The Security market in India has witnessed a growth at a CAGR of 14%, and is expected to be further fuelled by creaon of addional infrastructure like industrial complexes, public infrastructure, residenal complexes, etc. This immense growth opportunity has further been fuelled by government iniaves like ‘Smart Cies’ and ‘Make in India’.

Refurbishing of the security strategy and discussion about the cung-edge technologies is the need of the hour for the country as well as organisaons. Proacve policies by the Indian government can allow an ecosystem where businesses can be developed more easily by granng industry status to further catalyse this growth. This will open up a huge market for leading players in the security industry. This is also the age of smart technology and to match the pace of smart cies, the need for smart security and surveillance system is very crical.

The private security industry in India also provides employment to more than 70 lakh people, which is expected to rise manifold as the size of the industry increases. Government policies like making guards in schools and ATMs mandatory and instalment of CCTV cameras at various locaons have resulted in accelerang the demand. For example, a back of the envelope calculaon shows that there are around 15 lakh educaon instuons in India and the mandatory 3 security guards on a 24-hour basis only translate into 45 lakh new jobs.

As AI becomes more broadly adopted across industries, it is likely to be more widely incorporated in video surveillance. At the same me, video surveillance soluons will go far beyond funconing as a simple monitoring tool to become an indispensable aid to organisaons by providing useful insights that improve business operaons. The importance of accessible cloud-based servers that can easily store and analyse the accumulated data, will also increase. Going beyond being an efficient storage repository, sophiscated analycs will use cloud processing to analyse the stored data and provide useful insights.

Vercal markets in the security industry are increasingly requiring more specialised devices and soluons to meet their unique requirements. With the emergence of the 4th industrial revoluon, the presence of smart vercals will be more prominent, and video surveillance companies must be ready to provide soluons for smart cies, factories, transportaon and retail organisaons.

Indian economy is on the path to touch $5 trillion in GDP and a natural consequence of this progress is visible in the form of growing urbanisaon, industrial acvity, retail boom and movement of men and material. Increased concerns regarding security of men, money and material has led to the growth of security market at a CAGR of 14%. This growth is fuelled by creaon of addional infrastructure like industrial complexes, public infrastructure, residenal complexes and the humungous opportunity presented by government iniaves like ‘Smart Cies’ and ‘Make in India’. Moreover, as AI becomes more broadly adopted across industries, it is likely to be more widely incorporated in video surveillance. Edge-based AI (which filters and processes data locally on a camera), will be more ubiquitous, enabling end-to-end AI technology. With IoT devices becoming ubiquitous, the importance of cybersecurity has never been more important. Today’s cyber-aacks are more intelligent and advanced than ever, so building cyber-resilient security systems is no longer an opon, but an imperave.Smart cies, factories, financial instuons and retailers today require scalable video surveillance soluons which are closely interconnected with other devices and networks,

making the importance of cybersecurity paramount. According to IDC, a provider of informaon technology market intelligence, there will be about 175 zeabytes of data in the world by the year 2025, with much of it stored in the cloud and data centres around the world. At the same me, video surveillance soluons will go far beyond funconing as a simple monitoring tool to become an indispensable aid to organisaons by providing useful insights that improve business operaons.Vercal markets in the security industry are increasingly requiring more specialised devices and soluons to meet their unique requirements. NEW DELHI: The Congress on

Thursday accused the govern-

ment of muzzling the voices of

the people through “draconian

measures” such as shutting of

internet and misusing prohibi-

tory orders, and claimed that

“undeclared emergency” has

been imposed in the country.

Former Congress president

Rahul Gandhi attacked the gov-

ernment for crackdown on

peaceful protests over the Citi-

zenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“This government has no

right to shut down colleges, tele-

phones & the Internet, to halt

metro trains and to impose #Sec-

tion144 to suppress India’s voice

& prevent peaceful protests. To

do so is an insult to India’s soul,”

tweeted Rahul Gandhi, who is

abroad.

Earlier, his party colleague

Abhishek Manu Singhvi told

reporters that “undeclared

emergency” has been imposed in

the country and the Bharatiya

Janata Party (BJP) government

has become “adamkhor (man-

eater)”.

“This is not BJP rule, it is

undeclared emergency imposed

in the country, which is being

run in the name of normalcy. It is

the same definition of normalcy

that is being adopted in Kashmir

and the same is being adopted in

all over the country,” he said.

“There is an atmosphere of vio-

lence across the country. This

BJP rule looks like ‘adamkhor’

(man-eater). Normalcy will

return to the country only when

this government is told that the

time has come for it to go.”

