National Ocean Scholarship Program What is the National Ocean Scholarship Program? As part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) program’s continuing effort to recognize individual achievement as part of the NOSB program, the Consortium for Ocean Leadership offers the National Ocean Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is to provide tuition assistance for NOSB students who have an interest in pursuing an ocean or a marine related topic area in their post-high school education. Criteria for the National Ocean Scholarship Program All applicants for the National Ocean Scholarship Program must meet the following requirements:
Participate in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl at least once during their high school career Pursue a career goal in the ocean sciences or a marine-related field Demonstrate academic success and integrity throughout their high school career Be scheduled to graduate high school in the spring of 2016
Application Process for the National Ocean Scholarship Program Qualified students are required to submit the following materials:
Completed application -available on the NOSB website at www.nosb.org Official High School Transcript(s)
NOTE: If the student’s GPA is NOT on a 4.0 scale, the student MUST provide a conversion to the 4.0 grade scale signed by their high school principal or counselor
Official score sheet from either the SAT or the ACT 2 required essays – guidelines are available at www.nosb.org Two (2) letters of recommendation [One must be from an academic source such as a teacher or a

The 2016 Living on the Ocean
Planet Video ContestOur Changing Ocean:
Science for Strong Coastal CommunitiesHumans have long been drawn to the coast. Shorelines provide access to food, transportation,
inspiration, and opportunities for exploration. However, the desirability of coastal living leads to mounting pressure on the very resources that make it so attractive. Escalating populations, erosion,
more frequent flooding, development, storm impacts, and pollution are among the stressors that impact the protection, economic revenue, security, food, and healthy recreational opportunities provided by our nation’s coasts. Coastal communities need to adapt and plan to preserve the way of life and the natural resources they value. Student submissions should highlight the science needed to sustain strong coastal communities, including: improving community awareness, solutions to erosion and increased development, restoration of coastlines, protection of estuarine ecosystems and services, and improving coastal disaster projection, preparedness and response.
Who is eligible?Any student enrolled in a high school is eligible to submit a video. We encourage students to work in teams!
Top Prize:Each member of the 1st Place team will receive a Kodak Playsport to encourage future multi-media endeavors!
Submission deadline March 18, 2016.Full contest rules and guidelines can be found at:

Alaska Tsunami National Ocean Sciences Bowl
Welcome to the 19th annual competition
February 26 – 28, 2016 • Seward, Alaska
The Tsunami Bowl is Alaska’s regional version of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, a nation-wide academic competition for high school students that encourages learning about all aspects of marine science. The program began in 1998 and is hosted each year by the Seward Marine Center and the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. The Tsunami Bowl strives to develop relationships between researchers, students, and teachers. The competition and related activities during the three day event encourage students to continue to study fisheries and marine science during their post-secondary education, and to consider a career in a marine-related occupation.
Once again, included in the 2016 Tsunami Bowl is the research component of the competition, in which teams of four or five students prepare a 15-page research paper that is submitted in December and present a 20-minute oral presentation at the Tsunami Bowl in Seward. For the 2016 research project students were asked to describe coastal resilience and its importance to Alaska. The research paper score will be used to seed the quiz competition round robin divisions. The total research project score, a combination of paper score and oral presentation score, will be used along with the round robin quiz results to seed the final championship and consolation quiz brackets. The final quiz competition will determine the overall Tsunami Bowl Champion.
In the quiz competition, students must be the first to “buzz-in” for the opportunity to answer a multiple-choice or short-answer question. The game is organized as a series of matches in a round-robin/elimination format. In each match, two teams compete against each other and the clock, trying to be the fastest to answer the toss-up questions. Team challenge questions, more complex questions which require critical analysis and written answers, test students’ critical thinking skills.
The winning team of the 2016 Tsunami Bowl will have all expenses paid to travel to Morehead City North Carolina April 21 - 24 to compete against other regional winners from across the United States.
To encourage participation by students of an artistic persuasion, the Tsunami Bowl includes an optional art show. The NOSB Ocean Connection Juried Art Show is open to all "ocean-theme" artwork created by high school students (grades 9–12) from schools participating in the NOSB competition. Students with art entries do not have to be members of an NOSB team to submit art. The show will be on display at the Alaska SeaLife Center during the month of March.
For more information about past, present and future Tsunami Bowls, please check out the Tsunami Bowl web site at: http://seagrant.uaf.edu/nosb/index.html
