OUTSTANDING TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR (TC) 50-250 EMPLOYEES

CLAUDIA OCHOA – PRISMA GRAPHIC CORP.Current Single-Occupancy Vehicle (SOV) rate 81%, previous year 80%

Claudia works hard to ensure her program at Prisma Graphic Corp. is on track and successfully implemented. Her attention to detail works to her benefit during the annual audit with Maricopa County, ensuring a stress-free experience for both her and the auditor.

DIXIE FENCL – GREENBERG TRAURIGCurrent SOV rate 77%, previous year 80%

Dixie has been the TC for Greenberg Traurig for many years and her enthusiasm and passion for the program has not dimmed. Dixie greets every day with a smile and a “can do” attitude and engages employees in conversations about their commute via creative emails and informative meetings. She also regularly participates in the monthly TC webinars and asks questions to get employees involved.

KAREN BOLLONG – AUER PRECISION COMPANY, INC.Current SOV rate 70%, previous year 71%

Karen’s efforts to effectively manage and promote her Travel Reduction Program (TRP) shows in her annual audit results. She regularly communicates her TRP incentives using emails and bulletin board postings.

OUTSTANDING TC 251-500 EMPLOYEES

JOY TEVIS – SMARTHEALTH, INC.Current SOV rate 69%, previous year 67%

As a veteran TC, Joy has consistently implemented, promoted and tracked SmartHealth’s program and encouraged employees to get involved and participate via emails and a company webpage. SmartHealth’s SOV rates have been consistently in the low 70s to low 60s.

KATIE KES – VEREIT, INC.Current SOV rate 88%, previous year 85%

Katie has been VEREIT’s TC for 12 years and keeps baking up sweet new ways to keep the company craving the TRP! In the last year, she cooked up four new quarterly prize

drawings, each with its own unique theme – including mystery books (Carpooling is elementary, my dear!), Groundhog Day (Burrow into a comfortable seat on the bus!), and more. She also designed a bulletin board with rotating content (including a giant camel encouraging alternative modes for getting to work on Camelback Road).

After being disappointed with the prior years’ survey completion rates, she prepared an idea to make puns off employees’ names and use them as spokesmodels – and the staff LOVED it!

MARGENE CANDELA – BBVA COMPASSCurrent SOV rate 83.5%, previous year 82% (average of two sites)

Margene has been the TC for BBVA Compass for many years. She always approaches the program with a positive attitude and, because of her efforts, BBVA's program participation has grown. Each year when it’s time to update her TRP Annual Plan, she asks for assistance from her Commute Solutions coordinator to better engage her employees.

OUTSTANDING TC MORE THAN 500 EMPLOYEES - PUBLIC EMPLOYER

BARB SHEPPARD – SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTSOV rates vary among 30 sites

Barb has been the TC for the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) for many years and is responsible for ensuring all 30 sites are aware of the TRP.

Barb holds an annual site TC training to spread the word about the program and distributes binders that contain all the pertinent information about SUSD's program. She also encourages her sites to submit entries in the annual Clean Air Campaign bulletin board contest.

EDWARD JONES – CITY OF MESACurrent SOV rate 74.33%, previous year 77.04% (average of 21 sites)

Edward manages more than 20 sites, representing over 2,700 employees, and has overseen TRP for more than ten years.

Edward attributes much of his TRP success to the City’s commitment and development of their Clean Air Club app. The app allows him to communicate with and track travel reduction efforts of participating employees, and has random drawing functionality to facilitate quarterly prize drawings. Through collaboration with the City’s HR and IT departments, communication with employees not participating in the Clean Air Club for events such as High Pollution Advisories (HPAs), TRP promotions, and the TRP Annual Survey is accomplished electronically.

KENNETH C. HARPER – PHOENIX VETERAN’S AFFAIRS (VA) HEALTHCARE SYSTEMKenneth Harper is the TC for the Phoenix VA Hospital, which offers several types of commuter work benefits. He also provides new hires information on how the TRP works and guides employees on how to utilize the VA Intranet.

Mr. Harper orders all necessary GO cards for the 33 active vanpools, as well as the bus and light rail passes for employees. Ken ensures that funding for each program is compliant with all regulatory guidelines. He is also a vanpooler, traveling from Gilbert to Phoenix, a one-way trip of approximately 25 miles. Ken says participating in a vanpool has allowed him to catch up on his beauty rest.

OUTSTANDING TC – MORE THAN 500 EMPLOYEES PRIVATE EMPLOYER

BENNY RIOS – BANK OF AMERICACurrent SOV rate 68.53%, previous year 69.77%

Since July 2015, Benny has been successful in lowering the SOV rates by roughly 1.25% every year. During the 2016-2017 year, he oversaw, managed and audited the following: 32 vanpool groups (312) associates, 320 carpool groups (660 associates), 62 bike riders and 2,100 transit associates.

