Action against the closure of Arley Sports Centre

On Thursday 19th May a meeting was held between representatives of KASCO and NWBC. The general objectives of the meeting was to explore how, or if KASCO and NWBC could work together to ensure a long term future for the Arley sport centre that would be beneficial to both the users of the facility and the NWBC. Before any discussions started Councillor David Humphrey’s stated that contrary to the believe no formal decision had been made about the closure of the facility, he went on to state that there was a need to reduce cost and the closure of the facility was the preferred proposal based on a number of factor. After a lengthy discussion on a number of points raised by the KASCO representatives the NWBC stated that they were currently reviewing the replies from the consultation paper and the results would be put before a full council meeting on the 29th June and at that time a formal decision with be made either to close the facility or not. The Chairperson for KASCO made it clear that the KASCO membership would do all they can to ensure the facility remains open for the benefit of the current and future membership.

AARRLLEEYY SSPPOORRTTSS CCEENNTTRREE..

Below are extracts from correspondence received from Amanda Casey, unfortunately due to the restriction of space we are unable to print the full content of the correspondence, but if anyone would like a copy of the full content contact [email protected]. The Arley Neighbourhood Plan (Arley Parish Council, 2015) states that following public consultations the vision of Arley is that: ‘In 2030 the parish of Arley will cater for all ages and abilities within a semi-rural environment designed to make residents proud of their village as a desirable and safe place to live and work. The adoption of innovation and expansion will be encouraged only when it benefits the community. The development and maintenance of Community Assets and Facilities, which requires that: A building or land in a local authority's area will be listed as an asset of community value if in the opinion of North Warwickshire Borough Council: Current primary use of the building/land or use of the building/land in the recent past furthers the social well-being or social interests (cultural, recreational, or sporting interests) of the local community. The response to the question in the Arley Neighbourhood Plan survey carried out in 2015 reference the Arley Sports Centre, it was established that the facility was rated as ‘Important’ to approximately 230 out of 450 respondents; ‘quite important’ to approximately 120 respondents; and ‘not important’ to only 50. Also in the survey it established that villagers valued the facilities available to them and appreciated that Arley had many advantages compared to other rural communities who had lost shops, schools, leisure facilities and so on. There is support for measures that will ensure that facilities are retained and make it possible to maintain and expand them in the future.” A thriving community needs to maintain and improve Community Facilities in Arley which includes the Sports Centre. This requirement is supported by a number of relevant District Plan Policies which states that, Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough has the highest levels of deprivation in the County, and ranks as the 111th most deprived Local Authority District out of the 326 Local Authorities in England (amongst 34% of most deprived) with CV7 8FN (Arley Sports Centre) ranked at 30% (Public Health England, 2015). Hill Top is one of the top 10% most deprived areas in England (Warwickshire JSNA, 2015a). Inactivity levels are ten per cent higher in the most deprived areas in England compared to the least deprived. Evidence suggests a strong link between obesity levels and deprivation with a higher prevalence of obesity in young children from deprived households than affluent households and the proportion of year six children who are either overweight or obese, is 37% in North Warwickshire. In 2012, 27.5% of adults were classified as obese, worse than the average for England. It is also recognised that four in ten (42%) cases of cancer can be prevented by lifestyle changes (such as not smoking, keeping a healthy body weight, reducing alcohol consumption, eating a healthy balanced diet).

All of the above require that not only is the Arley Sports Centre kept open but that it should receive increased investment in order to meet the health and social needs of its local population. There are a number of funding initiatives available if appropriate leadership from the Council is forthcoming. It is shocking to consider that the proposal to close Arley Sport Centre is completely counter to the ethos displayed in the most recent edition of the Borough Council’s magazine for the people of North Warwickshire – North Talk. Spring Hill Medical Centre Arley News has been advised by Spring Hill Medical Centre that from February to April 558 people did not turn up for their appointment. These figures have increased over the previous quarter and therefore continue to have a direct impact on many patients trying to get the appointments they need.

