Creative West is the latest arts project to come to west Cheltenham and is supported by local organisations who want to offer FREE exciting creative opportunities to inspire young people.
Arts and community groups from across the town have worked together to offer Easter and summer holiday activities that they hope will encourage young people to get out of the house, off the iPad, take up a new hobby, meet people and generally let their creative juices flow.
The project will take place at venues across the area so that all young people can get involved. The key locations will be The Rock, Springfield Park, Oasis, Hesters Way Community Centre and KGV.
Funds raised for the project will pay for FREE activities including; junk percussion sculpture, circus skills, street dance, samba drumming, animation and visual arts. For what’s on at Easter see the table below.

Cheltenham Animal Shelter Providing loving care for homeless animals
The Gloucestershire Animal Welfare Association and Cheltenham Animal Shelter (known as CAS for short) has been helping animals in need since 1926, when two ladies started taking in stray cats. With the support of the local community, the Shelter grew and in 1940 moved to the current site on Gardners Lane, off Swindon Road.
We rescue and rehome around 600 unwanted surrendered and abandoned cats, dogs and small animals every year. Our team and volunteers give ongoing love and care to homeless pets, supplying medical treatment when needed and behavioural training to help improve a pet’s chance of finding a new family.
We believe in the importance of animal education, so we spend time in our local community or invite groups into the Shelter for talks and tours. We offer education programmes on animal welfare, attended by many local children and our specialist HALT Project (Humans and Animals Learning
Together) helps children who are facing challenges and lack confidence.
The care we provide costs more than £750,000 a year and as we don’t receive any government funding, we are always grateful for donations. We also gratefully receive unwanted bedding and unopened pet food.
Did you know?
Alongside the rehoming shelter, we also have an onsite vet, CASVet, that provides quality care at a lower cost and further concessions for pensioners and people on income support. Half of any profit funds the work of CAS, so you will get great care for your pets while supporting us.
Our grooming salon, Short Bark & Sides offers pampering for mucky mutts at competitive prices. We offer a 10% discount for former CAS dogs and all profits support the charity. We also offer cat and dog boarding and doggy day care for while you are at work.
If you haven’t yet visited our onsite charity shop, it’s worth a visit and stocked with bargains! The shop is open six days a week from 9am – 4.30pm and 12 – 4.30pm on Saturdays.
If you’d like to find out more about CAS and pets seeking loving homes, please visit www.gawa.org.uk, follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or call 01242 523521.

Lilian Faithfull Care opens
DEMENTIA MEETING CENTRE Lilian Faithfull Care are opening their doors to support people newly diagnosed with Dementia in Gloucestershire. The first of this kind in the county and forms part of the ‘Meeting Centres UK Support Programme.’ Lilian Faithfull Care, with specialist knowledge of Dementia, are inviting people to the new meeting centre with their loved ones weekly on Wednesdays. Based in their Royal Gardens Community Hub, next to their Royal Court care home on Fiddlers Green Lane in Cheltenham. Lilian Faithfull Care’s trained Dementia team will provide a safe environment for people to spend the day. The visits will be flexible and equip people with useful information i.e. provide support with practical, emotional and social challenges, give one-to-one guidance and allow people to form new friendships for extra support. There will be various activities designed to help adapt to the new daily challenges people encounter as well as being active and creative. Such as gardening, art, games, history, walking, dancing and outings. Georgina Kirby, Care Support Worker says, ‘We recognise the affect being told you have dementia has on people and their loved ones, and we are here to help.’ Yvonne Kelly-Fox, Dementia Link Care Support Worker says, ‘We welcome people to get in touch so we can support them through this journey and build their confidence out within the community.’ Evidence shows people that attend experience better self-esteem, greater feeling of happiness and sense of belonging than those who don’t. Those who attended more regularly showed fewer of the more distressing symptoms of dementia. Family carers also experience less burden and feel better able to cope. Martin Hughes, CEO of Lilian Faithfull Care says, ‘In Gloucestershire there is an estimated 8,610 people living with dementia and it is expected to double over the next 20 years. We remain true to our Founder, Lilian Faithfull’s principles, “a desire to improve the lives of others through care and dedication,” by helping people to live well with dementia in our county.’ Open weekly every Wednesday between 10.00am and 3.30pm, people can attend for as many weeks as they need, the expert team will be there with a friendly welcome and a helping hand.

