onds remaining, but a pair of free throws gave the Trojans enough to win, which was the first in the last four tries for TNU. Cumberland jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to open the game and held onto the lead until the 4:16 mark of the first half when J.P. Nayadaro blocked a Haris Bata-levic jumper in the lane and Matthew Elliott drove down the court before kicking it out to Michael France, who drained a go-ahead 3-pointer. On the next possession, Lamar Brinkley gave the Bulldogs the lead again, but Trevecca scored eight of the next 10 points to push its lead out to five points at the break. CU regained the lead four minutes into the second half as Andrew Ay-odeji sank a 3-pointer from the left corner to knot the game at 32 apiece and Springer knocked down the second of two free throws to put the Bulldogs up by a point. Trevecca answered with an 11-1 run to push its lead to 10 points and eventually built the 18-point lead with 8:23 left in the contest.

Chasing 1,000Brandon Springer, a second-year Bulldog, needs just 34 more points to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Springer has scored more than 34 points on two occasions this year, including 36 against Trevecca last month. If he reaches the milestone, the Hunters Lane HS product will be-come the fourth player to do so at Cumberland under head coach Lonnie Thompson.

Springer currently sits in third, trailing Jewel Carter of Graceland University and Bacone Col-lege’s Ronnie Battle by 0.3 and 0.2 points per game, respectively. Springer has scored at least 30 points in six games this year and has scored in double figures in all but two contests this year.

2009-10 STaRTiNg LiNEUPS

Just win in ‘10Since returning from Christmas break, Cum-berland has won six of its 10 games, including four in the month of January, making it the win-ningest month of the season so far. CU picked up just one win in the month of November and earned two victories in December. Despite tougher competition with TranSouth Conference play beginning, the reason for the improvement can be linked to more than one point. The ad-dition of Adam Barnett and Lindal Yarbrough has helped the team find more consistency at the guard positions. Barnett, who was ineligible for the first part of the season, has started eight games and leads the team with a 1.4 assist-to-turnover rate. Yarbrough, who transferred from Middle Tennessee State, is the only other Bull-dogs with a rate above one (1.29). Yarbrough has also been a scoring threat for CU, reaching double digits in four of his eight starts. Also in the games since the beginning of the calendar year, Cumberland has been shooting better from the free throw line. However the biggest difference comes from turnovers. In 10 conference games, Cumberland is giving away the ball 15.6 times a game, while taking it away 17.9 times, including 20 times in the second half of Saturday’s game against Blue Mountain. In nonconference play, the Bulldogs averaged turning the ball over 4.8 times more than their opponents.

Accepting the awardsAfter a week (ending Jan. 24) with three dou-ble-doubles, senior Brandon Springer was recognized as the Player of the Week by both

the TranSouth Conference and the NAIA. The Hunters Lane HS product was the first National Player of the Week that head coach Lonnie Thompson has had in his eight seasons as the coach at Cumberland. During the week Springer averaged 24.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games, including a win over then-No. 18 Union Univ. Springer has earned conference Player of the Week honors three times this year.

Seeing double-doubleWith 15 double-doubles on the year, including a run of seven straight that included every game in the month of January, senior Brandon Spring-er is fourth in the nation in that category. Dur-ing the month of January, the Hunters Lane HS product averaged 27.1 points and 12 rebounds per outing, while shooting 53 percent from the field. Springer isn’t the only Bulldog producing double-doubles this year though as Walter Si-mon and Lamar Brinkley have three and two, respectively. The trio each notched a double-double against Blue Mountain on Jan. 14.

ence at all levels of college basketball, serving as an assistant coach at South Alabama, Middle Ten-nessee, Tennessee State, Creighton and Odessa Junior College, where he coached former NBA All-Star Larry Johnson. Lonnie and his wife, Felicia, have two sons, Destin and Darius, and one daughter, Devin, and the family resides in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Thomp-son received his bachelor’s from Middle Tennessee in 1986 and returned to his alma mater as an as-sistant coach under David Farrar in the mid-90’s.

Cumber land ’s Lonnie Thompson be-gins his eighth season with the Bulldogs and his 12th as a head coach. Thompson’s program has enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess, making its third NAIA National Tour-nament appearance

last season in the last six years, the only national tournament appearances in program history. Last year’s club was the first in program his-tory to make back-to-back national tournament appearances. The Bulldogs also posted their second straight 20-plus win campaign and third in the last six seasons, all coinciding with trips to Kansas City. The Woodbury, Ga., native has posted a 129-95 mark at Cumberland with one TranSouth Conference regular season championship. Thompson posted his 200th career head coach victory last season as well, February 19 at Lambuth University, in just his 11th year as a head coach. Thompson came to CU from Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tenn., where he led the Bucks to back-to-back TJCCAA Eastern Division Championships. He was named TJCCAA Eastern Division Coach of the Year three times at Motlow State and was the unanimous selection for 2004 TranSouth Coach of the Year in just his second season in the conference. That season, he led the Bulldogs to the most wins in school history with a 28-6 record. The 2004

season also saw Thompson capture his 100th career victory as a head coach en route to leading the Bulldogs to the first TranSouth Conference Championship in school history. The program also made the school’s first-ever appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., where they were defeated in the Round of 16. Cumberland posted a 21-12 overall mark in 2007-08 and made its second appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, falling to Oklahoma City in the first round.
