Teachings of the Essenes by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely

Welcome,

This book is an adaptation of EdmondBordeaux Szekely’s (pronounced Say-Kay)translation. It is designed for you to delve intothe teachings daily, and participate with yourown thoughts, insights experiences. It is apractical guide for you to be able to pray, withthis as a daily companion, but also forrecording your thoughts. It includes weekly“study guides” for seven weeks. As is revealedin the Teachings, adapt these to your life in away that feels natural.

PROLOGUE TO THE COMMUNIONS

Previous to speaking the actual words of acommunion, the Essene solemnly and reverentlyrepeated the following prologue: "I enter theEternal and Infinite Garden with reverence tothe Heavenly Father, the Earthly Mother andGreat Masters, reverence to the holy, pure andsaving Teaching, reverence to the Brotherhoodof the Elect." He then thought reverently aboutthe angel or force with which he was about tocommune, contemplating its meaning andpurpose in his own life and body, as taught inthe first part of the Communions. Following thisprologue he spoke the actual words of the

Communion.

Peace, were addressed to the Heavenly Father,requesting him to send the Angel of Peace to all,and then to send a certain one of the angels tostrengthen each aspect of the Sevenfold Peace.

Chapter 6

The Sevenfold Peace

The Sevenfold Peace of the Essenes was thesummation of their inner teaching.

Their Tree of Life and the Communions taughtman his relationship with the fourteen forcesof the visible and invisible worlds. TheSevenfold Peace explains his relationship tothe parts of his own being and to his fellowmen, showing how to create peace andharmony in the seven categories of his life.

Harmony to the Essenes meant peace.

They considered that human life can be

divided into seven departments, physical,mental, emotional, social, cultural, its

relationship with nature and its relationshipwith the entire cosmos.

Man, it was held, has three bodies thatfunction in each of these departments, anacting body, a feeling body and a thinkingbody. The thinking body's highest power iswisdom. The feeling body's highest power islove. The acting body's function is to translatethe wisdom of the thinking body and the loveof the feeling body into action in anindividual's social and cultural worlds and inhis utilization of the terrestrial and heavenly

forces.

The Sevenfold Peace explains the utilizationof these powers and forces with the utmostclarity. Every noon a Peace Contemplationwas held with one aspect of Peace; and everySabbath was collectively dedicated to one,the entire cycle covering all phases of man'slife being completed in seven weeks' time.

I - Peace With the Body

The word used by the Essenes to indicate the

physical body, both in Aramaic and inHebrew, signified the body's function, to act,to move.

This differs greatly from other concepts. TheGreeks, for instance, exalted the body for itsesthetic qualities, its proportions andbeauty, and were unaware of any deeperpurpose. The Romans looked upon the bodysimply as an instrument of strength andpower for conquering nations, planting theRoman eagle in far lands. The medievalChristians disdained the body, considering it

the source of all man's troubles, a barrierbetween man and God.

The Essenes had a much deeperunderstanding than any of these. They knewthat in the acting body, evolving throughhundreds of thousands of years, aremanifested all the laws of life and the




cosmos; in it is to be found the key to thewhole universe.

They studied it in relation to man's whole rolein the universe, and their concept of that rolewas greater than any other which has everbeen held. They considered man has threeroles: one of individual evolution; second, afunction in regard to the planet on which helives; and third, a purpose as a unit of thecosmos.

The acting body has its part to play in allthree of these roles. It is a Divine product,created by the law for the purpose of the

Creator, in no way inferior to any otherinstrument of man, nor to anything else inthe universe. It is waiting for man to makeconscious use of its terrestrial and spiritualenergies.

The Essenes knew that man is not anisolated being alone in the universe, but oneamong other beings on earth and on otherplanets, all of whom have acting bodieswhich are evolving even as is man's own. Allof these acting bodies are therefore relatedto each other and affect each other. Every

individual's bodily health and v itality isconsequently of the utmost importance bothto himself and to all other beings on earthand on all other planets.

The daily practices of the Essenes werederived from this dynamic all-sided conceptof the acting body as an integral part of thewhole universe and their extraordinaryhealth and vitality was a result of it.

Those who joined their Brotherhoods weretrained to perfect the acting body in all three

of its roles, and were taught how to adapt itto the constantly changing field of forces inwhich it lives and moves.

They were taught the effects on the organismof different foods and the different naturalforces of earth, the sun, air and water. Theywere required to follow certain rituals utilizingthese forces, such as starting each day with a

cold water ablution and exposing the bodyonce every day to the solar rays. Through

practical experience they learned the vitalizingpower of working in the fields and orchardsand gardens.

