The guest speaker willbe Lynn Bonfield ofPeacham and San Fran-cisco. Her topic will be “Ver-mont Women’s 19th CenturyDiaries – Windows to dailylife and Hidden Secrets.”The writers lived in Barnet

and Peacham. She invitesanyone having diaries or let-ters from the 19th century tobring them to the meeting.

Lynn is a senior archivistat the University of San Francisco. She spendsher summers at her secondhome in Peacham. She is a published author andregular contributor to the“North Star” of Danville, and“Vermont History”, publishedby the Vermont HistoricalSociety.

BURLINGTON, VT – MelanieC. Lawrence, M.D., a 2000graduate of the University ofVermont (UVM) College ofMedicine, received the UVMMedical Alumni Association’sEarly Achievement AlumniAward at a reunion awardsceremony held in June. TheEarly Achievement AlumniAward is presented to analumnus who has graduated

within the past 15 years inrecognition of his/her out-standing community or Col-lege service, scientific, oracademic achievement.

Dr. Lawrence is a familyphysician in Newbury, Ver-mont. She serves as themedical director of the Dart-mouth Research Co-op,where she works with ruralprimary care physicians toimprove patient care. Shewas a co-founder of LittleRivers Health Care, a Feder-ally Qualified Health Center,which was started to bettermeet the needs of the med-ically underserved in her ruralOrange County community.The Health Center is a com-munity based, non-profitgroup of practices that pro-vides primary and preventivehealth care to patients

regardless of their ability to pay.Beginning in 2000, Dr.

Lawrence has made annualmedical service trips to loca-tions such as Kosovo, Hon-duras, and Burkina Faso. In2005, in addition to co-found-ing The Mentoring Project ofthe Upper Valley, she beganserving on the CommunityBoard of Valley Vista Sub-stance Abuse TreatmentCenter. She established theToothy Tiger initiative, a localdental-health program inwhich fourth grade studentsact as dental coaches tokindergarteners, in 2009.

In June of 2010, Dr.Lawrence opened her ownrural health practice basedon the “Idealized MedicalPractice” model seeking tomeet community and patientneeds in her own town.

Life in the woods haschanged for me quite a bit inthe last year now that Jewel,my aging four legged walkingpartner, has pretty much re-tired from long walks. At theage of 13 ½, the old girl ispretty content to take short,methodical walks, sleep in herbed and chase rabbits in hersleep. However age has notdulled her sense of adventure

and our latest walks in thewoods have been via canoe,where her distance traveled isunlimited as she gets paddledaround local ponds.

Tonight my canoe paddledips into the wind swept wa-ters of Long Pond, a beautifulforest pond rimed with bal-sam fir and spruce whichcling to a craggy shoreline ofrock and swamp. As the sun

sets, the wind calms downand the air is colored with adull orange glow highlightedwith a rim of green aroundthe lake. Ripples in the waterglint with the waning sun andsparkle silvery orange in theblack empty water. Jewelsits with her nose pointing inthe air, smelling smells andsmiling inside. She is as con-tent as an old dog can be.

I close my eyes and inhale,trying to imagine what shesmells in the air that I cannot.In comparison to her nose,mine is pretty much a humandecoration with little use. In-stead I quietly imagine a timewhen the canoe under me wasan essential tool of survival.

At one time in our historythe canoe was a majorsource of transportation. Na-tive Americans of the north-east had canoe routes thatfollowed water courses andportages from NorthernMaine across New Hamp-shire and Vermont to NewYork State and into Canada.These canoe routes servedNative Americans as trans-portation and trade routes.

Early settlers and trap-pers adopted these canoeroutes and used them fortrapping and trading furs ofbeaver, mink, otter andmuskrat. Trapping settlementswere built on these canoeroutes, and these settlementseventually became villagesand then towns. Little by littleearly European trapperscarved a life out of the wilder-ness and eventually built thiscountry. Much of this coun-try’s history would have beenquite different were it not for asimple wooden device knownas the canoe.

When walking in thewoods, the noisy sound ofmy feet frightens wildlife andlimits my viewing opportuni-ties. In a canoe it is much dif-ferent; it isn’t hard to becomea silent, graceful intruder andviewing wildlife becomesmuch more intimate and in-teresting. From a canoe on aforested pond, wildlife watch-ing opportunities are unlim-ited, and my wife and I have

had many close encountersincluding watching deerswim and moose feed lazilyin deep water. This evening’sshow does not let us down.Loons, ducks, kingfisher, anddozens of other species ofboreal forest and wetlandbirds treat us to the concertof the wilderness.

The highlight of theevening was watching abeaver feed methodically ona 20 foot mountain ashsapling. We watched in silence from a short distanceas the chubby rodent used all his body weight to drag the sapling from thewoods into the water wherehe proceeded to devourevery leaf and branch. Afterhis meal he slipped silentlyunder the black water anddisappeared.

We paddled in watery si-lence through the last of thedaylight and arrived back atshore in the dark. Jewel, ourcaptain, slept soundly thisevening, and so did I.

Her whole family alwayscooked, she tells a visitor, andshe also studied culinary artsand restaurant managementthere. The beer is ice cold,(freezer-frosted glasses) andthe servers are pretty andhelpful young ladies. Man andwife restaurant partnersCamilla and Scott(andCamilla’s brother Mano upfrom Brazil) have created theVery Good Little Grill - it is al-ready one of the best foodstops in the upper river valleyregion - 2707 Dartmouth Col-lege Hiway, (603 787-9818)sharing the same parking lotas Fadden’s Automotive.