In May 2017, he distributed more than 750 transit passes within 30 days to six BOA locations throughout the Valley. By doing so, he ensured every BOA associate who uses public transportation did not run into any issues using the cards.

DANIELLE TAYLOR – AMERICAN EXPRESSCurrent SOV rate 67.7%, previous year 70.46%

Danielle has been the TC for American Express for two and half years and is always trying to find ways to improve the program and increase participation. She handles the program for nearly 7,000 employees and contractors in five different buildings.

Danielle manages the vanpool program with 35 Valley Metro vanpools and approximately 350 participants. The program is 100% subsidized so participants only have to pay for gas.

Danielle also manages the carpool program with more than 450 participants and the semi-annual renewal/registration process and also coordinates with security to provide a current list of all license plates of any registered carpoolers.

Danielle has quarterly events to promote the program and increase awareness by giving away car sunshades, mugs, t-shirts, mouse pads, key chains and more.

Page 9: 30 YEARS - Valley Metro · 2020. 9. 17. · Nature, Michael Lington has wowed, seduced and surprised his fans. From infectious melodies, rich emotion, funky grooves and a powerful

16

SHIKHA RAWAT – NXP SEMICONDUCTORSShikha passionately works towards increasing awareness about the program at her worksite.

Bus riders have increased 53% since last year and she is expecting more people will join. She also promoted Valley Bike Month and got the highest number of participants that the company has ever seen. She also worked with bicyclists to set up a covered bike cage on site at two various locations.

Following a site consolidation that increased the number of employees, she asked the facilities department to add carpool parking spaces, increasing the number to 74.

MARICOPA COUNTY OUTSTANDING TRAVEL REDUCTION PROGRAM (TRP) 50-250 EMPLOYEES

PARADISE VALLEY COUNTRY CLUBCurrent SOV rate 77.5%, previous year 81.5%

Paradise Valley Country Club has been a part of TRP for 27 years and this year's survey results showed a drop in SOV rates from 81.5% to 77.5%. Getting employees to participate is not easy, especially in a hospitality setting where transit service is limited.

Stacy Thomas, the TC, has created a good mix of incentives to attract employees to participate, such as $100 bi-monthly drawings, new alternative mode user (AMU) incentives, transit subsidies and more. She also uses emails, a bulletin board and memos help to spread the word about the program.

TOWN OF PARADISE VALLEYCurrent SOV rate 73.7%, previous year 74.4%

The Town of Paradise Valley offers a robust program to their 89 employees, but the program’s success is largely due to the efforts of TC Natalie Montenegrino.

Incentives include monthly drawings, best AMU incentives, Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program, carpool parking, showers, bike racks, telework, compressed workweeks and carpool subsidies. Bulletin boards, messages on paychecks and a consistent new hire orientation keeps employees informed about the program.

MARICOPA COUNTY OUTSTANDING TRP 251-500 EMPLOYEES

CHOICE HOTELS INTERNATIONALCurrent SOV rate 69%, previous year 72%

Choice Hotels (CH) has been in the TRP for 26 years. Over the years, CH's SOV rates has consistently been in the low 70s to high 60s which is commendable due to challenges with gaining participation.

Program incentives that catch employees’ attention include monthly and biannual drawings, new participant incentives, GRH program, carpool parking, $1/day subsidies for all AMUs, 100% transit subsidy and more. Effective communications, such as emails and newsletters, help to spread the word about the program.

ENDURANCE INTERNATIONAL GROUPCurrent SOV rate 60%, previous year 79%

Endurance International Group has been in the TRP for 11 years and has consistently experienced reduced SOV vehicle rates. Incentives include monthly and quarterly drawings, GRH program, carpool parking, transit subsidies, showers, compressed work schedules, telework, onsite daycare and bike racks.

Communication via emails, bulletin boards, a ShareTheRide custom subsite and newsletter has kept the program top of mind for employees.

FIRST TRANSITFirst Transit operates 12 local fixed-route transit routes for City of Phoenix. First Transit is happy to be a big part of reducing vehicle trips in the Valley, and is leading by example in offering its 400 employees at the West Phoenix Transit Facility a Valley Metro Platinum Pass, covering 100% of all rides. Many employees use the bus instead of owning a vehicle and appreciate that they can get around town at no cost.

From August 2016 to July 2017, First Transit employees used the program for 12,150 trips and saved approximately $24,000.

