As an advocate practicing in theCourts in Mumbai over the past somany years, there is one aspect of

human relationships that strikes me themost. The aspect of knot and unknot iswhat I am talking about here.

Till some time ago... many youngsters Imet during workshops would say theywould get married at Bandra Court if theirparents didn’t agree to the marriage. And I would getback and say “but weddings do not happen in BandraCourt, they happen at the Office of the Sub-Registrarsituated in the Mhada office in Bandra”. This was a newlearning for many, who have been mobbed by lawyersoutside Bandra court. Ofcourse now the office is shiftedto Khar!!

Few steps away from the Mhada office is the Familycourt, where on an average 60-70 cases are on the dailyboard of each of the 7 courts - most of them for divorce. Many of the couples are young; married for about 2-4years and now seeking a divorce. There are coupleswho courted/dated and then married and then there arethose who had a jhat mangni and phat shaadi. Incom-patibility, temperamental issues, finances, cultural dif-ferences, violence etc. are some of the issues thatpeople mention as reasons for divorce.

I often wonder if, when people hurry into a marriage forvarious reasons, are they even aware that divorce willbe a long drawn battle. Guess most of the times, it isinauspicious to think about divorce at the time ofmarriage. I am of the opinion that if some time is takento know, understand and inquire about the person, thefamily, the educational and professional backgroundand finances, the cases of divorces may reduce. Aninformed decision is what I highly recommend.

A marriage is a life time decision. For the woman shelets go of her old identity and adopts a new one. Fromname to a house and then a home... it is all new. With

empowerment has come the funda of add-ing your husband’s surname after yourmaiden surname. Doesn’t this lead to anew identity in itself? Isn’t it a facade? Formen, it is the addition to his family, anotherwoman to care for him, another mouth tofeed etc etc. Weddings are expensive thesedays -more with a theme wedding and adestination wedding. The wedding is thatone day of bliss and joy which should pave

the way for a happy married life. However the couple isbogged down with the anxiety of wedding planning, expenses and customs and marriage takes a backseatwhile the wedding becomes the focus. And that’s whereI see the problem. Instead of focusing on the weddingday, I think couples should focus on the days, monthsand years that follow the wedding day. They should talkand share about the married life they intend to have, theresponsibilities that they are willing to share and adjust-ments that they are willing to make. Communicationand personal sharing is the key here. I see this as amajor issue among young couples these days. It is alltaken for granted.

Up the aisle and then soon to file is a difficult situation. The law has its parameters so you cannot hurry with adivorce. The wedding loans are still being paid and nowa new expense for divorce. Knots have to be unknottedand it takes an emotional toll on the couple and theirfamilies leave alone the time spent in court rooms andcourt corridors and at the lawyer’s office. So make aninformed decision about your choice of partner. Taketime to interact with each other and communicate yourfears, anxieties and dreams. Do not hurry into amarriage...hurry can be a disadvantage.

A lesson from Japan's‘hidden Christians'

Tokyo: One hundred and fifty years ago, on March 17,1865, Fr Bernard Petitjean found 15 Japanese outsidethe door of a new church that had been constructed toserve the European community in Nagasaki. Three of thewomen among the group knelt and said to the priest, "Theheart of all of us here is the same as yours."

There had been rumors that in spite of more thantwo centuries of persecution, there were still Christians inJapan, the kakure kirishitan, or "hidden Christians" whohad secretly passed their faith from generation to genera-tion.

Those people who risked their lives to visit Nagasaki’s Oura Church wereproof that the rumors were true. Their visit to the church sparked the last spateof persecution in Japan.

Christianity had been outlawed in 1587 and persecution had begun 10years later with the execution of 26 Christians in Nagasaki. It was possibly themost brutal and systematic persecution of Christians until modern times wereunderway.

The evangelization of Japan began with the arrival of St Francis Xavier in1549, and aimed, like much of the Church’s missionary work at that time, at thebaptism of as many people as possible. Many missioners saw their work as arescue operation, saving souls that were otherwise bound for damnation.

One result was that catechesis was not stressed. Even today, we see theinfluence of this style of mission in Latin America and the Philippines where theChurch has a broad, but not always deep presence. People were baptized, often under coercion, while having only a very rudimentary understanding of thefaith. They knew some prayers (often in Latin) and some devotions to Mary andthe saints who were often amalgamated with local divinities.

In Japan, some Christians went on to learn more about their faith and setup a system of lay leadership. When Catholics were driven into hiding, somecommunities were better equipped than others to remember and pass on theirfaith.

But over the course of two and a half centuries, people forgot doctrines that

the missioners had taught their ances-tors. They had no Scriptures or cat-echisms since books would be evi-dence of their religion. In addition, mostof the kirishitan were illiterate.

They gathered in secret to reciteprayers directed at bundles of cloththat were hidden inside Buddhist al-tars. The bundles contained medals, statues or crucifixes that had beenpassed down to them. Their religionbecame a mix of Buddhism, Shintoand half-remembered Catholicism.

Fathers taught the traditions ofthe community to their children. Villageelders led worship services. If they werediscovered, death was sure, yet thesesmall bands held to a sense of identityas Christians even though almost allthe theology of Catholicism disap-peared from their religion. Loyalty totheir ancestors and to each other boundthem.

When missioners like Fr Petitjeancame to Japan and met the kirishitan, they faced a dilemma. The people con-sidered themselves Christian, but theirpractices and beliefs varied so muchfrom the teaching of the Church that itwas hard to see how they could beaccepted as any kind of Christians.

The response was to call upon thekirishitan to renounce the traditions oftheir ancestors and enter the Churchanew. About half of the estimated30,000 kakure kirishitan did so. Therest refused to abandon the faith theyhad protected through centuries ofpersecution. In some places the differ-ences between their beliefs and ortho-dox Christianity had become so greatthat the people could not recognize theoriginal connection.

For those kirishitan who becameCatholics, missioners built churches intheir villages and began the work ofteaching them the actual faith of theirancestors.

Today, the descendants of thekakure kirishitan still form the core ofthe Catholic Church in Nagasaki. Theyare proud to be descendants of menand women who remained faithful inspite of persecution, even though theirbeliefs had strayed from true Catholi-cism.

Because of that history of perse-cution, their Catholicism has had adifferent emphasis from that of peoplein other parts of Japan. Until recently, ithas been more traditional than theChurch in the rest of the country, withan emphasis upon keeping the faithand passing it on to the next genera-tion, a legacy of their ancestors’ faith-fulness.

However, lately the Church de-scended from the kakure kirishitan haschanged. From a Church that keepsthe faith it is becoming one that sharesthe faith. These Catholics revere their

(Contd.. from p. 3) ancestors who kept at least somememory of the faith but they are dedi-cated to deepening their understand-ing of that faith for the sake of missiontoday. They have come out of hiding.

The Church at large has some-thing to learn from the Nagasaki Catho-lics. We have come out of a period ofdecades in which "keeping the faith"was given priority over sharing our faith. We were in danger of becoming aclosed community of the elect, pro-tected from the ways of the world.

Now, Pope Francis is calling us toproclaim Evangelii Gaudium, the Joyof the Gospel. And that proclamation isnot simply the name of a papal docu-ment. It is the definition of the Church. We, like the Catholics of Nagasaki, must now focus on the proclamation ofthe fact that God’s love is stronger thansin, stronger than persecution, stron-ger than death.

