McAinsh, Ms Nevin-Lewis, Mrs Dahmes and Ms Peters all heading off on maternity leave.

I am pleased to be able to advise the community of the following appointments:

Mrs Tracy Iliff has been appointed the Acting Director of the Early Learning Centre to cover Mrs McAinsh whilst she is on maternity leave

Ms Katey Anstee has been appointed to the teaching staff in the Senior School to teach Ms Nevin-Lewis’ classes whilst she is on maternity leave

Ms Melissa Gush has been appointed to the teaching staff at the Albury campus to cover Mrs Dahmes’ classes whilst she is on maternity leave

Mrs Tess Darts has been appointed to the teaching staff in the Junior School to teach Ms Peters’ Year 2 class for the remainder of the year while Ms Peters takes maternity leave

I am really pleased with these appointments and know that all of these staff will make a significant contribution to the College during their time here.

I am sure that these new members of staff, whether they are on the academic or administrative staff, will be made welcome by parents, students and staff when they commence in their roles at the College.

Date Claimer – 10 Year Anniversary Celebrations A small group of parents and staff are working with me to organise a series of events to celebrate 10 years of Trinity operating as a school. The dates for these events are marked on the College calendar and are as follows:

Friday, 25 May – Evening Performance Event in the Multi Purpose Hall

Saturday, 26 May – the ‘Blue & Red’ Ball, to be held at the Albury Convention Centre

Sunday, 27 May – a Chapel service to be held in the Multi Purpose Hall followed by a family picnic in the grounds of the Albury campus

I hope that these events will provide the College community, past and present, with an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the establishment and growth of the College since it commenced operations in 2002.

Please mark these dates in your diaries and keep an eye out for further details about the events planned for the weekend.

Growing Boys Into Good Men This week the Head of Junior School, Mrs Chris O’Loan in conjunction with Mrs Ren Lefevre, the Director of Pastoral Care and a number of our male teachers in the Junior School are running a special programme designed to assist our young boys (from Year 3 – 6) develop into fine men. The programme

Page 3: 30 March 2012 - Amazon S3...Newsletter Week 9, Page 1 Term 1, Week Ending 30 March 2012 Newsletter 8 30 March 2012 From the Principal Staffing News I am pleased to provide the College

includes a strong emphasis on the significance of the influence that positive male role models have on these young boys. Thus, each participant will have a male mentor – most often the boy’s Dad – who will work through the activities with his son!

I am really excited about this programme and commend the staff involved for all of their hard work in producing and presenting it. I am sure that our young boys (and their fathers or mentors) will gain a lot from the evening.

In this context, I reproduce an excerpt from an article on the influence that fathers have on the development of their children. This article comes from the ‘Parenting Ideas’ website and was written by Michael Grose. I would encourage parents to take some time to have a look at the website – www.parentingideas.comau – as it has some good resources for all parents!

‘Being A Great Dad’ There’s no doubt that fathering has changed in recent years. Gone is the distant dad of the 1960’s and 70’s who saw his main job as keeping a roof over his family’s head and bread on the table. An occasional game in the backyard and dishing out the heavy discipline that mums couldn’t deal with was the extent of his involvement with his kids.

Many dads say that they want a better relationship with their children, particularly their sons, than they had with their own fathers.

Sadly, many men still don’t enjoy a close relationship with their fathers, but they are determined to change things with their own kids. Here are seven ideas to help you form close relationships with your kids, and maximise your effectiveness as a parent and a partner:

1. Find something in common with your kids Dads need something in common with their children. They relate better when they have a shared interest or shared passion with their kids. Many men relate to their kids while being active, and teach many important lessons through games and play. But if sport is not your bag, find something else that you and your kids have in common. A common interest is a great help for fathers who live apart from their kids who are looking to maximise the time they have with them.