MARICOPA COUNTY OUTSTANDING TRP MORE THAN 500 EMPLOYEES – PUBLIC EMPLOYER

CITY OF MESACurrent SOV rate 74.33%, previous year 77.04% (average of 21 sites)

The City of Mesa has more than 20 sites representing more than 2,700 employees. The City created the Clean Air Club, a web-based application accessible from an employee’s smartphone, iPad or desktop. The application allows employees to track their trips and participate in quarterly prize drawings. Participation in the Clean Air Club averages 100 employees monthly.

The City also implemented compressed work schedules, with most employees working a 4/10 schedule, and sponsors bicycle friendly events such as CycloMesa and Bike2Work Day.

CITY OF SCOTTSDALECurrent SOV rate 87%, previous year 87% (average of eight sites)

The City of Scottsdale has participated in the TRP for 26 years and has eight sites representing 2,400 employees. Program incentives include quarterly AMU drawings, GRH program, carpool and vanpool parking, $45 vanpool subsidies, 100% transit subsidy and more.

The City hosts an annual Cycle the Arts ride, which allows employees and residents to learn about commuting and view art installations. Additionally, they hold a Bike to Work Day event to encourage employees to cycle to work.

MARICOPA COUNTY OUTSTANDING TRP MORE THAN 500 EMPLOYEES – PRIVATE EMPLOYER

AMERICAN EXPRESSCurrent SOV rate 67.75%, previous year 70.46%

American Express has maintained and improved an active TRP since 1988. American Express offers incentives and alternatives to driving alone, including a 100% subsidized vanpool program, preferred carpool parking, subsidized transit pass, a bicycle commuter program and quarterly giveaways.

The TRP is promoted through the communal SharePoint site and events are hosted via information booths at multiple sites throughout the year. Additionally, the program is highlighted on the global website's Phoenix Local News page, advertising on television screens within the facilities and by using the American Express TRP logo on all media and giveaways.

The program spans five campuses in Phoenix and total participation in carpool, vanpool, bike to work, subsidized Valley Metro passes and telework totals approximately 1,250 participants, which is 18% of the employee population. Since 2009, the SOV rate has decreased from 80.42% to 67.75% and the second largest building reached the SOV goal of under 60% for the first time in 2016.

DESERT MOUNTAIN CLUBCurrent SOV rate 64.4%, previous year 64.8%

Even though Desert Mountain Club (DMC) is located in the far northeast Valley, the company has managed to keep a significantly lower SOV rate than many of its peers.

For the past 10+ years, DMC's SOV rates have ranged from 64% to 47%. Incentives such as showers, bike racks and compressed work schedules help in achieving the goal, but the most effective activity are vanpools, with DMC offering a 50% subsidy.

PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITALCurrent SOV rate 85%, previous year 88%

Effectively communicating and implementing a successful TRP within the healthcare industry can be a challenge, but the TC at Phoenix Children's Hospital has been successful with efforts to reduce drive-alone trips and miles by the use of incentives that gain participation.

Incentives include monthly drawings, new AMU bonuses, GRH program, covered carpool parking, showers and bike racks. The hospital also has about 45 employees who telework and nearly 600 employees who work a compressed week.

OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

BILL MCCOMAS – CITY OF PHOENIX AND PHOENIX SPOKES PEOPLEBill has biked to work at the City of Phoenix since 2006. With a 5.5-mile trip, he has logged more than 17,400 bike commute miles so far.

Bill is President and a founding member of Phoenix Spokes People (PSP), an advocacy group that makes Phoenix a friendlier place to bike and attends countless budget hearings and public meetings.

Bill built a Facebook page called PDL PHX, “All about the joys of riding a bicycle in Phoenix” and shares inspiring posts. Bill was also a founding member and tester of Grid Bikeshare and is a board member and loyal volunteer at Rusty Spoke Community Bicycle Collective. He also uses his personal time to speak at events such as Valley Bike Month’s Statewide Bicycling Summit and employer Lunch and Learns.

RICK TESMAN – BECHTEL CORPORATIONRick Tesman is the Bechtel Business Services Facilities Manager Worldwide. Rick became involved with the TRP in 2014. Not knowing much about the program but eager to learn, he immediately began asking questions and has been the “go-to person” for the company’s TC for ideas and suggestions. When Bechtel did a live vanpool ride-along, Rick was there to lend support. When vanpools were close to cancelling, once again Rick was there to help and added an extra $100 to each van’s monthly lease.

Rick sends the TC articles about sustainability, “going green” and air quality. Rick also adds input on the TRP Annual Plan updates and has a positive impact on Bechtel’s program.

