    For s tudies in paral le l polar ized l ight the screen i s removed and thei l luminat ion res t r ic ted to a smal l apertu re a t the ce nt re of a disk placedup on the cell. Becke-l ine observ at ions are ma de wi th a hand-lens forre f rac t ive index de te rmina t ion .

    W hen m onoc hrom at i c l igh t is required the sphere m ay be i l l umina tedby a sod ium-vapour l amp or o ther source inser t ed in an opening for thepurpose in the s ide of the re f lec tor and dye d photogra phic p l a t es a reuseful as f i l ters for demonst rat ion work.
