CRNAs:CelebratingProlific Providers

In celebration of the 20th annual National Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) Week (January 20 – 26), Medicus

wants to recognize the CRNAs who do locum work and/or have a permanent position. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) 2018 Member Profile Survey, CRNAs administer over 45 million anesthetics a year to patients throughout the United States, which is nothing short of extraordinary.

The hallmark of your profession is to provide safe, effective anesthesia care for every patient, and anesthesia care is nearly 50 times safer than it was in the early 1980s, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine. As highlighted in an AANA press release, we are pleased to share and acknowledge a few ways that you and your peers make a difference in the delivery of quality healthcare in our nation:

CRNAs are the primary providers of anesthesia in rural America. Because of you, healthcare facilities in these medically underserved areas can offer obstetrical, surgical, pain management, and trauma stabilization services. Moreover, as reported by the AANA, you and your fellow CRNAs are often the sole providers of anesthesia services in nearly 100 percent of rural hospitals throughout the country.

CRNAs have been the main providers of anesthesia care to our nation’s military personnel on the front lines since WWI.Nurses first provided anesthesia to wounded soldiers during the U.S. Civil War.

CRNAs practice everywhere anesthesia is provided. Among others, these settings include conventional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms; critical access facilities; ambulatory surgical centers; and the offices of dentists, podiatrists,

ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists.

CRNAs help control increasing healthcare costs. Managed care plans recognize that the high-quality anesthesia care that CRNAs provide decreases the expenses of both patients and insurance companies.

Thank you for all you do, CRNAs! We appreciate you and the skills, compassion, and expertise you bring to areas in need of safe, quality anesthesia care.

For more information about the value that CRNAs bring to medicine, visit the AANA and “The Future of Anesthesia Care Today” websites.

3 Tips for Indulging Your Wanderlust as a Locum Tenens Provider

A lthough many independent

contractors pick assignments within driving distance of their home, numerous physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and CRNAs who work locum tenens choose the practice alternative to explore different parts of the United States. These providers enjoy having the option to discover new places.

However, even if making the most of a yet-to-be-visited location appeals to you, it can be easy to lapse into a rhythm of “work, home, work,” essentially limiting your sightseeing adventures to the inside of airport terminals, temporary accommodations, and assignment facilities. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can follow to better indulge your wanderlust during your downtime on assignment.

Before you leave for a locum tenens job, compose a list of things you want to see and do. Find out when nearby attractions are open and if there will be exhibits, festivals, and/or seasonal offerings to enjoy when you are in town. Helpful travel apps—such as Musement, Roadtrippers, and Triposo—can lead you to dining and entertainment spots as well as locations of historical relevance.

Having a selection of things to choose from will give you numerous options to (literally) feed your travel bug during your free time.

Seek recommendations from staff at your assignment facility and other locum tenens clinicians. Most people are flattered when someone expresses a genuine interest in getting acquainted with their community. They are pleased to offer a local’s perspective on must-sees and the best fare in town. In fact, fellow providers, nurses, therapists, and others living in your assignment locale

can often be the greatest resources, whether they are natives or are there to work locum tenens.

Build in extra time. If you would like a few days to explore a city or town and/or its nearby areas, speak with your Medicus Healthcare Solutions recruiter about tacking some extra time to the end of a locum tenens opportunity. It will allow you to take a mini-respite once the assignment is complete and give you more time to see the sights.

Unlike other professionals who routinely take road trips or fly for work, locum tenens providers establish where they go and how long they will stay there. With these tips, you can simultaneously satisfy your desire to bring quality care to patients in need and your desire to travel.

Call Medicus Healthcare Solutions at 855.301.0563 to explore locum tenens opportunities with an experienced recruiter, and read our blog posts for tips, the latest news and trends, and other helpful information.

Organization Tips for Traveling Locum Tenens Providers

On our blog, we provided you with a convenient travel document checklist, outlining essential paperwork to have on

hand as you journey to and from locum tenens jobs. You will, of course, want ready access to a number of items when you are on assignment—from directions and your curriculum vitae (CV) to bills and personal “must haves”—which is why it is important to establish a “portable management system” that will help you stay organized. While some things naturally lend themselves to a digital solution, others call for a physical approach. Here, we offer suggestions that make the most of both options.

Place documents you want to carry, from medical licenses to insurance policies, in an accordion folder. (Your recruiter can provide you with a list of the professional paperwork you need to take on assignment.) An expandable file provides the perfect, central location for your physical papers, and standard versions have 12 pockets and tab inserts to keep things in order. Think about maintaining a separate file for receipts and other important documents you need to save.

When you return to your home base, you can file them in a more permanent location.

Pack a small zippered case with desk supplies, such as a stapler, transparent tape, scissors, paper clips, address labels, and stamps. This “office in a bag” will take up little space and can help you stay on top of personal administrative tasks.

Keep a copy of your CV on your personal computer and update it regularly. Be sure to continuously record locum tenens jobs as you complete them, and review your references and revise them as necessary. To ensure your recruiter always has the latest version, send him or her a copy whenever you amend it.

Get a map of your assignment locale and its surrounding areas, even if you have a GPS, and stash it in your glove compartment along with a road atlas. Both of these traditional tools can help you get to your destination if you encounter a satellite outage or experience problems with your device.

Maintain a physical or electronic file that contains directions to your assignment facilities. This information will come in handy if you are invited to return to facilities or practices for locum tenens opportunities. Be sure to include administrators’ names and titles, pertinent addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, too.

Keep an empty drawer or “between box” at your permanent residence and fill it with items you want to bring to an upcoming locum tenens opportunity, from family photos and books to swimwear and snorkeling gear.

Determining the items you will need as well as those that can enhance your experience—and finding the best way to access and use them—is a strategy with benefits that transcend aesthetics. It will help you feel settled and bring order to your day-to-day activities while you enjoy new opportunities.

To learn about locum tenens opportunities in locations you would like to explore, call 855.301.0563 to speak with a Medicus Healthcare Solutions recruiter.

Did you know?

Take care of basic vehicle maintenance before you leave.

Put together an emergency vehicle kit.

Make sure you have a cellphone car charger.

Determine your route and factor in tolls (or plan to avoid them.)

Check your route and be prepared to encounter different weather conditions.

Verify where you can park at both the facility and housing complex.

Gather your road trip playlist.

Many physicians, advanced practitioners, and CRNAs accepting locum tenens work over a few hours from home opt to travel by plane. However, there are advantages to using your own vehicle to travel to and from an assignment.

If driving to an assignment appeals to you, here are seven things you should do to ensure safe, smooth travel:
