10. USE PROPER AIR HOSE for thetool. Make sure your air hose is ingood condition and is long enough toreach your work without stretching.

11. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. DONOT wear loose clothing, gloves,neckties, rings, bracelets, or otherjewelry which may get caught inmoving parts. Non-slip footwear isrecommended. Wear a protectivehair covering to contain long hair.

12. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES.Also use a face or dust mask if cut-ting operation is dusty. Everydayeyeglasses only have impact resis-tant lenses, they are NOT safetyglasses.

13. WEAR APPROVED HEARINGPROTECTION.

14. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or avise to hold work when practical. It issafer than using your hand and freesboth hands to operate tool.

15. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep prop-er footing and balance at all times.

16. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE.Keep tools lubricated and clean forbest and safest performance. Followinstructions for lubricating andchanging accessories.

9. MAKE SURE TO ADD OIL! Usecompressor oil or a non-detergent 30weight oil.

10. NEVER LEAVE COMPRESSORTURNED ON WHEN NO ONE ISAROUND! A leak could develop caus-ing compressor to run continuouslycausing overheating and possibly afire.

11. NEVER AIM THE AIR NOZZLEDIRECTLY AT YOURSELF OR OTH-ERS. Pressurized air can break orbruise the skin.

12. NEVER LOAD YOUR COMPRES-SOR PAST THE MAXIMUM PSIRATING OF 115 PSI.

Operating this compressor can pro-pel objects into the air, causingimmediate eye damage. To protectyourself, always wear AmericanNational Standards Institute (ANSI)approved safety glasses or goggleswhen operating this equipment.

The Model H4519 features a powerful220V 3 HP motor, two cylinder aluminumpump with cast iron cylinder liners, anincredible 10.9 CFM@ 40 PSI, 9.1 CFM@90 PSI, 11 gallon welded steel tank, anda 115 PSI maximum working pressure.The Model H4519 compressor fills its 11gallon tank from 0 to 115 PSI in a little overa minute!

We are pleased to provide this manualwith the Model H4519. It was written toencourage safety considerations andguide you through general operating pro-cedures and maintenance. This manualrepresents our effort to produce the bestdocumentation possible.

The specifications, details, and pho-tographs in this manual represent theModel H4519 as supplied when the manu-al was prepared. However, owing toGrizzly’s policy of continuous improve-ment, changes may be made at any timewith no obligation on the part of Grizzly.

Commentary

H4519 3 HP Air Compressor -5-

The Model H4519 represents a heavyload at 142 pounds. Seek assistancebefore moving.

This air compressor is shipped from themanufacturer in a carefully packed carton.If you discover the machine is damagedafter you have signed for delivery, and thetruck and driver are gone, you will need tofile a freight claim with the carrier. Save thecontainers and all packing materials forpossible inspection by the carrier or itsagent. Without the packing materials, filinga freight claim can be difficult. If you needassistance determining whether you needto file a freight claim, or with the procedureto file one, please contact our CustomerService at (570) 546-9663.

When determining where to set up thecompressor in the shop, or when taking theair compressor to a job site, the mostimportant consideration is access to anadequate and properly fused power sup-ply. Refer to Circuit Requirements for theneeds of your particular compressor.

Also, make sure the compressor is notoperating in an environment where thereare any explosive, flammable or causticfumes or gases. A clear and well ventilatedarea is best for its safe operation.

Place the compressor on a solid and levelsurface. Make sure that the hoses youattach to your pneumatic device will beunrestricted in movement and not subjectto being run over by vehicles or puncturedby any sharp objects in the area.

Since air compressors are often used for asustained period of time, sometimes inrestricted areas, it is also best to wear earprotection to avoid long term exposure tothe sound of the electric motor and com-pression pump.

Long term exposure to this machinemay cause hearing loss. Wearapproved hearing protection whileoperating this machine to minimizethis risk!

Unpacking Site Placement

Do not place the compressor next toany flammable liquids or gas! Thecompressor cylinder head and feedpipe can reach high temperatures andcould cause the flammable gas toignite. Keep work area clear fromflammable gas when using the com-pressor.


CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

Wiring:The Model H4519 3 HP Air Compressor iswired for 220V operation.

Circuit Breaker RequirementsInstall your air compressor on a dedicatedcircuit to reduce the possibility of overload-ing the circuit and tripping the circuit break-er. However, if an unusual load does notexist, and the circuit breaker still trips, havethe circuit inspected by a qualified electri-cian. Never use a larger circuit breakerthan stated below, or you will increase therisk of fire.

Extension Cords

In the event of an electrical short, ground-ing reduces the risk of electric shock byproviding a path of least resistance to dis-perse electric current. These machines areequipped with power cords having anequipment-grounding conductor. SeeFigure 1. The outlet must be properlyinstalled and grounded in accordance withall local codes and ordinances.

If you find it necessary to use an extensioncord with your compressor, make sure thecord is rated Standard Service (grade S) orbetter. The extension cord must also con-tain a ground wire and plug pin. Alwaysrepair or replace extension cords whenthey become worn or damaged.

Overheating, short circuit and firedamage will result form inadequatewiring. Follow the guidelines in thissection.

Potential for electrical shock haz-ard, this equipment must begrounded. Verify that any existingelectrical outlet and circuit youuse is actually grounded.


PREPARING FOR USE

Before using your Grizzly AirCompressor, follow these steps:

1. Remove all packing materials and anyprotective plastic bags, zip-tie labelsor tags from the compressor cylinderhead or oil plug.

2. Be sure the air filter is attached to thecylinder head.

4. Make sure the drain valve under theair tank is closed.

3. ADD OIL TO THE CRANKCASE. Oilhas NOT been supplied with your aircompressor. The oil level should be inthe center of the sight gauge shown inFigure 2. Use compressor oil or non-detergent 30 WT oil.

NOTICE The machine should never be runwithout a full oil reservoir. The oilprovides lubrication to the cylinderrings which deliver the compressedair. Severe damage to the internalmoving parts can occur if there isnot adequate oil flow. Check the oillevel frequently, and change the oilon a regular schedule.

Duty Cycle

The Model H4519 3 HP Air Compressorshould not be operated on more than a50% duty cycle. This means an air com-pressor that pumps air for over 30 minutesin one hour is considered misuse. Thiscould mean that the air compressor isundersized for the required air demand.The maximum compressor pump time perhour is 30 minutes.

Always be aware of the duty cycle foryour air compressor. Failure to oper-ate the air compressor properlycould result in overheating andmotor seizure. There could also berisk of fire hazard due to overheat-ing. Be sure to use a compressorcapable of handling the air demand.


STARTING

To start the air compressor:

1. Make sure the compressor switch isin the OFF position (knob with redcap above pressure gauges shownin Figure 3 pressed down) beforeconnecting the power supply.

Check the pressure gauge to see that thetank pressure climbs to approximately 100-115 PSI or around 8 BAR, then automati-cally turns off.

Note—If the compressor does not auto-matically kick off, flip the ON/OFF switch toOFF before pressure gets too high. Seethe Pressure Regulator sub-section.

Operating this equipment has thepotential for flying debris to causeeye injury. Always wear safety glass-es or goggles when operating equip-ment. Everyday glasses or readingglasses only have impact resistantlenses, they are not safety glasses.Be certain the safety glasses youwear meet the appropriate standardsof the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI).

2. Close the drain valve, shown inFigure 4, so the tank can build uppressure.

3. Double check the oil level to makesure it is at the proper height.

4. Connect the compressor to thepower supply.

5. Pull the switch up to the ON positionto start compressor.

To control the air delivery to your tool:

1. Adjust the air control knob, shown inFigure 6, to set the PSI that will bedelivered to your tool. Turn the knobclockwise to increase the pressureand counter-clockwise to decreasethe pressure.

The tank pressure is displayed on the leftpressure gauge, and the air to be deliveredto the tool is displayed on the right pres-sure gauge shown in Figure 5.

There are two ways to release air from thecompressor tank other than through yourregulator and the use of air tools:

—The drain valve.—The safety drain valve.