(Nearly) 5 things you didn’t know about Cheltenham’s newest parkrun Cheltenham has a new parkrun and it’s on your doorstep! Every Saturday at 9am, a group of people turn up at King George V playing field, near the Saracens club house. Cheltenham has had a parkrun at Pittville for a number of years, but a small group worked with the Council and Cheltenham Borough Homes to secure funding and the event started in September. We’d love to have you along but, in case you’re unsure about what it’s all about, here are some key facts about parkrun: It’s free. And we really mean free. Every week, people show up and enjoy themselves without paying anything! It’s not about running. Every week someone volunteers to tail walk the event. So nobody comes last. If you want to run super fast, then you can. If you want to

have a walk, then that is also great. If you don’t fancy running at all, then you can always come along and volunteer or even just support. Everyone is welcome and it’s a great way to meet new people. We ask that you register first. You only need to so this once. Do this online (www.parkrun.com) and print out your own barcode, but that is quick and easy to do. If you don’t have access to the internet or a printer, come and talk to the Run Director one Saturday and we’ll be able work something out for the next week. It is 5km. The event itself is over 5km comprising of 3 laps of the playing field. That may sound a lot, but doing it with other people where everyone supports each other, make it far easier. And you can always start and see how it goes. It’s for the whole family. We love to see whole families coming down and taking part. We ask that under 11’s stay with an adult, but parkrun is for everyone who wants to give 5km a go on a Saturday morning. CAKE! Every week, the wonderful Sally from the Saracens rugby club makes a fabulous array of cakes. The Sarries don’t stop there as they put on bacon butties and hot drinks as well. It’s every parkrunners top secret – they do it for the cake! If you’re still unsure then either pop down one Saturday morning and have a chat about it. Alternatively, you can check our website www.parkrun.org.uk/kinggeorgevplayingfield/ or email [email protected].
We’d love to see more new faces on Saturday morning!
All Saints’ Academy students put
on a Practically Perfect Show!
To kick start 2020 the students from All Saints’ Academy were successful in wowing audiences with their more than ‘Practically Perfect’ whole academy production of Walt Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins Jr’. The corridors were filled with familiar songs bringing a real sense of nostalgia and community to the Performing Arts Faculty. A whopping number of 100 students including cast and crew showcased
their professionalism, determination and confidence with four spectacular performances of the show.
What made this one really special was how many KS3 students joined the cast and we must say a special congratulations to the many Year 7 students that joined and were really brave auditioning this time.
This year, the talent from the auditions overwhelmed us so we had two different casts as they were all too hard to choose from in the end. Year 10 student Logan made his debut performance as a lead role on the ASA stage
as loveable but troubled George Banks. Our younger students Amelia P and Alfey K took on the huge responsibility of the iconic and cheeky children Michael and Jane Banks along with Lucy W and Charlie S in Year 8 showing us that our KS3 students are more than capable of stepping up to forefront of stage from a young age.
Our lead cast consisted of
18
Sixth Form Music and Drama students Reece A Chantae S, Oliver R, Jose L, Mitra H, Natalie H, Hannah A and Harvey W along with Year 11 students Ellie S and Katie S. Audiences exclaimed that our very own Mary Poppins was “better than Dame Julie Andrews herself!” and that is down to the sweet harmonies and enchanting tones of talented Sixth Form student Shana K.
It was another iconic, ambitious but memorable production from our students that continue to take such pride in the Performing Arts. We performed to a jam-packed audience every single evening which just reflects the kind support of our surrounding community and the following that Cheltenham now has when it comes to hearing about an All Saints’ Academy show. There was laughter, there were tears of joy, reminiscence and pride and audiences were blown away by Mary, her magic umbrella, the charismatic Chimney Sweeps that taught us all how to ‘Step in Time’, the enchanting characters and the entire cast, crew and company. All Saints’ Academy’s ‘Mary Poppins Jr’ was ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ in every way! Bravo!