OUTSTANDING MARKETING & CREATIVITY (ELECTRONIC and/or PRINT MEDIA)

CITY OF AVONDALEThe City of Avondale promotes the TRP at each new employee orientation and recently developed a new flyer. This bright-colored flyer explains the program benefits and emphasizes how participants may earn cash and gift cards, reduce stress, help the environment and make new friends.

During employee orientation, the City uses the Zoom neighborhood circulator to drive new employees to landmarks across the City of Avondale, which promotes using Zoom to get to work.

SRPIn September 2016, SRP achieved a fleet goal: 20% electric vehicles. To celebrate, SRP created a video campaign highlighting the alternative fuel fleet, which was an enormous effort. Employees and volunteers joined to drive the electric vehicles to Mormon Flat Dam to be photographed. This campaign successfully raised awareness among employees and the community about SRP’s recent milestone and their dedication to reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

VEREIT, INC.As the company has grown, it has become more challenging to incentivize employees to participate in the survey process. Free candy bars and ice cream party competitions have become stale and ignored.

To grab everyone’s attention and get employees talking, the TC resorted to one of the oldest tricks in the book: peer pressure! By putting everyone’s peers into her marketing campaign, the TC surprised people into reading their daily emails which included a link to the survey and instruction.

Photos of employees were included with their own slogan. Every copier and breakroom in the office had posters displayed and honorary employee Cookie Monster was on the job to help.

This was an eye-catching way to communicate the survey information and also helped people to know other employees outside of their own departments.

OUTSTANDING MARKETING & CREATIVITY EVENT LESS THAN $500 BUDGET

MARC COMMUNITY RESOURCES, INC.In February 2017, the TC held a TRP party with a Change Your Game Plan campaign theme. This helped to recognize participants who make a difference. A Game Plan themed cake and cardboard standup from the show The Big Bang Theory featured one of the actors sporting a ShareTheRide t-shirt setting the stage for the event.

Page 12: 30 YEARS - Valley Metro · 2020. 9. 17. · Nature, Michael Lington has wowed, seduced and surprised his fans. From infectious melodies, rich emotion, funky grooves and a powerful

23

Thirty-one employees attended and the cost of the event was $285.29, which may not seem like much, but the proof of effectiveness comes from the awareness and employee participation.

MARICOPA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH (MCDPH)MCDPH promotes the benefits of cycling, but the numbers of employees biking to work remained low. The bike rack in our leased building was located in the covered parking garage, across from the parking attendant. However, it was an older, “wheel bender” style and cyclists had trouble gaining access.

In February 2017, staff met with building management, who expressed support for accommodating better bike racks. As Valley Bike Month was approaching, we suggested a Lunch and Learn event to promote cycling to all building users.

Building management provided a ground-level space to hold the meeting and helped publicize it. Since then, we have partnered with building management to install new improved racks for seven bikes and there has been an increase in employees biking to work, as well as cyclists using the racks.

VEREIT, INC.VEREIT keeps its program fresh by using new themes each quarter, which helps staff pay attention when seeing messages for more than a decade. For example, the TC recently used a Groundhog Day theme for the winter event.

TRP messages were focused around the seasons such as: “Try participating in the TRP and see whether you like it!” and “Tired of driving with road hogs? Carpool and use the HOV lane!” Movie references were also used, such as “Don’t drive angry!” Also, the TC created a giant cardboard groundhog and shone a light on him to create his shadow, Participants were given little groundhog stuffed animals and the winners were given fresh spring daffodils along with their cash winnings. Even though the event has ended, these giveaways help remind employees of the TRP and its message.

OUTSTANDING MARKETING & CREATIVITY EVENT MORE THAN $500 BUDGET

ORIGAMI OWLOrigami Owl held an event to encourage employees to try alternative modes of transportation. The TRP employee appreciation luncheon also launched a bike program to introduce employees to cycling and the company purchased six cruiser bikes.

The bike program encourages employees to cycle instead of driving during the cooler months to lunch destinations. The company also purchased bells, baskets and helmets to encourage safe commuting. Each bike cost approximately $200. With added costs of the accessories, food and goodies for the event totaled $1,200.00.

SRPTo increase participation in the corporate bikeshare program, SRP launched “Pedal for Prizes”. This four-month campaign occurred last winter and featured fun prizes for every type of rider. Prizes varied and included salon certificates, Chicago Cubs tickets and one of two grand prizes, a new bike from GIANT. Not only did the campaign increase participants in the program by 20% and achieve 500 employee registrations, many employees learned about bike safety on the road and local trails around SRP campuses.

OUTSTANDING COMMUTER – TRANSIT RIDER (BUS or RAIL)

GUNNAR WILSON – WEBPTGunnar takes light rail to and from work every day. He also walks to lunch and errands during the day. He rides light rail no matter the time of year or the time of day, always with a smile on his face.