It is time to come out of hiding andinto the open with faithfulness to eachother and to the Lord.

The Bhartiya Janata govern-ment even after absolutemajority in the Lok Sabha, falls to its knees to have theirbills passed in the RajyaSabha before the opposition.

The entire opposition hasmade up its mind to createproblems for the Prime Min-

ister, Mr. Narendra Modi. Modi'snine months honeymoon periodhas come to an end. Arun Jately'sbudget failed miserably to satisfycommon man's simpleasperations. All tall claims of BJPcould not be fulfilled. Inflation ratedid not come down after Jately'sbudget. There is absolutely nohope to bring back black moneyfrom Switzerland, Singapore,Dubai, Germany or France. The BJPparty supremo Amit Shah himself cat-egorically dismissed even the remotepossibility to accredit Rs.15 lacs in the back ac-count of every poor per-son of India. The Article370 can not be removedfrom Kashmir. Is it pos-sible? The BJP rulers, during the heated ex-changes in the Parlia-ment, answered in nega-tive. The Hindi fundamen-talists can not be satis-fied. Is it ever possibleunder the present circum-stances, to build Ramtemple in Ayodhya? Gen-erations of Dr. PravinTogadiya and MohanBhagwat will go on ask-ing endless questions onthe Ram Temple in Ayodhya... Thecoming generations may not be inter-ested in the temple issue... Is the cross-border firing from Pakistan over? HasChina stopped entering into our bor-ders? The startling reality is, India has

started to have talks with Pakistan. Thenumber of people and soldiers died inPak firing is far bigger in the last nine

months of Modi rule. TheChinese president who saton the same swing with Modion the river front of theSabarmati river has seriousobjections if Modi goes toArunachal! Modi rushed tothe airport, not caring for pro-tocol to welcome Obama. Themoment Obama got an op-portunity, he gave tips onsecularism to India. Once, back to the U.S., Obamasanctioned millions of dollarsto Pakistan.

These and countlessother things have goneagainst Modi. This is thehardcore reality of politics. The U.S. policy towards Paki-

stan and Chinese policy towardsIslamabad can not be changed be itManmohan Singh or Modi in India. TheArticle 370 can not just be scrapped...and the temple at Ayodhya? Only Ramcan tell!! Modi wants Land Reformation

Bill, Insurance Bill, Citizenship(Amendment) Motor Vehicles(Amendment), Coal Mines(Amendment) pass by the RajyaSabha. In all hurry Modi had allthose Bills issued by Ordinance. But Rajya Sabha will be in nomood to please Modi! Modi gov-ernment does not have majorityin Rajya Sabha and will find itimpossible. Modi was literaryangry in Rajya Sabha when belashed at the opposition in RajyaSabha. Modi's own BJP menremained absent in R. S. andthe thanks-motion to the Presi-dent backed by the BJP failed! The Bill backed by the Leftists(supported by Didi's party) hadto be accepted by Modi. Modiwas humiliated and there wasno way but to accept the bitter

doze. Modi knows it very well that thecoming four years will not be a cakewalk. Modi on his part has alreadystarted those steps which can help himin future. His visit to Sharad Pawar'shometown, presence at Mulayam'sgrand son's wedding and his hand-shake with Mukti Mohammed and hisdaughter Mehebooba Mukti (inspiteSangh, RSS and VHP protests) in Kash-mir is not for nothing. He wishes sup-port in Rajya Sabha from all these ...

The nine months of Modi rule hasdefinitely created an impression thatModi is anti poor, anti farmers, and prorich, the pre-session in the Parliamentsaw some senior BJP members absentin the House. Modi was furious but ....but ... the honeymoon comes to anend. Modi knows very well that thedays to come will bring endless hurdles, problems and blocks. Anna Hazare'smovement may leave him sleepless..growing inflation may leave him help-less.... Graceful survival will be a daydream...

Meanwhile, the common man willhave no solace. The is the fact.

The life of this I.A.S. officer hasfired the imagination of the youth, theaspirations of Modern India. He stoodfor the three Es —Education, Energy,Exposing Evil.

Education [He was an alumnus ofthe University of Agricultural Sciencesand qualified for a rank in the competi-tive I.A.S. Exam] He exhibited Energy[He was young with new ideas, fear-lessly going about his job of reigning inthe land mafia and builders, loved bythose who worked with him and thecommon man] He Exposed Evil.

He tackled the three problems thepresent government has high-lighted— Keep India Clean, Corruption andBlack Money. He won the hearts andminds of the people of Kolar where hewas the Deputy Commissioner.TheSolid Waste Management System heintroduced in Kolar, making it a gar-bage free town, is a model which canbe adopted across the country. Thecharacteristics of the system are fullresource recovery, cost effective, sus-tainable and humane. The system paysfor dry waste, allows for compostingand incineration of sanitary waste byhospitals. In the field of Corruption hewas able to stop the corrupt practicesof the sand mafia and confiscate sandillegally mined. In his current appoint-ment as Additional Commissioner ofCommercial Taxes [Enforcement] Hewas able to recover taxes from build-

ers, which according to media reportsin 5 months range from Rs 106 to 400crores. On building constructions thereis a Work Contract Tax [W.C.T.] of 14.5% of the value of the apartment, whichwas not being collected or not beingcollected in full. He had targeted 300such constructions where taxes wereto be collected based on their ownfigures and requirements of water andelectricity.

The appeal that such an officerhas can be seen from the fact that Kolarshut down and roads were blocked onhearing of his death. The estimates ofthe clamor on the social media for animpartial inquiry range from 200,000 toone million signatures. The I.A.S. Offic-ers’ Association has also sent in a pe-tition for an impartial inquiry, signifi-cant as high ranking officers have comeout in the open against decisions of thegovernment. The AAP identified by itssignature white caps were amongstthe first to lead the agitation with otherpolitical parties not wanting to be leftout and joining in to get mileage andcoverage.

The death and subsequent agita-tion will have been in vain if we don’ttake heed of the messages that theybring out loud and clear

1. All political parties should continuethe work started by Ravi — SolidWaste Management, elimination of

corruption and unearthing blackmoney. The plan he had drawn upto tackle the housing complexes inBangalore and thereafter in otherparts of Karnataka should be pur-sued by the Government and theCongress Party instead of makingan issue of whether it should be aCID or CBI inquiry into the causesof death. As the family has said,“What does it matter? It won’t bringhim back.”

2. If his death was a result of suicide, society must learn to accept thateven good people have their faultsand failings, are subject to depres-sion and can succumb to intensepressure. Human weaknessesmust be understood andaccepted.Society must identify andsupport such officers, who are of-ten alone and unrecognized.

3. There is a need for transformationpolitics which will resist politicalinterference, vested interests andpersonal gain. Here is whereemerging movements like theAamAadmi Party can play a deci-sive role. Older parties should alsotake a cue and change to meet theaspirations of the people seeingthe spontaneous and overwhelm-ing response that one death hasevoked

The reported death of a 36 year old I.A.S.officer of the 2009 batch has shaken thenation. He was found hanging from the ceil-

ing fan in his apartment. Speculations are rife as tothe cause of death — murder or suicide. While thepreliminary investigations indicate suicide, thosewho knew the officer say a person, with his strongwill and positive thinking, wouldn’t opt for this routeto end his problems. The motives for murder aremore compelling than financial and personal rea-sons. He had gone after the sand mafia and build-ing tycoons to stop corruption and evasion of taxes. The public mood is for an impartial CBI inquiry intothe circumstances surrounding his death.

