FSBGC Recipients $30,000 AWARDED FOR COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS Dr. Lee Johnson, Emergency Room services director at Sparks Hospital was guest speaker for the annual Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club College Scholarship luncheon on June 18 at the Holiday Inn. Johnson was a recipient of a College Scholarship through the Boys & Girls Club program in 1988, 1989 & 1990. Recipients of the 2007-2008 FSBGC schol- arship awards were announced at the lunch- eon. The program began in 1985 through the vision of Jim and June Alexander. Sin ce that time, more than 200 Boys & Girls Club mem- bers have received funding for College. Applicants must have participated at the FSBGC as member or volunteer for a mini- mum of two years. Academic excellence, Club participation, and need are key ingredients that committee judges consider when making recipient selections The FSBGC Scholarship committee conducts interviews with all new applicants each year. Renewal applicants must be a full-time student and maintain a required semester grade point average. “The Scholarship committee is very impressed by the number of quality applicants we receive each year”, said committee chair Janice Powell. “There are several outstanding young people involved who are going to do great tings with their lives” she added. Application forms for the 2008-2009 selection process become available in January. BOYS & GIRLS CLUBFormer Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member and cur-

rent United States Representative John Boozman, visitedwith Club members during a recent tour of the Evans Boys& Girls Club. Boozman is currently the United StatesRepresentative for the Third District in Arkansas.

Congressman Boozman, who was a member of theJeffrey unit while growing up in Fort Smith, was in FortSmith to promote a Partnership for Prescription Assistance.The program helps find medications for free of discountedrates to help families and patients in need.

Boozman recalled his days of playing sports at the Club.After graduation from Northside High, he attended theUniversity of Arkansas where he was a member of theRazorback football team. His offensive line coach atArkansas at the time was Joe Gibbs, who is now consid-ered an NFL Coaching legend. Frank Broyles was the headcoach at Arkansas during Boozmans years for theRazorbacks.

Last fall, Boozman introduced 2006 FSBGC Youth of theYear national finalist Alyse Eady to members of Congressduring a special breakfast hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs ofAmerica. Eady was also a guest of the President and FirstLady in the Oval office.

In Washington D.C., Boozman serves on three Housecommittees: Veterans Affairs, Transportation andInfrastructure and Foreign Affairs. In the 109th Congress,he was appointed Chairman of the Veterans EconomicOpportunity Subcommittee.

FSBGC Mourns LossOf Judy Manning

Long time Boys & Girls club staff member JudyManning died June 17, 2007 at the age of 62.Manning worked at the FSBGC for 18 years, andwas an assistant unit director at the Stephensand Jeffrey units.

For the past 10 years, shewas employed by Abil-ities Unlimited. Judy wasinstrumental in guidinghundreds of young peoplethrough her communityservice, church work anddedicated Boys & GirlsClub activity.

She is survived by her husband H. C. Manning,one daughter, Vanessa (Lee) Dorsey, two grand-sons and one sister. Judy also raised fournephews, Otis, Michael, James and RobertHodge, along with her niece Patricia Perry. Shewas also very active in helping raise severalgreat nieces and nephews.

“Judy was a very hard worker and loyalemployee” said Jerry Glidewell. FSBGC execu-tive director. “She will be deeply missed by herfamily and friends” he added. Manning wasknown to be a strong disciplinarian who had acompassionate and soft heart. She influencedcountless children throughout the north sidecommunity. During her tenure with the Boys &Girls Club, Manning assisted with variousadministrative duties at the Jeffrey and Stephensunits.

In 2007, she was honored by Mayor Ray Bakerwith a “Good Neighbors Award.” Judy fought acourageous battle with cancer. Her involvementin the community will be felt in many genera-tions. She took great pride in helping shape thelives of several family members, includingThomas “TJ” James, Rodney Perry and FredPerry.

The funeral service for Manning was held atthe 9th Street Baptist Church in Fort Smith. Astanding room crowd attended the memorialwhich payed tribute to her lifetime of devotedservice to others.

