What’s more than one apple? Apples! We make things plural when we talk about more than one: sandwich – sandwiches, onion – onions, egg – eggs. However, some things stay singular. They’re called “noncount”. Here are examples of some noncount foods: Things with
Liquids Part of a whole very small parts milk meat salt
coffee cake rice soda watermelon cereal water cheese sugar ketchup bread oatmeal (grains)
Sometimes you can tell if something is count or noncount by the way it’s said – count items are “three onions” or “an apple”, while noncount items are “milk” or “fish” with no number or article.
Shopping for a Party
Luisa: What do we need for the party? Kim: Well, read the menu and I’ll write the list. Luisa: O.K. We need chicken, rice, cheese, and broccoli for the entrée. For appetizers, we’ll need tortilla chips, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and peppers. We should also have a bowl of nuts and a plate of fruit – blueberries, grapes, and cut-up watermelon and cantaloupe. Kim: What about dessert? Luisa: How about ice cream? Kim: That sounds great!
