Pastoral Success?
Pastoral success is about rightly understanding, pursuing, and achieving what God’s vision for your ministry is all
about.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,
continue to live in Him,rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith
as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
(Colossians 2:6-7)
What Leaders Do…Leaders cast vision
Leaders create environments
Leaders develop systems
Leaders equip leaders
Leadership functions on the basis of TRUST.
Integrity has high influence VALUE.
Our tendency is to work harder on our IMAGE than on our integrity.
Integrity means LIVING the truth myself, before leading others.
Favorite Leadership Quotes:“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” (Warren Bennis)
“Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them.”(Dr. Robert Jarvik, inventor of
the Jarvik-7 artificial heart)
Leadership Quotes…“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” (John Quincy Adams)
“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.”(Max Depree)
Leadership Quotes…“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.” (John Maxwell)
“Leadership is the capacity to influence others by unleashing their power and potential to impact the greater good.” (p. xix, Leading at A Higher Level, Blanchard)
Leadership Quotes…We believe that leadership is about
positive and proactive influence in the context of healthy relationships.
(Jackson & Bosse Smith)
SynergyI commit to leverage my Kingdom influence by investing in leaders and organizations who synergize their calling and passions for the glory of God.
The nexus of passion and trust is where great Kingdom things happen!
#1 Cast Vision
Casting VisionWhen Leadership Is Pure…
It always starts with a need. That need sparks passion
within a person. That person acts in response
to the need. This action moves others to cooperate.
How do you “get” vision?Isaiah 22:4,5 “Therefore I said, "Turn away from me; let me weep bitterly. Do not try to console me over the destruction of my people." The Lord, the LORD Almighty, has a day of tumult and trampling and terror in the Valley of Vision, a day of battering down walls and of crying out to the mountains.”
Characteristics of a God-Size Vision
It comes from God. Isaiah 29:11
It’s always costly. Matthew 17:20
It requires more than we can give. Phil. 4:19
Requires Pastor and key leaders to “get it.”1 Thess. 5:17
#2 Create
Environments
Create environments toreach unchurched,
grow disciples, develop leaders.
Questions from Andy Stanley
Environment Questions… Is the context appealing? Is the presentation engaging? Is the content helpful?
Saddleback Original…
What is Alignment? In my view, the task of Christian
Management & Administration is about aligning strategies, structures, and systems to support the mission/vision/values of the
organization.
My Contribution? Alignment and Execution are 75% of the Battle…
#3 Develop Systems
-INPUT -THROUGHPUT
-OUTPUTmanufacturing model
What are the implications for us? Begin with the end in mind…what do you want
to produce?
Organizational Questions… Which gauges should we be watching?
Where are we“manufacturing” energy?
Proven Practices for Getting Things Done…
What gets talked about gets done.
What gets trained for gets done. What gets measured gets done. What gets budgeted gets done. What gets confronted gets done. What gets rewarded gets done.
#4 Equip Leaders
Two Views of Leadership StrategyGrowth Limits
Control
Clarity of Vision
Developing Leaders
You teach what you know.
You reproduce who you are.
Hearing From God…1. There is an enemy who wants us to be
deceived and destroyed. 2. We have to choose to obey when we
understand His will.3. We have to learn to discern God’s voice
and separate it from others.4. Choose to reproduce. Requires security
and releasing ministry (Ephesians 4 model)5. Can you imagine a 5-fold ministry in your
____church?
Calling is not about the size of a church,
the scope of a ministry, or the bottom line of a business –
it is about the heart of God.
