YESHIVA TORAS CHAIM / TORAS EMES ACADEMY OF MIAMI

April 13, 2010

Dear Parents,

We greatly value your continued enrollment in our school and our partnership in educating your children, andwould like to continue this relationship.

We are writing at this time, because this coming Thursday April 22, is the conclusion of our regular registrationperiod, and some of you have not yet registered your child(ren) at Yeshiva Toras Chaim / Toras Emes Academyfor next year. This is a potential concern, not only for the added fees that will be incurred for late registration, butmore importantly, because you may be jeopardizing your child’s place in the class.

We all know that the number of school-aged children in our community is growing steadily, and yet our capacityto absorb more children has not, as of today, kept pace. While we eagerly await the construction of our new 17classroom facility that will greatly expand our classroom spaces for the early childhood, elementary and middleschool divisions, completion of that project is at least two years away. In the interim, we face a potential crisisof having to turn away deserving families from our school due to lack of space. In addition, we have beensurprised this spring, with the large number of applicants who have shown a strong and serious desire to transfertheir children into our school. Our policy is to give precedence to current families, as a matter of course.

It is important to note that it is to everyone’s advantage that registration be completed by April 22. We can thenproperly plan for the new school year, our students can maintain the continuity of their education, and provideyour children the best educational experience we can offer. Current families who have not yet registered, and donot register by the time new students go through the application process and are accepted, may find themselves inline behind a new family.

With all this in mind, we urge you to avoid a potential conflict, and take the time to complete your registration andforward it to any school office, by April 22.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Sincerely,

The Administration

Erev Shabbos Parashas Tazria – Metzora 5770

Dear Parents,

This coming week, we will be introducing two projects for the children to be involved with outside of school. There will be various reactions from parents, verbalized or otherwise, that will be either pro or con (or unsure). The point of this letter is to focus on the approach a parent should take when their reaction is in the ‘con’ column.

The programs beginning this week will be our Annual Sefira TV Control Program, and the Annual Walkathon, which will take place on (the day after) Lag B’Omer. Your reaction will be different to the two differentprograms. The approach to dealing with any negative feelings will be the same.

There may be opposition to TV Control because of a feeling the Yeshiva is intruding on a personal matter, or it’sasking too much of my child, or it’s simply too great an inconvenience for the rest of the family.

There may be opposition to having one’s child solicit Tzedaka money for the Walkathon, even if only from family(unrelated to everyone’s participation in the actual walkathon at school). In fact, the debate over the chinuchvalue of children collecting Tzedaka is an old one, and consequently we now limit the projects to two or threetimes a year.

The most important aspect to keep in mind about these programs, and others like them is that they are voluntary.Too many parents feel ‘put upon’ when the school, or shul, or camp conducts a project or program that they feel isinappropriate (for whatever reason) for their family. This feeling need not and should not be the case! If parentsdon’t want their child to participate, they should feel self-confident to the point where they can calmly andforthrightly let their children know, that this is not for our family. It may be ‘not at this time’, or ‘not in thismanner’ but the main point is that it is OK not to participate in every voluntary program your child comes homewith, and the decision should not be a source of anger or anguish.

How does one achieve this self-confidence? I refer you back to what we discussed in a previous letter – parentsneed to discuss and think about their values and principles and contemplate the many varied circumstances thatinevitably arise in their children’s lives. Then they can act in accordance with their sincerely held beliefs, even inthe face of children who are eager to join in.

The school-home partnership will inevitably include disagreements, as any healthy relationship will. The key isto agree to disagree in a way that will not upset you or your children.

Have a wonderful Shabbos,

Rabbi Kalman BaumannPrincipal