From Our Guerilla Gardener

Well it’s certainly a confusing time for gardeners. One week cold, miserable and overnight frosts then next hot and dry. I have already lost one batch of runner beans so am starting off a new batch this week. The lateness won’t matter to the seeds and I just might be cropping late into summer. Fingers crossed the summer is a good one. One a better note, my potatoes are just beginning to show their first shoots. I am growing in bags and pots, as usual, and I find this method suits me. I also tend to completely fill the container with soil as soon as I’ve planted the chitted potatoes. This means I don’t have to worry about earthing up. You must, however, not scrimp on watering. Potatoes love a lot of water. I shall be growing red and yellow tomatoes for a change this year. Also I’ve have been given some mini plum tomato plants, which are good for making tomato sauce apparently. I am growing these in pots and then I am using another pot with the bottom cut out to give the plants extra depth for the roots but also hoping that the soil retains some more water. I use water retaining crystals which I find work really well. I have decided to change the variety of garden pea that I grow and have chosen one called “Colossal Giant”. As its name suggests, this pea with grow to eight feet if left alone. I shan’t be doing that as I’m not that tall so shall be pinching out the tops at six feet to help me harvest. I am growing these on a wigwam, the same as my beans, so I hope I am pleased with the change. I am also growing cauliflowers and sprouts to see if these are successful in containers. The cauliflowers are called “Snowball” and they are just six inches across when fully grown so just right the right size for me. I am also growing a cut and come again variety, which I have never come across before, so another experiment. Hope all the changes are successful. I am growing more astrantias this year. They were such a hit with the bees last year that I decided to buy more. I did try to grow some from seed, but was not successful. I need all the pollinators with all the fruit and veg I am planting out. The strawberries have been moved to new containers, which are much deeper and wider. They appear to be happy as they are all flowering now, so a bumper crop is hoped for. One success though has been my wallflowers. I managed to get some (free) seeds and put them in a seed tray and kept them watered and they all rooted. Great news and I am not that good with growing stuff from seed usually. My primulas and primroses have really like the wet winter we have just had and for the first time my daffodils have flowered. I think they like it wetter and I did add some more soil to the bed so they must like the extra depth. Anyway, they flowered beautifully. Everything else is now bursting through and I have to keep an eye out for my number one enemy, the slug. Unfortunately, my garden isn’t big enough for a pond, so I don’t have any frogs to keep the numbers down. I’ve tried beer traps, but that doesn’t seem to help. Nematodes do work but it’s expensive. I’ll just have to be more vigilant. So, here’s to another wonderful year in the garden. Hope the weather isn’t too extreme.

TTIIMMEE TTOO SSAAYY GGOOOODD--BBYYEE

After nearly thirteen years as Rector of Arley and Ansley and thirty-three years in ministry it's time to retire. Since I announced my departure people have asked lots of questions but two stand out. The first is "What are you going to do?" Me and Pauline are moving to Mapperley, North-East Nottingham to be near our oldest son and the grandchildren. We are already committed to a day a week baby-sitting but in addition, after a break of six months; I also hope to start working voluntarily for the church two days a week. I will be meeting the Archdeacon of Nottingham early in July to see whether there might be a gap that suits my particular interests and abilities. Otherwise it's taking things a bit more gently and enjoying having more time for Pauline, for the family and for myself. The second is "What will happen to church life in Arley?" Services will continue every Sunday at St. Wilfrid's at 9am and on alternate weeks (1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays) at St. Michael's at 10.30a.m. Messy Church will continue on the last Thursday of each month. I have been assured that plans are definitely in place to appoint a successor. My hope and prayer is that s/he might be in post by next Easter. I think an earlier appointment is unlikely. I hope that, as well as finding things to celebrate and build upon, whoever comes will bring fresh ideas and approaches and I pray that God will bless you all on this new journey. In the meantime for all your enquiries please contact the churchwarden John Cox in person, by telephone (02476 76394802) or through our website www.arleycofechurches.org.uk. I hope Arley News will get to you in time to invite you to my farewell service and event on June 5th at 4pm at St. Michael's New Arley. It will be followed by refreshments in the Community Centre. You are most welcome to attend. And finally from me "THANK YOU". For me and Pauline this has been a great place to live and work and we have greatly appreciated all the friendships we have made. Keep in touch. It will be great to hear your news. My email will be [email protected] and our address 26 Hazel Grove Mapperley Nottingham NG3 6DN Prayers and best wishes to you all, Peter