BOOK FAIR HOSTED BYGOLDTRAP-GARDNER UNIT

As part of the 2007 FSBGC Summer program,Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club hosted aScholastic Book Fair, June 11-22. Club memberswere invited to “Book Fair Beach” and were veryenthusiastic in their preparation. As a result, theClub sold over $500 in books, educationalresources and games.

On June 14, Family Night was held at the Club.Parents enjoyed playing games, eating refresh-ments and shopping for books with their children.They participated in a scavenger hunt and puttogether Klutz Build-a-Book kits. The kits allowbuilders to “publish” their own illustrated stories.Some of the children made books to give theirdads for Father’s Day. The next “Book Fair” isscheduled for December at Goldtrap. “Lean On Me” Program InfluencedScholarship Recipient Jacob Kirksey

Back in 1997, Jacob Kirksey moved to Fort Smithwith his mother. Her goal was to get her son away fromthe violence and crime from they had experienced in anurban Midwest setting. After the move, Jacob’s momsigned him up at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. SoonKirksey became a participant in the “Lean On Me” pro-gram, which matches young people with adult mentors.Weekly meetings are held at the Club.

For 3 years, Jacob was mentored by volunteersthrough the “Lean On Me” program. Helping providepositive role models for children is one of the goals ofthe program. This fall, Kirksey will be attendingMissouri Southern State and majoring in CriminalJustice.

“EXPLORING ARKANSAS”A SUMMER PROGRAM FAVORITEEach weekday of the summer, you will find a Fort Smith

Boys & Girls Club van full of members headed for a fundestination. For more than 25 years, the Exploring Arkansasprogram has been one of the most popular activities at theBoys & Girls Club.

The FSBGC receives annual grant money from the TillesFoundation to help support the program. Daily field tripsinclude: Janet Huckabee Nature Center, Alma Water Park,Devil’s Den State Park, Wild Wilderness Safari andLokomotion. “Many of the children who participate get toexperience these destinations for the very first time” saidJeff Wasson, coordinator of the program. “ExploringArkansas provides a weekly fun adventure for Club mem-bers” he added.

Field trips are rotated among the four Boys & Girls Clubunits. Participants are required to complete parent permis-sion forms.

SIGNUPS UNDERWAYKIWANIS BOYS CAMP

SET FOR AUGUST 5 - 10For the past 68 years, Kiwanis Summer Camp has pro-

vided a “free” week long camping experience for boys ages8-11. The annual camp, which is conducted at DwightMission near Sallisaw, Oklahoma, will be held August 5 -11.

The local Kiwanis Club sponsors the event. Kimmons Jr.High teacher Shawn Hinkle will be the 2007 camp director.Stevie Black will assist Hinkle. Black has worked at thecamp for the past 26 years. Application forms for the “free”summer camp are available at all four FSBGC locations.

Volunteers from the Kiwanis Club provide the entirecamping experience at no cost to participants. Campers willlearn the basics of hiking, canoeing, fishing, swimming andseveral other outdoor activities.

Kiwanis Camp was held for years at Lake Fort Smith andthen moved to Fort Chaffee. This is the second year that thecamp will be held at Dwight Mission, which is a conferencecenter that sits on 176 acres.

Swimming is an all-time favorite summer activity forClub members. Hayley Cochrane flys down a slide at theAlma Water Park during an Exploring Arkansas Field trip.

“TRIPLE PLAY” GRANT“Helping kids learn healthy lifestyles” is what

Planters Peanuts plant manager Keith Nix wants tospread throughout the community. NIx was on handduring a recent $1,000 presentation to the Fort SmithBoys & Girls Club from Planters.

Planters is part of Kraft Foods. Coca-cola and Kraftare two major sponsors of the Boys & Girls Clubs ofAmerica Triple Play program. Triple Play demon-strates how eating right, keeping fit and forming pos-itive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle forClub members.

Participants in “Triple Play” learn about good nutri-tion and how to make smart meal and snack choic-es. Members receive coaching in sports leagues andfun activities, developing their coordination and lead-ership skills.

