PROVICENCE OF ST. BARBARA 1915-2015

Centennial Celebra on

99 years ago, on November 7, 1915, in a li le room at Franciscan headquarters in Rome, a group of friars were seated around a wooden table. They were preparing a document that would change the world. It would be mailed the next day to a li le town called Santa Barbara, California, in the United States of America, where the friars to receive it were at that moment fast asleep on cots in a building next to the Mission church. And a well-deserved rest it was. The friars on those cots were German and years before had made the long journey west from St. Louis, Missouri in order to preach the gospel among German-speaking immigrants up and down Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington. As they fell asleep they might have pictured it: the Pacific Ocean such a long way from the banks of the Mississippi, which in turn was a long way from the banks of the Elbe River in Saxony, Germany, where many of them had be-gun. And, Saxony was a long way from Assisi, Italy, where the whole Franciscan enterprise had begun… Arriving from St. Louis, the Germans faced the scars of history. Their Spanish brothers had been expelled to Mexico a er that country’s bi er war with the U.S. But the Germans brought new energy to new opportuni es. For decades they had thrown themselves into the work and now stood at a crucial juncture. A er prayer and delibera on, it was me to establish their independence from their brothers in faraway St. Louis. They had submi ed their request and when response arrived from Rome their hearts must have soared. With a courageous virgin and martyr as their patroness, they were officially the newest branch of the Franciscan fami-ly tree: the Province of St. Barbara. Over the course of nine decades, that approval did in-deed change the world through the service of friars who up to today follow in the footsteps of Francis as pastors, musicians, nurses, gardeners, teachers, and missionaries. With Spanish and German roots, the Province of St. Bar-bara is now Mexican, Salvadoran, Chinese, Vietnamese, na ve-born U.S., Indonesian, and more. In daily prayer and guided by their elected leadership, friars of the St. Barbara Province open themselves to the Spirit’s next bold summons. Next year the Province of St. Barbara will be 100 years old. Today, on this second Sunday of Advent, we ask you to join the friars in celebra ng the opening of their cen-tennial year. You are part of the centennial story. Through your par cipa on in this community and in your

support of the local friars who serve here, you have been contribu ng very generously to the Province of St. Barba-ra maybe without knowing it. The friars thank you. Over the next twelve months you will be hearing more of the Franciscan story, along with our hopes and dreams for the future. The Pacific coast is s ll a long way from the Mississippi, but technology has connected us in ways the Germans could not have imagined. There are new challenges, new opportuni es, and new fears to over-come. We bring it all, 99 years and more to the Eucha-rist, in the joy and wonder of Advent.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES IMMIGRATION CHANGES AND WARNING

On November 20, the President announced a new pro-gram that will benefit over 4 million undocumented peo-ple na onwide and approximately 150,000 in San Diego and Imperial Coun es. Catholic Chari es, in partnership with the San Diego Organizing Project (SDOP), has worked for many years to enhance the life of immigrant families in our communi es. On that day, we won a big victory! The two biggest changes are providing protec on from deporta on and a work permit for undocumented par-ents with a son or daughter who is a US Ci zen or Legal Permanent Resident and the expansion of who is eligible for the same benefits under the program known as “Deferred Ac on for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA). People will not be able to apply for several months, so it is very important that you do NOT give money to any-one who says he or she can help you now. In the coming weeks, Catholic Chari es and SDOP will be holding free informa on sessions to help you understand this new opportunity, and next year when the government is pre-pared to accept applica ons, we will be available to help those eligible to apply for this program with competent, low-cost services.

SCHOOL NOTES….

Hopefully everyone thoroughly enjoyed spending Thanksgiv-ing with their family and friends, and con nue to remember to offer prayers of gra tude to the Lord for our many blessings! We have now officially crossed the threshold into the Holiday season, tradi onally a very busy me of the year. This past Sunday marked the beginning of Advent, a me of prepara on and an cipa on. As we once again enter this special season of the year let us remember to pause, reflect, recognize and note the many blessings that o en may be taken for granted, but encircle our life. At mes we can become too intent on what we do not have and we o en fail to recognize all that we do have. Together let us take that pause and reflect on those treasures within our midst. Our parish, parishioners, ministries and pastoral support are OMMS’ treasures, treasures we rec-ognize and appreciate. THANK YOU for the shared blessing of being the parish school! REMEMBER to mark your calendars to help us celebrate the season by joining us on Sunday, December 14; come have BREAKFAST with our special guest….SANTA! Begin to unwrap the season by joining our 6th graders on Monday, December 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Francis Hall to revisit Christmas Past, Present and Future as they pull back the curtains for their per-formance of “A Christmas Carol!” Both events will add warmth to this remarkable season. We hope you are able to schedule some me to join us for these upcoming school events. Peace and blessings, Mrs. Wanda S. King, OMMS Faculty and staff