2. Spend time with your sons A dad can do little wrong in the eyes of a young boy. From around the age of five years a boy thinks his dad is like superman. Ironically, he may give his mum a hard time at this stage. Dads need to spend as much time with their sons in

Page 4: 30 March 2012 - Amazon S3...Newsletter Week 9, Page 1 Term 1, Week Ending 30 March 2012 Newsletter 8 30 March 2012 From the Principal Staffing News I am pleased to provide the College

these impressionable years as possible. They just need to be careful not to push their sons too hard or turn every game into a lesson. That’s when boys turn off their dads.

3. Don’t whimp out on discipline Dads are traditionally the kings of play, but they can go missing when it comes to discipline. They get their kids excited in a game before going to bed, then expect their partner to settle them down. It helps if both parents can take their share of managing children’s behaviour.

4. Treat your daughters well There are strong links between close fathering and the healthy development of girls. Dads teach their daughters strong lessons about how they should be treated by males. So dads need to treat their daughters respectfully so they learn to expect this treatment in their future relationships with men.

5. Say good bye Superman, hello Clarke Kent Adolescent boys are programmed to challenge their fathers. It’s part of the growing up process. Australian author John Marsden refers to this phenomenon as the ‘old ram, young ram syndrome’. He’s right. It’s a type of rite of passage that plays out in many Australian homes. Verbal jousting matches are a popular father-son game where boys take great delight in proving their fathers are fallible. Dads at this stage need a sense of humour as well as a willingness to stand back and allow other mentors in to his son’s life.

6. Support your partner Fathers may play an integral part in the lives of their children but they also have a profound effect on the quality of mothering that children receive. There is little doubt that a woman who can share the emotional and financial burdens of child-rearing with a supportive partner is more likely to be a loving, affirming mother. Supportive fathering is one of the keys to better mothering.

7. Change as your child changes Kids grow up at the speed of light and change before you know it. They’re kids one day and teenagers the next. They can catch many fathers unaware. The most effective dads are those who change their parenting to suit the needs of their kids at each stage of development, rather than stubbornly hold to outmoded ideas of how they think their kids should be.

Those fathers who are a little apprehensive or lack sufficient confidence should become involved in as many aspects of parenting as they can. The best way to learn about parenting is by doing it. Children are a terrific resource for fathers - men can learn about children from children themselves. By being alert, watchful

and learning to listen to their children, fathers can learn all they need to know about parenting.

A Reminder that Term 2 starts for all students on Monday, 23 April – which is an A Week on the College timetable. All students should present in the correct winter uniform, with hair etc. at the standard expected by the College. The outer garment for the winter uniform is the blazer for Year 11 & 12 students and the red jumper for students in the Junior Schools and Years 7-10.

The Wednesday of week 1 Term 2, is ANZAC Day and therefore the College will not operate as it is a National Public Holiday. However, as has been the practice the local RSL clubs have invited Trinity students to be part of their ANZAC Day parades. It would be wonderful to see as many students as possible (dressed in full winter uniform) participate in the marches on Wednesday, 25 April.

In Wodonga students need to assemble outside the Vietnam Vets Club in Havelock Street at 10.40 am ready for a 11.00 am start.

In Albury students should assemble at the corner of Spencer & Dean Streets at 8.40 am. Parents can collect their children when the march concludes outside the Chifley Hotel at the western end of Dean Street. All students must remain with the staff until they are collected by a parent.

On the last day of Term, Thursday, 5 April the College will conduct the Final Assemblies. The times for the assemblies are:

Albury Junior School Assembly starting at 9.05 am (MPH)

Albury Senior School Assembly starting at 2.10 pm (MPH)

Wodonga Assembly starting at 11.50 am (Lib)

Parents are invited to attend these assemblies. Even though some of these assemblies are held early in the day, students are expected to attend school for the entire day.

The Year 11 and 12 Parent/Student/Teacher interviews will be held on Monday, 14 May, 3.30 – 7.30 pm. The booking service is now open and will close at 4.00 pm Friday 11 May. The booking code is 9LWV4 and the link to the website below is available from the College website.

The main project, the painting of the Food Technology room, was a big success and has really turned this room into an engaging and energetic room through the bright colours and creation of the chalkboard wall. I thank all of the parents who helped out in any capacity throughout the day as your efforts have helped move the campus along in terms of the physical environment of the school.