Christian Bashing – enough is enough !

I think we have had enough of this“christian bashing” from the fascist/fundamentalist forces in the countryand we need to get our act together. This mindless attack on christianchurches and institutions must stop -the rape of the 71 year nun was a thelast straw. The orgy of violence hasnow reached the outskirts of our city ofBombay - the attack on St. GeorgeChurch at New Panvel in the early hoursof Saturday (21st March) was yet an-other cowardly act.

It was encouraging to see theArchbishop of Bombay, CardinalOswald Gracias himself leading amorcha in South Mumbai to protestagainst the attack on christians. Weneed to move forward from here. Weneed to keep diplomacy aside for themoment and take some - desperatesituations call for drastic measures tocounter these attacks. Apart fromshutting down all christian schoolsacross the country for some time, weneed to use our schools to tell thesefascist/fundamentalist forces that“enough is enough”. A large numberof ‘non-christians’ are studying inour schools - we can ask their par-ents to come out onto the streets andprotest alongwith the christians. Ifthe large majority do not subscribe tothe programme undertaken by thesecommunalist organizations, then theyshould have the guts to speak up. Weneed to tell these organizations thatthey are cowards. This should sendout a strong signal to the governmentthat we cannot be taken for a rideanymore. The government both at

the Centre and the States have to act- NOW !

LENT – a ‘SPRING’throughout the Year

As we conclude Lent’ allow me toexercise the word L.E.N.T. furtherthrough the Scripture of Christ!

L-Learn- (Cultivate Gentleness andHumility): “Take My yoke upon you,and ‘learn’ from Me; for I AM gentleand humble of heart, and you willfind rest for your souls” (Matthew,11:29).

E- Endure – (Patience): “This saying istrue: If we have died with Him, wewill also live with Him; if we ‘endure’,we will also reign with Him” (2 Timo-thy, 2:11-12).

N-Nailing – (Negative thoughts, foullanguage and dishonest acts):“Erasing the record that stoodagainst us with its legal demands,He set aside this by ‘nailing’ it to theCross” (Colosians, 2:14).

T-Trust (Motif of ‘Divine Mercy’ – “JesusI Trust in You!’): “Do not let yourhearts be troubled; ‘trust’ in Godand ‘trust’ also in Me” John 14:1 –New Community Bible).

Not only during lencten = ‘spring’, butcontinuously Jesus offers us his Sa-maritan children ‘living water’, the giftof the Holy Spirit! “The water that I shallgive will become a ‘spring of water’gushing up to eternal life” (John, 4:14).

Development orDistruction?

The Concerned Citizens Tribunalcharacterised the use of rape as "Aninstrument for the subjugation and hu-miliation of a community." It startedwith the attacks on Christian churchesand places of worship in Delhi.Emboldened by their success, the RSSlaunched their 'ghar wapsi' programme.Chief Mohan Bhagwat added fuel tothe communal fire with his baselessdiatribe against Mother Teresa. Andnow our peace loving community, which forms only 2% of the Indian popu-lation and which has contributed somuch in the fields of education andhealth care, is faced with this inhuman, degraded, diabolical act of the gangrape of a 71 year old nun.

The perpetrators of this horren-dous, shocking act must be brought tobook speedily. It is not only the Chris-tian community but the entire Indiansociety that will suffer if such crimesagainst women and minorities go un-checked.

One of the parameters for judginga healthy, thriving society is how ittreats its minorities. When a minoritycommunity is under siege, it signalsthe decline of a society. It signals thespread of a deadly disease which canonly have disastrous consequencesfor the entire society once it spreads itstentacles far and wide. It signals asociety where might is right and wherethe law does not have any control onthe members of a society. It signals thereign of chaos and the unleashing ofdestructive forces.

It is reassuring that, at these timesof siege, our non-Christian brethrenare also raising their voices at the tar-geting of minorities. Thank God fortheir support.

The much touted 'development' isnot the main parameter of the health ofa society. Rather, it is society's ability toinclude its minorities in working to-wards a better tomorrow. United westand. Divided we fall.

power for Corruption Free Good Gov-ernance. Was it the mistake, to take hisassurances at Face Value? …..HisSilence over current happenings in thecountry, make us Believe so……..

The RSS has made it clear thatthey do not recognize Christians andMuslims as Indians and Modi has notonly made no effort to control or deac-tivate the Sangh Parivar which is themain force behind the campaignagainst Muslims and Christians, by notnaming and shaming them, he is en-couraging them.

After more than hundred days inoffice what is most noticeable aboutthis government is their going all out toimpose their brand of Hinduism whichmakes them intolerant to other reli-gions

So many voices seem to be com-ing out in condemnation of activities ofproponent of extreme Hinduvta, theRSS. Sooner Mr. Modi realizes this, better it is for his Government. BJP hasnot won the elections because RSS

supported it (Only 31% of Votes Polled)but the entire right thinking population, including Christians and Muslims, ig-noring its communal agenda, voted forBJP. They voted for Mr. Modi’s Call forGOOD GOVERNANCE, which seemsto have been put in cold storage, afterwinning the election

Instead of the Big Bang changeand dramatic transformational reformswe are witnessing the spreading ofcommunal divide as the elected repre-sentatives are staunch believers of aparticular brand of Hinduism called‘Hinduvta’ which make them intolerantto other religions as well as to the otherbranches of Hinduism. They have nowstarted imposing their Hinduvta belief.

Since December 2014 the VHPand RSS have been conducting re-conversion ceremonies of Christiansto Hindus for their ghar wapsi (home-comings) campaign, and attacks onChristian institutions are becomingmore frequent.

These extremists are emboldened

because they expect Christians not toreact. After all, Christians in India aregenerally viewed as a peace-lovingcommunity. Christians don’t attackHindu temples, bomb Hindu malls orrape Hindu women.

Human relationships are basedon trust. This kind of spreading com-munal hatred and guarding leads tosuppressing of emotions and leads topsychological problems like anxietyand stress since a person like this wouldalways be on the edge inside. Theinability to trust people starts telling onhealth

The ongoing communal violenceis a matter of great national shame, especially in our country that has ahistory of tolerance. Worse still, most ofit is politically motivated. According tomedia reports, much of it stems fromfringe elements of Hindu organizationssuch as the Bajrang Dal, Vishva HinduParishad, and Rashtriya SwayamsevakSangh. They’re doing this to avengeChristian missionaries and their alleged`aggressive conversion drives’ whichthey think have forced good Hindus tocovert.

Forced conversions? Look at ourpopulation figure. Does it look like we’rerunning out of Hindus? Read our law.Article 25 of the Indian Constitutionguarantees freedom of religion. Con-version is an individual choice. If aperson wants to convert their religion, their shoes, their refrigerator, it is theirchoice. The thoughts that keep me awake at nightand perhaps burning inside every Indianis that the huge mandate India gave was

for dramatic, discontinuous and transformationalchange. It was not for spreading communalismor incrementalism, it was not for doing what wasbeing done earlier a little better or a little different. It was for Big Bang change and dramatic trans-formational reforms. India waits, with bated breathand unconcealed hope.

ing their mat or crossing their heart orringing a bell.

