    Who is Louis XIV

    --In 1643 he became the King France.--He became King of France at the age of 5.--His mother and his father Chief Minister ruled France untilLouis could handle the job.

    --At age 23 he stopped ruling with a chief minister and ruledby himself.--Later in life he was known as the Sun King.--He died on September first 1715 and his grandson tookcontrol

    Religion

    From the 1560's to the 1590's religious wars between thecatholic majority and the French protestants calledHuguenots, tore France apart.

    Louise was Catholic This lead Louis XIV to belive the French Protestant

    Minority to would destroy France In 1685 he revoked the edict of Nantes. More than

    100,000 Huguenots fled Frances, settling mainly in

    England, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and theAmericas.

    Economy & Trade

    In 1661 Louis XIV took control over the economy due to itbeing weak and very fragile.

    To help the economy Louis XIV launched a series ofmilitary crusades and the construction of Versailles (hiscourt)

    During Economic affairs he relied on Jean BaptisteColbert for help during his span.

    Mainly the poor peasants were taxed. Nobles were nottaxed. Much of the money collected ended up insomeones pocket rather than the government.

    He encouraged trade to stimulate the economy. Louis brilliant financial minister Jean Baptiste Colbert,

    imposed mentalist policies to bolster the economy

    They helped in founding a colony called New France.(Located in Present North America)

    Basically the state controlled much of the trade

    Louis was the french protestantminority as a threat to religious andpolitical unity. In 1685 he revokedthe edict of nantes.

    More than 100,000 Huguenots fled Frances, settlingmainly in England, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland,and the Americas. This was a serious down side to theFrench economy.

    External (foreign) Problems

    Louis XIV enjoyed wars that expand french boarders. The balance of power was an event in Europe designed

    to distribute economic and military power through outEurope.

    In 1700 Louise grandson Philip V inherited the thrown ofSpain, the rest of Europe did not want the two country's tounite and become the power house. The war of Spanishsuccession went on until 1713 when Spain and France

    agreed to never become a join power house.

    Cultural & Technical Advantages

    "I am the state" was big idea of him, he was what peoplethought of France.

    Believed in divine right and took the sun as his individualpower.

    He supported the arts The era was known as the classical age of French Drama Louis sponsored the french academies (they set high

    standards for both of the arts and science)
