Letter from Fr. Paul Joseph Spellman

    He has Risen! That is the message of our Lord and Savior that we celebrate today!  For three years the disciples witnessed the miracles. They heard the parables.  And they received the Good News of the King-dom of God. But then, Jesus was arrested.  He was scourged with whips, and then crowned with thorns.  Then He was given a cross to carry through the streets of Jerusalem, and was then nailed to that cross where He remained un l He gave up His Spirit and returned to His Father in heaven.      So, the people of Jerusalem asked, "What do we do with His Body?"  According to the Gospel of John, it was Nicodemus, who had secretly come to see Jesus at night, and Joseph of Arimathea, who was secretly a disciple of Jesus because of his fear, who were the ones who asked Pilate for the Body of Jesus.        I have o en pondered why it was these two men, and not the Apostles, who buried Jesus.  The answer is the overriding aspect of fear.  The disciples abandoned Jesus when He was arrested, and the two men who buried Him were also in a state of anxiety and the resul ng secrecy that surrounded their ac ons.      Does fear rule our lives and control our decisions?  Does fear prevent us from living our faith and sharing our faith with others?  Today faith seems to be constantly pushed aside as if it were not necessary in our world.  It seems to have been replaced by greed, wealth, social media, entertainment, and the resultant comforts of life. But, we know be er!      If you want to see people of courage, look at the women who went to the Tomb so early on that first Easter Sunday morning.  They wanted to be there at first light, because they were seeking the Light of the World.  At that point they s ll didn't understand the message of Resurrec on, but, when the angel at the Tomb spoke to them, it all became clear.  He has Risen!     Today, throughout our world, people of faith are gathering with families and loved ones to celebrate the Risen Christ.  It is His message of eternal life that binds us together.  It is His message of Salva on that gives us the confidence not to cower in fear, but to walk confidently in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior.     During this Easter season, let us take some  me to reflect on the events of that first Easter Sunday morn-ing, and not to live our lives in fear and uncertainty, but to live our lives in the confidence in the Risen Christ!  May the Lord con nue to bless us always and in all ways,  Father Paul Joseph Easter Sunday

Mensaje del Padre Paul Joseph Spellman

¡El ha Resucitado! ¡Ese es el men-saje de nuestro Señor y Salvador que cele-bramos hoy! Durante tres años, los discí-pulos fueron testigos de los milagros. Es-cucharon las parábolas. Y recibieron la Buena Nueva del Reino de Dios. Pero lue-go, Jesús fue arrestado. Fue azotado con látigos y luego coronado de espinas. Luego se le dio una cruz para que la llevara por las calles de Jerusalén, y luego fue clavado en esa cruz donde permaneció hasta que entregó Su Espíritu y regresó a Su Padre en el cielo. Entonces, la gente de Jerusalén preguntó: "¿Qué hacemos con Su Cuerpo?" Se-gún el evangelio de Juan, fueron Nicode-mo, que había venido a ver a Jesús en se-creto por la noche, y José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús en secreto a causa de su miedo, quienes fueron los que le pidieron a Pilato el Cuerpo de Jesús. A menudo me he preguntado por qué fue-ron estos dos hombres, y no los Apóstoles, quienes enterraron a Jesús. La respuesta es el aspecto primordial del miedo. Los discípulos abandonaron a Jesús cuando fue arrestado, y los dos hombres que lo enterraron también estaban en un estado de ansiedad y el secreto resultante que ro-deaba sus acciones. ¿El miedo gobierna nuestras vidas y controla nuestras decisiones? ¿El miedo nos impide vivir nuestra fe y com-partir nuestra fe con los demás? Hoy la fe parece estar constantemente apartada co-mo si no fuera necesaria en nuestro mun-do. Parece haber sido reemplazado por la codicia, la riqueza, las redes sociales, el entretenimiento y las comodidades resul-tantes de la vida. Pero, ¡lo sabemos mejor! Si quieres ver gente valiente, mira a las mujeres que fueron a la Tumba tan temprano ese primer Domingo

de Pascua por la mañana. Querían es-tar allí a la primera luz, porque buscaban la Luz del Mundo. En ese momento to-davía no entendían el mensaje de la Resu-rrección, pero cuando el ángel de la Tum-ba les habló, todo quedó claro. ¡El ha Re-sucitado! Hoy, en todo nuestro mundo, las perso-nas de fe se están reuniendo con sus fami-lias y seres queridos para celebrar al Cristo Resucitado. Es Su mensaje de vida eterna lo que nos une. Es Su mensaje de salvación el que nos da la confianza pa-ra no acobardarnos por el miedo, sino pa-ra caminar con confianza en los pasos de nuestro Señor y Salvador. Durante este tiempo de Pascua, tomemos un tiempo para reflexionar sobre los even-tos de esa primera mañana de Domingo de Pascua, y no para vivir nuestras vidas con miedo e incertidumbre, ¡sino para vi-vir nuestras vidas en la confianza en Cristo Resucitado! Que el Señor nos siga bendiciendo siempre y en todos los sentidos,