Children’s Welfare
Few things can be as sensitive or as difficult to overcome as a dispute involving your children. As a parent, you’ll be looking for solutions that are right for your children and you’ll always want to put their welfare first. But when emotions are running high during times of stress and upheaval, it can often be really hard to be objective and make the right decisions.
Putting Your Children First
At DS Legal, our expert family lawyers will provide you with sensitive and practical advice at this difficult time. Our aim is to put everything back into focus for you. Once clarity has been restored, we will work with you to find the right solution for your children.
We will help you to ensure that your children are properly provided for, enjoy the living arrangements that best suit them and have the right amount of contact with both parents in the future. Our experienced legal team also works with a range of advisors who can give additional assistance along the way too, such as counsellors, children experts and financial advisers. In the first instance we will always look for a settlement reached by agreement where possible, but if all else has failed we will apply to court for the appropriate orders.
There are some occasions when a child’s safety is in issue and emergency court orders are needed. Our highly experienced team of family lawyers can all make emergency applications to court, the same day if necessary, to ensure your child’s safety is legally protected.
Can we help you?
If you would like to get in touch with us to find out how we can help you, please call Mark or alternatively, please email us at [email protected]. We work in the strictest confidence and we are here to help you.

CYBER HUB CONSULTATION
In January Cheltenham Borough Council and partners unveiled the Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) which describes strategic proposals for the new Cyber Hub and Garden Village development on farmland to the west of Springbank and Fiddlers Green.
Consultation events were held between 13th January and 17th February offering the public an opportunity for comment. These comments are now being reviewed and the SPD masterplan will then be updated and presented to both Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Councils. If approved the SPD will help shape future planning applications for developments on the cyber site and be an important guide when Council planning committees make planning decisions. Over 50 specific comments were made to the dedicated website and are still available to view here; cybercentral.commonplace.is/overview The Hesters Way Forum (HWF) having already produced its own masterplan has studied the SPD and was generally encouraged that the aspirations for sustainable design, walking, cycling and public transport were creditable.
However, local opinion as expressed at the group, is concerned in relation to how well the new development will integrate with the existing community. Concerns have been raised on several counts, the first of which relates to the provision of a buffer zone which would provide an accessible and attractively landscaped park between Fiddlers Green Lane and the development. This feature, if implemented, would prevent the cyber hub office blocks from overlooking the current residential area and also provide a superb green facility for health and leisure pursuits currently lacking in the vicinity.
Another key worry for the local community and for Cheltenham as a whole is the additional traffic and associated pollution that the provision of 7,000 jobs and up to 3,000 houses will generate. Although new road improvements around the A40 and GCHQ are due in the coming months the future redevelopment of the M5 junction 10 is still undecided and it is arguably this project which will have most impact on local traffic.
However, the only effective means by which to address the traffic issue is through “modal shift” as described in the SPD. In lay terms this means large numbers of people getting out of their cars and walking, cycling or using public transport. This would be a fundamental change in the way most people travel.
Can a planning document change the way people behave? It’s a long shot but unless infrastructure is provided with an emphasis on people and health and not the private vehicle then the traffic issue will only escalate. The recent announcement of the Local Transport Plan by the County Council is very significant in this respect. If approved it will offer a framework for county wide improvements for active travel and could be a catalyst for the sort of change that will be needed to make the Cyber Hub a success for everyone.
The Borough Council have scheduled discussion and potential approval of the SPD in April 2020. To keep up to date with Cyber Hub issues and to have your say in what goes on locally join the Hesters Way Forum. You can contact the Hesters Way Forum via email or visit the website

ART at Springbank with Graham Art with Graham started at Springbank Community Centre over 11 years ago as a session funded by the 2gether Trust. The aim of the project was as therapy for people from all backgrounds who were struggling with the ups and downs of daily life.
Unfortunately after 18 months the funding was lost but local artist Graham Brindley decided to continue it himself, with the support of the Hesters Way Neighbourhood Project who continue to provide the community hall free of charge.
Graham is a very talented artist with a knack for sharing his skills with all comers, whether experienced artists, or novices who just love to paint. Graham is also willing to help any students that may need assistance for school projects.
One of Graham’s works is displayed in Cheltenham Art Gallery and is named the ‘Bird Lady’ which is a portrait of a lady that used to feed the pigeons on Cheltenham Promenade many years ago.
All are welcome to attend Graham’s sessions on Mondays & Fridays 10am-12pm no matter the age or artistic skill level. Standard brushes, paints and canvases are all provided FREE but Graham can provide special equipment at an added cost.