Why should the Bhagwad Gita orany sacred book get designated asnational scripture? Why does one haveto learn Sanskrit? Why should they banbeef or ban non-vegetarian food? Isbeef eating or non vegetarian food al-lowed for Hindus?

With self proclaimed Hindu na-tionalists assuming the right to decidewho is a Hindu, the question arises:what does it really mean to be Hindu? There is also a brand in Hinduism thatis promoted by the International Soci-ety for Krishna Consciousness that hasbrought in cultural Hindusim that insiston the particular manner of living, cloth-ing, food, language and so on and inimposing these belief the Hindu na-tionalist in the government are workingon bring uniformity in Hinduism, justlike the Christians and Muslims have.

Hindu Scholars say that it is im-possible to bring uniformity in Hindu-ism. The Shakhas and branches are alldifferent. In Hinduism, there is no onecentral book and no one specific cul-ture. Therefore those who are trying tobring unification by banning certaineatables and promoting a certain wayof living in the name of Hinduism aredoing injustice to the very structure ofHinduism. I believe that they are igno-rant of what their religion preaches. They are simply going against theirown religious scriptures. Any politicalparty that seeks to represent the Hinduway needs to celebrate its diversityrather than limit it. They need to refer tothe Vedas

Manusmriti – Chapter 5 /verse 30 says

– It is not sinful to eat meat ofeatable animal, for God has cre-ated both the eaters and the eat-ables.

Aapastanba – Grishsutram (1/3/10)says

– The cow should be slaughteredon the arrival of a guest, on theoccasion of ‘Shraaddha’ of ances-tors and on the occasion of a mar-riage.

Rigveda – (10/85/13) declares

– ‘on the occasion of a girls mar-riage oxen and cows are slaugh-tered’

Rigveda (6/17/1) says

– Indra used to eat the meat of cow, calf, horse and buffalo

Vashishta Dharmasutra (11/34) says

– If a Brahmin refuses to eat themeat offered to him on the occa-sion of ‘Shraadda’ he goes to hell

Hinduism great propagator SwamiVivekaanand said thus

– You will be surprised to know thataccording to ancient Hindu rite andrituals, a man cannot be a goodHindu who does not eat beef

– (the complete works of SwamiVivekaanand vol : 3/5/36)

Although India is an amazingcountry the Hindu nationalists whogovern our country have more respectfor cows than for women and childrenand so they ensure that cows are moreprotected than women and children.

The hate campaigns against theChristian community and the Christianfaith by fundamentalist and extremistreligious organizations in the past pre-ceded large scale violence against theChristians community, presently thehostilities have increased.

How are we to understand themeaning of this manufactured hatredtowards a community that is inherentlyapolitical and innately pacifist? As arule, if a phenomenon is not explicableby facts, its explanation needs to besought in psychology.

The key to the current scenario

lies in competitive conversions. Hindu-ism is a birth-based, non-missionaryreligion. The impetus to convert is whatit has imitated from Christian and Mus-lim faiths. The truth about ghar wapsi isthat it is an imitation of the missionaryaspect of Semitic faiths. It is Hinduismimitating Christianity and Islam.

Here we have a classic illustrationof the Gerardian psychology of imita-tion. Imitation begins on a note of admi-ration. This leads to a stage in whichthe imitator (or `disciple' in mimeticpsychology) wants to be like the imi-tated (the ̀ mentor'). But this is only anintermediary stage. Soon, the spirit ofimitation gets infected by the acquisi-tive spirit. So imitation degeneratesinto competition. The matrix of rivalrydistorts the object imitated, the mentor. The disciple comes under the psycho-logical need to caricature andcriminalize the mentor.

At this stage the disciple intro-duces an extraneous element into theequation to ensure his outright victoryin the competition. It could be statepower, numerical or financial advan-tage or the ability to intimidate anddisable the mentor. So, violence is re-sorted to.

This is what, in essence, the cur-rent situation means. And it calls forintrospection by both sides. Religion isnot a domain for head-hunting. Thepurpose of religion is to refine and toennoble. What little i know of conver-sions and re-conversions makes mewonder if such projects are wholly freefrom ulterior motives. Deceit, whichanimates ulteriority, is poison to thespiritual.

The self-appointed defenders ofGod - trying to outdo each other -belong to the theatre of the absurd andnot to the order of religion or of publicdecency.

Once again mindsets intrude.Rather than engaging with secularism, the Hindu nationalist that are in thegovernment emphasis is communal-ism and promoting their brand of Hin-duism and pretending that minoritiesdo not exist in the name of avoidingshame and protecting honor.

As long as Hinduvita fights againstothers - Muslims, Christians, the other

minorities, atheists and does not en-gage in self criticism and recognizesthat its problem is within, we all lose.Without it, Hinduvita will be increas-ingly involved in wars among them-selves.

This is the opportunity for Mr.Narendra Modi’s BJP to snap the shack-les of RSS and free itself to govern thecountry blissfully; rather than sink withRSS as the trend suggests.

Frankly none of us believe thatthis has happened and is still happen-ing in spite of the assurance given bythis government to the minorities’ whohave tremendous talent and are con-tributing tremendously to the nation.

In Mumbai the Human Chain forPeace and harmony was organized toexpress our solidarity in protest of divi-sive politics, hate speeches, vandal-ism of our Churches & communaliza-tion by the Sangh Parivar of the coun-try. The human chain proclaimed themessage “we are one” Was this protestor to demand something from the gov-ernment baffled many. Many ques-tioned why were the people from all theChurches in Mumbai called then? Toshow solidarity with the perpetrators ofthe crime? To embrace them into Catho-lic brotherhood? No wonder Christiansare attacked again and again and evenraped, nuns not excepted! For theyknow Christians in India do not protest, cannot protect themselves and there-fore turn the other cheek.

If the criminals are not brought tobook, then Christians will always besoft targets and there would be numer-ous REPEAT of such ghastly acts. Ex-emplary punishment must be meted

out to act as a DETERRENT. Sadly theorganizers DO NOT DEMAND this. Theysing, play the Guitar and the violin andburnt candles, much to the amuse-ment of future culprits, the police andthe political establishment to plan outmore assault and possibly rapes! Hadit happened to our other minority com-munity, one can imagine what wouldhave happened.

Christianity is praised for its powerof forgiveness and its conviction inconversion of the heart! In the mean-time, more such incidents of arson andrape will continue and we will keep ontaking out Unity Rallies, sing songs, burn more candles and pray for con-version of the criminals’ heart! What aquixotic faith!

What we are not realizing is thiskind of heinous crime can take placeanywhere. These are not minority-re-lated per se. Instead of calling ProtestRallies, the Indian Church both at thelocal and national levels must seriouslydeliberate on strategies to beef up oursecurity system and strengthen our-selves, by taking help of retired Chris-tian IPS officers and other capable com-munity people without blindly depend-ing on the government.

On the other hand the personalrelationship between leaders of differ-ent religions with the political parties iscritical to advancing shared causes. We see this in the stories about Win-ston Churchill living at the White houseduring World War II, sometimes fordays at a time. A leader sees greatnessin other people; you can’t be much of aleader if all you see is yourself. Are ourreligious leaders prepared to go all outto do so?

Off The Field Double TonWith “Secular”

This piece has a very special sig-nificance for me personally [and toSecular Citizen as well] since it is amilestone of sorts. This is my 200th

contribution to “Views on News”. Theinceptive article was published wayback in mid-August 2007, almost eightyears ago, when I assured Mr LawrenceCoelho, the Editor that I will keep thecolumn going. That was the deal whichI have honoured fortnight after fort-night, without any default.

