I use Coats and Clark 30 and 35 weight cotton thread. It's labeled as MercerizedELS Cotton for Machine Quilting & Crafts; Machine Quilting; or All Purpose. I findCoats and Clark cotton thread at JoAnn's. I've also used Madeira Cotona, which is a30 weight cotton thread.

I use the 30 - 35 weight cotton thread both in the bobbin (I wind my own bobbins)and in the top (needle).

A note about water-soluble stabilizers and needles:

There are many, many different brands of water-soluble stabilizer available. Someare thin and light, some are fibrous, and some are thick and heavy. It can beconfusing to pick the right one for your lace project.

We've digitized and stitched thousands of freestanding lace designs, and haveconsistently excellent results with Sulky Ultra Solvy (the heavy weight water-solublestabilizer by Sulky) and Vilene, a fibrous water-soluble stabilizer. We order Vilenefrom www.pointetopointe.com.

Use a sharp needle (as opposed to an embroidery needle) when embroidering ontowater-soluble stabilizer - especially if using the "plastic-looking" kind (such as SulkyUltra Solvy). An embroidery needle has a larger point, which makes larger holes inthe water-soluble stabilizer, leading to tearing and misalignment.

For each design, hoop onepiece of water-solublestabilizer (WSS). We usedSulky Ultra Solvy.

Kenny tested different brandsof WSS to see which worksbest. Click here to see howdifferent brands hold up whenused to sew freestanding lace.

We embroidered eightreindeer (sewing a mix of thethree, 3-piece reindeer designs inthe pack), the 3-piece Santadesign, and the 4-pieceSleigh design.

Because freestanding lace istwo-sided, the bobbin threadshould match the top threadfor each design.

Wind a bobbin with the samethread that you'll be using inthe needle for each design.

Attach the hoop to themachine, load the design, and embroider the design.

Note: We recommend a size11 sharp needle whenembroidering freestandinglace.

After each design has beenembroidered, unhoop theWSS and cut away theexcess.

Trim as close to theembroidery as possiblewithout cutting any of thestitches.

Soak all of the designs in acontainer of hot tap water.

If you are using Sulky UltraSolvy, soak for 15 minutes. For other brands of WSS,follow the manufacturer'sinstructions.

    Blot the lace with papertowels.
