He became a pirate in 1718 and, instead of attacking treasure ships, he sailed around the Caribbean attacking local ships and stealing their cargo.

He wasn’t a very bloodthirsty pirate. Often when he captured ships he would offer to let the crew join his as pirates.
He might not have been the most ruthless pirate but he is remembered for two things.

All pirates flew pirate flags from their ships. You might recognise this flag as a pirate flag, but did you know that it actually belonged to Calico Jack and no other pirates used it?
Calico Jack’s flag became known as the Jolly Roger.

Anne Bonny became a pirate because she met and fell in love with with the pirate Calico Jack.

In 1719, Calico Jack sailed his ship to the Bahamas and met Anne Bonny. For a while they settled down together but then their money ran out.

Some pirates, like Calico Jack, had wives and children but they left them ashore because women were banned on board pirate ships.

When Calico Jack decided to leave Anne at home in the Bahamas and go back to his pirate life, Anne refused to wait there until he returned.
That didn’t stop Anne Bonny!

So, instead of waiting for him at home, she disguised herself in men’s clothes and boarded Jack’s ship as one of the crew.

In 1720 a ship was captured by Calico Jack and Anne Bonny. On board the ship was Mary Read who, like Anne, was dressed as a man.

Anne, Mary and Calico Jack led many daring raids across the Caribbean until finally the navy caught up with them and took them to prison.