MARSHA POWERS – POLSINELLI SHUGARTMarsha is a dedicated RAPID bus commuter. She has rearranged her work schedule to coincide with the public transit system, not because she does not have a vehicle, but because she cares about the environment and doing her part to improve air quality.

WILLIE HAYNES – SRPWillie Haynes has been a transit rider for the past four years and commutes by bus almost every day. With a 30-mile one-way commute, his actions have had a positive impact on the environment and illustrate how anyone can be successful taking the bus—even with a long commute. His dedication to using public transit is truly inspirational. Haynes says that he takes public transit to eliminate the stress of being stuck in traffic, and the best part is that he saves money and is able to catch up on email, reading and other tasks.

OUTSTANDING COMMUTER – CARPOOLER or VANPOOLER

DEBBIE WARBURTON – GREENBERG TRAURIGDebbie makes a difference in her community by carpooling since 2005 and saves some money along the way. When her daughter, Lauren, joined the firm three years ago, it seemed natural they would carpool. A short time later, coworker Matt joined the carpool, and they play musical chairs behind the wheel, continuing to share rides despite scheduling hurdles.

Debbie benefits from carpooling, likes using the carpool lane and loves winning prizes while sharing the ride with her family. On a humorous note, mother and daughter occasionally jam to hip hop and rap on their way home.

FRED HENDRIX – ARIZONA STATE PRISON COMPLEX - FLORENCEFred Hendrix has been vanpooling since 2005 and his daily commute from Mesa to Florence five days a week is approximately 2,000 roundtrip miles monthly.

His vanpool group consists of nine full-time riders and three part-time riders. Fred is able to keep his van at full capacity by recruiting part-time riders if a full-time rider leaves. With this strategy, he is able to assure maximum benefits to his riders when spliting the van fare and fuel costs.

Although there have been many changes to his group over time, three of his riders have been with the vanpool for more than seven years. One of his riders left the group for several years due to retirement and has since rejoined when starting a new job in their department. Fred and many of the riders maintain friendships outside of work.

VA HOSPITAL VANPOOL #35731VA Hospital Vanpool #35731 has been together for almost five years. Most of the members are veterans and have varied jobs including nurses, lab techs, a police officer and bio med specialists.

The vanpool travels 85 miles roundtrip each day and has traveled more than 102,000 miles since they started. Additionally, combined they have saved 612,000 miles on their personal cars and have reduced 1,273 pounds of pollution.

The group celebrates birthdays by decorating the van and having a tailgate party before work. Recently, decorations included a summer beach party theme, complete with beach towels, pail shovel, water and snacks.

If someone is having a bad day, one of the vanpool riders will put on her red clown nose, which is sure to make everyone laugh.

Working together for safer roads, cleaner air. We are proud to recognize 2017 Clean Air Campaign Awards honorees for their work to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.

OUTSTANDING COMMUTER – BICYCLIST or WALKER

DR. GLEN KISHI – INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE – PHOENIX INDIAN MEDICAL CENTERDr. Kishi is a long-time bicyclist and an advocate for using alternative transportation modes. In April 2017, Dr. Kishi promoted Valley Bike Month at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center with gusto! He encouraged colleagues to register for the Team Challenge. Each week he sent an encouraging email to teammates reminding them to ride their bike to the store, library or errands.

Dr. Kishi also stresses the benefits for general physical fitness and cardiovascular health. He encourages fellow bicyclists to be fully attentive to their surroundings, obey all traffic laws and always wear a properly fitted helmet. He enjoys riding past the traffic congestion but more importantly, he is thrilled to know that he does not contribute to air pollution.

JOHN VELAZQUEZ – CITY OF AVONDALEAvondale employee, John Velazquez, is a passionate bicyclist who bikes or walks to work every day. John rides his bike for many health benefits, including reduced stress. He has lived in Arizona for nearly 11 years and has worked for the City for eight.

John believes that biking to work allows greater emotional and spiritual proximity to his surroundings. He explains, “As I pedal to work, the sound and smell of my small and vibrant city and the Estrella mountains smiling in the background it de-stresses me, fills me up inside with joy. The ride to work grounds me, calms me and helps me prepare mentally for a workday. The spiritual and emotional benefits of loving the moment are immense”.

LAURENT KOUNOUHO – AMERICAN EXPRESSLaurent is a bike enthusiast who enjoys cycling to work and for leisure. He rode more than 1,200 miles in the past year to work and plans to continue biking to work. One of the main reasons he enjoys riding is the connection to his childhood. Laurent grew up in a small village in Benin, Africa and rode his bike everywhere. By bicycling, he reduces gasoline use and helps the environment.

