THE streets of Wollombi are set to ripple with activity this weekend, November 3 and 4, during the Wollombi Valley Country Fair. Negro Street will be buzzing with art, craft, wine and food stalls, music and entertainment. Visitors can browse the stalls for gemstones, hats, fossils, shoes, alpaca, olive and silk products, soaps, plants, flowers, vegetables, paintings, photographs, books, cakes, jewellery and even cloth nappies. They can also treat themselves to a massage, a cuppa and a sweet treat, or a glass of local wine. Bands will be playing in Negro Street on both days: Haydyn Wilson on Saturday, and Millfield local Brian Stitt and the Runaway Cabbages on Sunday. There will also be buskers. Rob Pankhurst, joined by his brumbies, will be reciting bush poetry and entertaining the crowds. Visitors might hear a musket fire or the boom of a cannon, or spot a convict walking around in leg irons, as the NSW Corp of Marines perform historical re-enactments. Sculpture in the Vineyards opens in the Grays Inn garden on Saturday, before the lantern parade snakes its way through the village to a bonfire in the Wollombi Tavern grounds. Learn more about the history of the region during the museum open day on Sunday. Fair organisers are still accepting stall-holders. Sculpture park opens AUSTRALIA’S pre-eminent art critic and writer John McDonald called Wollombi’s Defiance Sculpture Park at The Gate Gallery ‘‘the best sculpture park in Australia’’ when he opened it on September 29. The Sculpture Park is now open to the public from 10am to 3pm, Friday to Monday, and by appoint- ment. Defiance Gallery and The Gate Gallery have joined forces to establish a permanent sculpture park of national significance celebrating the wealth of talent in Australian sculpture. It is the first of its kind in Australia. Fifty outdoor works by prominent and emerging Australian and international sculptors will be placed throughout the eight hectares of gardens surrounding The Gate Gallery.