All kinds of “cervesa” inbottle and on tap, includingSammy Adams, await you atthe 8-stool bar just inside theentrance and adjoining thegenerous waiting area - it is a

full service bar, but a compactone, featuring friendly folksand a large flat screen forsports or news viewing.

Scott and Camilla openedthe restaurant at it’s current lo-cation early this year. Scotthas extensive restaurant ex-perience - he’s worked askitchen manager and generalmanager at such well-knownregional hot spots as theWoodstock Brewery and Inn,the Weathervane in West Leb,and Margarita’s. Camilla’shome culture explains a lotabout her approach to foodpreparation with pallettepleasing spices - not strictlyBrazilian, nor just Mexican.

It’s hard to overestimatethe importance of properlyprepared black beans andrice, and of freshly madehouse salsa, red sauce(“salsa roja”). Those items area must in any place offeringsouth-of-the- border eats, andthey are hallmarks of anyplace that does the job well.The Little Grille does.

Here’s why the salsa isexceptional. Tomatoes, cherrypeppers, onion, the spicecumin, garlic, and chile pow-der. Of course made on prem-ises. It’s so hot sometimesthey warn you and bring you asmall taste of the fresh stuff soyou can judge for yourself.

Here’s why the blackbeans and rice are superb.The rice is cooked withsauteed garlic, no butter, butextra virgin olive oil. The un-cooked black beans arecooked with sauteed onions,with bacon and the spice mar-joram is added.

Serving days and hours -Mon-Thurs, 11am -10pm; Fri-days and Saturdays, it staysopen a couple hours longer,and Saturdays and Sundaymornings come in for heartytraditional breakfasts between730am and 1130 am. Sundaynight open till 9pm.

An important part of theLittle Grille story has to do withvery big nights, three of themthrough the week, each one an“all-you-can-eat”. Those spe-cial offering nights alreadyhave won a popular following .Wednesdays features a widevariety of Italian dishes,brought to your table. Rotatingmenus throughout the monthensure fresh choices and vari-ety. One recent menu line-upincluded Shrimp Alfredo, PestoFettuccini, Veggie Alfredo, andCarbonara - bacon, garlic but-ter, chopped onions and oliveoil pan sauteed, then the pastais added with a mixture ofwhipped heavy cream andeggs. Or make your visit Thurs-day night if you like seafoodfresh- fried, broiled or sauteed.And Saturday night, lots of re-turning customers have dis-covered Grilled and SmokedMeats night - all you can eat,many different cuts from beef,pork and chicken, grilled, orsmoked, and all brought toyour table - including a specialoffering of Brazilian stylesausages as appetizers. Ohyeah again. Recently, an invit-ing outdoor patio to one side ofthe main building was built andlandscaped by Mano, festivewith table umbrellas, and custom-crafted railroad tiescreating bright flower bed bor-ders. Another hallmark of acool place is to be able to eatdelicious food outside andwatch the world move along infront of you. Sounds like a destination with cooler weatherapproaching.

In closing, let me just say -Nachos, Wings, Skins, South-western Salad, Camilla’s Fa-mous Brazilian Burger, Scottie’sBig Mouth Burger, Mano’s Tus-can Sandwich and last andnever least, The Cubano.

Haveyour Afterschool program, 4-HClub, Girl Scout troop, BoyScout or Cub Scout troop,Homeschool group or classparticipate on Wednesday,October 6.

This is the third annual 4-H National Youth Science Day,where youth across the nationexamine one of the most im-portant issues facing our na-tion today water quality. Theseyoung scientists will discoverand explore the powerful ef-fects of carbon dioxide on ournatural water sources in 4-H2O, the 2010 National Sci-ence Experiment.

Developed in conjunctionwith North Carolina Coopera-tive Extension and North Car-olina A&T State University, theexperiment is designed tospark an early youth interest inscience all part of 4-H's boldgoal to engage a million newyoung people in science, en-gineering, technology and ap-plied math programs by 2013.

Water quality is a termused to describe the chemical,physical, and biological char-acteristics of water. Today, asour population evolves, weface a growing concern thatour sources of clean water arebecoming contaminated bywarming temperatures, car-bon dioxide emissions anddangerous run off. Thesechanges in the water qualityaffect not only our drinkingwater supply, but also the nat-ural habitats of aquatic plants,animals and organisms.

This year’s National Sci-ence Experiment – 4-H20 – isdesigned to engage youtharound the country in askingthe question: Why is waterquality important and why is itimportant to understand itnow?

According to informationreleased by National 4-HCouncil, the experiment willhelp youth take the activities inthe experiment and connectback to their lives by measur-ing their own carbon footprint,their family’s footprint, and es-timate energy savings by look-ing at gas and electric bills. By

the end of the activity, studentswill learn through experimen-tation, the effect of CO2 levelson water quality, calculate theamount of CO2 a family con-tributes to the atmosphere tobetter understand the humanimpact of the carbon footprint,understand the key character-istics used to observe waterquality, such as color, odor,and the presence of aquaticplants and animals, under-stand the impacts of CO2 andnutrient runoff on the over-growth of algae in lakes, lead-ing to changes in water qualityand engage in a discussionabout water quality and globalclimate change.

