients who may also be in need of behavi oral health care. This person will  be available to see patients as needed when they visit a provider at the medi cal facil- ity . This provides the opportunity for two systems to work together hand in hand to  provide t his servi ce to those in need. By creating this co ntinuum o f care, individuals will be able to receive the care they need while at the doctor ’s ofce and the oppor - tunity to be referred to the mental health center to further their treatment if needed. “This is an exciting time for behavioral health care in Labette County,” stated Mat- thew Atteberr y, LSCSW, executive directo r of Labette Center. “By receiving this grant we have been given the ability to provide the best overall care by working hand in hand with the medical community .” Continued on Page 2 “Integrated Care”

Services, in partnership with the Kansas Foundation forMedical Care (KFMC,) will offer a free workshop series

or people living with diabetes as well as their caregivers.

The six-week workshop series helps people gain self-con-

dence in controlling their symptoms, better manage their

health and lead a fuller life.

The workshops are highly interactive and promote the de-

velopment of skills necessary to lead a healthy life with

diabetes. The workshop series is designed to complement

medical treatments and education provided by healthcare

providers. People living with diabetes and their caregiverswho attend the workshop series will receive a free copy of

he book, Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions.

Class will be starting in May. An informational meeting for

he for the workshop, called a Zero Meeting, will be held

on May 17th at 2pm at the Rector Center, Hyw 59, Parsons

KS. The workshop will then run from May 24th through

June 28th. This workshop will be presented by Jenn

Mental Health First Aid CourseJune 29th, 2016

Labette Center for Mental Health Services will be

holding an Adult Mental Health First Aid course on

Wednesday June 29th, 2016 from 8:00 am to 5:00

 pm. The course will be held at Labette Center’s

main facility located at 1730 Belmont Parsons KS

in the multi-purpose room. Participants must reg-

ister prior to the course. Materials, lunch, snacksand a light breakfast are provided. Cost may vary

depending on availablity of grant funding.

This program covers information about how to help

n adult who may be expierencing a mental health crisis or at the onset

of a mental illness. The program is excellent for anyone, regardless of

heir knowledge of mental illness. Through this course individuals will

earn skills and information to help a adult in need.

Navigator’s Creates Successes with Youth

Labette Center’s children’s psychosocial department, called Navigator’s, focuses on helpingyouth with sever emotional disturbance (SED) learn skills and offers support in maintaining theleast restrictive environment for children experiencing emotional or psychiatric issues. Withsupport and assistance to families and school personnel, Community Based Services is de-signed to help children do their best in schools, in the community, and in their home.

The program recently nished up a Spring Break week that was packed full of fun and rewarding activities to the children develop skills to help them through all aspects of their lives. As the end of school approaches program is beginning to prepare for the summer session! The program will be hold groups for youth ranging kindergarten age to high school. They have already begun planning weekly themes and activities to providchildren with an amazing summer expierence!

Throughout the past year, the program has seen many successes as youth who may have previously struggled daily routines and school gained necessary skills to maintain throughout their day. “I’m so proud of all the stathis program.” stated Nikkii Rosenstiel, youth psychosocial coordinator. “They work hard to provide great serto all of the youth in our program. Their passion to help children really shows!” The staff in the Navigator’sgram is looking forward to another successful season!
