FEELING UNINSPIRED.......

What motivates us as artists? What moves us to put paint on surfaces to create and express? Sometimes, I find myself at a loss for inspiration. I miss that urgent need to put down on paper the scene, memory or person who moved me beyond the need for sleep or food. Where did it go? Will it ever return? Why did I lose it in the first place?

drawing to paint. This means that in a class of ten or twelve, I am overlooking that many individual subjects. What I must do is "paint" each of them in my mind in order to instruct them how to paint their subject. So, now when I look for inspiration, I sometimes find myself saying “no, so and so did that,” so it limits my subject matter.

Now, how do I turn this around? I need to get out and look at the world. I need to find the joy in exploring our state, attending concerts, traveling the world or just looking at the colors in a glass of wine. I can look around at the work of my fellow artisans and say "I can never paint like that!" I need to turn that discouragement into "I can never paint like that, but look at how I do paint!"

When you feel uninspired, what do you do? Do you put away your paints for a while? Do you go to a gallery? Do you sort through the photos on your phone? Whatever pokes you in the back to keep you moving forward, continue to do it, and if you see me looking a little intensely at a candy wrapper dropped on the sidewalk, don't worry, I will pick it up after I am done being inspired by the folds and shadows it created!

February Program:

Lorraine Watry gave an interactive program on matting and framing at our February meeting. Lorraine said she frames her pieces to send to shows and galleries, so she only uses off-white mats and generally glazes them with plexi-glass. She showed examples of different frame corners on one of her paintings and discussed why they might or might not work with the painting. Then she showed us how to cut a double mat, and we followed along with our hands-on kits. As Lorraine cut her mats, we tore paper mats for a better understanding of the process. Lorraine showed the group how to attach the painting to the foam core, use framing points, cover the back of the painting with brown paper, and finish with D-rings, wire, bumpers and painting labels.

Lorraine teaches watercolor to all levels from beginning to advanced in small classes and workshops at her home studio. Be sure to visit her website at www.LWatryStudio.com. You might also like to visit her blog, Watercolor Reflections, at www.lorrainewatry.blogspot.com

March Program:

Robert C. Murray II was born in Hollywood, California, and has lived and worked in Mexico, where he became an accomplished oil and watercolor artist, exhibiting his detailed work and receiving numerous awards. He recently moved to Colorado Springs with the intention of focusing solely on his art by painting, showing and teaching. Light is his main source of inspiration.

Visit his ArtPal page http://www.artpal.com/rcmurray2 where you will find more about Robert and his art, as well as a link to a short YouTube video demonstration.

Robert recently became an associate member of the PPWS and looks forward to being our watercolor demonstration artist for March.

Treasurer’s Report as of February 17, 2016by Kathleen Murray, Treasurer

Treasurer’s Report

As of February 17, 2016, the PPWS financial condition is:

• $115.00 in the Education Fund account. This is money donated by members.

• $3,160.06 is on deposit in a savings account for the advance money (deposits and prepayments) for the Boulder Street Gallery Co-op.

• $3,510.03 is the current balance in the BSG Co-op checking account. Almost all of this is for checks written to artist but which are still outstanding.

o The budget for the BSG Co-op is: Monthly income is $2,305.00 per month, assuming the guest wall is rented. Monthly expenses are $2,200.00 for gallery rent and administrative expenses. The remaining $105.00 is available for reception supplies, etc.

• $1,959.59 is the current balance in the general checking account.

o The budget for each month remaining for the year is $290.00 for the studio space, approximately $10.00 for newsletter printing, $45.00 for chef reimbursement, and $125.00 to $150.00 for the demo, totaling approximately $500.00 per month.

o It is about five months until membership fees begin to come in again.

o For the budget, we should have about $2,500.00 on hand right now to cover those expenses without having to dip into the money market fund.

• $13,735.36 is the current balance in the money market fund.

o We need to maintain about $7,500.00 in that account ahead of any Watermedia cycle to be sure we have enough money for the big expenses without holding our breath for entries. Safety net.

o That leaves us a little over $6,000.00 in funds available to be donated to meet our Mission Statement. The Board is considering this issue for 2016. A donation has just been authorized to the ISEA. Funds for this will be transferred to general checking at the end of the month.

Rick Forsyth Signature Member PPWS

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Michigan State University, 1967Masters in Landscape Architecture, Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, 1969

As a landscape architect, I draw inspiration for my watercolors from the basic features and qualities of the landscape: the sky, land, native plants, wind, and, most importantly, the quality of light. Since I began painting I have been interested in the powerful yet simple relationship between the indigenous vernacular architecture of a given locale and the landscape surrounding it.

My aim is to paint “settings,” not so much for what they look like, but for what they mean to me. The careful and sensitive way in which a building has been placed on the land and the craftsmanship that is reflected in the use of native materials and the hues of the early morning and evening light, have inspired my drawings and watercolors.

From 1992 to 1999, I served as Director of the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design’s Italian Studies Program, and in the spring semesters of 1999, 2001, and 2005, I had the opportunity to teach at our Santa Chiara Study Center in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany, Italy, and, in 2009 and 2011, at the Centro Studi Citta Di Orvieto, Umbria, Italy.

The experiences of living and teaching in Italy have had a major impact on me in many ways. Among these are the way I think about landscape, architecture, materials, color, light and space. Italy provides a visually and intellectually enriched environment for any designer and artist. Almost daily I think of my experiences in Italy. The collection of memorable moments has reinforced my belief that to make marks on watercolor paper is an important human activity.