I got an interesting phonecall the other day aboutgreen potatoes. Of coursewe all know potatoes are notmeant to be green and mostof us have made the mistakeof eating one that was. If not,I don’t recommend it be-cause they taste incrediblybitter and they contain an al-kaloid that would be poison-ous in large doses. But whatcauses it? Sunlight is themost common cause, but didyou know that artificial lightcan create the same prob-lem?

This piece of informationsolved the mystery for thecaller and from there the dis-cussion of green potatoesquickly turned to more gen-eral potato harvest issues. Itturns out, like many othercrops from hay to raspber-ries, potatoes are early thisyear. According to severallocal growers, the earliest va-rieties are mature alreadyand yields have been good.If this continues, those of youwho have recently taken upgardening may be thinkingabout storing your own pota-toes for the first time.

The same way oniontops conveniently flop over totell you when the bulbs aremature, potato vines will diewhen the tubers are mature.If your potatoes are late and you want to hurry themalong just cut the vines. At this point you can goahead and harvest some toeat right away, but the onesyou intend to store you want to leave in the groundfor another two weeks. Thiswill allow their skins to“toughen up”.

Next, you want to digthem up and sort them, re-membering to keep them inthe shade as much as possi-ble. If you can, choose acool day for digging the pota-toes. The ideal temperaturesfor harvest are between 45ºand 60º F. Any bruised ordamaged tubers should beset aside to either compostor eat right away. The restyou will want to “cure” in acool (50-60º F) shady spotfor 10-14 days. 95% relativehumidity (ie humid) is idealfor curing potatoes, which iswhy they tend to do so well inunheated basements. Un-heated basements alsomake a good site for longterm storage. Ideal condi-tions are damp, humid and37-40º F.

My caller and I ended ourdiscussion with the question“to wash or not wash” the po-tatoes prior to putting them instorage. I did not find a lot ofconsensus on this topic, butaccording to the Idaho Po-tato Commission, excessivedampness can lead to rot.Also washing may lead tobruising, therefore, and par-ticularly for potatoes fromyour own garden, I wouldrecommend against washingbefore storing. After all youare going to wash them be-fore you cook them anyway,so why do it twice?

As a final note on thegreen potatoes, you can cutout the green parts and eatthe rest, but I recommendyou cut a little beyond thegreen zone, just to makesure. For more informationon growing potatoes, pleasevisit http://extension.unh.edu/resources/representation/Resource000606_Rep628.pdf .

The daughters and son ofAlbert K. Read III wanted topay tribute to a man who hadraised them, helped with their4-H projects and given a life-time of memories and wis-dom to hand down to themand their families. It was timeto honor him. What wouldthis mean for a man wholived his life tilling the earthand giving to others?

Training steers and watch-ing young people learn to re-spect and bond with theiranimals was always a great joyto this farmer, this husband,this father…this 4-H leader.

For many years, Albert K.Read III was a 4-H leader inSullivan County, affecting thelives of the youth who partici-pated in his 4-H Club. He diddairy project work and helpedwith many other aspects of theclub program. He and his wifewere instrumental in startingthe Sullivan County 4-H DairyClub, still operating today.

This year marks the firstAlbert K. Read III MemorialTeamster Award presented atNorth Haverhill Fair. Hisdaughters, Linda Stoddard,Faith Dellarova and JoyceRead, along with their fami-lies, created the award tohonor their father.

“We wanted to do some-thing special to commemo-rate our father and his life.He loved working steers…handy steers.”

The criteria for the awardhonored Mr. Read and hisvalues. The teamster had todemonstrate outstandingshowmanship and respect fortheir team. Being helpful toother 4-H’ers, demonstratingto the public and being ateam player were other im-portant selection criteria. Thefair is part of the public’s ed-ucation about agriculture andthe recipient had to partici-pate in demonstrations andanswer questions throughoutthe fair about their 4-H proj-ect. The 4-H teamsterneeded to go above and be-yond the expectations of allexhibitors at the fair.

This year’s recipient ownsand showed a pair of Devoncattle. Mr. Read had a specialplace in his heart for Devon

steers, his favorite breed. KyleBoutin showed patience be-yond his years with handlinghis team and a determinationto work hard. He was helpfulto other 4-H’ers and to theshow superintendent. In hisdemonstrations, Kyle showeddetermination and a willing-ness to keep trying, despitethe difficulty of the tasks as-signed. All these factors, andhis ability to work as a team,helped set Kyle Boutin ofBradford, Vermont, apart fromthe rest of the 4-H teamstersat North Haverhill Fair. AlbertK. Read III would have beenproud of Kyle’s showmanshipand determination.

The smell of freshly bakedbread and chip cookies filledthe Stoddard Building at NorthHaverhill Fair on Saturday, July31. For the first time in morethan a decade King ArthurFlour and UNH CooperativeExtension worked together tosponsor a youth and adultbaking contest. Prizes weresupplied by King Arthur Flour.

The youth contest, opento those 8 to 17 years old,used King Arthur Flour’s Fa-vorite Chip Cookies recipeand had eight entries. Theadults were given the chal-lenging task of making Ver-mont Oatmeal Maple-HoneyBread. Twelve local bakers en-tered the contest.

