EUROPE 2020 STRATEGY

Puts forward three mutually reinforcing priorities:

• Smart growth: developing an economy based on knowledge andinnovation.

• Sustainable growth: promoting a more resource efficient, greener and morecompetitive economy.

• Inclusive growth: fostering a high-employment economy delivering socialand territorial cohesion.

The Commission is putting forward seven flagship initiatives to

catalyse progress under each priority theme:1. "Innovation Union" to improve framework conditions and access to finance

for research and innovation so as to ensure that innovative ideas can beturned into products and services that create growth and jobs.

• In 2009, EPO patent applications are dominated by consumerelectronic companies: Philips with over 2,500 patents, Siemens,BASF, Samsung, Bosch, LG, and Panasonic in the 1-2 thousandrange, Nokia with 600.

- Germany 25,000 patents.

- France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, Italy and Swedenwith 3-9 thousand patents,

- most other EU-15 countries with ca. 1,000 patents, EU-27countries with 100 – 200, with the baltic states, Croatia (21patent), Bulgaria (17) and Romania (13) in the <50 group.

- USA 33,000 patents,

- Japan 20,000 patents.