Page 14: 30 YEARS - Valley Metro · 2020. 9. 17. · Nature, Michael Lington has wowed, seduced and surprised his fans. From infectious melodies, rich emotion, funky grooves and a powerful

26

Laurent also feels that by being a strong visual presence in his neighborhood when riding, he is inspiring not only his own children, but also the neighborhood children He feels this is a small part of showing all children that individuals can make a difference.

MICHAEL N. SANDERS – ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, MULTIMODAL PLANNING DIVISIONBicycle and Pedestrian Program Coordinator, Michael Sanders, is responsible for developing pedestrian and bicycle facilities, as well as public education, promotion and safety programs. Michael has been a featured speaker at Capitol Rideshare’s Lunch and Learn Program. He speaks from personal and professional experience since Michael bikes 30 miles round trip to work each day.

Technically, he has been a bicycle commuter since grade school. As an adult, he’s been commuting to work via bike since 1994. To reach his office from his home in Ahwatukee, Michael rides along major surface streets in south Phoenix. He notes, “Not unlike owning and maintaining a motor vehicle, you have to maintain your health and perform regular bicycle maintenance”.

His advice to employees considering commuting by bicycle: “Bicyclist training programs, such as those offered by the League of American Bicyclists or American Bicycling Education Association, can play a substantial role by increasing bicyclists' confidence".

OUTSTANDING COMMUTER – MULTI-MODAL COMMUTER

APRIL PERKINS – ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIONApril Perkins put the “multi” in multi-modal commuting! Leaving home early in the morning, April rides her bike and her daughter McKenna rides her scooter to catch the local bus which takes McKenna to her before-school program. April then rides her bike and takes a local bus to the Mesa park-and-ride, then takes the Express bus, arriving to work by 7:30 a.m. In the evening, April leaves work by 5:00 p.m. and rides her bike to the light rail station. She then takes light rail to a stop in Mesa and then rides her bike to McKenna’s after-school program site. She and McKenna then bike to the bus stop and take a 10-mile bus ride, then ride back home together.

April’s daily round-trip commute totaled 86 miles! April and McKenna made this commute together from September 2016 until May 2017. Now that McKenna is going to junior high school, she catches the school bus and April’s commute is shorter. April saves money, exercises, reduces air pollution and even makes friends along her route. “I’ve found it enjoyable to take the bus or light rail, just to sit back and relax and meet new people while getting to my destination”.

JOSHUA SMITH – CITY OF MESAJoshua Smith is a construction inspector for City of Mesa. During TRP plan year 2017, he logged more than 1,600 commute miles on the Clean Air Club app, using his bicycle, the bus and walking to work.

Joshua uses alternative modes since he enjoys riding his bicycle and when coupled with bus, it makes for a convenient commute. “It’s great exercise and (although I don’t self-identify as an activist) I am environmentally conscious.”

KATY FORETICH – CHARLES SCHWABKaty has logged 2,759 miles with 480 entries in ShareTheRide.com and has saved more than $640 the past 10 months, all while praising the benefits such as saving money, alleviating stress and minimizing frustration stemming from sitting in traffic.

Katy enjoys reading, catching up on emails and people watching. On occasion she has even found a few bus drivers who know sign language that will strike up good conversations in English and American Sign Language. She has seen many things and has many stories to tell, even confessing to joining in and singing a rousing “Happy Birthday” to a bus driver with her fellow commuters.

MARC CAMPBELL – SRPAs the manager of all SRP commute benefits, Marc Campbell is a remarkable commuter that leads by example. To reduce congestion and his carbon footprint, Marc has been vanpooling for the past eight years. In addition to vanpooling, Marc is an electric vehicle (EV) user. To support SRP Drive Electric and further reduce emissions, he has moved to a 100% electric car for the days he does not vanpool. Additionally, he carpools in his EV when vanpooling is not on his schedule.

MAG LIVABLE COMMUNITIES

CITY OF TEMPE - TEMPE BIKE SHARE PROGRAMOn May 15, 2017, Tempe joined Phoenix and Mesa as part of the GRID Bike Share Program. Tempe’s system includes 300 bikes, 450 racks and 30 stations. Tempe’s 30 stations are located in high-activity areas like downtown Tempe, along light rail, near ASU and at community centers. There is also a discounted rate for all Tempe employees which is promoted as part of the TRP.