Some contestants reportedthat they had tried the recipeseveral times and their neigh-bors reaped the benefits oftheir efforts. The winner of thecontest, Samantha Stoddard ofNorth Haverhill, said she triedthe recipe once, the eveningbefore the contest. Judges forthe adult division were Bernieand Polly Marvin of Piermont.Bernie is known throughout the

region as the baker for Bernie’sBreads. The judges stated thatSamantha’s loaves were wellshaped, had good texture anda wonderful taste.

Sam won a $75 gift certifi-cate to the King Arthur FlourBaker’s Catalogue. In secondplace was Linda Masure ofBradford who woke up earlySaturday morning and deliv-ered her bread hot from theoven. She received a $50 giftcertificate. Third place went toJoyce Read of North Haver-hill, aunt of winner Sam Stod-dard. Joyce won a Baker’sCompanion Cookbook.

Zach Moore of Haverhillwon the cookie contest. Thejudge for that event was ChefNick Lemire of Beal House Innin Littleton. Contestants weregiven a basic cookie recipeand had the option of addingbaking chips of their choice.Zach received a $50 gift certifi-cate. Second place went toEmily French of North Haverhillwho received a Cookie Com-panion Cookbook. Katie Finnof Benton, NH and Duxbury,MA won her very own King

Jerry is a tractor afi-cionado. Anyone with a pas-sion for such things is alwayslooking for them in any con-dition, at any price, and forany part. Jerry is no excep-tion; when a neighbor namedMike told him about a guynearly fifty miles away, Jerrywas in his pickup and on theroad. He was so anxious tobe on his way, he almostmissed the knowing smirk onMike’s face as he gave direc-tions.

“It’s a long dirt road justoutside of town,” Mike hadsaid. Jerry thought he wasgoing to the ends of the earthas the road became nar-rower and bumpier. Just ashe thought he’d better turnaround, he came to a smallclearing containing junk au-tomobiles, tires, live chickensand geese, falling downbuildings, old parts andpieces, tractor skeletons, anda ramshackle house, andJerry knew he was in theright place.

Walking gingerly overweeds and poultry drop-

pings, Jerry knocked at thedoor. He could see some ac-tivity inside the house, andafter a minute the door wasanswered. Jerry asked po-litely if there were any tractorparts for sale, and the dooropened.

This would not be a storyif Jerry had bought some-thing and gone on his way,nor would it be a story ifJerry had bought nothing. Itis only a story because ofwhat happened next.

As the door opened,Jerry saw, to his amazement,a 70-year-old man who wasdressed in a blue blouse, aplaid skirt, stockings (onshaved legs) and black highheels. Tottering around theyard on those spike heels,through weeds and goosemanure, the man made noapologies for his appear-ance, and was most anxiousfor Jerry to see his tractorcollection. Nothing, however,was for sale, and Jerry wassoon on his way, not knowingwhat to think except that hewould have something to say

to Mike when he got home.Jerry soon found that the

man is a legend throughoutthe Northeast Kingdom;there are many people whoknow of him, and they allenjoy trading stories aboutthe man and his interesting,if different, lifestyle.

A few years later, Jerryand a friend attended anauction in the same area,and decided to pay a returnvisit, having heard that theguy had a tractor that was forsale. The road to his housewas a little more narrow andbumpy, weeds were as highas the car. When theyreached the dooryard, how-ever, in interesting spectaclemet their eyes. There, work-ing on an old engine, was theman—this time attired in ayellow sundress, stockings,moccasins and a pork pie

hat. He must have beenworking for quite a while, asthe dress was the worse forwear with large grease stainsall over the bodice and skirt.He told Jerry and his friendthat the tractor had beengiven to his “boy” who wasdown the road “hayin’.” Jerryand his friend followed theman’s directions and cameupon a 50-ish man with ahayrake who also didn’t wantto sell anything either. “Thistractor is the only one I haveleft”, he drawled.

Driving back down thedusty road Jerry and hisfriend speculated on their in-teresting day.

“He should have at leastworn an apron”, Jerrymused.

“And,” said his friend,“that hat definitely didn’t gowith his outfit.”

To the Editor:All of us that live within the Haverhill

Area (Woodsville, No.Haverhill, Pike,Haverhill, Benton, etc...), have all lostsomeone whom we loved, cared about,looked up to or given a part of themselvesin some way or another for this nation.Wheather it was a father, mother, brother,sister, husband or wife that were in theservice for this country, called "The UnitedStates of America". They too have giventheir lives, body parts and time.

Don't get me wrong. I knew Bob Clif-ford, had for a long time. Went to schoolwith his sons, served in the Guards withhim in Woodsville after my active servicewas up. If the Select Board has had theirminds made up from the start and plan to

stand by it, then they have no respect forthe other Veterans (active or non-active)men or women who it should be named for,not just 1 person. If the Select Board mem-bers made up their minds without askingthe towns people what we thought it shouldbe named, then that's disrespectful to thepeople in general. Sounds more and morelike a DICTATORSHIP ruling to me. Maybethose people that we elected should stepdown because they don't seem to have theopinions, thoughts or care of the rest of uswho live here and some have given it all.Like the song goes, Some Gave All. Itdoesn't say One Gave All.

Letter To The Editor

Mike,

You add another voice to those calling for a reconsideration by the Haver-

hill Select Board. You also make a good point with the “Some Gave All” quote.

On the other hand, this will not be the only building in town named for

just one person. We have the Morrill Municipal Building (James Morrill was

the long time principal when it was an elementary school) There is also the

John Bagonzi Community Building in Woodsville (a long time coach who is

still coaching). I’m not sure how everyone else refers to these buildings, but

I most often hear them referred to as “The Municipal Building” and “The

Community Building”.