Changes to Bus Services to Wodonga Campus Due to the government schools finishing Term 1 on 30 March, our bus travellers will be affected by bus timetable changes for the week of Monday, 2 April to Thursday, 5 April. Students who travel on Dysons buses will be able to access the following buses:

Mornings: No. 606 from High Street (Water Tower) departing at 8.45am

Afternoons: No. 606 departing Trinity at 3.30pm and arriving at Hovell Street (Water Tower) at approximately 3.45pm.

Students will be dropped off and collected from the normal bus stop at the College. The No. 615 WILL NOT be running.

NO RURAL BUSES WILL BE RUNNING DURING THIS WEEK. Alternative travel arrangements will need to be made for these students.

The final assembly for term will be held next Thursday 5 April at 11.50 am in the Wodonga campus multi-purpose area. Students will be recognised for Academic Endeavour and Service to the College. I encourage parents to come and help celebrate the efforts of those students who will be recognised academically and civically at Trinity for this Term.

A Special Poem from 2AP

I walked through my garden and what did I see? I saw some busy honey bees looking at me.

I walked a little further and guess what I heard? A kookaburra laughing and a baby miner bird.

I kneeled down in my garden and smelled something sweet, I saw a little ladybug with little tiny feet.

I tasted a red strawberry from my vegie patch and when I turned around I saw a baby chicken hatch.

I really love my garden, there’s lots to see and smell. It makes me feel happy and it’s a lot of fun as well.

Volley Ball Report Many thanks to Alex and Isabella for filling in on Monday night. The “Trinity Bilsons” definitely gave the teachers of the Trinity volley ball team “The Paradigms” a run for their money; it was an incredibly close game resulting in us winning our very first set! The game was very suspenseful with Mrs Willis showing off her soccer skills in the game and Isabella hitting the roof a couple of times. All in all it was an amazing game full of fun and laughs.

I also wanted to give Gary a huge thank you for being a great coach to us all!! It really pays off and we are improving as a team every single game.

Grandparents’ Day Afternoon Tea

I would like to acknowledge the work of students and parents and staff in preparing the Afternoon Tea for Grandparents’ Day. A big thanks to all Grade 6 parents who brought along delicious plates of food.

Students from Years 7 – 11 worked throughout the week to prepare the other foods, including sausage rolls, biscuits, slices, sandwiches and quiches, under the supervision of Mrs Pearce, Mrs Kelb and Ms Widdicombe. A smaller group of students from Years 9 & 10 spent the day setting up, making fresh food and serving guests. Thank you to the Ground Staff for assistance with shelter and tables. We estimate around 400 or more people were served. This is a mighty effort and I heartily thank you all.

If you have not yet collected your plates they are in the Grade 6 rooms. Please let me know if you are missing a plate.

Week 8 Answer Water In the Cup

You can try this experiment at home with appropriate supervision.

First, the waiter stuck the match into the lemon wedge, so that it would

stand up straight. Then he lit the match, and put it in the middle of the

plate with the lemon. Then, he placed the glass upside down over the

match. As the flame used up the oxygen in the glass, it created a small

vacuum, which sucked in the water through the space between the

glass without touching or moving the plate. Thus, the waiter got the water

into the glass without touching or moving the plate.

The Annual Mothers’ Day Stall for the Junior School will be held on Wednesday, 9 May, from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon, with gifts ranging from $1 - $10. Whilst this may seem a long way off, there are only 3½ school weeks left before this takes place.

We are also seeking donations of gifts for the stall. If you are stumped for ideas, the following donations can be left: Boxed Chocolates or Share Packs, Luxury Bath Items, Tea Towels/Hand Towels, Face Washers, Soaps, Candle Holders/Candles, Cosy Socks, Scarves/Gloves, Aprons/Oven Mitts, Serving Platers or Crossword /Word Search Puzzles. Donations, large or small, will be greatly appreciated.

Donations can be left in your Child’s Classroom or at the Front Office with Jenny McMillan before Friday, 4 May.
