Farnham Royal e-Letter

Dear Parents

Tomorrow we will celebrate Speech Day; this will be our eighth Speech Day with Year 6 leavers and it promises to be a very memorable occasion, especially if the weather remains settled.

Our first set of Year 6 leavers in the July 2010 Speech Day have just finished their A Levels and are hopefully progressing towards university in September. From a personal viewpoint, thinking of that Year 6, it really only seems like yesterday since that first celebration.

Tomorrow we will also host our 85th anniversary celebration. We marked our 80th anniversary by the planting of an oak tree. This time Reverend Latham will be planting a eucalyptus tree in the last week of term, one which will hopefully grow and flourish for many years to come.

With best wishes

Year 6 Educational Visit to Braywick Nature Centre

On 22nd June, Year 6 visited Braywick Nature Centre in Maidenhead to explore how the resident wildlife and plantlife have adapted to their surroundings. Year 6 have been studying adaptation in their Science lessons with Mrs Penn, who accompanied them on the trip.

Reception and Year 1 Educational Visit to College Lake

On Monday, our Reception and Year 1 pupils travelled to Tring to visit College Lake, a wildlife and nature reserve with lots of living things to see.

Reception enjoyed a themed trail about how to properly care for the environment and how wildlife and plantlife gain the things they need to survive. They also took along their favourite teddy bear to enjoy a picnic.

Year 1 took part in a sensory walk in the main garden, along with a nature detective activity which included hunting for bugs, making micro parks and pond dipping.

Cricket v Thorpe House

On Wednesday 28th June, the Year 5 and 6 cricket team played Thorpe House away at their school. Both teams’ batting and bowling was excellent. Tim and Rushil both took wickets.

After a competitive game, Dair House School won by 25 runs. We also had yummy hot dogs for tea. - Rushil Kumar (Year 6)

This Week’s Sport

Cricket v Thorpe House

The Year 3 and 4 girls played their last rounders match of the season against St Bernard’s on Tuesday. Although they lost, they really began to look like a team. The girls covered for each other when fielding and they began to take chances and run for rounders. Gabriella took on the role of bowler and did so brilliantly, alongside also scoring a rounder. Nosi had her first try as backstop and was a credit to the team. The final score was 5½ to 9.

Well done to all the girls as there was some great play. - SF

Year 5 and 6 played a match against Crown House on Wednesday. The stakes were high, as one of the opposing team has played county cricket since she was in Year 3 and she knew how to hit good rounders.

Not to be outdone, Seher came in to bat and hit the ball just as far as her opponent, scoring at least five rounders. Some super team work again but the girls were sadly outplayed and lost 15½ to 19. The team’s last match of the season is next Tuesday and we’re all looking forward to another good game. - SF

Rounders v St Bernard’s

Rounders v Crown House

On Tuesday 27th June we played cricket against Thorpe House at home. Their team were very good, but we did our best. The opposing team managed to bowl our batters out three times, which was really impressive.

In the end, Thorpe House won by 72 runs but we were given brownies after the match, which were very good. - Ewan Bull (Year 3)

Environment Day

On Friday, the children enjoyed a range of activities relating to the environment.

Reception children became ‘Creepy Crawly Investigators’, finding out about invertebrates and making their own wormery. They also created a giant pictogram and talked about how their findings linked to their topic on dinosaurs.

Years 1 and 2 took on the Recycling Team Challenge, exploring a range of recyclable materials using a picture orienteering course.

Years 3 and 4 used the story of ‘The Lorax’ to better understand the positive and negative impacts we have on the environment. They linked

‘The Lorax’ to modern habitat destruction, and explored a range of food chains and the impact habitat destruction has on these. Years 3 and 4 also made bug hotels to support the minibeasts living in our school grounds.

Years 5 and 6 were also inspired by ‘The Lorax’ but instead linked it to carbon footprints and the carbon cycle. They learnt about different types of environmental spheres and played a game in the role of a carbon atom.

First Aid

On Wednesday, the First Aid Club were joined by a trainer from St John’s Ambulance who taught them how to properly administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, on a casualty. The First Aid Club is made up of Year 5 and 6 children, however for this very important lesson, the whole of Year 6 were invited to join in.

In addition to learning the CPR procedure, the trainer from St John’s Ambulance talked about how to handle the pressure of dealing with a casualty, and general tips for managing an emergency situation.

Mrs Christian, who runs the First Aid Club, wanted to congratulate the First Aid Club for how well they did in learning a very tricky, but potentially life-saving skill. All of the children received a certificate and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Music Assembly

Once again, our amazingly talented pupils had the chance to showcase their musical skills to staff, pupils and parents. The audience was treated to singing, flute, piano, drums and trumpet. Jamie Ledger, our resident guitar teacher, also played a rendition of ‘Misirlou’ (the opening musical piece from ‘Pulp Fiction’, which you will recognise the second you hear it!) on his electric guitar. Jamie is available to teach more guitar pupils from September. He is an excellent teacher, so if your child is interested, please contact Mrs Bull for more information.