The Armory in Woodsville may well remain “The Armory” until the time

comes that it has a definate alternate purpose.

So one could say “What’s in a name?” It’s a nice honor, or means of

honoring an individual, but does it diminish the value of all others who

also served?

The bottom line is that this is not an easy question. It is not an easy

decision. It is a decision that the current Haverhill Select Board will need to

live with, or change their minds and reopen the naming process.

In the August 3rd issue ofTrendy Times I wrote on thedownside of tobacco smok-ing, basically because thereis no upside. In effect, you areinhaling everything from cad-mium, used as a phosphatefertilizer and in batteries tonicotine, an extremely addic-tive drug which gets into yoursystem quickly and requirescontinuous replacement.These are 2 of the 4000chemicals found in cigarettes.

Had I known this as afetus, as an embryo, as ababy, an infant, a child, ateen or an adult, it would nothave been my choice tosmoke. However, at the ageof 13, in 1963, I pilfered 5 ofmy mother’s cigarettes andsmoked them, inhaling, oneafter the other. This episoderesulted in nausea and mygetting sick to my stomach.

I have tried to quit 3times since then -- once for 6weeks, once for 88 days andmost recently for ten days. Itis purely rationalization atthis time to start pointing tochemicals and choices formy habit. It is idiocy tosmoke. Thus, if I continue tosmoke, I am indeed an idiot,particularly in the beautifuland healthy environmentwhere I live.

I will say this with humilityabout myself but with theknowledge that I was a de-cent athlete who loved it, adecent singer who loved itand one who has hiked theWhites, The Greens, TheSmokey Mountains, TheRockies and the Sierras, thewhole time smoking.

I know that smoking hada terrible effect on a careerthat I loved, the newspaperbusiness, as soon as I couldno longer smoke on the job.In addition, smoking waspart of the reason the motherof my children and I divorced– she couldn’t stand it andthat has stood true for herand the children to this day.

These problems are allcommon to all smokers inone way or another. It takessupport to quit for most of us– according to DHMC, ittakes up to 10 tries for manypeople to stop.

When Dartmouth Hitch-cock Medical Center madethe decision to have a to-bacco free campus, theylisted 6 primary reasons intheir literature: tobacco nega-tively affects those aroundthem and those who use it;smoke, chew and cigarettebutts are harmful to our envi-ronment; secondhand smokeis a major cause of lung can-cer and heart disease in non-smokers who are exposed; if

you smoke, it takes longer fora wound to heal after surgeryand to recover from injury orillness in general; second-hand smoke triggers wheez-ing and allergic reactions inothers who have allergies,asthma or other lung diseaseand by becoming tobaccofree, DHMC hoped to educatepeople on the health risksconnected with smoking.

DHMC now has a To-bacco Dependence Treat-ment Clinic (603-653-9456).New Hampshire Health andServices has a quit line (1-800-TryToStop) and so doesthe State of VT (1-800-Quit-Now). www.cancer.org is anexcellent website.

According to materials Ihave from the State of VTaround the year 2000, 16%of youngsters betweengrades 8 and 12 smoked atthe time. This is unaccept-able. NH Health and HumanServices has developed aslogan: “Live Tobacco Freeor Die”. It is critical to ask theyoung to stop smoking.There is the issue of choice,but the perspective of one,like me, who has a smokingrelated disease and hassmoked for 46 years countsas much. Life becomes bet-ter as you get older and takeon more responsibility. Manyof those who smoke thinkotherwise according to an or-ganization called: ”ForeverFree: A Guide to RemainingSmoke Free. I read the chap-ter called “Smoking, Stressand Mood” as stress is my“middle name”.

The material pointed outthat “stress is what we havewhen life gives us challenges– good and bad, major andminor.” Stress is defined as

being overwhelmed andtense. “People who have a lotof stress tend to have aharder time quitting.....alsopeople prone to negativemoods, such as sadness andanxiety. Most smokers learnto use cigarettes as a way todeal with stress. Nicotinecauses the brain to releasechemicals called neurotrans-mitters. Some of thesechemicals, such as beta-en-dorphin and norepinephrinecan cause a person to feelbetter for a very short time,needing constant reinforce-ment. They serve as a quickpickup but their effect on thebody leaves quickly, to be re-placed by the next cigarette.They work to, in the veryshort run, distract peoplefrom their troubles.”

When I wrote in the lastissue, it was to be instruc-tional, not to produce guilt,but to, in a short space, real-ize that A Cloud of Smoke isreally Smoke and Mirrors, adeceptive industry that preyson all Americans (I actuallyhave a lust for cigarettes –they are so time consuming,expensive and dangerous.) Ihide behind that lust.

It is so frightening to methat youngsters still smokeand that marijuana is worsefor your lungs. I wish I couldprevent tobacco and drugsfrom reaching the young, butI am not a public health offi-cial. I am an “armchair gen-eral” who can't wish enoughthat anyone in today's soci-ety does not have to gothrough the heartbreak Ihave because of smoking,first and second hand. I didn'teven believe in second handsmoke until 2004. Let me justsay that we are not immortal

and that it is not our right tolet the enemy, tobacco, in theform of the nastiest of habits,become an ungodly interfer-ence with the gift of life wehave been given.

