Grammar PointsThe Focus of This Lesson is an Overview of the Tone Change Rules in Spoken Chinese

Tone Change Rules

The Third Tone Rule

When two or more third tone characters occur in a row, the last of these remains a third tonewhile the one(s) before it shift to the second tone. For Example:

1. hěn hǎo is pronounced [hén hǎo]2. nǐ hěn hǎo is pronounced [ní hén hǎo]

The Tone Changes for 不 (bù)

不 (bù) means "not" or "no," and is fourth tone. However, when it comes before anotherfourth tone character, it shifts to the second tone. For Example:

1. bù yào is pronounced [bú yào]

The Tone Changes for 一 (yī)

The word for the number 1 in Chinese, yī, is pronounced as first tone when used as anumeral; whether on its own as in 一, 二, 三 (yī, èr, sǎn), or in combination with anothernumber. For Example:

1. 十一 (shíyī)

一 (yi), normally first tone, becomes fourth tone when preceding a word that is first, second,or third tone, or neutral tone. For Example:

1. yī ge rén is pronounced [yì ge rén]

Anything but a fourth tone word after an 一 (yī) makes the yī change to become fourth tone. For Example:

1. yī wǎn is pronounced [yì wǎn]

If the word after the yī is fourth tone, the yī will become second tone. For Example:

1. yīgòng is pronounced [yígòng]

Pronunciation Tip

The tone changes are reflected in the oral pronunciation of the tones only. The written pinyinform still reflects the original tone of the character, so don’t get confused!