UPDATE FROM ARLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

This school year has been very exciting so far at Arley Primary School. We have taken part in, and hosted, some community events as well as taking part in lots of inspiring WOW days. Autumn Term During the autumn term we hosted Macmillan Coffee Morning and Race for Life. Members of the community were invited to join us for a hot drink and some home-made cakes. Parents had been very generous and provided us with an array of delicious treats. As a school we made £321 for Macmillan Cancer Support and £340 for Cancer Research. As a school we also held a fundraising day for Children in Need. In order to raise money, children and staff came to school in their pyjamas, took part in a raffle and placed coins on a very large Pudsey bear. It was a very successful day which was enjoyed by all. We raised a grand total of £472.20. Spring Term So far this term children have had the opportunity to take part in inspiring WOW days linked to their topic. Years 1 and 2 had a Victorian Day at school during which they dressed up, played Victorian games and created an authentic Victorian classroom. Years 3 and 4 went to Bosworth to introduce them to their topic ‘The Struggle for Power’. They took part in three activities during the day which were the interactive exhibition of the battle of Bosworth, a demonstration and talk from a ‘Tudor archer’ and finally a guided walk to see where the battle took place. Years 5 and 6 went on a trip down to Portsmouth to have a guided tour of the H.M.S Victory and take part in a workshop where they imagined they were explorers bringing back items from new countries to Queen Elizabeth 1st. Summer Term This term started off with our WOW days. Years 3 and 4 had a day of making and baking and Years 5 and 6 had a day of sewing and tie-dying. Years 1 and 2 have a trip planned to the Snow Dome for after half term! Reception went on an exciting trip to Ash End House Farm where they met lots of lovely animals. During this half term it has been the Queen’s 90th birthday and the school went all out to celebrate! We spent the week making decorations for the hall and learning all about the Royal Family. We even wrote letters to the Queen and sent her birthday cards. On her actual birthday we had an afternoon tea party for the whole school and we all sang the national anthem!

SUMMER ADVICE The joys of summer have arrived - BBQs, paddling in the sea, long walks and, glorious holidays. But for the 15 million people in the UK who suffer with hay fever, the change of season can bring with it sneezing, runny noses and itchy eyes. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen – of which there are several types. The majority of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen and tend to start experiencing symptoms from May until July or August. For those with allergies to tree pollen, their onset of symptoms will depend on which type they’re allergic to and when the tree produces pollen. As a community pharmacist, I’m always delighted to quash the myth that you have to “put up with hay fever”. For some people, symptoms can be mild and there’s no need for medication. But for others, hay fever can cause discomfort, lack of concentration and irritability. I’ve helped a lot of sufferers to get their symptoms under control. The first step is usually getting to grips with the wide range of treatments that are available. Whether you are purchasing a medicine from your pharmacy or whether you have been prescribed one by your GP, you can get advice from your pharmacist about your medicines. If a person comes into my pharmacy for a hay fever treatment, I like to ask them about their symptoms and how severe they are. If they only get hay fever symptoms now and again and the symptoms are confined to the nasal area, a nasal spray can be effective. People have to be cautious however when using a decongestant nasal spray as regular use can actually make you have a blocked nose. If a person has more symptoms, like sneezing accompanied with a runny nose, antihistamine tablets can be effective. These however are less effective at relieving a blocked nose. For those who suffer with itchy or sore eyes, eye drops can help. If over the counter treatments don’t give you sufficient relief or your symptoms are particularly severe, I will be able to tell you if you should see your GP. There are also simple things you can do to help keep your hay fever at bay. Most weather reports include information about pollen counts – if they are high, try to stay indoors as much as possible. If you do want to venture out, wear sunglasses and keep your car windows closed when driving. It can also help to shower and change your clothes after you’ve been outside. Warwickshire Search and Rescue Warwickshire Search and Rescue Team is a Lowland Rescue team, set up to assist the Police with searches for vulnerable missing persons within Warwickshire and beyond. Our team is part of a much bigger family of 36 Lowland Rescue teams in the UK. We work directly for the police force of Warwickshire, providing valuable search management services and physical resources to search on land and inland waterways. We are usually called out by Police Search Advisors, but this can vary between police forces. It is important to mention that we cannot be called out by members of the public, only by government agencies. We often get called out by neighbouring Lowland Rescue teams such as West Midlands, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire to assist them in police searches within their areas. Most of our work involves locating high risk missing people, those most at risk of injury or loss of life, either through their own actions, their environment, or due to illness or injury. However, Lowland Rescue teams can be called upon for other tasks, such as helping people in flooded areas. All team members are unpaid volunteers from all walks of life, from 18 to 80 years old. We are available to respond to callouts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. As well as search management personnel, team leaders and search technicians, Warwickshire Search and Rescue also has a search dog team and a specialist kayak team. To learn more about the roles within our team, or to find out how to join the team, please visit our website (see below). We are a registered charity, and when we’re not out searching or training, we are often at various locations in Warwickshire, raising much needed funds for equipment for the team, things such as first aid kits and vital software. However, we really appreciate support from local companies too. If you would like to help us save the lives of others, please visit our website www.warksar.org.uk or Contact us: [email protected] or phone 01926-530-858 and leave a message.