¡Que sorpresa tan grande sería para cualquiera de nosotros si un día al visitar el cementerio la tumba de un familiar la encontramos abierta, sin el cuerpo den-tro y oímos de otras personas que nuestro ser querido ha resucitado, que ya no está muerto, sino que vive! ¡Y cuál no sería nuestra alegría el poder encontrarnos de nuevo con él, no como un fantasma que asusta en el medio de la noche, sino en l paz del mediodía, y vol-ver a comer con él, y reír con él y disfrutar de su pre-sencia! esa fue la experiencia de los apóstoles, de la primera iglesia. Jesús fue para ellos el ser más querido. Recordarán que El les decía que “aquel que ame a sus padres o a su madre o a sus hijos, o a sus padres más que a mí, no es digno de mí”. Jesús fue el Maestro, el amigo, el que perdonaba sus pecados, el que les dio nueva seguridad y luz en sus vidas. En Jesús habían depositado oda su confianza y toda su esperanza. Ellos creían que Jesús era el Mesías prometido y, sin embargo, tuvieron que contemplar el espectáculo degradante de ver a Jesús morir como un delincuente. La muerte de Jesús, con todo su horror, con las veja-ciones, con los insultos, con todas las humillaciones recibidas, aparece como una contradicción de todo lo que ellos esperaban. Habían aprendido en las escrituras que el reino de Dios iba a ser instaurado por el Mesías, y Jesús era el Mesías. Y después de muerto sin haber instaurado el Reino, ¿qué iba a pasar? Sin embargo, la mañana del primer día de la semana, día que ahora llamamos domingo en memoria de Je-sús, al hacer lo que muchos de nosotros hemos hecho con nuestros difuntos, o sea, regresar a honrar su me-moria, esta primera iglesia se encuentra con el formi-dable portento de que su ser más querido, su amigo, su maestro, no está ya en la tumba. Los ángeles le anun-cian a las mujeres que Jesús ha resucitado. Los apósto-les Pedro y Juan llegan corriendo para comprobar que

en efecto ya no está Jesús en el sepulcro. Ms tarde Je-sús comienza a aparecérseles a todos. ¡Cuál no serían su alegría! ¡Cuál no sería el gozo de todos los amigos de Jesús al ver de nuevo al Maestro resucitado! Y ver-lo resucitado no como una visión en medio de la no-che, no como un fantasma que aparece en la penum-bra, no como una aparición que asusta, sino en la sen-cillez d las ropas de un hortelano, como se apareció a María Magdalena, o en medio del cenáculo donde se apareció a los discípulos, o comiendo con ellos a la orilla del lago. Aun llevando a cabo el más grande de sus milagros, Jesús elige sencillez, no trata de impre-sionar a sus amigos ni los asusta; se presenta lleno de amor por ellos, para que por fin vean y recuperen su confianza en El. Este milagro cambia por completo la historia de la hu-manidad. La Resurrección de Jesús es un grito de vic-toria. Jesús, el Mesías, ha triunfado ante la muerte, ante el pecado. Por tanto, la muerte no se presenta ya como un final aterrador de la existencia, sino como un paso, como un escalón. La Pascua es: el dejar atrás el pasado y mirar definiti-vamente hacia el futuro. Jesús inaugura la nueva Pas-cua: el paso del mal al bien, el paso de un pasado de pecado y egoísmo a un futuro de sinceridad y amor de hermanos.

Reflexión

A Jesús no se le encuentra en un sepulcro que está vacío; se le encuentra en los corazones llenos de fe y amor en el Señor. Al resucitar Jesús, los discípulos también resucitan a una nueva vida; quedan transfor-mados en Jesús, y Jesús queda encarnado en ellos. Jesús está vivo, no hace falta verlo con los ojos del cuerpo para creer. La fe de los discípulos en la resu-rrección se desarrolló gradualmente, venciendo las dudas y la incredulidad.
