Beloved American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens brings his extraordinary brand of indie folk-pop to Adelaide for the first time.
Renowned for sophisticated musicianship, achingly poignant vocals and epic themes, he mixes autobiography, spiritual fantasy, and regional history to create folk songs of grand proportions.
In his latest releases The Age of Adz and All Delighted People, banjos and acoustic guitars give way to drum machines and analogue synthesizers to create an explicit pop-song extravaganza, augmented by rich orchestration. Suffused with lush visual accompaniment, these songs will be performed in multi-layered instrumental glory by Sufjan’s full band including woodwind, brass and choir.

In a small house overlooking the bay of Nagasaki lives beautiful Madame Butterfly. It’s 1904, and the American Lieutenant Pinkerton has fallen under the spell of her innocence and charm...
For Butterfly, it’s love, but despite all of Pinkerton’s passion and promises, his heart already belongs to another. When the full scale of his betrayal is revealed, there can be no happily-ever-after. The story first appeared as an opera at the turn of last century and in 1995 was sumptuously recast as a ballet by Australian choreographer Stanton Welch (The Sleeping Beauty, Divergence). This powerful work, unforgettably danced, features some of the most beautiful sets and costumes ever created for The Australian Ballet, from luxurious brocades to dresses as delicate as butterfly wings. Fusing the grandeur of opera with the artistry of ballet, Madame Butterfly is the ultimate tale of East meets West.

“Nancye Hayes, as always, is brilliant” Broadway Australia
preSenTed By AdelAide FeSTivAl CenTre And ChriSTine dunSTAn prOduCTiOnS
Two icons of Australian theatre, Nancye hayes and Reg Livermore take to the stage in the world premiere tour of Turns - a reflection on identity, family, show business... and completely losing your marbles! Pantomime star Marjory Joy is on her last legs (or is she?) As she reflects on a life spent in show business (or was it?) her son Alistair tries to understand this woman, all women - and to come to terms with one woman in particular...
Turns was especially created for these two stars, from the pen - and vivid imagination - of Reg Livermore himself.
Let these two legends take you on a theatrical journey which will surprise and delight you, as Nancye and Reg do what they do best. There’s singing, dancing, comedy, mystery... and much, much, more.
Turns brings together a kaleidoscope of theatrical styles to create a richly entertaining, whimsical, very funny and ultimately moving theatrical event.

Exploring exciting musical territory, Peña’s new production reveals amazing musical links between Latin, Africa and Spain. Thomas is nine and he’s started writing a book. his father says all important books are about God. Even so, Thomas writes down all the interesting things he sees that other people seem to ignore: tropical fish in the canal, a deluge of frogs, the Son of God popping in for a chat …
he also writes down his greatest determination: When I grow up, I’m going to be happy.
Featuring Jesus, the angels, the Bottombiter, the startling Mrs van Amersfoort and a beautiful girl with a leather leg, this is a totally magical story about a child learning to act when faced with fear and wrong. In 1958, one of the most controversial scientists of the 20th century, harry harlow, did what had never been done before... he used the word ‘LOVE’ in a scientific paper. But Love has a darker side. In this Green Room Award winning show, you are invited into the laboratory of harry’s mind, a place where this extraordinary life and work unravel to illuminate one of the most profoundly influential, but publicly vilified pioneers in scientific history.

Featuring the filmic qualities of Toru Takemitsu’s music as a backdrop two global choreographers promise to transport you into dreamlike landscapes and atmospheres of stark contrasts.
Jirí Kylián’s refined and much celebrated choreography is clearly visible in Dreamtime, his chamber work of exquisitely crafted movement for five dancers. This contrasts with the dark and tempestuous piano works in Leigh Warren’s Escape that hurl the performer and audience into action-packed movement and intense stillness. This new work with guest artist Kaiji Moriyama from Japan was inspired by the choreographers’ visit to Akiyoshido, an ancient cave.

Urban Myth Theatre of youth
Celebrating their 30th Anniversary Adelaide’s premier youth theatre company, Urban Myth Theatre of youth, have created a theatrical thriller combining the tales of the past and present to reveal an unexpected truth.
A play with music, The Girl Who Was a hundred Girls is the story of eight women from differing times and place, borne from one woman. Each has a task that seems too great for an individual – liberation, victory, to conquer, to love. But each has hope.
Written by award winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer (Man Covets Bird, The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy and ex Urban Myth member) The Girl Who Was a hundred Girls marks his 50th commissioned play.
Laced with music composed by ex The Whitlams guitarist and acclaimed composer Ben Fink and featuring the energy of Adelaide’s finest young performers, The Girl Who Was a hundred Girls will transport you to a familiar magic world defying time and place.

