Welcome back from what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable break. I trust that all members of the Radford community have taken time to recharge the batteries and takestock of all that was achieved in the first term of the academic year.

In most schools, Term Two is traditionally a busy time, and of course Radford College is no exception. A cursory review of the current calendar reveals an array of eventsplanned for this term including this week’s Year 7 – 9 Drama production, Hating Alison Ashley; the Year 9 Production in Week 4, the Combined Schools Music Festival inBrisbane, the Jazz Café, the P&F Art Show, Race Around Canberra for Year 8 students, and the Timor Leste and Gamilaraay trips for our senior students. The academicprogram also intensifies in Term Two with NAPLAN testing next month for students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9, and examinations for students in Years 9 – 12 in mid to late June.

There are obviously some exciting times ahead and I hope every student manages to maximise his or her experiences here at Radford again this term.

Deputy Principal Announced

After an exhaustive process, which included a national search and a thorough selection procedure, I am delighted to announce that Mr Phillip O’Regan will be the College’s new Deputy Principal and Head of Secondary School from the beginning of Term Three.

Mr O’Regan currently holds the position of Head of Upper School at the prestigious Pymble Ladies College in Sydney, a position hehas held since the beginning of 2011. Prior to that he was Head of Senior Years at The Scots College in Sydney. In the eight years hewas at The Scots College, he also held a number of other senior positions including Dean of Studies, Mentoring Coordinator and YearCoordinator for Years 10, 11 and 12. He has also been a Head of Department and a Director of Sport and PDHPE in schools inMelbourne. Mr O’Regan will be joined in Canberra by his wife (who is also a teacher) and their three young children.

As part of the selection process, the Business Manager, Mrs Jocelyn Martin, and I observed Mr O’Regan at his current school. Wewere both very impressed by Mr O’Regan’s professionalism, strong social skills, fine intellect, superb organisational skills, and

commitment to the pastoral care program and to those with whom he has contact.

I have no doubt that students, staff and parents of Radford will enjoy working with Mr O’Regan and will benefit from the experiencesand innovation he will bring to the College.

Feedback on the wearing of the uniformSince the beginning of the year, I have been meeting with as many staff as possible in order to get to know them and to hear their thoughts about Radford College. Inparticular, I want to know what they think are the really positive things about the College and what are the things that require attention.

On the positive side, all staff have described how wonderful the students are here at Radford. They have used descriptions such as: “a delight to teach”, “have a genuineappreciation of the importance of a good education”, “beautiful people”, “sincere” and “a stunning group of young people”. They have also talked about the brilliance of theircolleagues, the beautiful grounds and facilities, the excellent academic results and the wide ranging and high standard of the co-curricular program. Staff have also given mea extensive range of issues that they believe need to be addressed in the College and I will be working with them to tackle these issues in the coming weeks and months.

However, there is one issue that has been mentioned by many staff that I believe can be addressed immediately. Staff of both genders have expressed great concern anddiscomfort about the length of the skirts and/or dresses of our female students, particularly in the Senior School.

Today I spoke to all girls in Year 11 and Year 12 about this issue. I explained that as Principal I can not have teachers feeling uncomfortable about the way some of the girlswere wearing their uniform. I clearly explained to the girls that they needed to have the hem length of their skirt ‘4 fingers’ above their knee, as detailed in the uniform policy.I have given the girls an amnesty until Monday of next week to let the hem down if it is too short, after that there will be consequences.

ICT and Learning @ Radford CollegeDiary date: Thursday 22 MayTime: 5.30pm - 6.30pmVenue: New Senior School Lecture Theatre Education Forum - ICT and Learning @ Radford

Regular readers of the eBulletin will be aware that last term I wrote on several occasions about the imminent release of details regarding the 1:1 Program that will be rolledout over the next couple of years.

I am now in a position that to inform the College community that information about the 1:1 Program will be released in late May to coincide with the Term Two EducationForum, which will be focussing on ICT and Learning @ Radford College. The Forum will feature a range of speakers detailing the educational rationale for the program, theyear levels involved, the devices selected, and the repair and servicing options available.

I encourage parents to come along to this forum, which will be held in the new Senior School lecture theatre from 5.30- 6.30pm on Thursday, 22 May. This forum will provideparents with first-hand information about the program and also allow parents to ask questions.

PARENT CONTACT DETAILSReception

Radford Community Mandarin Language ClassesContact: Mr Chad Birks, Mandarin Teacher

These classes will be restarting on Monday 5 May 2014. The classes are open to all teachers, parents and students, as well as the general community.

Location: Radford Junior School Library Time: Beginners classes 5.15 – 6:00pm Continuing classes 6.00 – 6.45pm Cost: $60 per term Focus: Speaking fluent Mandarin

The classes have been highly successful for those who have stuck with it and these participants are now competent speakers of conversational Mandarin:

“I have attended Zhongwenke (Chinese Classes) on and off for a few years now with Chad. During the times when I attended regularly, I really learned somuch! I am now able to give many of my classroom instructions in Chinese and I am able to hold brief conversations. I find it easier to learn and retain newwords because of the way these classes have been conducted. Less notes… More conversations. This is a great way to learn a language. I recommendZhongwenke to any teacher in this school as a way of connecting with what your children are learning.” Richard Black (Radford Teacher)

“The discussions in class are great. Everyone is encouraged to participate in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere. My Chinese has definitely improved and Iam looking forward to starting classes again.” Drew Miller (Radford Parent)

To be successful at learning the Mandarin Language you will need to consistently attend classes and be willing to practice five to ten minutes a day. If you're a parentpractising with your child is a great way to support your their learning.