They learned how disease is created bydeviations from the law and how to heal thediseases that result from the deviations. Theywere taught the qualities and curative powersof different herbs and plants, of heliotherapyand hydrotherapy, and the proper diet forevery ailment. They were instructed in rightbreathing and in the power which thoughtholds over the acting body.

They learned the material and spiritual valueof moderation in all things, and that fastingwas a way to regenerate the body and todevelop the will and in this way to increasespiritual power.

These practices brought peace and harmonyto the acting body. But undue importance wasnever attached to it. The consideration andcare they gave it was solely to keep it in goodhealth as an instrument through which theycould perform acts of wisdom and love for

their fellowman. In this way the acting bodyparticipated in the evolution of the individual,of the planet and the cosmos, thus enablingthe individual to become a co-creator with thelaw and with God.

This was the first peace practiced by theEssenes, peace with the body.

II - Peace With the Mind

The quintessence of the teaching in theSevenfold Peace was concentrated around

peace with the mind, mind, in the Esseneterminology, being the creator of thought.

The Essenes considered thought to be asuperior force, more powerful than the forceof either feeling or action, because it is theinstigator of both.

The totality of an individual's thoughts was




called his thinking body. The totality of thethoughts in all the hundreds of millions of

thinking bodies around the surface of theearth forms the planetary thinking body; andthe totality of all superior thoughts in theuniverse forms a cosmic thinking body, or acosmic ocean of thought.

The Essenes considered an individual'sthinking body, like his acting body, has threefunctions, an individual, a planetary and acosmic function.

It's individual function is to utilize the powerof thought to guide and direct the currents

of feeling in the individual's feeling body,and the actions of his acting body. Thethinking body can do this because itpenetrates through and through the feelingand acting bodies.

The planetary function is to contribute nobleand uplifting thoughts to the planetarythinking body. An individual's thoughts form aforce field around him comparable to themagnetic field surrounding a magnetic pole.Into this force field the individual's thoughtsare constantly pouring and being sent out, and

it is also receiving currents of thought fromthe planetary thinking body of which it is apart. Every individual thus lives, moves, thinks,feels and acts in this surrounding planetaryatmosphere of thought, to which he himself isconstantly contributing. He is responsible forthe thoughts he contributes, for all thethoughts he sends out.

The third function of the thinking body, itscosmic function, is not readily fulfilled. Thecosmic ocean of thought, of which theplanetary thought atmosphere surrounding the

earth is only an infinitesimal part, consists of all the thoughts in the universe superiorenough to have become freed of the planetaryforces attaching them to their particularplanet. Only those highest thought currentswhich have overcome the planetary gravitationof their planetary atmosphere become unitedwith the infinite cosmic ocean of thought.

This cosmic ocean of thought represents the

perfection of the law, the omnipotence of thelaw and the omnipresence of the law. It hasalways existed and it always will exist. It ismore ancient than any of the existing planetsin the solar system, more ancient than theexisting solar system itself, or than the galacticor ultragalactic systems. Eternal and infinite itdirects all the steps of the cosmic andplanetary evolution in the infinite cosmic oceanof life.

The cosmic function of each individual'sthinking body is to create thoughts of so

superior a quality that they can unite with thiscosmic ocean of thought.

The Essenes considered that the thinkingbody is man's highest gift from his Creator.For it, and it alone, gives him the capacity tobecome conscious of the Law, to understandit, to work in harmony with it, to perceive itsmanifestations in all his surroundings, inhimself, in every cell and molecule of hisphysical body, in everything that is, and torealize its omnipresence and omnipotence.By becoming conscious of the Law, by

understanding it, by acting in harmony withit, man becomes a co-creator with God; thereis no greater or higher Value in the universe.

Through this most powerful force of thought, this greatest of treasures possessedby man, and his title to nobility, man has theability and freedom to accomplish whateverhe truly wants, to achieve anything to whichhe aspires that is in harmony with the Law,and thereby to live in the eternal perfectionthat is the Law.

If man thinks in harmony with the Law hecan remedy whatever in harmony he hascreated in the past; he can recreate histhinking body, his feeling body and hisacting body. He can heal all diseases in hisphysical body and create complete harmonyin his environment and world.




But if the currents of thought in the thinkingbody are not in accord with the Law, nothing

else can create harmony in the individual'sworld.

