APPLICATION AND PURPOSE

Reference

Condition assessment describes the process of a qualified group of trained industryprofessionals performing an analysis of the condition of facilities to estimate the time theasset can remain in productive service. It provides a subjective estimate of existing plantcondition and the equipment fitness-for-service level.

IWK have no current formal Condition Assessment & Residual Life Assessmentprocesses or activities.

IWK RECOMMENDED PRACTICE

It is recommended that IWK do not implement CARL on am asset-wide basis. CARL is notseen to provide added value if an effective maintenance system is in place. Amaintenance strategy for IWK is included in the CAMP, Section 5.11. Implementing aCARL in addition to an effective maintenance strategy including EEL would notnecessarily provide enhanced information on the effective and residual life of an asset.

However, IWK has to make a corporate decision if CARL is seen to be valuable in thecontext their asset management system. If adopted, IWK has to formally document theirCARL procedures, acceptance criteria, etc. in a document for wider dissemination withinthe company.

If required, development of an internal IWK Training Course for personnel involved inCARL Assessments will assist in standardising decisions on plant acceptability.

IWK to decide if external expertise is required to assist in initial implementation of CARL.