For me, smoking hasbeen constant. These arti-cles are helpful to me indealing with past losses andthe horror of them and thepredicament I am in now. Ifind smoking is a major dis-traction in my life which holdsme back in so many ways.For those who care about

me, I hope you help me overthe top of this mountain as Iwill you. The bottom line iswe are not “back in the day”where anyone could smokeanywhere and did. The bot-tom line today is yo keep theyoung away from these nastydrugs and chemicals whichplay with their growth, body,emotions and mind – smok-ers cannot be role models.

If these articles cause orhelp even one person tostop, I will be pleased. Itwould be a blessing.

It’s Time To Think About Politics/Politicians

Primary day is now justfour weeks away (Tuesday,September 14, 2010). Likemany years there is a lotbeing said. Candidates arevisiting as many people aspossible in as many placesas possible. I have met andtalked with state wide candi-dates at the fair, at a lunch-eon, and at a forum. I expectto see some of the sameagain, and possibly someothers before the big day.Though I am a New Hamp-shire resident and thereforesee mostly candidates fromthis side of the river, I amsure that the Green Moun-tain State residents havealso seen plenty of the voteseekers.

When you take a mo-ment to think about it, this isa great system. We, the nor-mal everyday working classfolks that make up a large

majority of the local popula-tion, can vote for the candi-date of our choice and sendto office the person wechoose. I strongly believe inthat. Even with all those folkswho say, “I’m only one vote -I can’t make a difference”, Istill feel that I, as a voter, canmake a difference. Especiallywhen I am joined by all myfellow voters.

We all have one vote.Even those “powerful peo-ple” only have one vote. Andthere are more of us thanthere are of “them”. We justneed to be sure to exeercisethat advantage at the polls.

Trendy Times does notplan to endorse any candi-date. Likewise we will not beagainst any candidate forany office. Chooseing theright candidate is a job thatevery voter needs to do forthemselves. What Trendy

Times will do is remind youof your right, your privilege,and your duty, to knowsomething about the candi-dates who are running for of-fice and to make a decisionbased on that knowledge. Nomore than that can be askedof any voter.

Bradford, Vermont: Brad Roy,a Woodsville, NH residentand Nicholas Carbee, aNorth Haverhill, NH resident,have achieved their Vermontjourneyman plumber li-censes. Becoming a journey-man plumber is a majorundertaking that requiresyears of work, study andpreparation. ARC currentlyemploys 5 fourth-yearplumber apprentices, 7 jour-neyman plumbers and 11master plumbers.

To become a licensedplumber in either the State ofVermont or State of NewHampshire, an apprentice-ship program must be com-pleted. The apprenticeshipprogram begins when a can-didate is hired by an appren-tice sponsor (i.e. employer).An apprentice sponsor mustbe a Master Plumber. Theapprentice then begins a 4year program which includes

2000 hours per year of on-the-job training and 144hours of classroom-relatedinstruction. The classroominstruction is run by state in-structors at specific trainingsites around the state. Therelated instruction includessafety, construction math,plans & spec reading, in-struction in plumbing code,heating systems, and a vari-ety of other related topics.

Upon completion of the 4years or 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and success-ful completion of the relatedinstruction, the candidate willreceive a completion certifi-cate from the State’s Depart-ment of Labor and thecandidate is eligible to takethe Journeyman WrittenExam. When the candidatesuccessfully passes theexam, he can then apply forhis Journeyman License witheither state. All candidates

must also successful com-plete 10 Hours of OSHA Con-struction Safety Instruction byan authorized instructor.

So why should you hire alicensed plumber?

Plumbing isn't difficult,but it requires a lot of knowl-edge. Code requirementsare just a small part;plumbers need parts knowl-edge and experience withthe materials. For example,knowing how hard you cancrank on PVC before itcracks takes time to master.Not having a feel for this canturn a $10 repair into a minordisaster.

Perhaps the most impor-tant reason to hire a licensedplumber is related to yourhealth and safety. Plumbersnot only fix leaking pipes, butthey help prevent the spreadof diseases that could occurwhen there is a cross con-nection between sewer and

water lines. Plumbers workon pressure vessels (waterheaters) that could explodeand destroy a home if notproperly installed.

When you have a majorremodeling project, you’llwant a plumber who workswell with the other contrac-tors. While many plumbersseem to know plumbing andcan handle the repairsneeded when working alone,they may have little experi-ence with extensive home re-modeling projects thatrequire coordination with oth-ers on the job, such as elec-tricians and carpenters.

When choosing aplumber, ask for proof of a li-cense. In Vermont and NewHampshire, plumbers are re-quired to be licensed. Anyplumber you consider shouldalso hold a current workers'compensation policy and aminimum of $500,000 liabilityinsurance.

Establish a relationshipwith a plumber before youactually need one.

Hire a plumber to dononemergency repairs or fix-

ture installations during nor-mal hours. You’re more likelyto get their attention if you'rean established customer andnot a panicked stranger call-ing at 10 p.m. on a Fridaynight with a gushing wastepipe in the cellar.

