We are looking forward to our 3-Way Conferences next week on Thursday, 17 March (3:45 6:15pm) and Friday, 18 March (8:30am 3:15pm). Please note that there will be NO SCHOOL for the children on Friday, 18 March apart from when they come in for their appointment with you. PTA school buses will not run on this day. ALL AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES will be cancelled on both afternoons. Dear Parents, Below is the invite information regarding the ESF stakeholder survey. This will provide important information for us as a school and it will also be a chance for us to celebrate and acknowledge the many great things about Kennedy. ESF Stakeholder Survey All our parents, staff and Year 5 & 6 children will soon be invited by email to participate in the biennial ESF Stakeholder Survey, which will be open from 14th to 24th March 2016. Through this survey we aim to find out about the impressions that parents, staff and students have formed about the education we provide. The feedback from the survey will help us build on our strengths and inform our future planning. A parent invite will be emailed to the primary contact parent in your family on 14th March. [If you have a child at another ESF school you will receive a separate invite by email to participate in that school’s survey]. Students in Years 5 & 6 will also receive an email inviting them to participate in the survey. We would be very grateful if you would spare the time to complete the survey. It’s shorter than in the past and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete (though may take a little longer if you wish to add comments in the optional comment boxes).

Dear Parents, Below is the invite information regarding the ESF stakeholder survey. This will provide important information for us as a school and it will also be a chance for us to celebrate and acknowledge the many great things about Kennedy.

ESF Stakeholder Survey

All our parents, staff and Year 5 & 6 children will soon be invited by email to participate in the biennial ESF Stakeholder Survey, which will be open from 14th to 24th March 2016. Through this survey we aim to find out about the impressions that parents, staff and students have formed about the education we provide. PTA Coffee Morning It was nice to see so many mums and dad (well…no dads!) at our first PTA coffee morning today. I was able to share some of our initial new hall and playground designs and plans. We look forward to these occurring every month.

Families and Friends

Many of you are aware that Ms Reine Barletta who has been a teacher at Kennedy School for the past twenty three years is currently battling a serious illness. Many of our current and past students have had the pleasure and privilege of being taught by Reine. No one forgets Ms Barletta!

Reine’s treatments are complex and expensive and a friend of Reine who is an ex Kennedy teacher has created an opportunity for friends to make a contribution towards the cost of her treatments. We are proud of our family and community spirit at Kennedy School and it is at times like this that families need to support each other. Your donation can be through the link below or the bank account details listed. Please do not send any cheques or money to the school. Donations can be anonymous but please indicate if you are a current or ex parent, student or staff member.

Please see the details here: https://www.gofundme.com/qmspf884

Please make your contributions for Ms Barletta to the following HSBC account: THOMPSON, N J.

Bank account number: 043-511-575-833

Thank you.

Sandy Bay: Works site or sports facilities?

Please see below a message from Paul Zimmerman, Pokfulam District Councillor, which may have a direct impact on our school:

On 21 March 2016, the Southern District Council will discuss the short term use of a vacant site at Sandy Bay.

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (Universal Accessibility Programme) has submitted an application to use the site for storage and offices for a minimum of 4 years. At the same time, HKU has submitted an application to use the land for an Outdoor Sports and Adventure Education Centre. Which one do you support? Let the local council know by completing the simple survey. The results will be presented to Government. Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VKLQBV5

On Wednesday morning we were wowed by the 2A class assembly which focused on the concept of time and their current transdisciplinary theme, Where We Are in Place and Time. The children shared about units of time such as minutes, hours, days, week, months and years. They also talked about the concept of a lifetime and how change happens over time. They shared about the number of times things happen in the lives of animals, like a male seahorse will birth over 1000 baby seahorses in a lifetime - that's a lot of seahorses!

With strong vocal projection and perfected intonation the children communicated their ideas to the audience with enthusiasm and energy. One of the highlights of the assembly was when they sang Seasons of Love which made more than a few of us tear up. A huge thank you to Mrs. Allenby and Ms. Leung and the students of 2A for sharing with us and to their families for coming out to support them. Well done! I can't wait for next time!

3R CLASS ASSEMBLY - 3R Expresses Themselves On Tuesday morning, 3R presented their class assembly around the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. In a short half an hour they took us through the world of art, dance and music with enthusiasm and heaps of creativity. From fashion shows to sculpture to collage to app created pieces to dance and movement 3R impressed us all. One of the highlights was their emotion movement piece around Anger, Sadness and Happiness. Also their 3R rap left me trying to rhyme for the rest of the day - they certainly blew us all away!