In June, there were 774 new memberships with 15,116 active members among the three cities for an addition of 683 active members since May. The average trip distance in Tempe was two miles with the system average of 1.7 miles. The average trip time was 25 minutes in Tempe with the system average of 22 minutes per trip. The total miles ridden in the system in June was 9,015 of which 4,393 miles were ridden in Tempe. In the prior month, the total miles ridden in the system was 10,237 of which 2,909 miles were ridden in Tempe.

SRP AND TOWN OF GUADALUPESRP and the Town of Guadalupe are devoted to working with local municipalities to fund and develop multi-use paths on SRP’s canal infrastructure that delivers water to the Valley. Within the last year, SRP has made special efforts to fund the development of three canal trail projects. In particular, the Guadalupe Highline Canal path features the beautification of 1.5 miles and includes a continuous paved path with solar lighting, landscaping, decorative fencing and public art, partially created by local schoolchildren and other residents. In addition to connecting three flood control retention basins, the path provides access to existing recreational facilities and schools.

This project was a major step in the continuous improvement of the area and creates a more active and sustainable community. This project was completed by SRP in cooperation with the Town of Guadalupe, the City of Phoenix and the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY – 50-499 EMPLOYEES

GARMIN INTERNATIONAL – CHANDLER OFFICEGarmin is committed to protect the environment and continuously strive to improve performance, recognizing the impact of corporate activities on the environment.

The Garmin Chandler office is a 60,000 sq. ft. LEED Gold Certified building. This research and development facility does not produce large amounts of waste, and the ways that the office minimizes environmental impacts are:

• On-site renewable energy – Solar panels cover seven parking structures and produce approximately 70% of annual electricity needs

• Four electric car charging stations and shaded bicycle racks and showers• Water use reduction – 20% reduction and water efficient landscaping• Storage and collection of recyclables• TRP implementation which includes GRH program, monthly drawings, High Pollution Advisory drawings, commuter parking benefits and Commuter Club cards

WEBPTWebPT has always believed in conserving resources, which is why the company made “Resource Efficiency: Do Más with Menos” one of its eight team commitments (i.e., the core tenets that define WebPT’s company culture). One way WebPT does "más with menos" is by encouraging employees to use public transportation and carpool. WebPT reimburses each participant $50 per month for gas and/or $50 per month for a transit pass. Last year, WebPT provided more than $12,000 in reimbursement to carpool, bus and light rail users, who comprise approximately 25% of the company’s workforce.

In addition, each employee who carpools, takes transit or uses alternative fuel vehicles is entered into a monthly prize drawing for a $25 gift card; bicyclists and pedestrians are entered into a biannual drawing for a $50 gift card. Finally, the company will cover $100 of an employee’s moving expenses if the employee moves closer to the worksite.

WebPT also provides several vehicle charging stations, a company-sponsored Grid Bike station and a transportation expense-tracking portal.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY – 500-1,500 EMPLOYEES

AMERICAN EXPRESSIn the past year, American Express has reduced their global carbon footprint and optimized the efficiency and sustainability of their workplace. American Express ranked 63rd among the top U.S. green companies in the 2016 Newsweek Green Ranking. This is an improvement from 89th in 2015. In addition, American Express invested $1.7 million into energy-efficient initiatives, adding employee commuting options and including sustainability as a part of their decision-making in food and beverages served, house equipment and operations.

Additionally, technology-based programs were introduced to decrease their carbon footprint, such as Skype for Business. Jabber also helps employees communicate with colleagues, partners and customers, and telepresence studios feature high-definition video and audio.

American Express has reduced carbon emissions by 30% since 2011 and set a goal in 2017 to maintain a 30% reduction through 2021 and to ensure 100% of electricity comes from renewable energy sources.

CITY OF AVONDALEA key component of the Avondale’s Municipal Sustainability Plan was to create a rainwater harvesting demonstration garden that would provide an educational experience for residents visiting City Hall.

The soil in the garden areas was suffering from erosion issues, which also threatened the foundation of the City Hall building. In addition, the landscaping was in desperate need of refreshing. The City collaborated with Watershed Management Group to design an attractive garden, which is primarily irrigated from the runoff with approximately 42,000 gallons of rainwater annually. The runoff also supports a beautiful arrangement of trees, shrubs and groundcover. These features use natural processes to filter non-point source pollutants carried by storm water.

EXPRESS SCRIPTSExpress Scripts practices sustainability by improving and expanding environmental initiatives, increasing energy efficiencies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, all while ensuring continued service to the needs of clients, patients, employees and community.

Express Scripts’ pharmacies recycle and shred plastic manufacturer pill bottles and caps to ensure patient privacy. The recycling center recycles the plastic bottles and caps, as well as corrugated cardboard boxes. The recycling center sends the pallets of cardboard to Flagstaff, to be remade into commonly used brown bathroom paper towels. In 2016, the Tempe location recycled 298 tons of pill bottles, 1,718 lbs. of light bulbs and 946 lbs. of used small batteries.