He emulates the Palins,Bachmans, Becks, et al., in our superficialsociety who have recently made it "trendy"to spout off half-baked and even dangerousopinions without benefit of informed reason.For example, the cheetahs to whichpete03785 refers kill the weakest and mostvulnerable in their Coalition not to be viciousbut to ensure the ultimate survival of thespecies: it's called Evolution. It may not look"nice" to a human viewer of a television pro-gram; on the other hand, no animals otherthan humans (unless terribly mistreated byhumans) are cruel for cruelty's sake. Unliketheir human counterparts, animals do notwage wars for the sake of greed or perceivedmoral or religious righteousness; they do notpollute and destroy our oceans; they do notpicket the funerals of fallen soldiers withhateful signs; they do not bully, torture, ormurder those with whom they disagree.It would serve pete03785 well to spend

less time and energy writing opinions aboutbumper stickers, and more time informinghimself with facts from journals, books, andnewspapers. (He could start with the coverarticle in the 8/14/10 issue of Time, "WhatAnimals Think.") He might then wish to ex-plore the myriad research which provesthat the better we humans treat otherspecies, the better we tend to treat eachother and this gift of our planet.One final point: what, pray tell, does a

Charlotte,

Thank you for writing what others may be thinking. I have heard similar

comments from others regarding “Trendy Bumpers” but you are the first to

put words together and submit them for others to view.

One of the initial intents of pete03785 and Trendy Bumpers was to make

people think, as well as react. It is the reaction that will start the dialogue that

moves people from their own views to a more well thought out viewpoint. It is a

wonderful thing for people to have opinions, viewpoints or ideals. It is better

when they can share them with others. And I feel it is best when people who dis-

agree can take the time to listen to each other, have a viable conversation, and

in the end have a stronger viewpoint that will probably be at least somewhat

different from the viewpoint they started with. That is was a debate is all about.

So again, Thank You, Charlotte for putting words together and offering

your opinion. It is one of the best things about this country.

Winters, JonathanHarshman, III. Corporal.Born on 11 November 1925to Jonathan Harshman andAlice Kilgore Rodgers Win-ters, in Dayton, Ohio. Lifewas pleasant until he wasseven years of age when hisparents divorced. Poor Alicehad to go to work in a factory,later working for a magazine,then landed a job interview-ing people on radio. Hisgrandfather Winters more orless was his constant com-panion and they had a hell ofa time, enjoying the manythings a retired bank ownercould afford.

Jon did very poorly inschool, especially as he gotinto the latter years. He, likeso many of us, day-dreamedabout what we would do inthe Foreign Legion, or, eventhe U.S. Marines. So, at ageseventeen, he enlisted in theMarines on 20 October1943, attending Parris Islandin January of 1944. Aftergraduation, suffering from akidney ailment, Jon went tothe naval hospital atPhiladelphia, remainingthere for several months.

Upon release he wassent to Sea School atPortsmouth, VA and aftergraduation, on 23 October1944, Private Wintersshipped aboard the BonHomme Richard, CV-31, thesecond ship of that name. Hebecame a member of theMarine Detachment, andthey all sailed from Norfolk,

VA, in March 1945, for thePacific.

In March they joined TaskForce 38.4 and arrived offOkinawa. Not long after, on 1July his ship participated toround-the-clock air strikesagainst Japan, which contin-ued until the end of the war,15 August. Like mostMarines, he served as ananti-aircraft crewman. Whileaboard, the Marines’, includ-ing Winters, quarters wereright above the bomb-stor-age magazine, which mini-mized the sleeping habits ofeveryone. Fortunately, nohits on his ship are recorded.

While aboard that ship,he did various absurd mono-logues to entertain theMarines and crew. In one ofthem he was playing theship’s captain and as theship was supposed to begoing down, the captain,threatening the crew with hisforty-five, was the first overthe side and into the onlyboat, all the while firing hispistol, kachow–kachow tokeep anyone else from join-ing him. Unbeknownst tohim, someone had told thecaptain and he had Wintersperform this act on the flightdeck before most of the crewwhile he was telling thatstory. The captain sittingwatching the performance,pretended to be angry thenlaughed like hell – then therest of the ship’s comple-ment also let go. I know thisstory as a fact.

The ship was part of theThird Landing Force basedat the Yokosuka Naval Sta-tion, where the Marinesserved ashore on guard duty,from 30 August until 6 Sep-tember. He departed the shipon 31 October and returnedstateside; first to Treasure Is-land, and then to the 1stGuard Company, MB,Philadelphia Navy Yard.

From there he was dis-charged on 1 March 1946and went back to Ohio to re-

enter high school and obtainhis diploma. Then, he be-came a traveler engaging invarious jobs that would helpfeed him. Back to school: col-lege briefly at Kenyon inGambier, OH, then the Day-ton Art Institute from which hegraduated in 1950. It wasthere he met and marriedEileen Ann Schauder in 1948.

With her encourage-ment, he entered a localhumor contest and won thefirst prize, a wristwatch.Then, in 1950, to a radio sta-tion in Columbus, OH, wherehe performed for three years.With barely enough moneyto feed him for a day, he wentto NYC. For the next severalyears he worked night clubs,on radio, including ArthurGodfrey’s Talent Scouts.

Then in 1954, Jack Paarprovided his nation-wide ex-posure on television. In 1956his 15 minute weekly show,the Jonathan Winters TVShow. To keep up a hecticschedule, cigarettes andScotch help sooth him. It alsocontributed in 1959 to anervous breakdown.

He managed to over-come that in a few years hewas back in the public’s eye.In 1961 he began makingmovies. Some of the hits in-cluded: Alakazam the Great;It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, MadWorld, in 1963. Then TheLoved Ones, The Russiansare coming; and a slew ofothers. In the meantime hewas spending lots of time ina pile of TV shows, duringthe 1970's and 1990's. Onerole he might have enjoyedwas in Davis Rules in 1991-92, in which he played a re-tired Marine gunnerysergeant and father of RandyQuaid, which role garneredhim an Emmy.