Triple play is a program designed to promotehealth and wellness for Boys & Girls Club membersages 6-18. It is a multi-facet program that helpsyoung become healthy and active. There are threemajor components of Triple Play: mind, body andsoul.

The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club also receivesTriple Play funding through a federal OJP grantprocessed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. TheOJP grant includes support of the Money Mattersprogram and Goals for Graduation.

KEYSTONE CONFERENCENine teens from the Stephens and Jeffrey units

attended the Southwest Regional KeystoneConference in Richardson, TX on July 12-14. The“Leaders on the Rise” Keystone Club from FortSmith, Arkansas was one of several groups partici-pating. Clubs from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, NewMexico, Colorado, Kansas and Montana also attend-ed.

“This was a great way for our teen members to seewhat’s going on with Keystone Club around theregion” said J.T. West, Jeffrey unit director. West andStephens unit director Roneka Jackson chaperonedthe teens on the trip. Participants were treated to anevening at Six Flags over Texas.

148 GOLFERS PARTICIPATE INANNUAL ALUMNI TOURNAMENT

Net proceeds from the 2007 FSBGC Alumni &Friends Golf tournament will help support activitiesand services at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. Thisyear’s event will gross just over $30,000, with net pro-ceeds estimated to reach $20,000. 160 golfers on 40teams competed in the annual Alumni event on June 11at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Alma.

Through the support of First National Bank,Rebsamen Insurance and Rheem, the golf tourney hasbecome one of the favorite charity fund raisers in theFort Smith community. “We are very pleased with theturn-out” said tourney co-chair Darren Wyatt. “For thepast 11 years, this tournament has been one of the localfavorites for golfers” he added.

The four person scramble event featured a morningand afternoon flight. Special awards were presented forclosest to the pin, long drive, most accurate drive and aputting contest. A hole in one for a new Mercury wassponsored by Putnam Lincoln-Mercury.

“KERWINS” CLAIMS THIRDSTRAIGHT KATZER TITLEKerwins American Legion baseball team erased a 8-3 deficit

while exploding to defeat Bentonville 16-9 in the championshipgame of the 2007 Maurice Katzer Classic. Matt O’Neal went 4 for5 at the plate, including three doubles and a two-homer to left cen-ter field. O’Neal also scored four times and drove in three runs.Chad Knight picked up the pitching victory while Hank Rogersand Zach Mitchell both went 3 for 4 while batting. Ian Gilley alsohomered off of the football concession stand in left field.

In advancing to the finals, Kerwins defeated Wilburton,Oklahoma, 12-6. Other teams participating in the 26th annualKatzer Classic at Hunts Park included Van Buren, Three Rivers(OK), Russellville, FSCL and Tahlequah (OK).

The Katzer Classic is one of the longest running AmericanLegion tournaments in the region. The event is named after thelate Maurice Katzer, a FSBGC Hall of Fame inductee.

Coach Denny Lundquist praised his team for their ability tobattle back from early deficits. “Our hitters kept battling and theteam never gave up” said Lundquist, who is in his third season ofcoaching the Kerwins squad. He is assisted by Randy Milam andTim Lundquist.

RYAN FRANKLIN SIGNSCONTRACT EXTENSION WITH

ST. LOUIS CARDINALSFormer Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club baseball all-star Ryan

Franklin recently signed a contract extension with the majorleague baseball St. Louis Cardinals. Franklin, who is an 8 year vet-eran of the majors, has had an outstanding first half of the seasonwith the Cards. His first half stats include: 38 games pitched (44innings), 1.23 ERA, 17 strike-outs, 4 walks and a record of 3-0.

A native of Spiro, Oklahoma, Franklin was a member of theEvans Boys & Girls Club as a youth. This spring, the Boys & GirlsClub honored Franklin by hosting a special “Ryan Franklin Day.”Ryan signed autographs and talked to fans at the Club for morethan 2 hours.

Franklin pitched for the Seattle Mariners for 6 seasons. Lastyear, he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and theCincinnati Reds.