The Essenes knew that only a small minorityof mankind make use of the great capacity of the thinking body. They knew that themajority use their thinking bodies quitehaphazardly, unaware their thoughts can beused to build or to destroy. An almostautomatic succession of thoughts, ideas andassociation of ideas passes through theirminds without conscious direction. Yet eventhese drifting elements of thought can create

powerful forces that go through and throughthe feeling body and the acting body,interpenetrating every atom and cell,throwing every particle of them intovibration. From these vibrations radiationsgo out that are harmonious or inharmoniousaccording to the nature of the thought.

If man fails to become consciously aware of the Law, he deviates from it unknowingly forhe is surrounded by fields of inharmoniousforces prompting him to deviations. Thesedeviations create all the imperfections in his

world, all the limitations and negations in histhoughts and feelings and physical well-being,in his environment, in society and the entireplanet. Every time man creates or accepts aninferior thought, he is accepting an inferiorforce into his world.

The inferior force, according to the strengthof the thought, reacts on his feeling body.This sets up an emotional disequilibrium inhis feeling body, which in turn reacts on hisphysical body.

This disequilibrium automatically causesfurther deviations, further inharmonies,further diseases in the feeling and actingbodies. And these inharmonies, thesediseases, create an inharmoniousatmosphere around the individual whichaffects the thinking, feeling and actingbodies of all others who are not conscious of the Law and do not know how to protect

themselves from receiving all those inferiorthoughts created by the individual's single

deviation in thought.So every individual who has an inferiorthought, a limiting, negative or inharmoniousthought, starts a chain reaction of deviationswhich spreads throughout the planet and theplanetary worlds, causing even furtherdeviations, negations, limitations andinharmonies.

This inharmony is contagious ' just as manydiseases are contagious. But the great Essenemasters taught man how to prevent these

waves of inharmony, right at their source,before the first inharmonious thought iscreated. They taught man the right way of thinking, the way of never deviating from theLaw, never receiving or accepting into theconsciousness any thought less thanperfection.

These great masters also taught that man isfree to work with the Law if he so desires,creating ever increasing harmony andperfection in his world and in the worldoutside of himself.

Man continually tries to evolve ways to betterthe conditions in which he lives. But he doesthis too often without regard for the Law. Heseeks peace and harmony by material means,technical evolution, economic systems, notknowing that the conditions of inharmonywhich he himself has brought into being cannever be remedied by material means. Theocean of suffering and inharmony humanityhas created can only be destroyed whenmankind sets into motion the law of harmonyin his thinking body. Only through complete

cooperation with the Law can peace andharmony be brought to the planet.

This is the teaching of the ancient Essenes inregard to peace with the mind.

III - Peace With the Family

The third peace of the Essenes, peace with the




family, concerns harmony in the feeling body,harmony in the emotions.

By the term family the Essenes meant those inthe individual's immediate environment, thepeople he contacts in his daily life andthought, his family, relatives, friends andassociates. According to the Essene traditionharmony with these people depends upon thefeeling body.

The natural function of the feeling body is toexpress love. Mankind has been told this overand over again by the great Masters, Jesus,Buddha, Zoroaster, Moses and the Prophets.

He has been given the law that he should lovehis Creator with all his thinking, feeling andacting bodies. Life in all its spheres, aspectsand manifestations is the demonstration of creative love.

Divine love is a great cosmic power, a cosmicfunction. It is the law of all man's bodies, butit is expressed most powerfully through thefeeling body.

The feeling body consists of all the currentsof feeling and emotions an individual

experiences and sends out into theatmosphere about him.

Just as the thinking bodies of all theindividuals on the planet create a thoughtatmosphere around it, so all the feelingbodies create a planetary feelingatmosphere, invisible and imponderable, buthaving enormous influence and power. Everyfeeling and emotion created by an individualbecomes a part of the feeling atmosphere of earth, setting up a resonance of co-vibrationwith all similar feelings in the earth's

atmosphere.

If an inferior feeling is sent out, its creator isimmediately tuned in to all the similar inferiorfeelings in the earth's feeling body. He thusopens the gate to a flood of destructive powerwhich rushes in and seizes control of hisfeelings, and often of his mind, amplifying his

own low feelings just as a loud speakeramplifies or intensifies sound.

This destructive force directly affects theindividual's physical body. It affects thefunctioning of the endocrine glands and thewhole glandular system. It produces diseasecells that lower vitality, shorten life and resultin unlimited suffering. It is thus not surprisingthat statistics of nervous disorders and otherdiseases are so appalling in spite of all thehospitals, sanitariums, medical organizations,laboratories and the progress of hygiene andmedicine.

Through his feeling body man has becomean autointoxicating automaton, because of his deviation from the law, his acting withoutknowledge of the law, against it instead of with it.