Other works have kepthim quite busy. He has, todate, written a number ofbooks and he now lives qui-etly with his wife of over halfa century, in California.

A Good-bye To Glenn Hatch, And A What’s Next? For Haverhill

It was announced abouttwo weeks ago that the Townof Haverhill was losing itsfirst ever full time RecreationDirector. Glenn Hatch washired about five years agofrom a number of well quali-fied applicants. The interviewprocess took several weeksand in my opinion the finaldecision was a good one.

Glenn has set the markhigh for this positron. Beforethat the town had only a part-time director. The main func-tion being the summerHARP program, but also put-ting in a few hours eachweek the rest of the year as-sisting volunteer members ofthe Haverhill RecreationCommission in running otherprograms. Those other pro-grams included Haverhill’sHaunted Happenings, thePaddle the Border springand fall events, plus teendances.

With the hiring of Glennthere was the opportunity toexpand the recreational op-portunities offered to the res-idents of Haverhill. Glennachieved this with plenty ofdrive, passion, caring andtime spent. Though the jobwas a salaried forty hours aweek position, there weremany weeks, especially dur-ing the summer programschedule, when Glenn put inmuch more than the timecalled for.

It should also be men-tioned that Glenn was a verysuccessful high school

coach. Along with DanaHuntington and others hehelped the Woodsville HighSchool girls softball teamachieve their first ever Cham-pionship this past June.Glenn also coached on theother side of the river leadingthe Blue Mt. Union girls soc-cer team to over one hun-dred wins.

Glenn’s departure fromthe recreation scene in thisarea will certainly be missed.But equally as important isthe question of “what willhappen with the RecreationDirector position in Haver-hill?” It has been reportedthat the Haverhill SelectBoard is studying all aspectsof the town budget to seewhat and where money canbe saved. Good job. That isone of the key aspects of thejob of a Select Board mem-ber. But as a former memberand chair of the HaverhillRecreation Commission Iask the Select Board to notcut out this particular posi-tion. Many studies haveshown that strong opportuni-ties in the recreation areaare a real selling point for acommunity. The HaverhillRecreation Program hasgrown over the past dozenyears to a point where it issomething good to point to inHaverhill. Don’t let this pro-gram slip away due tobudget cuts.

1 cup all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1/2 stick butter, softened2/3 cup sugar (and another 1-1/2 tablespoon

for sprinkling the cake top)

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract1 large egg1/2 cup buttermilk (OR, scant 1/2 cup milk

with 1/2 teaspoon vinegar added)1 cup fresh raspberries (OR individually frozen raspberries)

Whenever I see a recipe fora small cake, I always give ita second look, and here’swhy: Unless I’m having com-pany, or making it specificallyfor a gathering, I find full-sizecakes often don’t get eatenbefore they get stale or dry. Ihate wasting time, effort, andingredients to end up withwhat amounts to expensivefood for the wild birds! Igleaned this little gem fromthe pages of the June 2009issue of Gourmet magazine,and since we are in the mid-dle of raspberry season, Ithought now would be agreat time to share it withyou. Don’t be put off by thefact that the word “buttermilk”is in the title. While butter-milk is a wonderful ingredi-ent, the plain old truth is thatI rarely have it on hand, be-cause there just aren’t thatmany uses for it, and I cer-tainly am not going to buy aquart for the mere 1/2 cup re-quired here. There is a veryold and very simple trick for

making a substitute for but-termilk, and it works everysingle time. Just add a littlewhite or cider vinegar to reg-ular milk and let it sit at roomtemperature for a while.VOILA!!! The acid works itsmagic, and you can just pre-tend that you’re one of thosepeople who actually keepbuttermilk on hand! I alsofound that you can happilysubstitute the whole frozenraspberries (not the kind insyrup) for the fresh oneswithout any discernible differ-ence in the end product. Just

toss the frozen berries with abit of flour before adding tothe batter to keep them fromsinking to the bottom. Again,sometimes a much moreeconomical choice in themiddle of winter! Thanks tothe buttermilk (fake or other-wise), this cake has a reallynice, fine crumb, and thesugar sprinkled on the topjust before baking adds agreat little crunch to it. Servedwith a scoop of vanilla icecream and a cup of hot cof-fee or tea, it’s my definition ofa perfect dessert!

Raspberry Buttermilk cake

Preheat oven to 400°F with rack in the middle. Butter and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Beat butter and 2/3 cup sugar with an electric mixer at medium speed until pale andfluffy, about 2 minutes, and then beat in vanilla. Add egg and beat well.

At low speed, mix in flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with buttermilk, beginningand ending with flour, and mixing until just combined.

Spoon batter into prepared cake pan, smoothing top. Scatter raspberries evenly overthe top (if using the frozen berries, toss them with a little flour to coat before scattering them,to prevent them from sinking to the bottom) and sprinkle with the remaining 1-1/2 Tablespoonsugar.

Bake on center rack of oven until cake is golden and a wooden pick inserted into centercomes out clean, 25-30 minutes (the truth is, my oven actually takes more like 45 minutes.)Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack and cool to warm, 10-15 minutes more.Invert onto a serving plate.