To release air by using the drain valve,simply turn the release nut to allow air toflow out of the tank. The drain valve isshown in Figure 5. The drain valve is alsoused to drain condensation that builds upin the tank.

The safety valve automatically releasespressure if the tank reaches 130 PSI.

To manually release the air in the tankby using the safety drain valve:

1. Locate the safety drain valve on thetank. The drain valve is shown belowin Figure 7.

2. Pull the metal ring on top of the safe-ty valve to bleed pressure from thetank. Note—The ring is preset torelease air if the tank exceeds itsmaximum pressure of 130 PSI. DONOT try to adjust the safety valve!

Note—The air tool that you attach to the aircompressor should have a preferred PSIoperating level. Set the pressure to bedelivered to the tool according to this pre-ferred level. Understand the duty cycleof the air compressor that is describedon page 7.


The pressure regulator has been factoryset for the highest quality operating perfor-mance.

The pressure regulator adjusts the desiredPSI range where the air compressor kicksin and out to keep the tank pressurized forthe best operating performance.

To adjust the pressure regulator:

1. Unplug the air compressor fromthe power supply.

2. Make sure the compressor switch is inthe OFF position.

3. Drain the pressure from the tank.

4. Remove the black ON/OFF switchcover by removing the screw which isin the recess on the top of the cover.Pull the black cover up and set itaside.

5. Turn the pressure adjustment bolt(Figure 8) a half turn clockwise toincrease the tank pressure and a halfturn counter-clockwise to decreasethe pressure.

6. Connect the compressor to the powersupply and start the compressor.

7. If the PSI level still needs adjustmentrepeat steps 1 through 6.

8. Replace the cover when the properadjustments have been made.

NOTICE The Model H4519 3 HP AirCompressors have been factory setto kick off at the proper PSI range.Only attempt to adjust the pressureregulator if your air compressordoes not reach or pressurizesbeyond the proper PSI level.


To connect air tools to your air com-pressor:

1. Make sure the compressor model youuse has a sufficient cubic feet perminute (CFM) output for the air toolyou plan to connect. (Most air toolswill have an air requirement stated interms of a specific CFM at a specificpressure.)

2. The compressor should put out ahigher CFM than the tool requires.

—If you are connecting multiple toolsthat will be used simultaneously, thenthe CFM for each tool should beadded together and compared to thecompressor output value.

Consideration should also be given to thetype of usage. A nailer or staple gun usesair in short bursts and it is easier for thecompressor to maintain pressure. A paintsprayer or grinder tends to use a morecontinuous stream of air as these tools arerun for longer time periods. It is alwaysbetter to oversize a compressor to allowfor variation in the type of usage and thenumber of tools to be powered. Air toolsbeing operated with insufficient air volumewill not perform their function satisfactorily.

3. Connect the tool, using a good qualityair line with an adequate length toreach from the compressor to thepoint of use.

Note—Quick-connect couplers, shown inFigure 9, are a good option for fast andsure connection of tools and air hoses.This accessory and many like it can befound in the Grizzly Catalog.

CONNECTING TOOLS

Always disconnect air hose fromtools whenever not in use or whileservicing! During maintenance, atool connected to air may operateaccidentally, causing serious per-sonal injury!

Make certain the air hose will not be placedin a position where it can become con-stricted or cut by a sharp object. Note—Running over a hose with heavy vehiclesmay not cause an immediate leak, but itwill shorten the life of the hose.

The Model H4519 3 HP AirCompressors are specificallydesigned for air tool operation. DONOT MODIFY OR USE THISMACHINE FOR ANY OTHER PUR-POSE. Modifications or improperuse of this tool will void the warran-ty. If you are confused about anyaspect of this machine, DO NOT useit until you have answered all yourquestions. Serious personal injurymay occur.


3. Clean off cylinder head cooling fins ofany dirt which might hamper air flow.

4. Check for worn or damaged cordsand plugs.

5. Check the air pressure in the tireswhen transporting the air compressor.

6. Check for any other condition thatcould hamper the safe operation ofthis machine.

MAINTENANCE

Before Each Use

Regular periodic maintenance on your AirCompressor will ensure its optimum perfor-mance. Make a habit of inspecting the fol-lowing items before each time you use theair compressor.