The Essenes knew that there is a great deal of inharmony in the feeling body of almosteveryone. By studying the feeling bodies of babies and primitive man they learned why.

The feeling body of a baby first registers themanifestations of the infant's primitive

instinct of self-preservation. This instinctarouses three fundamental emotions: fear,anger and love. Fear arises from a suddenmovement or noise; anger from Interferencewith the baby's freedom; love from thesatisfaction of its hunger and needs. Fearand anger are inferior feelings; the lovefeeling, while superior, in the baby isrudimentary. The baby's feeling body is avolcano of emotions, most of which areinferior. Its thinking body has not begun tofunction.

A primitive man has a similar feeling body.His emotions, likewise centered around theinstinct of self preservation, are a powerfulforce completely dominating his embryonicthinking body.

In both child and primitive man the feelingbody develops long before the thinking body.




This is necessary to protect the physical bodyfrom danger and so preserve its life. The

instinct of self-preservation is a law of nature.Acting under it is in entire harmony with thelaw until man has evolved the power to thinkand reason his way out of danger.

But because feeling has functioned for somuch longer a period of time than thinking,it tends to dominate thought even after thechild is grown and the primitive man hasbecome civilized. In the mass of mankindtoday the feeling body rules the thinkingbody.

This is the cause of man's first deviation fromthe law.

Through the power of thought man canhandle every situation in his life moreadequately than through unthinkingemotion. But the actions of most people arefar more often the expression of impulses inthe feeling body than of reasoned thought.This results in a tremendous imbalance in hisbodies. Because adult civilized man hasevolved to the point where he has the abilityto think, thought should govern his actions.

When he permits them to be controlled byemotion and feeling, as they were dominatedin infancy, he throws all his powers out of rhythm, out of harmony.

This creates a regressive psychologicalcondition in his whole existence. His deedsand actions as a consequence remain self-centered and egoistic like those of a child orprimitive man. But when he is no longer asavage or a child, he deviates from the law if he acts as a child or primitive man. Hisinstinctive impulses can only serve

evolutionary progress when controlled by thethinking faculties.

There are further consequences from thisdeviation from the law.

Nature has given man the capacity to think sohe may be able to understand its laws anddirect his life in harmony with them. Man can

reach a far higher degree of evolution throughthinking than through living by instinct. So

when he continues to let his feeling body bethe dominating power in his actions, he notonly retards his own evolution but that of theplanet.

If he makes no effort to understand the law butneglects it and consequently lacks knowledgeof it, he has to create his own laws, smallartificial laws, of self-centeredness and egoism;and these cause walls of separation betweenhimself and the rest of the human family,between himself and nature and betweenhimself and the Great Law, the Creator.

Man's first deviation from the law through thefeeling body starts the long chain of deviationswhich cause all human inharmony andsuffering on earth.

All the great teachers of humanity throughthousands of years have warned man of theconsequences of deviation from the law of the feeling body. Buddha pointed out how itresults in suffering, suffering for theindividual and suffering for humanity.

The Essenes showed that the feeling bodycan be the most powerful instrument for theproduction of health, vitality and happiness,and that through its right functioning inexpressing love, man can create thekingdom of heaven in and around himself and the whole human family.

The Essene peace with the family is the GreatLaw in its expression of men's love towardone another, a law revealed to little childrenbut often hidden from the minds of men.

IV - Peace With Humanity

The fourth peace of the Essenes referred toharmony between groups of people, to socialand economic peace.

Mankind has never enjoyed social peace inany age in history. Man has always exploitedman economically, oppressed him politically,




suppressed him by military force. TheEssenes knew these injustices were caused

by deviations from the law. The very samedeviations that produce inharmony in man'spersonal life, in his acting, thinking andfeeling bodies, produce wealth and poverty,masters and slaves, social unrest.

The Essenes regarded both riches and povertyto be the result of deviations from the law.

Great wealth, they considered, is concentratedinto the hands of the few because of man'sexploitation of man, in one way or another.This has caused misery for both suppressor

and suppressed. The many feel hatred and itskindred destructive emotions. This producesfear in the hearts of the exploiters, fear of revolt, fear of losing their possessions, eventheir lives.

Poverty was held to be an equal deviationfrom the law. A man is poor because of wrong attitudes of thinking, feeling andacting. He is ignorant of the law and fails towork with the law. The Essenes showed thatthere is an abundance for everyone of allthat a man needs for his use and happiness.

Limitations and over-abundance are bothartificial states, deviations from the law.They produce the vicious circle of fear andrevolt, a permanent atmosphere of inharmony, affecting the thinking, feelingand acting bodies of both rich and poor,continually creating a state of unrest, warand chaos. This has been the conditionthroughout recorded history.

