Discover the world.

The desire to travel is one of our most

gratifying traits. It drives us to visit exotic

cities and countries. And those of us

who love to discover the world’s scenic

wonders for ourselves are the fi rst to

reach out for a versatile, extremely

portable camera developed especially

for active people.

Olympus is a leading manufacturer, with

decades of experience in producing

high-quality compact cameras and SLRs.

Photographers value Olympus cameras

for their excellent design, compactness

and functionality as well as their ease of

use. The E-420 is no exception. Just one

look and you’ll realise that technology is

more than just an end in itself. The camera

is an ideal companion, whether you’re

travelling to exotic destinations or going on

weekend trips to Europe’s major cities.

Like no other camera, the E-420 combines

the sophisticated features of a professional

digital SLR and the ease of use of a compact

camera. Not only that, the E-420 is one of

the smallest and lightest D-SLRs in the

world. This means it not only fi ts perfectly

in your hands, it’s also compact enough

for the smallest bag. Matched with the thin

25 mm 1:2.8 pancake lens, the E-420

will even fi t in your jacket pocket, giving you

fast access for impromptu snapshots. In

short, a camera with built-in intuition.

Follow your intuition.

A camera for a mobile world.

The easiest things in life are self-explanatory.

Olympus designed the E-420 with this

principle in mind. If you’re often on the go,

you have to choose your equipment

accordingly. It must be small, ergonomic

and easy to use. Needless to say, this

is also what you look for in a camera that’s

with you at every turn. The E-420 is the

A perfect preview of your picture.

The autofocus Live View function incorporated

in the E-420 lets you compose pictures

using the LCD, as you would with a compact

digital camera. Thanks to this feature, you

always have a perfect preview of your subject.

It allows you to see whether you’ve chosen

the right angle for your shot and shows you

in real-time on which parts of the subject the

camera is focusing. With the HyperCrystal II

LCD, you have constant control of exposure

and white balance, and can also set the

colour saturation and contrast of the display.

Accurate pictures even in diffi cult situations.

Thanks to two technical innovations,

the E-420 lets you take perfect pictures

even in the most challenging lighting

conditions. The camera automatically

detects deep shadows in your picture

and compensates by brightening these

areas (Shadow Adjustment Technology).

In addition, with Face Detection Technology,

the E-420 guarantees accurate pictures

with its ability to recognise up to eight

faces while automatically focusing and

optimising exposure.

Brilliant colours on the LCD.

The E-420’s large 6.9 cm HyperCrystal II LCD

gives you clear, realistic previews with brilliant

colours. Colour changes are also visible on

the LCD. With a viewing angle of 176 degrees,

the LCD can be viewed from virtually any

angle, and you are free to compose your shot

without having to look through the viewfi nder.

This means you can shoot from almost any

position, whether from over your head, from

the ground or around a corner, without losing

sight of your subject.

The E-420’s large 6.9 cm HyperCrystal II LCD allows you to

track all the camera’s settings.

Get up close without straining yourself. With Live View,

you can take pictures from the ground up without having to

hold the viewfi nder to your eye.

Without Shadow Adjustment Technology.

Shadow Adjustment Technology brightens dim areas of the

image so they appear naturally lit.

Without Face Detection.

With Face Detection, each face is perfectly in focus.

Get a picture of the future.

Answers to the questions of tomorrow.

When you choose a digital SLR today, you

want more than just the perfect equipment.

You also need to know how well the camera’s

system will stand the test of time. With the

E-420, Olympus offers an excellent solution

for both these demands.

A new standard in digital photography.

Like all other D-SLRs in the E-System

family, the E-420 is based on the Four

Thirds Standard. This is a uniform

technical standard agreed upon and

supported by numerous renowned

manufacturers. Because all cameras

and lenses in the Four Thirds System

are compatible with each other, the

E-420 is a future-proof camera. There

are currently more than 30 Four Thirds lenses

to choose from for the E-420, and more will

follow, all meeting the highest professional

standards.

More compact cameras and better image quality.

Thanks to the Four Thirds System, the

E-420 is signifi cantly more compact than

its competitors and fully tailored to the

needs of digital photography. The system

guarantees maximum sharpness and

brightness over the entire image and

improves communication between the

camera and lens. These are advantages

you can see and feel: the cameras as

well as the lenses are smaller and lighter

without compromising image quality.

Change lenses as often as you want.

Even if you use many different lenses, the

E-420 is ideally equipped. A highly effective

dust protection system protects the camera

from dust entering the body when you

change lenses. This feature gives you the

freedom to change lenses as often as you

want without having to worry about dust

ruining your pictures.

Without integrated dust protection.

Technology that makes many things easier, and others possible for the very fi rst time.

Sequential shooting at a rate of 3.5 frames per second.

Now you can shoot even faster. The E-420

allows you to take a series of shots at a

rate of 3.5 frames per second. This means

you will never miss that crucial frame when

shooting dynamic action sequences.

Built-in pop-up fl ash and wireless fl ash.

With the E-420’s built-in fl ash, you are

prepared for any situation. It not only makes

sure you have the right lighting, but it can

also be used as pre-fl ash to eliminate

annoying red-eye effects. And if you ever

need to illuminate your subject from a

different angle, you can attach an external

fl ash such as the FL-36R and control it

wirelessly from your camera. (1., 2., 3.)

Professional AEL/AFL control.

Automatic or manual, it’s your choice. You

can freely enable or disable a range of

presets for exposure (AE lock) and focusing

(AF lock). This allows you to defi ne the

most important features of your subjects to

suit your individual needs.

Slideshow.

Impress people in comfort. You can connect

the E-420 to your TV and view your pictures

in a slideshow from the comfort of your own

couch.

TruePic III image processor.

Faster is better. The E-420 features the new

TruePic III image processor, which handles

your pictures faster and produces crystal

clear images.

Depth-of-fi eld preview.

You have full control of image sharpness

right from the start. Before you press

the shutter button, the E-420 allows

you to control the depth of fi eld in the

optical viewfi nder as well as on the

HyperCrystal II LCD.