He said the BJP government

has redefined the definition of

normalcy and its Jammu and

Kashmir definition of normalcy

now prevails in the rest of the

country.

Congress general secretary

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

tweeted, “The voice of people

cannot be silenced by force.

Every time force is applied to

dominate and rule, every time

you beat and suppress, every

time you push people to the wall,

they will rise up stronger, their

resolve will strengthen and their

voice will grow louder.”

NEW DELHI: As protests against the

Citizenship (Amendment) Act

[CAA] intensified in the national

capital on Thursday, the Bharat-

iya Janata Party (BJP is organis-

ing events and meeting Hindu

and Sikh refugees from neigh-

bouring states in a bid to counter

the protests.

With assembly elections

likely to be scheduled early next

year, the BJP is trying to galva-

nise public support in favour of

the central government’s deci-

sion.

On Thursday, BJP’s national

working president JP Nadda met

a group of Sikh refugees from

Afghanistan who are living in

Delhi, especially Tilak Nagar.

“Such decisions are taken

under the leadership of Modi ji,

which are on humanitarian

ground and in the interest of the

country. I want to tell our oppo-

nent to leave vote bank politics

and visit refugee camps to see the

suffering of these people,” Nadda

tweeted.

While students and civil soci-

ety members took to the streets

to raise their voice against the

CAA, a group Hindu and Sikh

refugees from Pakistan, Bangla-

desh and Afghanistan staged a

demonstration in support of the

Act and “against the divisive pol-

itics of the opposition parties” at

Rajghat on Thursday.

While addressing the refu-

gees, BJP MLA Vijender Gupta,

who is the leader of the opposi-

tion in the Delhi Assembly, said,

“The AAP and the Congress are

exploiting the situation for their

nefarious ends. They are out to

vitiate the atmosphere in Delhi.”

The party has organised 300-

odd corner meetings in the city,

starting from Thursday, to cre-

ate awareness among public

about CAA. Vijendra Sachdeva,

Delhi’s BJP election in-charge

for the media, “In these meet-

ings, people will be told about the

CAA, its benefits and especially

about the fact that it will not

harm the Indian Muslims in any

way. This will help people to

understand the CAA so chances

of getting mislead would become

bleak,” he said. These meetings

will be held in the next three days

before the Prime Minister’s rally

on Sunday.

With Prime Minister Naren-

dra Modi’s rally— where the

party will thank the PM for the

Centre’s decision to give owner-

ship rights to residents of unau-

thorised colonies — planned on

December 22, the party is making

extra effort to reach out to people

and put forward the govern-

ment’s view as address the issue

of CAA.

Union minister Prakash Java-

dekar, who is in-charge of Delhi

assembly elections, held a meet-

ing with resident welfare associ-

ations in Burari on Thursday to

tell them about the Centre’s deci-

sion regarding unauthorised col-

onies ahead of PM’s rally. Java-

dekar also spoke about CAA.

“No country in the world pro-

tects illegal intruders. Today we

are against illegal foreign

intruders. @AamAadmiParty

And @INCIndia In favor of for-

eign intruders. Confusions are

being made about the Citizen-

ship Amendment Act and people

are being misled,” Javadekar

tweeted along with a video of his

speech.

BJP’s Delhi unit chief, Manoj

Tiwari, blamed the Opposition

parties for “misguiding” the

public and trying to “vitiate” the

atmosphere on the pretext of the

CAA.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari

took to Twitter to invite Delhi

Congress chief Subhash Chopra

and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

for discussion on CAA at the

Central Park in Connaught

Place on December 20. “I invite

@SChopraINC and @Arvind-

Kejriwal to come at Central Park

CP tomorrow at 3pm to clear the

doubts and confusion of the Mus-

lim community,” Tiwari

Tweeted.

Responding to Tiwari’s invite

Delhi Congress chief Subhash

Chopra said, “The BJP at the

state level themselves are una-

ware of what the CAA truly

entails, so what discussion do we

have with them? The act is a

threat to very secular fabric on

which our country is built and

lakhs of people are on the streets

today to save our constitution

from the BJP.”

NEW DELHI: Two stadiums — Rajiv

Gandhi Stadium in Bawana and

Maharaja Surajmal Stadium in

Nangloi — turned into tempo-

rary police lock-up where over

400 people detained from across

Delhi were kept for almost six

hours.

A total of around 1,200 people

were detained, including those

from different political parties,

for protesting in north and cen-

tral Delhi areas, demanding the

scrapping of the Citizenship

(Amendment) Act. Police said

they did not have permission for

these protests. The rest were kept

in as many as half a dozen police

stations across the city, said

police.