A special thank you to the families who came to support the children in 3R, to Ms. Kirsten Ho, our dancer in residence who worked with the class on movement work and Mr. Roscoe and Ms. Adcock for helping 3R express themselves. And a huge well-done and thank you to 3R for sharing their learning with us. It truly was an expression of themselves. See more photos on our Facebook page.

6M CLASS ASSEMBLY

On Thursday, 6M shared with us their learning about Human Rights. It was an incredibly thought-provoking presentation about a very important issue. They entertained us with some drumming, some amazing technology involving a 'green screen' and a play which demonstrated the injustice that some of the people in our world face. They finished with a song which was designed to make us think about our roles in making change. The children had clearly thought about their audience when creating the assembly and it was pitched at the perfect level for our Year 5 and 6 children.

It was lovely to see many of the 6M parents join us for an assembly that truly left us all with food for thought. Fantastic job 6M - well done! Visit our Facebook page for more photos.

YEAR 3 MINI EXHIBITION

On Thursday afternoon the Year 3 students shared their spectacular art work to parents. The art work was an accumulation of their learning journey through the current unit 'How We Express Ourselves' exploring differing art forms and perspectives in art. The students put together their own exhibition board displaying examples of art which reflected their emotions - poetry, sculptures, clay, costume design, photography, word art, collage and mask making. The students also had their sketch boards on display as well as the canvas they painted when they went 'Art Jamming'. Year 3 all had the opportunity to visit every classroom and comment using post-it notes about the art exhibited. The exhibition boards were so creative and varied and the students were so proud of their work and could talk about their boards with such confidence and enthusiasm. There was a real buzz in all the classes and real sense of pride! It was wonderful to see so many parents attending too and providing such positive feedback to the children. A really superb afternoon! Thank you to all the Year 3 team for the incredible amount of work that went into preparing for the mini exhibition! Well done everyone! Many more photos are available on our Facebook page. Emma Navin Vice Principal

EXPRESS YOURSELF

EXPERTS AND PASSIONATE PEOPLE NEEDED!

I am very excited to announce to the Kennedy Community that this year's Year 6 Exhibition falls under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. Students will be able to choose a form of expression that is meaningful for them and explore it in great depth and share their findings and creations with us all. The students won't be kicking off their Exhibition until after Easter but I'd like to start compiling a list of the experts within our school community. So if you are a painter, a poet, a

sculptor, a writer, a coder, a dancer, a musician, a photographer, an actor, a fashion designer, a chef - you get the idea - please follow this link and fill in the Google form: http://goo.gl/forms/FPQABjxHhp

I'll meet with all interested experts to talk through the process and how you can help. Then, as the students begin to form their interest groups and start the process, I'll connect them to you as a valuable first person resource. Sounds exciting right? It is!

The Google form is live as of now and I'll put reminders in the newsletter over the coming weeks.

Thank you in advance for your interest, your passion and your commitment to helping out the Kennedy Community.

MESSAGE FROM THE MEDICAL ROOM

PE kits donations wanted The nurse office is looking for donations of second hand PE kits, especially the shorts if any parents have spares sitting around at home. Also if your child has been lent a kit by us recently and has not returned it, we would really appreciate them doing so, so we have spares for other children in the future.

High influenza activity The Centre for Health Protection informed us that the current influenza activity in Hong Kong is very high. Vigilance should be maintained and the following measures are advised to prevent influenza and respiratory tract infections:

Page 9: 3-Way Conferences - English Schools Foundationenews-kennedy.esf.edu.hk/sites/kennedy/files/Kennedy_Newsletter_2… · 3-Way Conferences next week on ... At the same time, ... 3-WAY

Parents need to check the body temperature of their child/children every day before they leave home for school. To prevent outbreaks of influenza and other respiratory infections, it is of prime importance that children with fever (temperature higher than

37.5℃) regardless of the presence of respiratory symptoms, should not be allowed to attend school. They should be advised to seek medical advice and should avoid school till 48 hours after the fever has subsided.