In this long and interesting jour-ney, I have tried to encompass as manysubjects as possible ranging from reli-gion to social and economic issues. For the past couple of years or two, Ihave laid emphasis on political issuesin the context of rising saffron attackson Christians either overtly or covertly. This development has impacted theChristian community and its Churches.“The community feels it is under seizeand alienated” says Julius Rebello in arecent interview. Even a tough cop likehim sounds perturbed and helpless. That the ruling BJP has outsourced itsHindutava agenda, through its affili-ates and other fringe elements inimicalto the Christian community, is a truism.Christians and Muslims have been atthe receiving end of this well choreo-graphed sinister move. The latestevents in Haryana and West Bengalare frightening; now it is Navi Mumbai. For the peace loving Christian commu-nity, registering its protests throughsilent processions and to some extent, through the medium of writing, are theonly two viable options available.Whether this is a virtue or weakness willalways remain a debatable point.

Apart from this column, I did con-tribute intermittently, a number of fulllength articles since 2005, which werefront-paged, on issues which I felt hadan impact on society and religion. Ihave even commented fearlessly onthe property disputes of the Church ingeneral terms; the archaic laws whichare still operative; rules being differentto different people in different countriesetc. I have also commented on thequestionable attitude of certain Priestsas well as some rustic elements amongthe laity, without naming any of them. Many readers may not have agreedwith my views or my way of writing –

calling spade a spade. But these havebeen my views which I have tried toarticulate as succinctly as possible.Sometimes one has to be forthright tosend the right message.

When I started contributing to Secu-lar it was a small publication with hardlyany original articles. Much to the sur-prise of the critics, today, the Editor hasthe luxury of choice – he can choose andpublish what he wants. The number oforiginal articles has increased signifi-cantly. Some of the articles, comingfrom well known Christian personalities, are very well written. Secular Citizen hasgrown from strength to strength. I amglad I have been a small part of thisgrowth story. The publishers thought itappropriate to confer on me the “TheWriter of the Year - 2011” award, at apublic function in 2012. It was a hugehonour which I will always cherish. Infact it was Freddy Mendonca of Dimen-sions, who first suggested in 2005 that Istart writing for Secular exactly a de-cade ago.

Looking back, it gives me a senseof fulfillment that my articles werewell appreciated by readers includingthe very popular Bishop Bosco Penha. When I had the opportunity of meet-ing him at the local Church, he appre-ciated my articles saying he alwayswanted to meet me to know who I was. That was some time back. Specialwords of appreciation came from noneother than Mr George Menezes for myarticle on “A Headless Community”.He was gracias enough to email mesaying “We have met socially but didnot realize you had the gift of writing.Do keep writing. Your piece on theLeadership of our community raisesimportant questions…some of the an-swers will shame the community”. Heeven volunteered to facilitate a semi-nar to discuss the questions raised byme. This was most satisfying.

Judicial MasterstrokeIn early February this year, the Delhi

High Court, was considering death pen-alty in the famous 2002 Nitish Katariamurder case. While rejecting the pros-ecution plea for sending the two ac-cused to the gallows, the Court enhancedlife sentences on both the accused by

another five years – to 30 and 25 yearsrespectively with no remission. Thismeans that both accused Vikas Yadavand his cousin will have to actuallycomplete their terms.

The High Court took a very seri-ous view of the fact that Vikas Yadav, during his detention in the jail, was ableto pull the right strings and come out ofthe jail multiple times on ‘medical’grounds. The High Court ordered thatthe authorities should calculate the to-tal number of days that he has re-mained out of the jail and add thosedays to his prison term. This means thatif he has managed to remain out of jailfor a total number of say 100 days, hewill have to undergo a prison term of 30years and 100 days. People undergo-ing prison terms will henceforth onlyask for ‘leave’ for really genuine rea-sons.

What is assuring in the above caseis that for the first time the Court hastaken a very serious view of how peoplewith influence have been able to mis-use the facilities available under thelaw, actually for genuine reasons. Inci-dentally, Vikas is the son of D.P. Yadava powerful politician with a dubioustrack record. We have seen regularlythat VVIPs facing prison terms havebeen falling ‘ill’ very often necessitatingtheir shifting to premier medical hospi-tals for ‘treatment’ with five star perks.

We will soon witness a change –after this landmark judgment, no in-fluential prisoner will fall ill that eas-ily. Their health will improve dramati-cally since they would want to finishtheir prison terms quickly. It will benice if the Courts also look at VVIPsabsconding or going into hiding [toapply for anticipatory bail] when theyface Police action. Courts shouldrefuse to entertain such applicationsand insist on their first surrenderingbefore the police. Some of them, in-cluding politicians, actors, IAS, IRSIPS etc, take recourse to such tac-tics. This must STOP.

Much has been said andequally much is being written with regard to the un-

due harassment of those professingChristianity. Indeed, much will con-tinue to be said and written. However, the fact remains that little has beendone by way of concrete action on ourpart as believers. O yes, we’ve had arally in some corner of Azad Maidan, ahuman chain and things like that (ku-dos to the organizers!). But that’s aboutall. No new ideas seem to be forth-coming on how one could tackle theissue head-on.

The need to forgive does remain para-mount, given the importance of Lord’scommand to that effect. Yet,we also need to take into dueconsideration his own asser-tion: “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but ifwell, why strike me?” (John18:23) We need to officiallywrite to the top brass of theRSS-VHP combine, chal-lenging them to prove in courttheir baseless ‘conversion’ allegations.

Before I make my suggestions, onelittle clarification (from those con-cerned) please: Do we really need tohave two Episcopal Conferences inour country, i.e. the CONFERENCEOF CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF INDIAand the CATHOLIC BISHOPS CON-FERENCE OF INDIA? Won’t just onesuch body suffice, with itsPresidentship rotating among the threerites?

A few suggestions:

a) Establish a single Episcopal

Conference in the country, itspresidentship rotating amongthe three rites in alternate suc-cession whereby we have justone main leader of the Catho-lic Church in India represent-ing the entire Catholic com-munity in every respect

b) Mobilize the support of otherChristian denominations (par-ticularly other mainlinechurches) by having anothersuch body, comprising of allChristian Bishops in India,i.e. bishops of all Christian de-nominations, established

c) Re-consider our Inter-Faithdialogue policy. We need toidentify which Faith persuasionthe majority of rapists in gen-eral belong to and think twiceas regards the bonafides ofsuch a religion. Perhaps rapeit is part of the faith-ideology ofthe religion concerned – some-thing that we may have eithermissed or overlooked. After all, after all the goody-good thingswe’ve been saying about thevalues evident in other reli-gions, how many of those fromother faiths who’ve been in-volved in the exercize openlycondemned what’s going onoffer the necessary support?

d) Have an open confrontationwith the government/s con-cerned, even if it means takingthe matter to court

e) Have close networking among

clergy and religious rightacross the length and breadthof the country whereby thesituation is constantly jointlymonitored and assessed, news instantly shared andviews sought and obtainedboth among themselves andwith the world around in termsof computing with ideas andpossible solutions

f) Liase closely with the Chris-tian Chamber/s of Commercein India

g) Call for a day’s protest closureof all Christian institutions(both educational and other-wise) and Christian busi-nesses

h) Stop our Azad Maidan cornerrallies and, instead, holdmorchas across busy publicthroughfares in the country atpeak-hours rather than a Sat-urday evening walk downsome causeway or boulevard

i) Demand ‘castration’, ratherthan the death penalty, for allrapists proven guilty

I think it’s been quite a while sincewe’ve been saying ‘enough is enough’,considering that for the brutes con-cerned nothing is enough but is, rather,‘yeh dil mange more’. From rapingsupposedly scantily-clad girls they’venow graduated to raping an old nun.How much longer are we going to wait– until some young priest issodomized?