A JUNIOR FOOTBALL TEAM HAS BEEN FORCED TO FIND

ALTERNATIVE PLAYING FACILITIES AFTER A LARGE RENT INCREASE.

This was the headlines recently in the Nuneaton News setting out how a Junior Football Club who uses the Hilltop facility had issues with an increase of £125.00 requested by Arley Parish Council for the uses of the facility in 2017.

Jeff Abram, vice chairman at Haunchwood Sports JFC, said: "We're very frustrated by the decision, things have been ropey all year but we officially found out a couple of weeks ago. I questioned Arley Parish Council on what we were going to receive in addition to the rent increase and they said that they would discuss this at their next meeting.

"They then came back to me and confirmed that we would get no additional support or facilities for the rent increase – we're absolutely gutted. We've been here for three years and it was originally free for us, then it moved to £125 per team.

"To carry on playing at Hilltop, we would have to pay £250 per team from next season. We currently have two teams playing up there, U10s and U8s, as well as a tots session every Saturday, and our U7s and U11s sides were due to start in September.

"The only other team that uses the field is a men's 11-a-side from Arley, so if we aren't playing there, they will hardly make any money. The most frustrating part is that they're stopping children from playing football". "We're looking at different venues to use at the moment and how we can make the club grow," said Jeff.

“The team is currently seeking alternative facilities, and gaining support from the community” Jeff stated, "There's also the Leys Millionaires £1million grant for Ansley Village, New Arley and OId Arley, but because of where we're based we can't access any funding.", “Arley Sports Centre is under a different borough council but they also have playing fields next to the centre so it could affect football teams there," added Mr Abram.

"If you take away the facilities for children to play football, it could cause all sorts of problems, such as anti-social behavior."

The News contacted Arley Parish Council for comment but did not receive a reply before going to print.