To receive seasonal influenza vaccination for personal protection;

To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest;

To maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;

To keep hands clean and wash hands properly;

To cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;

To wash hands after sneezing, coughing or cleaning the nose;

To maintain good ventilation;

To avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places when influenza is prevalent;

If your child is unwell, please email your child’s teacher and [email protected] to inform us of the nature of your child’s illness.

FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT

ESF Basketball Tournament

In what has been an extremely busy term of fixtures our basketball were in action this week at the ESF Basketball Tournament. Despite the rain the tournament proceeded as we shifted indoors. This meant a reduction in court size and thus fewer players in action during games which had an effect on the dynamics of our team. Unperturbed, our players adjusted to the changes and gave it their best shot, quite literally, in what was to be a very tough group. Unfortunately it took a couple of games for the team to get up to speed and it was those two games which ultimately cost us the chance to qualify for the semi finals. Having said that, there was only one game where the opponent dominated and even then the result was in the balance right up until the final hooter. A fifth placed finish overall is something the team can be very pleased with considering the quality of the teams who ultimately competed for a place in the final. A special mention to Sophia Jeffery who was voted into the All Star team of the day.

CIS Road Race - Saturday 12th March All the best to our six running teams who will be competing in the CIS Road Race bright and early on Saturday morning. A huge thank you in advance to Mr. Moore, Mrs. Tait and Mr. Richardson for their time preparing the children for this event. Auskick 2016

Hong Kong Auskick is an Australian Rules Football program for boys and girls from 5 to 12 years old, catering to all skill levels and highly compatible with any football background or passion. In conjunction, Hong Kong Junior AFL provides further training, development and the opportunity to play games in age groups from U8 to U15. The programs makes learning to play the team game of Aussie Rules fun, safe and easy for kids. Through weekly coaching sessions the players will learn the skills of the game in an exciting, social and safe environment. It also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with the kids during the activities, make new friends across Hong Kong, have a kick and just enjoy the greatest game on earth.

The 2016 Season in Hong Kong runs from late April to the end of August, making it a perfect off-season fit with other football codes. A modified program is conducted across most of July to cater for holidays. Sessions are hosted by 5 Clubs based in locations across Hong Kong: Kowloon, Lantau (DB), Sai Kung, Sandy Bay (Pok Fu Lam) and Happy Valley. In 2016 our players of all ages will also have the opportunity to participate in a touring party that will travel to compete against Singapore Auskick, and on 3 July our Auskickers have the chance to play on the hallowed turf of the MCG at half time of the AFL game between the Melbourne Demons and the Adelaide Crows. Visit the website at auskickhk.com to sign up, or like us on facebook.com/auskickhk to get updates. Register by Easter Sunday 27 March to ensure your kit is available prior to kit collection for the first session weekend on 23/24 Apr 2016.

Upcycling - Laos Rugby Federation

As part of our ongoing support for grassroots rugby another batch of boots and rugby balls along with approximately 50 tag belts are about to wing their way to Laos. Before you throw out any old trainers or football boots please consider donating them to the Laos Rugby Federation courtesy of the school. Please place any unwanted trainers or boots into the blue bin inside the school office. For this project we have currently donated 230 pairs of shoes towards our target of 710. Please click HERE and HERE to discover about the long term impact your donations are having.

Correct Winter P.E. Uniform

As the weather has become cooler and children are beginning to wear tracksuit bottoms to school on PE or Games days, please ensure your child wears PE shorts UNDER their tracksuit bottoms. Cardigans, jumpers AND tracksuits must be removed for safety during PE and may need to be removed during Games when they are running around. Please also ensure that tights are not worn under shorts on PE days as these pose a slip hazard when shoes are removed in the gym. Thank you for your assistance.

Kennedy School Games Programme

Children in Year 1 to 3 follow a skills programme, while children in Year 4 to 6 follow a progressive sports programme which introduces them to rounders, cricket, athletics, netball, tag rugby and hockey, as shown below:

Additionally, for children in Year 4 to 6, please ensure your child has the correct kit for their Unit: Hockey - in accordance with the HKHA regulations all Y4-6 children participating in hockey MUST wear shin pads and a mouth guard. Long socks to hold shin pads are also recommended. All of these items are available from the PTA Office. Rugby - although there is no mandate from the HKRFU we strongly recommend the use of mouthguards when playing rugby.

Please ensure mouthguards are moulded in hot water to fit your child's mouth PRIOR to their games lesson.