The detainees were trans-

ported in buses from areas such

as Red Fort, Delhi Gate, Darya-

ganj, ITO and Mandi House. All

detainees were released by 7pm,

said police

Prominent among the detain-

ees were East Delhi former mem-

ber of parliament (MP) Con-

gress’s Sandeep Dikshit, Swaraj

Abhiyan chief Yogendra Yadav,

and Left leaders – Sitaram

Yechury and D Raja.

Police imposed Section 144 of

CrPC (prohibiting unlawful

assembly) around Red Fort,

Mandi House, as well as around

Jamia University, and areas such

as Seelampur, Jafarabad, Mauj-

pur, Welcome and Brijpuri where

violent protests took place on

Sunday and Tuesday.

Multiple police officers that

HT spoke to said that the two sta-

diums in outer Delhi were chosen

as they were nearly 30-40 kilome-

tres away from central and north

Delhi areas where the protesters

had assembled.

“The average time to reach the

two stadiums is one and half

hour, if the traffic is not heavy on

the routes. The idea was remove

the protesters before they

reached their scheduled gather-

ing points and take them to fara-

way places so that they do not

return easily and rejoin the pro-

test,” said a senior police officer.

Unlike previous times when

protesters were kept confined in

the stadiums by locking the gates

and deploying personnel, the

police said that the detained pro-

testors were allowed to roam

freely and that they were pro-

vided water, tea, and food. In pic-

ture shared by Delhi Police, Swa-

raj Abhiyan chief Yogendra

Yadav was seen having lunch

with four other detainees.

“The newly passed Citizenship

Amendment Act is the biggest

attack on the Indian Constitution

and we oppose it. This is the first

time after independence when

our citizenship has been linked

with our religion. Our freedom

fighters have fought against this

very idea. This act is against the

soul of the constitution,” Yadav

said.

Senior Congress leader and

former president of Delhi Pra-

desh Congress Committee

(DPCC) Ajay Maken’s son Auja-

swi Maken, daughter and wife

were also detained from near

Mandi House while they were

talking to the media

When I reached Mandi House,

there were hardly any protesters.

There were journalists there who

were interviewing us when the

police suddenly came, held me by

my collar and dragged me into the

bus,” said Aujaswi. “Neither

were we carrying placards, nor

were we raising slogans. We were

just the three of us together so

were not even violating the law.”

Sandeep Dikshit was detained

near Mandi House when he was

on his way to the protest at the

Red Fort. “I was not allowed to go

to Red Fort (for protest), so, I

came to Mandi House,” he said.

Yechury and Raja were

detained at Mandi House.

“People are being detained

from the Mandi House which

includes the senior leaders of

Communist Parties. We condemn

this attitude of the government

which cannot tolerate democ-

racy. Shame. #NOtoCAA,”

tweeted CPI (M).

Among those who were

detained from Red Fort were

President All India Student Asso-

ciation (AISA) Sucheta De and

student leader Umar Khalid.

“Picked up by Delhi Police

from Red Fort. We had gathered

to protest against the divisive

CAB-NRC on Ashfaq & Bismil’s

martyrdom day. I appeal to all

peacefully keep protesting till

unconstitutional CAB-NRC is

rolled back. This is something we

owe to Ashfaq & Bismil’s sacri-

fice,” tweeted Khalid.

“Around 70 protesters were

brought to Rajiv Gandhi stadium.

We kept the gates open so that

they can go out and come inside.

Since it was cold, we had

arranged mattresses for the

detained protestors. We gave

them water and tea. Later, all of

them were released and they all

left in buses to their respective

destinations,” said Gaurav

Sharma, deputy commissioner of

police (outer-north).

Police said that fruits, includ-

ing bananas and dates, were

served to detained protestors at

Surjmal stadium where about 350

protestors were kept detained.

Delhi Police spokesperson

Mandeep Singh Randhawa said

that around 17,000 security per-

sonnel, including 5000 from Cen-

tral Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

and Rapid Action Force (RAF),

were deployed.

“A total of 100 buses were

placed at the scheduled protest-

ing sites to remove the detained

protestors. As many as 10 DCPs

and additional DCPs were

present at those places to ensure

peaceful protests. We had meet-

ings with senior police officers till

late Wednesday night to plan our

strategies following inputs that

thousands of people would join

the protests,” said Randhawa.

the Centre should repeal

the recently amended

has triggered wide-

spread protests in Delhi

country.

NEW DELHI: Citing large-scale vio-

lations, the Delhi government on

Thursday ordered department

stores in the city to stop selling

wine and beer from Friday, sen-

ior officials said.

