On 8th November 2013 super-typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippine provinces of Leyte and Samar. The scale of the disaster and the enormous logistical difficulties in accessing the hardest hit areas were a big challenge for our organization. within hours, our teams in the Philippines and Spain were set in motion to alleviate the suffering of those affected. Our intervention, crucial for 200,000 people, has positioned us as one of the benchmark humanitarian actors in this type of crisis.
Elsewhere in the world, we have been able to help, in a single year, over 9 million men, women and children. Of these, over three million have been beneficiaries of projects coordinated from ACF-Spain. The focus on community management of malnutrition, one of the great pillars of our strategy, has allowed us to exponentially increase the number of children cured of malnutrition, while keeping the projects’ costs down. This working methodology, together with the integrated approach for fighting against malnutrition (combining nutrition interventions with water, sanitation and hygiene, livelihood and disaster prevention projects) is enabling significant advances in our roadmap to eradicating child malnutrition.
The Social Action work in Spain has also produced significant results this year: we have been able to implement social and work inclusion projects for people at risk of exclusion. Despite being an emerging area of work, in only one year 85 people have launched ventures after receiving advice from employment advisers trained by Action Against Hunger. It’s just the beginning: soon we will begin working directly with beneficiaries through employment launches.
All these achievements have been possible thanks to the trust of the citizens, businesses and institutions that support us. we want to be accountable to all of you in this annual report explaining how we have used the resources provided. There is no greater satisfaction for our organization than to be able to show, with full transparency, what your help has been transformed into and how it has improved the lives of millions of people.

Summary of the 2013 annual reportACCIÓN CONTRA EL HAMBRE 7hunger haS a Solution
www.ACCIONCONTRAELHAMBRE.ORg6
Our organization has experienced a sharp increase in all its areas of work in 2013 and, especially, in the number of people we have been able to assist. For the first time we have assisted over three million people.
2013 has been a very busy year, marked by international emergencies and by our outstanding actions in the crises in
the Sahel, Syria and the Philippines. Action Against Hunger has also been very active in Spain, looking to strengthen its presence and impact on social action programmes for young people at risk of social exclusion.
Each of these emergencies has been very singular, which shows the overall capacity of our organization as well as its versatility when it comes to addressing different complex working contexts simultaneously.
Sahel, the epiCentre of hungerThe situation in the Sahel is characterised by its recurrence and its structural nature. with desertification and population explosion, the countries in the Sahel region live in a state of permanent crisis where the ratio of covering basic food needs deteriorates year after year. This situation contributes to further destabilising fragile countries with deep political and social divisions.
Despite the (relative) peace and better prospects in the 2014 agricultural season, the Sahel is still the world’s most vulnerable area in terms of food security with over 10 million people at permanent risk and a gradual deterioration of economic conditions for the most vulnerable.
Syrian CriSiS, 3 yearS of flightThe Syrian crisis is a political crisis par excellence that is having serious repercussions at the regional level. The flow of refugees into Lebanon and Kurdistan remains very high and it is calculated that over nine million people need urgent help within the borders. The Syrian tragedy is reminiscent of the Cold war, when the international community was blocked by the conflicting interests of the United Nations Security Council members. Beyond the crisis being suffered, Syria is being transformed into the open wound of a new world order.
anD yolanDa ravageD the philippineSThe third crisis is a pure climate crisis. Thanks to its government immediately recognising the catastrophic situation, the Philippines has been able to channel major
international aid although, by definition, it was insufficient during the early days. The actions of its government have allowed, without a doubt, the number of fatalities to be mitigated. Even so, the destruction caused by typhoon “Yolanda” has been very serious and has left over 14 million victims.
International mobilisation has been important as is usual with natural disasters, but less generosity from institutional donors was noted. The typhoon left thousands dead and millions of victims in various parts of the archipelago. Based on lessons learned from similar disasters, we worked to apportion and plan our support so that, beyond the first emergency phase, the rehabilitation and revival of the economy phase is also covered in the coming years.
Spain, firSt StepSBeyond these high-profile crises, we have been able to develop new, more discreet, but no less ambitious projects on all continents and in Spain, where 2013 was the year for launching new direct activities with groups affected by the crisis. Our beneficiaries in Spain are not in the millions because the type of activity is very different from the support we provide to victims in the Third world. However, they numbered five hundred, which we feel is an achievement at this time and in this first year.
Today, thanks to the loyalty and generosity of all the people and institutions that have supported us in 2013, we have over two hundred active projects where the men and women who make up our organization build on a daily basis with dedication, professionalism and talent. In these times, so difficult for many families in Spain, but that aren’t affecting their generosity for those who have less, we want to keep on improving to end hunger, which one in eight people in the world suffers from. Because nothing can change our conviction that a world without hunger is truly possible, we want you to continue with us on this journey.