New Delhi: Concerned over the grow-ing attacks on the Christian commu-nity across India, 19 Christian MPs onFriday met here and chalked out astrategy to counter these attacks andproject the community's immensecontribution to the nation.

The parliamentarians also ex-pressed concern about continuing at-tacks on minorities and hoped thatthe assurances given by the PrimeMinister Narendra Modi would behonoured.

"The parliamentarians were ofthe view that the majority communityis not communal but it is only a minus-cule minority amongst the majoritycommunity which is so," a press com-munique stated.

Attention should be focussed onthe work done by the Christian com-munity that runs schools, colleges, hospitals, old age homes, and or-phanages across the country and wasdeeply involved in the uplift of societyas a whole, the statement said

The meeting also decided that acommon agenda paper would be pre-pared and would be circulatedamongst the larger Christian commu-nity with the aim of bringing all de-nominations under a single banner.

Panajim — RSS leader MohanBhagwat’s comments about MotherTeresa have created yet another stormwith many condemning his calling themission work as a conversion.

Earlier this week, RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaderMohan Bhagwat’s comment sayingthe real motive behind Mother Teresa’smissionary work was to convert peopleinto Christians generated anger amongmany groups of people. BJP spokes-person Meenakshi Lekhi claimed thatMother Teresa had admitted in an in-terview that her job was to bring peopleto the fold of Christianity.

Actress Dia Mirza took to Twitterto express her rage tweeting, “Shameon you Meenakshi Lekhi you contortpersonal faith/work to validate a state-ment that should be condemned.”

Goa’s politicians took no time incondemning the statement and thegeneral consensus is against the com-ment while many point to the RSS as aproblem making organisation all to-gether.

Panjim based advocateThalmann Pradeep Pereira says thecomment stems from the government’sulterior motive. “A very provocativestatement deliberately designed tokeep the whole Nation discussingabout Mother Teresa who is in heaven, while Prime Minister Narendra Modiquietly grabs the futile agriculturallands of the Poor Farmers and handsthem over to the Big Corporates hereon Earth,” he says.

Fr. Victor Ferrao, priest, Christiantheologist and dean at Rachol Semi-nary says, “What the RSS is trying todo here is attempting to disqualify thelove and service shown by MotherTeresa to humanity for people whoneed it. They are trying to degrade it.

(Contd.. on p. 18)

The year 2014 was celebrated asthe ‘Year of the Eucharist’ in ourArchdiocese of Bombay, with the

theme: ‘I am Catholic, I am alive’! It wasin commemoration of the golden jubi-lee of the 38th International EucharisticCongress held in 1964.

At the Eucharistic rally, our be-loved Oswald Cardinal Gracias hadrecounted the immense Catholic con-tribution to education, healthcare andsocial outreach; and exhorted the laityto do more for the poor and themarginalized.

These ‘corporal works of mercy’incorporate the social message of theDivine Mercy; and as the Catechism ofthe Catholic Church commends: “TheEucharist commits us to the poor”(1397). Many parishes have included2015 as the ‘Year of the Eucharist andthe Family’!

Earlier, John Paul 11, the MercyPope in his encyclical, Dives in Miseri-cordia (Rich in Mercy) elaborated:“Mercy is love’s second name … TheChurch lives an authentic life when sheprofesses and proclaims mercy – themost stupendous attribute of the Cre-ator and of the Redeemer – and whenshe brings people close to the sourceof the Savior’s mercy, of which she isthe trustee and the dispenser, espe-cially through the Sacraments of theEucharist and Reconciliation” (13).

So let us contemplate the intimateassociation between the Eucharist andthe Divine Mercy, which peaks on the‘Feast of Divine Mercy’ – 2nd Sunday ofEaster (12th Apr, 2015).

Divine Mercy in my soul: At Jesus’command, St Faustina, the apostle ofDivine Mercy maintained the above Di-ary – (D), a spiritual classic with 1828entries. Several times in her Diary shewrites of seeing the red and pale raysemerging not from the Image, but fromthe Sacred Host (D:441). So too, withthe eyes of faith we should visualize inevery consecrated Host the mercifulsavior pouring Himself out as a fountainof mercy for us.

“O what awesome mysteries takeplace during Mass! … Only His DivineLove could permit that such a gift be

provided for us … this fountain of lifegushing forth with such sweetness andpower (D:914). All the good that is in meis due to Holy Communion (D:1392).Herein lies the whole secret of my sanc-tity (D:1489). One thing alone sustainsme, and that is Holy Communion. Fromit I draw all my strength; in it is all mycomfort … Jesus concealed in the Hostis everything to me … I would not knowhow to give glory to God if I did not havethe Eucharist in my heart” (D:1037).

“O Blessed Host”: St Faustinacomposed this animating life-givinglitany of 30 stanzas especially dedi-cated to poor sinners. For example, shemerges the Eucharist—O Blessed Hostand the Divine Mercy as: Testamentand proof of the of the infinite mercy ofthe Father, Son and Holy Spirit; purestlove which blazes forth from the bosomof the Father; sweet sentiments thatpours from the Sacred Heart of Jesus;medicine for all our infirmities; hope insufferings, adversities of life, in dark-ness and in storms and at the hour ofdeath; hope in the toil and monotony ofeveryday life; against the ravages of theenemy and the gates of hell … (D: 356).Thus, the Divine Mercy crowned withthe Blessed Eucharist galvanizes com-munities to perform the spiritual andphysical deeds of mercy!

Feast of Mercy: The Eucharist iscentral to the Divine Mercy devotion –the Image, the Chaplet, and the Feastare all essentially Eucharistic! The ‘Feastof Mercy’ holds the first and foremostplace. In all there are 14 revelationsconcerning the required Feast: “ I de-

sire that the ‘Feast of Mercy’ be a refugeand a shelter for all souls, and espe-cially for poor sinners. On that day thevery depths of My tender mercy areopen. I pour out a whole ocean ofgraces upon those souls who approachthe fount of My mercy. The soul that willgo to Confession and receive HolyCommunion shall obtain complete for-giveness of sins and punishment … It ismy desire that the Feast be solemnlycelebrated on the first Sunday afterEaster” (D:699).

Woman of the Eucharist: In hisencyclical, ‘Rich in Mercy’, Pope JohnPaul refers to Mary as “the ‘mother ofmercy’! … She is the one who has thedeepest understanding of God’s mercy… Called in a special way to share herSon’s mission to reveal His love, shecontinues to proclaim ‘His mercy fromgeneration to generation’ – Luke, 1:50(9)”.

In my apostolic letter, RosariumVirginia Mariae, I pointed to the blessedVirgin Mary as our teacher in contem-plating Christ’s face, and among the‘mysteries of light’ I included the ‘Insti-tution of the Eucharist’! Mary guides thefaithful towards the Most Holy Sacra-ment, because she herself has a pro-found relationship with the BlessedEucharist … At the school of Mary –‘Woman of the Eucharist’ – “Blessed isshe who believed” – Luke, 1:45 (Ecclesiade Eucharistica , 53).