Check the following items:

1. Check Oil Level! Use the sight gaugeon the bottom of the crankcase tomake sure the oil level is at the prop-er height.

2. Drain the tanks of any condensationby opening the drain valve on the bot-tom of the tank. Note—Dependingupon the amount of use and theweather conditions, a certain amountof condensed water may be released.For longevity of the compressor sealsand the air tools you connect, it is bestto keep the tanks free of water. Thetanks are best drained if the drainvalve is open when the system ispressurized. Once water has stoppedcoming out, you can close the drainvalve.

Always wear safety glasses and useextreme caution when workingaround compressed air. The force ofthe air stream can cause small bitsof debris to become airborne andcause potential injury to the eyes orother parts of the body.


Changing V-belt

Make sure the V-belt is properly ten-sioned. If the V-belt is too tight, themotor could overheat and causemachine damage or fire. If the V-beltis too loose, the belt will slip on thepulley and cause belt damage andcompressor inefficiency.

To change the V-belt drive on your aircompressor:

1. Remove the belt guard from the aircompressor shown in Figure 11. Theguard is attached to the compressorframe by the two mounting boltsshown in Figure 11.

2. Loosen the four nuts (one side shownin Figure 12) that secure the motor tothe compressor frame so the motorcan slide towards crankcase, relievingthe tension on the V-belt.

3. Remove the V-belt from the motor pul-ley and fly pulley.

4. Install the new V-belt.

5. Reposition the motor in its originalplace so the belt is tensioned, andsecure the four mounting bolts loos-ened in step 2.

6. A properly tensioned V-belt will haveabout a 1⁄2 inch deflection as shown inFigure 13.

7. Replace belt guard.

If the compressor is used on a dailybasis, perform the following checkseach week:

• Rinse the air filter foam element inwater.

• Check for loose bolts or fittings.

Weekly

Like all power tools, there is danger

associated with operating this

equipment. Accidents are frequently

caused by lack of familiarity or fail-

ure to pay attention. Use this tool

with respect and caution to lessen

the possibility of operator injury. If

normal safety precautions are over-

looked or ignored, serious personal

injury many occur.

After First 50 Hours Of Use

After the first 50 working hours or 30days, whichever comes first, performthe following maintenance:

• Replace the oil in the motor with com-pressor oil (use ISO 100 of SAE 30Wviscosity, non detergent type).

• Make sure that all the fittings are tight.

• Remove the air filter foam elementand rinse it out with water. Allow it todry and re-install.

• Blow out any accumulated dirtbetween the cylinder cooling fins.

After every 300 hours or 3 months ofregular operation, perform the followingmaintenance items:

• Change the compressor motor oil.Use compressor oil or a non-deter-gent 30 weight oil.

• Rinse the air filter foam element inwater.

• Check for air leaks and correct asneeded.

• Clean the cylinder head fins for prop-er cooling.

• Check for loose bolts or fittings.

When storing your air compressor fol-low these guidelines:

1. Set the ON/OFF button to OFF.

2. Turn the regulator counter-clockwiseto set the delivery pressure to zero.

3. Disconnect air tools or accessories.

4. Pull the safety drain valve ring tobleed excess pressure from tank. Thepressure gauge for the tank shouldread 15-20 PSI.

5. Drain water from the tank by openingthe drain valve on the bottom of thetank.

6. Close the drain valve when all thewater has been released.

7. Store the air compressor in its normaloperating position in a cool protectedarea.

Every 300 Hours Storage

Like all power tools, there is danger

associated with operating this

equipment. Accidents are frequently

caused by lack of familiarity or fail-

ure to pay attention. Use this

machine with respect and caution to

lessen the possibility of operator

injury. If normal safety precautions

are overlooked or ignored, serious

personal injury many occur.

NOTICE Water will condense in the air com-pressor tank. Water left in the tankcan cause the tank to weaken andcorrode, increasing the risk of tankrupture.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Pump motorwill not start.