In response the Arley Parish Council issued the following statement

Arley Parish Council own and Maintain Hill Top Recreation Ground on behalf of the Parishioners of Arley. The Parish Council maintain the grounds predominantly for the use of Arley Parishioners to partake in outdoor recreational activities, not just for Football Pitch Hire. The expense for this provision is obtained via the Parish Council Precept levied solely on Arley Parishioners via their Council Tax Bills. Arley Parish Council expends over £2000 per annum of Arley Parishioners Council Tax to ensure the field is mown and bins are provided for litter and dog mess. Arley Parish Council has also recently contributed to CCTV provision replaced the access gates, bins and signage at the field at considerable cost in an attempt to reduce antisocial behaviour, which has included vandalism, nuisance motorcycle use damaging the pitches and dog fouling. Arley Parish Council has recently reviewed its fees as part of its budgeting and precepting process .It decided to equalise the fees charged to all teams as a matter of fairness and to enable the Parish Council to, what it thinks, obtain a fair fee to contribute towards the upkeep of the field. This still equates to less than 40p per week per team member for all year round usage, for the 30 juniors Haunchwood FC coach at Hill Top Recreation Ground. Arley Parish Council would like to reiterate it has no way asked the teams to vacate the pitches and find alternative provision; the pitches are still available for them to hire. In respect of Mr Abram's comment "things have been ropey all year" Arley Parish Council investigated with both Haunchwood FC and other hirers the possibility of improving both the condition of the pitches and the provision of other on site facilities. Unfortunately Arley Parish Council decided against progressing this option due to the substantial increase in running cost which it believed would not generate increased pitch hire to cover, which Arley Parish Council would then need cover. In respect of The Leys Millionaires Big Local Funding, currently three members of Arley Parish Council sit in a personal capacity on the Big Local management committee and are involved in other groups operating within Arley as you would expect community minded individuals to do. Those councillors do not represent Arley Parish Council on that organisation in any respect. The field was originally gifted to the People of Arley for recreational purposes and will remain that way in perpetuity. Yours sincerely Arley Parish Council. Attachments area G Brough Clerk

WWHHAATT IISS MMOODDEELL FFLLYYIINNGG AAIIRRCCRRAAFFTT AALLLL AABBOOUUTT?? The background to the Big Local Leys millionaires Festival of flight June 12th The making and working of small aircraft started in the 19th century with rubber band powered type of craft. Mainly done in this Country but experiments were taking place in many countries. Some tried steam propulsion but the limited power output and great weight made things very difficult. The American Wright brothers, using their engineering skills as cycle builders were the first to achieve sustained flight with their glider models. Eventually they achieve the world’s first engine powered flight in 1903. A lot of their success was down to the work they did with small scale models. Actual model aircraft flying in this country got under way in the early 1900 with rubber powered models. Several Companies offered either build it yourself kits or complete ready to fly models. They would fly for around a minute and travel several hundred metres on a good day. The first engine powered models did not arrive till after World War 1. The model size engine was a heavy slow revving lump of metal and needed models of over 3 metres span to get decent flights. It was not until after the Second World War those suitable lightweight and affordable engines became available in this country. Up until approximately 1940 all models were free flying. The operator had little control over how the model would fly. The Americans came up with the idea of controlling the model by using a tether system. Eventually the U control system was adopted and is used to this day. The first events for the models were purely speed races and the Americans were using highly tuned 10cc engines that could do over 100 MPH. The sheer cost of the whole enterprise caused many to desert the speed arena and turn to aerobatics. Here the pilot and the model had to perform a series of manoeuvres such as loops, figure of eights and similar shapes and be marked for accuracy. Controline flying became a worldwide craze with clubs being formed all over the Country. Many people wanted a system where the model could duplicate the full size aircraft that is flying anywhere without being restricted by the presence of the flying lines. Experiments were going on all over the world to achieve accurate radio controlled model flight. The early days saw the equipment that was very large and heavy and not that reliable. But as time went on the transmitter got better and lighter and the on-board aircraft equipment got smaller and much better performing. The models in the meantime have gotten smaller even allowing indoor flying. In spite of the popularity of radio controlled aeroplanes in many countries control line model remained popular. The much smaller fields needed were a great benefit and provided suitable silencers were fitted allowed flying nearer habitation to occur.