The Bread of life: “ I (Jesus) wantto tell you that eternal life must beginhere on earth through Holly Commun-ion. Each Holy Communion makes youmore capable of communing with Godthroughout eternity (D:811). Thestrength by which you bear sufferingcomes from frequent Holy Commun-ion. So approach this fountain of mercyoften, to draw with the vessel of trustwhatever you need” (D:1487).

Jesus confirms the above life-giv-ing words in the Diary in His famousdiscourse on the ‘Bread from heaven’ –“ I AM the ‘Bread of life’! … I AM theliving Bread that came down fromheaven. Whoever eats of this Bread willlive forever; and the Bread that I will give

before the awesome great day of theLord the Day Judgment there’s goingto be a moon that the sun shall beturned into darkness and the “MOONINTO BLOOD” before the great andterrible day of the Lord come “The Sunwill be turned into darkness, and themoon into blood, before the day ofYahweh dawns, that great terribleday”.(Joel 3:4-5).

Most people are not aware that everytime historically where there is what’sknown as a tetrad. A tetrad are 4 BloodMoons in a row. Every time there hasbeen a tetrad on biblical feasts not onthe feast which Christian celebrate, butI mean on biblical feasts somethingsignificant has happened in the past tochange the whole world

A blood moon tetrad has landedon the biblical feast 8 times in the last2000 years. These events happened inApril- September and October on thefeast of the Passover and Tabernaclesonly

In 70 A.D when the Roman Gen-eral Titus destroyed the Temple andchanged the name of Israel to Pales-tine the solar lunar eclipse all over thebiblical holiday and on APRIL 3RD33A.D WHEN JESUS CHRIST WASCRUCIFIED ON CALVARY SOLARECLIPSE”.

It was at the 3rd hour of the day onApril 3rd 33A.D when the Roman sol-diers bound Jesus to the Cross onCalvary at 0900hrs and at that verymoment the High Priest bound the lambto the altar and sang Psalms 113- 118.Are you aware that Yahweh had in-spired David to write the funeral Psalms113-118 for His Son Jesus 1,000 years

As they were binding the lamband Jesus to the Cross the JewishHistorian Josephus records Two andhalf millions Jews were present inJerusalem. Jesus fulfilled the feast dayto the day and the hour.

Blood moons are a beautiful sight. These astronomical anomalies have

become a hot topic for both backyardastronomers and Christians who con-sider them prophetic signs. Are theblood moons sighs? Or are they simplyGod’s handiwork? A blood moon is atotal lunar eclipse, when Earth standsbetween the moon and sun. since Earthblocks the sun’s light, the only hue thatemerges through Earth’s atmosphereis red, casting a blood-red colour onthe moon.

Some Christians associate tetrads(fours) of blood moons with significantevents in Jewish history and argue thatsomething earth shattering will hap-pen to Israel during the current tetrad:April 2014 through September 2015.

The Lonely Blood Moon:Biblical prophecy certainly speaks

of a blood moon. The prophet Joelenvisioned it when he prophesied aboutthe “great and awesome day” of theLord: I will show wonders in the heav-ens and in the earth: blood and fire andpillars of smoke. The sun shall be turnedinto darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great andawesome day of the LORD.

Luke later quoted Joel in Acts2:20, and the apostle John used thesame prophecy in Revelation: “And themoon became like blood.” (6:12). Eachtime a blood moon is mentioned, it is inconjunction with other cosmic eventsoccurring simultaneously. So if a bibli-cal blood moon has occurred, weshould also expect to see a darkenedsun and only one blood moon, nottetrads. Furthermore, each writerpointed to the same future event.

After the Fact:Blood-moon-prophecy advocates

argue tetrads appeared during impor-tant events in Jewish history; the Jew-ish expulsions from Spain in 1492;Israel’s independence in 1948; and in1967, during the Six-Day War.

However, the first blood moon occurred

in April 1949, after Israel had alreadygained its independence in May 1948.Similarly, a tetrad appeared in 1493, ayear after the Jewish people were ex-pelled from Spain. If the blood moonsare signs, they should have occurredbefore those events. Consider, for in-stance, if you are driving down thehighway and see a sign for an exit afteryou pass it. That sign isn’t much help.(Likewise), the blood moon tetrad of1493 – 1494 cannot be a sign of whathappened… in 1492. This just doesn’tfit the definition of a sign.

The Biblical Blood Moon:Placing prophetic value on these

blood moons grabs our attention, butthe referenced events are random. Some involved a serious struggle butended in joy, like Israel’s independenceand the Six-Day War, while othersended only in sorrow, like the expul-sion from Spain.

Because there is only one biblical“blood moon,” and it will shine in theplace of a darkened sun and burned-out starts when the Lord judges thisworld. Until then, every blood moon isan example of God’s majestic handi-work. The first Blood Moon this year ison April 14th and the second BloodMoon is on September 28th 2015.

Marriage is the only schoolwhere you get the Certificate before you start.

It's also a school where you will nevergraduate.

It's a school without a break or a freeperiod.

It's a school where no one is allowedto drop out.

It's a school you will have to attendevery day of your life.

It's a school where there is no sickleave or holidays.

It's a school founded by God:1.On the foundation of love.2.The walls are made out of trust.3.The door made out of acceptance.4.The windows made out of under-

standing5.The furniture made out of blessings6.The roof made out of faith.

Be reminded that you are just astudent not the principal.God is the only Principal.Even in times of storms, don't be

unwise and run outside.Keep in mind that, this school is the

safest place to be.Never go to sleep before completing

your assignments for the day.Never forget the C-word... Communi-

cate.Communicate with your classmate

and with the Principal. If you find out something in your class-

mate (spouse) that you do not ap-

preciate.Remember your classmate is also

just a student not a graduate,God is not finished with him/her yet.So take it as a challenge and work on

it together.

Do not forget to study the HolyBook (the main textbook of thisschool).

Start each day with a sacred assem-bly and end it the same way. Some-times you will feel like not attend-ing classes, yet you have to.

When tempted to quit find courageand continue.

Some tests and exams may be toughbut remember

the Principal knows how much youcan bear and yet

it's a school better than any other.It's one of the best schools on earth;

joy, peace and happiness accom-pany each lesson of the day.

Different subjects are offered in thisschool, yet love is the major sub-ject.

After all the years of theorizing aboutit, now you have a chance to prac-tice it.

To be loved is a good thing, but to loveis the greatest privilege of them all.

Marriage is a place of love, so loveyour spouse.

More grace from God.

The School Called Marriage

In the movie, ‘El Caja’, a widow,Loise, faces emotional turmoil andhostility from the townspeople, afterthe death of her husband, Don Lucio. He was a cruel, corrupt, govern-ment official. During the burial for-malities, stories abounded abouthis amassed wealth, while his fam-ily lived in poverty.

Loise remembered his daily ven-eration of a picture of St. Dismas, the Good Thief on the Cross, whowas Pardoned and Welcomed toParadise by Jesus. (Luke 23:40 –43). As Loise removed the picture, she uncovered a hidden lockerwhich contained the stored wealth.

‘Son’ is also a homonym for ’Sun’,the spring equinox festival of‘Eostre’.