The decision, which is likely

to affect around 125 departmen-

tal stores in the city, was taken

during a cabinet meeting on

December 11 and was communi-

cated to concerned departments

through letter in the next day,

said a senior official in Delhi’s

excise department.

“The rules allow such stores

to utilise up to 15% of the floor

area space for storage and sale of

beer and wine. In the last few

months, large-scale inspections

were conducted across the city

and one-third of the total num-

ber of stores were found violat-

ing the rule,” the official said.

Around three months ago,

Delhi’s deputy chief minister

and excise minister Manish Siso-

dia had inspected a store in his

assembly constituency (east

Delhi’s Patparganj) and found it

was violating the rule, said

another senior officer.

“The council of ministers has

decided to withdraw all L-12 and

L-12F Licenses [the categories

that pertains to selling wine and

beer] with effect from December

20, 2019… The licensee shall be

eligible for refund of fee paid in

advance after deducting amount

recoverable by the government

under the Delhi Excise Act,” said

the order issued on Thursday, a

copy of which HT has reviewed.

Sisodia confirmed this to HT

on Thursday.

Five licenses were cancelled

till last month and around 120

will be automatically cancelled

with the recently-issued order,

an officer said. He further said,

“Shop owners, however, will not

bear any losses for the existing

stock as Excise Act provides for

methods of disposal and transfer

under such circumstances.”

“But nobody knows how long

it would take us to clear our

existing stocks,” said Subhash

Barman, manager at one such

departmental store. He further

said, “It is not correct to punish

all shop owners for some viola-

tors.”

“With this order, several shop

employees can lose their jobs as

wine and beer counters shut

down. This is unjust,” said man-

ager of a departmental store in

Defence Colony who did not wish

to be identified.

For violating rules, departmental stores told to not sell beer & wine

temperature only 15° C, seven

degrees below normal, and a

minimum of 5.2°C, three degrees

below normal.

The minimum temperature

was the lowest for the season

with bitter cold air, and overcast

skies that didn’t allow sun’s

warmth to pierce through. There

was dense fog in most parts of the

city in the morning hours with

visibility of only 100 metres

which improved to 600 metres

after 10 am.

Delhi recorded an air quality

index (AQI) of 362 in “very poor”

category at 4pm, according to the

central pollution control board

(CPCB). This after the Capital

recorded “moderate” air on

December 16 and 17, and “poor”

air on December 18, at the same

time.

According to ministry of earth

sciences’ air quality early warn-

ing system, air quality is likely to

deteriorate further and may

reach in upper end of very poor

category on December 20. “This

is mainly due to low wind speed

and high humidity. Wind speed

has been less than 8 kmph on

Thursday and humidity makes

pollution particles heavy. Condi-

tions not favourable for disper-

sion,” said Kuldeep Shrivastava,

head, regional weather forecast-

ing centre.

Thursday was the third

“severe” cold day in the past four

days.

On December 16, the maxi-

mum temperature was 12.9°C, 10

degrees below normal and the

coldest December day in 16

years. December 17 was also a

“severe” cold day with a maxi-

mum temperature of only 12.2°C,

over 10 degrees below normal

and only 2 degrees higher than

night (minimum) temperature of

10.4 degrees. On December 18,

there was some sunshine in the

day which helped pull maximum

temperature to 18°C but low

clouds shrouded most of north

India once again on Thursday.

According to IMD, a severe

cold day is considered based on

two parameters—a minimum

temperature of under 10°C and

maximum temperature 6.4° C

below normal.

But on Thursday both the

minimum and maximum tem-

peratures in Delhi were

extremely low.

“There is significant moisture

in the air, wind speed had also

reduced on Wednesday and

unlike previous days there was

no cloud layer. This led to radia-

tional cooling (ground radiated

heat) on Thursday morning

bringing down minimum tem-

peratures. There will be dense

fog and cold on Friday also. On

Saturday we are expecting light

rain because of an approaching

wester disturbance,” said Shriv-

astava.

The moisture in the air is also

helping the formation of low

clouds up to 2 kms from the sur-

face which is also screening sun-

shine. Shrivastava said the mini-

mum temperature had fallen to

2.6 degree on December 28 last

year.

Meteorologists attributed the

unusually cold conditions to the

western disturbance (WD)

which brought heavy snowfall in

the Himalayan region — Uttara-

khand, Jammu and Kashmir and

Himachal Pradesh — and rain-

fall across the northern plains.

Capital’s third day of chilly weather, air quality may deteriorate today

n It was the third “severe” cold day in the past four days. AMAL KS/HT