If you are willing to commit to learning Mandarin please email [email protected] with your name, contact number, and a short paragraph about why you want tostudy Mandarin. Please include information about any previous study of Mandarin you have undertaken. Hope to see you there! Chad Birks

ARTSHOW@RADFORDCelebrating 30 years

Gala opening: Friday 30 MayShow continues: Sat 31 May and Sun 1 June

Volunteering

The 2014 Radford Art Show is fastapproaching, showcasing art works fromlocal artists for sale as a major schoolfundraiser.

As always we're reliant on volunteers to helpthings go smoothly. Tasks range from settingup the hall, hanging and displaying theartwork, door duties, 'red-spotting', assistingon the sales desk and packing up -no experience at all required!

We also require people to bake slices andcakes for the cafe. If you can spare an hour orso to help out, that would be fantastic.

To volunteer, or for further information, please contact Clare Cable [email protected] or 0412 963 500

Background to the Art Show...

Radford College's 2014 Annual Art Show will be a celebration of 30 years of the showcasing of some of Canberra and the region’s finest artistic talent. The Art Show displaysfor viewing and for sale an impressive range of quality original artwork created in many and varied mediums: paintings, photography, ceramics, glass, metal and wood works, jewelry and sculpture. This year over 100 local and regional artists are registered to exhibit. Student artwork will also be exhibited but will not be available for sale. On the evening of Friday 30th May, the show will begin with a Gala Opening. Harriet Elvin, CEO ACT Cultural Facilities Corporation will be the guest speaker. A $20 entranceticket will provide a champagne supper and a splendid opportunity to mingle with fellow art enthusiasts, in a very convivial and pleasant atmosphere. The fact that so many different mediums are priced to suit all budgets helps to set the Radford Art Show apart from other similar artistic events in Canberra. Sale proceeds from the art show provide important revenue to the Radford College Parents and Friends Association. These funds are donated to the College to beapportioned to many and varied school initiatives. Indeed the organization and planning of such an art show involves an enormous amount of time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm from Radford College parents, especially the Radford College Art Show Committee. We hope you can join us. To volunteer please contact Clare Cable [email protected] or 0412 963 500.

A warm welcome back to all our families and a particular welcome to Harrison Lonsdale who joins our Year 5 group this week. Speaking of Year 5, it's always lovely as weenter this term to see the new Year 5 uniforms, ties, blazers and all!

I commence this e-Bytes with some mixed staffing news:

Warm wedding congratulations are in order for Ms Ellie Price who became Mrs Ellie Ellis on Easter Sunday in Tasmania, and to Mr Chad Birks who was married onEaster Saturday here in Canberra. I know you join me in wishing them great joy and happiness in this new phase of their lives.

Regretfully however, I must report that we are losing Mr David Gocentas at the end of this term, as he and his family are seeking an International School position inLaos. David has been a wonderful classroom teacher, and tremendous PYP Coordinator here and will be sadly missed. No classes will be impacted by David'sdeparture.

Additionally, at the end of this term we sadly farewell Mrs Michele O'Sullivan who was a founding member of our ELC and has driven our Physical Education programin the early years. Her expertise and vivacious personality will be sorely missed.

Parent Teacher InterviewsApart from a small number of catch ups, all Term 1 Parent and Teacher Interviews have been completed. I would welcome any feedback from our families, in particulararound our three-way interviews at Years 5 and 6. Mid-year reports form our reporting cycle this term.

Cross CountryWeek One heralds our second whole College Cross Country event. This Friday between midday and 2pm we have the chance to see over 1600 students involved in the ourevent. The carnival commences with our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten runners competing in front of the entire College in their wonderfully named " hot cross country"race around the oval.

AthleticsBest laid plans... given that we have the Cross Country Carnival at the end of Week 1 and NAPLAN in Week 3, it is too congested for us to fit in an Athletics Carnival thisterm. I therefore will have to seek another August date for this even,t as Belconnen Zone falls shortly after that. I know, I know, never believe forecasts!

Our classes have resumed well, with great energy apparent on Day One...many chocolates I'm thinking. Our year level Team Organisers will be updating our onlineinformation during coming days. As the weather fades over the coming days and I commence complaining about our winters, it's always wonderful to see our lovely studentsout and about, brightening up our days. Welcome back.

Warm regardsPaul Southwell

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME REVIEW

The International Baccalaureate (IB) remains at the forefront of international education by ensuringthat its programmes are distinctive, relevant and of high quality. To that end, each programmeembarks upon a regular period of evaluation and review in order to take account of the latestresearch and economic, social demographic and technological trends.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is the IB’s fastest growing programme, currentlyimplemented in 1,101 schools in more than 100 countries. In 2012, the IB embarked on its firstcomprehensive review process of the PYP since its launch in 1997. PYP Heads, Coordinators andeducators at IB World Schools will have until 31 May, 2014 to share thoughts, comments andobservations with the PYP Development Team.

While all aspects of the PYP will be considered during this review, particular areas or themes willbe focused on. Driving the review process is the desire to help ensure a relevant, engaging andchallenging programme that provides PYP students with the skills necessary for success in arapidly changing world.

These ‘themes’ under review are grouped together under the following six headings:

Chad Birks
