INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (BHU), VARANASIThe Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) owes its existence to Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, Bharat Ratna -the founder of the first residential university of modern India, Banaras Hindu University, who could foresee the vital role of technical education in strengthening independent India. Engineering education in BHU started in 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). The next stage of development saw the establishment of College of Technology (TECHNO) and College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET). In 1968, the erstwhile engineering colleges of BHU, namely BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). IT-BHU has been admitting students through the JEE conducted by the IITs since 1972. The erstwhile IT-BHU was ranked consistently amongst the top engineering institutions of the country. IT-BHUbecameIIT (BHU) on June 29, 2012, by an Act of Parliament. Following conversion to IIT, the Institute engaged itself in taking up the mammoth task of putting many of the procedures and practices similar to those of IITs.Centenary Celebration and Global Alumni Meet:The centenary celebrations started from Basant Panchami day of 2018 (22 February 2018) to commemorate the glorious journey of 100 Golden years of our institution andwill continue up to the BasantPanchami day of 2020. In this period, the IIT(BHU) will take stock of its journey through the last 100 years and assess its current strengths vis-à-vis the national grand challenges and its future role as a premier institute of the country. Several events have been planned, and some of them already carried out as part of the Centenary Celebrations during the year(s) 2018-2020. A significant occasion was the exciting 4-day event on the Centenary theme of Next 100 IIT(BHU) that took place from 8th Feb to 12th Feb 2019 during theInstitute Centenary & Basant Panchami Day (10th February 2019) and the Global Alumni Meet.As a mark of recognition of Centenary Celebrations of the institute, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated PARAMSHIVAYat IIT (BHU) Varanasi, the SuperComputer of 833 teraflop capacity under the National Supercomputing Mission.