Annette wakes with the birds on Thursday morning. Despite her recent habit of watching the sun warm the inside of her wearied curtains, she hops out of bed and pads across the rug to her dresser, to double check the ticket. Annette smiles.
Three weeks ago she received a letter from the Adelaide Festival Centre about the upcoming Morning Melodies show. Even though the last show was only a month ago, it’s seemed like more. Annette chuckles in anticipation for what may lie ahead; she remembers catching a certain gentleman’s dreamy gaze across the interval-full foyer and couldn’t help but wonder if he knew what he was looking at. Annette recalls his firm figure, his wisdom-filled eyes and how he smiled charmingly before shaking himself out of it, nearly spilling his tea. She wonders how he likes it.
Annette spends her morning watering the plants, gazing out the window in happy day-dream and then re-watering the plants.
Before the show, she meets with her friend Jude at the foyer cafe for a coffee and a melting moment. Annette hasn’t seen Jude since that day in the foyer and they have much to catch up on. Jude, who possesses an ample amount of chutzpah for them both, is telling an animated story about her second-daughter’s young son and an unfortunate banana, but stops short when she notices Annette’s stare fall on a man collecting tickets at the box office. Jude giggles at Annette’s quickened breathing. “Bet you wouldn’t mind giving him a melting moment of his own, eh Netty?!” she giggles.
Annette can’t wait til interval.

As parents, educators and anyone who impacts on the life of a child, it is our responsibility to ensure the effective development of a child’s mind and their capacities for effective expression. The global economy is in transition from an industrial to a creative Economy: an economy in which an individual’s ideas, rather than product and property, posses the most value. with online and technological advancements comes new modes of business, communication and self-actualization; elements such as social networking and internet-based companies open the doors for new products, inventions and expression; the human mind is now engaged with and excited about change and creativity.in order to give our children the best shot at life, we need to encourage them to do things a little differently. we need to encourage their world-acquaintance, humility, wisdom and creativity.
Our futuredepends on it.
Adelaide Festival centre’s centrEd and greenroom programs have been tailored to foster these responsibilities by providing a platform for children and young people to kick major goals in our new world. These programs also give teachers, parents and caregivers the opportunity to share the joy and excitement of the arts with children on a peer-to-peer level.
Creativityin the classroom
and beyondAn initiative of the department of Education and children Services (dEcS), centrEd has been a key player in offering 5-18 year olds interactive, performative tours, workshops, performances and professional learning opportunities either at no or extremely low cost. For many students it’s their first introduction to a live performing arts venue. After a series of mentoring sessions and a consequent Adelaide cabaret Festival performance, a year 10 student said “(it was) ...an amazing opportunity to showcase amazing talents with an amazing mentor! Thanks to the Festival centre for their inspiration and for offering this stunning and never forgettable experience!” Speak to your child’s teacher about creative opportunities for your child through Adelaide Festival centre’s centrEd. Adelaide Festival centre’s greenroom membership program offers 16-30 year-olds access to shows presented by Adelaide Festival centre, with heavily discounted tickets, workshops and masterclasses plus mentoring opportunities with leading arts industry professionals. Through this program, members positively engage with the arts on a deeper level.

When the weather starts to turn in May it’s time to pack up the kids and head in to the Adelaide Festival Centre for Something On Saturday. here you can ignite your children’s creativity and introduce them to the magic of theatre and the arts.Something on Saturday runs through May to August and offers your children (ages 3-10 years) a fun and entertaining way to learn about different cultures, languages, lifestyles, artforms, sciences, environments, social skills and much more.Something On Saturday began life in 1977 as an ‘alternative to football’ with a live show and free kid’s corner each week. It has now grown to become an iconic family program in South Australia, touching the lives of both children and parents.“Many years ago we took our own two children and now as grandparents we have great fun taking our granddaughter,” explains Something On Saturday regulars Cynthia and Graham Dunton. Now in its 34th year, and supported by National Pharmacies for 12 years in 2011, the Something On Saturday program covers everything including storytelling, magic, ballet, acrobatics, circus, puppetry, craft, contemporary and classical music, all with contagious energy and excitement.Adelaide Festival Centre’s Artistic Director Douglas Gautier is proud to continue the Something On Saturday program into the future: “We believe that Something on Saturday has touched the lives of at least 500,000 South Australians.”

School holidays are also covered with a diverse program of family events including the Children’s Cheering Carpet – Saltbush in April (see page 10), little Big Shots international Film Festival for Kids in July and The Gruffalo’s Child in October (see page 24).Back for its fifth consecutive year little Big Shots international Film Festival for Kids, is a festival for kids and about kids from ages 2-15 years.Australia’s only major stand-alone kids’ film festival, little Big Shots features the best in local and international children’s shorts, animations, documentaries and, amazingly, child-produced films. This year it will be in the Space Theatre from 21 til 23 July. There is a new program each year and Festival Director Chloe Boulton attentively sources films that will inspire discussion of world cultures, different languages, cultural diversity, emotional intelligence and human values.“Several of the films made by kids reflect on their own experiences or those close to them with some made by kids as young as eight years old,” explains Chloe.Regular little Big Shots attendee, zoe holloway, describes her daughter’s favourite films in the 2010 program: “We are still talking about zokky the
Kangaroo in our house today. We have also bought the book version of Don’t let a Pigeon Drive a Bus… It was a great collection of films and the kids have taken a lot away from the day and long they will remember it for.”And make sure you bring the family to Come Out’s Big Family Outing on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 March in and around the Adelaide Festival Centre (see pages 6 and 7).