Like the Moon reflecting the Sunlight in our dark nights, the Resur-rection Glory was revealed to St.Dismas, when he sincerely turnedhis sinful life to Jesus the Son ofGod, Hanging on the Cross, an Eter-nal sacrifice for our sins.

Many of us have dark areas in ourlives where we face personal, fam-ily, financial and spiritual problems.

Like St. Dismas, let us welcome theEaster Glory of the Risen Christ intoour lives.

‘For the Foolishness of God is Wiserthan human wisdom, and the Weak-ness of God is Stronger than humanstrength.’

(1 Corinthians1:25)

People come in all shapes andsizes and have different personalities. Same is the case with in-

laws. Some are wonderful and someare not so wonderful, some might evenbe mean. And, there might come a timein your married life, when you feel thatthis wedded kinship is costing you yourmarriage.

Unhealthy relationship with your in-laws might prove to be a continuousdrain on you and may eventually affectyour marriage. So, we bring you here afew pointers that might be helpful, ifever, you have to face a tough time withyour in-laws.

Here are guidelines to build better rela-tion with your in-laws:

Little bit of tension is considerednormalThe way you have lived with your par-ents may not agree with your in-laws.But, do not pick up a fight with thembecause of these differences. No twoindividuals see things from the sameperspective. And, maybe, over a pe-riod of time you might start benefittingfrom their different point of view.

Always stand up with your spouseIt is very important to not let the tensionwith your in-laws, reflect in your rela-tionship with your spouse. Never let thechannel of communication betweenyou and your significant other, close.

Set boundaries for all relationships:It is essential to set boundaries for ahealthy relationship with the in-laws. If

possible, try to have this conversationpersonally, without delegating yourpartner to do it on your behalf. Someissues might ruffle feathers, but in thelong run this will bring peace in yourrelationships. With this, you would beaware of the other’s expectations orwhat you are willing to give to therelationship.

Make 'yourself' an important priorityKnow what you like, live your life ac-cordingly and, strangely enough, people will start respecting you for whoyou are. Let them know your limits andalso your relationship's limits.

Maintain peace with all your in-lawsIf something does not agree with you,try to hold back the urge to criticise. And if you have to say something, try tobe polite and gentle in pointing people’smistakes.

Talk to a friend and share your feel-ings:

For Good In-laws Relation

for the life of the world is My Flesh …Those who eat My Flesh and drink MyBlood have eternal life, and I will raisethem up on the last day, for My Fleshis true food and My Blood is truedrink” (John, 6:48…51…54-55).

Conclusion: “Therefore, let uscelebrate the festival, not with the oldyeast, the yeast of malice and evil, butwith the unleavened Bread of sincerityand truth” ( 1 Corinthians, 5:8)

(Contd.. from p. 15)

Spend some time with your in-laws:Try spending quality time with your in-laws. Speak to them about the com-mon person in your life. Listen andlearn from their experiences. And, whenyou find something in common, spendtime pursuing that common interest.

Do not disgrace kids :You might feel that your in-laws arereally indulging your kids. You mightfell like stopping them, but let themhave fun together. At the same time, parents have the first right and respon-sibility of bringing up their children withthe right values.

Avoid talking abouttroubles betweenyou and your partnerwith your in-laws.Doing so can openan inappropriate lineof communication.Instead, talk to afriend and get it offyour chest. Just besure that your friendwill not spill the beansto any one else.

Do little specialthings for them:Try and do things foryour in-laws, andmake them feelwanted. Even in thedirest of situations, remember that thereis one thing that youshare with your in-laws, love for the per-son you married. So,just to keep that per-son happy, bend alittle.

To bear witness is always a challenge. To give testimony is evenmore inclined towards tension,

stress and worry. Over two thousandyears ago it was no different, and morealarming than our present state of worldaffairs. The early Christians moved andmet together cautiously. They heardthe apostles and disciples of Jesuswho provided authentic accounts ofthe resurrection as they were witnessesof the risen Messiah. Their testimonywas carefully logged and the risk ofbeing found out was the challenge theyaccepted.

The triumph of Jesus Christ is inthe ultimate miracle of the resurrection. He conquered death. The recordedfact that Christ died, was buried androse on the third day is supreme proofof His divinity. Because of this amazingevent, the resurrection of theMessiah seals the valida-tion of His claims to divinity.Jesus was, is and alwayswill be the Christ triumphant. His apostles were aware ofthis and spoke with the truthand openness to all whowould listen.

The Gospel of John11:25, “ I am the resurrection and thelife, he who believes in me, though hedie, yet shall be alive, and whoeverlives and believes in me shall never die..” Jesus, by His own power rose fromthe grave. In Matthew 26:61 Christ said,“I am able to destroy the temple of God,and to build it in three days.”

St. John Vianney, Cure D’ars, wrote a beautiful sermon for EasterSunday. I reproduce an extract fromhis Easter Sermon.

“…Jesus lives. What glad tidingsfor us; what joy and delight for us whoare baptized in the name of Jesus whobelieve in the teaching of Jesus, for us,who may live in the blessed hope thatwe, too, may one day rise again to abetter life. When the Man of Sorrows,His struggle and His sufferings ended, cried out to the world with a loud voicethose mighty words “it is consum-mated”, when He bowed His head and

gave up the ghost, the sun was ob-scured, it did not wish to behold thatdreadful spectacle, the earth wasshaken mightily, its graves opened, and the dead arose. Today, howeverone grave is open, and from it has risena sun which will never be obscured,

which will never set, a sunwhich creates new life. Thisnew sun is the CrucifiedOne, the Son of God, GodHimself, blessed for all eter-nity. He it is in whom thewords of the Apostle are ful-filled; for He humbled him-self and was obedient evenunto death on a cross, there-fore God has exalted Him

and given Him a name which is aboveall other names.

In the morning of the third day thewomen went to the tomb of Jesus andfound an angel of the Lord who toldthem not to fear, he knew they hadcome to find Jesus who was crucified. He is risen, said the angel, adding, goquickly, tell his disciples that He isrisen. And they went with all haste fromthe sepulcher, running with great hap-piness to tell the disciples. Read allabout it in St. Matt. 28:5-10.”

In the first letter of Peter 1:3 it iswritten, “Blessed be the God and Fa-ther of our Lord Jesus Christ! By Hisgreat mercy we have been born anewto a living hope through the resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

St. Paul to the Phillippians 3:11.“That I may know Him and the power ofthe resurrection, and may share His

sufferings becoming like Him in Hisdeath, that if possible I may attain theresurrection from the dead.”

We find in the Acts of the Apostles4:33, “ And with great power theapostles gave their testimony to theresurrection of the Lord Jesus, andgreat grace was upon them all.”

Jesus promises us no less whenwe give testimony to His resurrection;telling family, friends and strangers ofHis triumph. Believe in Him. And “greatgrace” will also come on you. Truly, theresurrection of the Messiah is a truthwhich lives above and beyond the por-tals of this lifetime. Jesus is my Lordand my God. Amen.

The logo created by the Catholic CommunicationCentre was RED – Colour of Love & GREEN – Colour of life.It includes an artistic variation of the male female symbols.Yet they symbolize so much more. Could Red also be thecolour of violence and Green perhaps the colour of jeal-ousy, two motifs that plague man-woman relationships. These colours also mean that not a male-centric or female-obsessed world - but a human society, one that is more