So far, in 2017, Express Scripts donated several large picnic tables to a local pet shelter to use in pet adoption areas. They held an “Operation Hydration” bottled water drive for the City of Tempe Fire Department and were able to donate 1,435 bottles of water to help those in need over the hot summer months.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY – MORE THAN 1,500 EMPLOYEES

CHARLES SCHWABCharles Schwab is passionate about the environment, both nationally and locally. Nationwide, nine service centers have upgraded their facilities with Energy Star rated commercial refrigerators, microwaves, freezers and ice machines. Locally, the Peak building has achieved a 98% Energy Star rating in 2016 with plans to renew again this year. The cafeteria, which serves more than 700 people daily, added four compost bins.

Staying true to our southwestern location, Charles Schwab is removing 1,600 square feet of grass and plans to replace it with natural desert landscape. They retrofitted

212 soffit can lights to LEDs. Recycling efforts have deferred approximately 38 tons of recycled paper from entering the trash, which saved 638 trees, 415,350 gallons of water and 121.05 yards of landfill. Security and maintenance teams use four electric carts to reduce emissions.

Employees celebrated Earth Day in April, providing 23 60-gallon bins for personal shredding and successfully filled them all. Charles Schwab hosts an annual electronic recycle event each November. This past year, employees recycled personal electronic equipment equaling 11 pallets of electronics (totaling 6,065 pounds).

COSTCO WHOLESALECostco's sustainability commitment focuses on managing their worldwide business in an energy efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Efforts to find efficiencies that lower costs, use fewer resources and generate less waste help the company to reduce their carbon footprint. Costco pays attention to the environment through product sourcing and packaging, as well as how the products affect the environment.

Costco sustainable packaging goals aim to protect the product, comply with regulations and reduce materials. Costco reuses packaging and packaging for much of the produce and fresh food departments is made from recycled water bottles. Costco has redesigned many containers, allowing them to fit on a pallet, and reducing the number of trucks needed to complete delivery.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE - MOST CREATIVE BULLETIN BOARD

BECHTEL CORPORATIONLast October, Bechtel used a candy bar theme for their board. Different candy bars were decorated with catchphrases, along with the GRH program, Vehicle Emissions Inspection program, ShareTheRide posters and more.

Candy bar catchphrases included, “Rally together and Share the Ride”, “Every day is a PAYDAY when you share the ride”, “You’ll SNICKER at traffic congestion when you share the ride” and “Put ONE HUNDRED GRAND in your pocket – save on gas.”

MOHAVE MIDDLE SCHOOLMohave Middle School designed a bulletin board using The Hulk as inspiration and to draw attention to TRP efforts, resulting in more program inquiries. It was fun to create the bulletin board and staff members gave input on the design. For example, staff members would stop by just to check on progress. Once complete, the staff went out of their way to walk by the TRP bulletin board to see it. People now make an effort to stop at the board to read the information, instead of ignoring it. Our goal and hope of having a super cool bulletin board involving more people was achieved!

NAVAJO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLNavajo's theme is “Share the work, share the ride.” At Navajo, employees share the work and love to share the ride. They promote ridesharing and helping the environment. With this commitment, everyone wins! Benefits include new friends, saving time, having a less crowded parking lot, and most importantly, reducing pollution levels and helping the environment. Employees were encouraged to take the pledge and thrive with a call to action: Commute now Buffalos!

2017 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSThe following highlights include market research conducted by WestGroup Research and accomplishments from travel reduction efforts in fiscal year 2017.

Total alternative mode usage, including teleworking and compressed schedules, stands at 44%. As a percentage of trips, alternative modes (including teleworking and compressed work schedules) accounted for 30% of residents’ trips.

There were 387 vanpools in active service as of June 30, 2017. In FY17, vanpool riders saved nearly 57.3 million miles of travel and 2.2 million gallons of fuel. To frame these environmental savings, 57.3 million miles is the same distance as circumnavigating the earth nearly 2,300 times and 2.2 million gallons of fuel is the yield of more than 120,000 barrels of US-refined crude oil. Driving non-stop at a travel speed of 65 miles per hour, it would take approximately 101 years to drive 57.3 million miles.

Valley Metro had nearly 66 million transit boardings.

Attitudes toward advertising that encourages people to use alternative modes of transportation remain stable and positive; three of four residents (75%) viewed this type of advertising as very or somewhat favorable.

The number of active users of ShareTheRide.com is nearly 35,707 active users (slightly more than the 35,276 active users at the end of FY15).