Generally Control line flying requires the participant to be able to build the model either from an engineering drawing or from a kit of parts. Almost ready fly models are available but most clubs prefer the flyer to make his or hers own model. The South Birmingham Model Flying Club will be in attendance at the Leys Millionaires Big Local Festival of flight this coming June the 12th. . At the Hilltop recreation ground, they will be demonstrating what control line flying is all about. The club has commissioned four special models designed to be flown by total novices to the activity. So far a great number of people of all ages and gender have taken those first few steps to being able to fly a model on their own why not join them? We start the flying sessions on the 12th at 1.00 pm Please note the Hilltop grounds are only for control line models and kites only. No Drones or radio control models please. More memories of Arley. Daffern’s Wood, now a successful nature reserve, was in our youth, our unofficial playground. There was a stream running through where lovely watercress grew and we would take some home and eat it on our sandwiches. Depending on the current film being shown at the Grand cinema, we were either Robin Hood, or Tarzan, but Cowboys n’ Injuns was the best game. Farmer Harris who had the farm and Daffern’s Wood would appear sometimes and tell us to “get off”. Being wartime food was on rations and due to Farmer Harris kept chickens he was our egg allocator, each week it was my job to fetch the eggs from the farm house and carry them home with care. Another of our playgrounds was Bullock’s fields, this had the river Bourne flowing through there and we could paddle and play, sometimes our kid sister’s followed us and occasionally on a warm sunny day our mam would come with us along with other families. I started school at Gun Hill Infants/Junior School at four years old; I don’t have many memories of school really, except being in trouble because I would not dance when told to! Being war time I do remember the head mistress Miss Britain doing the air-raid drills though. She would bang on a dustbin lid with an old pick shaft and we would line up in our gas masks and walked over the field to the air raid shelter. We never actually went into the shelter! My sister Joyce was born at Grandma’s house in the old village and because I had measles and could not see Mam I was sent to stay with Mam’s sister Flo. I had my trike so I was ok. Then my sister Pam was born and last but not least “our Bob” was born. Being the eldest I remember often I had to look after the kids and “keep the fire in” on Saturday and Sunday nights while Mam and Dad went to Fur Tree or the Club. Sometimes it was ok but we didn’t like the time on our own, no TV for us to watch. I

did worry about looking after them as sometimes our neighbour’s daughters came round. We never went to bed until Mam came home; we stayed downstairs and napped on the chairs and settee. When we got a bit older we went to some pubs with them, with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps we were happy. Big school next: Herbert Fowler School (in use until quite recently) and at eleven our first long trousers! (The knees didn’t last long). We walked to school which was ok as we were all mates. At lunch time I went to Grandma Markham’s where the gardens of St. Wilfrid’s Cottages was near the school. At Grandma’s I had a sandwich and a cup of horrible cocoa, Grandma was alright but she always hovered over us with a dustpan and brush until I was finished. When I was older I ran home for lunch, we had time and it never seemed far, in fact it was a mile to Herbert Fowler from Hollick Crescent, by the time I started at Herbert Fowler there was a road laid, made up of ash from the pit boilers and I can remember it being “tarmacked later, before the ash road was laid you got to school by walking over the fields. I did’t have a bike before I left school, but when I did it could have been Grandad Moreton’s old bike, he could never “cock his leg over” and had to fall off it every time.

and 1970s – Part 2 A year in the life of Arley Methodist chapel was indeed a very busy one. But we had so much fun and happy times attending them. Hence the reason I chose to spend such memories with you, in the hope that they will ignite the past for some Arley News readers, and for the newcomers to Arley, give them an insight into village life in the 60’s and 70’s – which as i have mentioned before, was centred around Arley Methodist chapel for some of us children and families there. Every year the chapel hosted it’s Anniversary. I am unsure as to the exact date of this, but i believe that it was around Easter time. This was a grand event

The fantastic thing for us children attending, was that we always got to have a new outfit with shoes and tights to complete our look. It was a very special occasion – we felt really proud as we all paraded into the formal part of the chapel to take our places on the wooden platforms that had been installed at the centre and if I remember correct, to the left and the right also. If we were higher up on the platform it was even better! Weeks prior to the Anniversary we were each given either a poem to learn (a recitation it was called) or the lyrics of a song to sing. This wasn’t such a big deal though as usually this would be shared between 2, 3 or even for children. Some of us even had a poem and a song to sing. However that said, on the day itself we were very nervous prior to our names being called out when it came to our turn to deliver! Our audience included our parents as well as the regular congregation, who were very proud of us as we stood there reciting (probably in parrot fashion) what they had helped us to learn. We would leave that service feeling very proud of ourselves! I hope that you are enjoying reading my ‘chapel memories’. To be continued in your next edition of Arley News. Maria Eardley (nee Button)