The rich and the poor alike suffer theconsequences of their deviations.

The Essenes knew there was no escape fromthis circle of oppression, hatreds andviolence, wars and revolutions, exceptthrough changing the ignorance of theindividuals in the world. They knew it takes along time for an individual to change hisideas, thinking and habits and learn to

cooperate with the law. The individualhimself has to do the changing; nobody else

can do it for him.But a higher and higher understanding of thelaw can be brought about gradually, theEssenes believed, through teaching andexample. They taught a quite opposite way of existence from either poverty or great wealth.They demonstrated in their daily lives that if man lives according to the law, seeks tounderstand the law and consciously cooperateswith it, he will know no lack. He will be able tomaintain an all-sided harmony in every act andthought and feeling, and he will find his every

need fulfilled.

The solution which the Essenes offered foreconomic and social harmony can be appliedin every age, the present as well as the past. Itcontained four factors:

1. Separating from the chaotic conditions of the mass of mankind which refuses to obeynatural and cosmic law.2. Demonstrating a practical social systembased on natural and cosmic law.3. Communicating these ideas to the outside

world through teaching, healing and helpingothers according to their needs.4. Attracting to their communities otherindividuals who are sufficiently evolved to bewilling to cooperate with the law.

The Essenes withdrew from the inharmony of cities and towns and formed brotherhoodson the shores of lakes and rivers where theycould live and work in obedience to the law.They established their economic and socialsystems based wholly on the law. No richand no poor were in their brotherhoods. No

one had need of anything he did not have;and no one had an excess of things he couldnot use. They considered one condition asdeteriorating as the other.

They demonstrated to humanity that man'sdaily bread, his food and all his materialneeds can be acquired without struggle




through the knowledge of the law.

Strict rules and regulations were unnecessaryfor all lived in accord with the law. Order,efficiency and individual freedom existed sideby side. The Essenes were extremely practicalas well as highly spiritual and intellectual.

They took no part in politics and adhered tono political factions, knowing that neitherpolitical or military means could changeman's chaotic condition. They showed byconcrete example that exploitation andoppression of others were completelyunnecessary. Many economic and social

historians have considered the Essenes theworld's first social reformers on acomprehensive scale.

Their brotherhoods were partly cooperative.Each member of the group had his own smallhouse and a garden large enough for him togrow whatever he especially desired. But healso took part in communal activities whereverhis service might be needed, such as in thepasturing of animals, planting and harvestingof crops most economically grown on anextensive basis.

They had great agricultural proficiency, athorough knowledge of plant life, soil andclimatic conditions. In comparatively desertareas they produced a large variety of fruitsand vegetables of the highest quality and insuch abundance they periodically had asurplus to distribute to the needy. Theirscientific knowledge was such that theycould do all of this in a comparatively fewhours each day, leaving ample time for theirstudies and spiritual practices.

Nature was their Bible. They consideredgardening educational, a key to theunderstanding of the entire universe,revealing all its laws, even as does the actingbody. They read and studied the great bookof nature throughout their lives, in all theirbrotherhoods, as an inexhaustible source of knowledge, as well as of energy andharmony. When they dug in their gardens

and tended their plantings they heldcommunion with the growing things, the

trees, sun, soil, rain. From all of these forcesthey received their education, their pleasureand their recreation.

One of the reasons for their great success wasthis attitude toward their work. They did notconsider it as work but as a means of studyingthe forces and laws of nature. It was in thisthat their economic system differed from allothers. The vegetables and fruits theyproduced were only the incidental results of their activities; their real reward was in theknowledge, harmony and vitality they gained

to enrich their lives. Gardening was a ritualwith them; a great and impressive silencereigned as they worked in harmony with naturecreating veritable kingdoms of heaven in theirbrotherhoods.

Their economic and social organization wasonly one phase of their whole system of lifeand teaching. It was considered a means toan end, not an end in itself. There was thus adynamic unity and harmony in all theiractivity, their thoughts and feelings anddeeds. All gave freely of their time and

energy with no mathematical measuring of one another's contributions. Through thisharmony within each individual, theindividual's evolution progressed steadily.

The Essenes knew it takes many generationsto effect changes in people or in mankind asa whole, but they sent out teachers andhealers from their brotherhoods whose livesand accomplishments would manifest thetruths they taught and little by little increasemankind's understanding and desire to livein accord with the law. The Essene

Brotherhood at the Dead Sea for manycenturies sent out such teachers as John theBaptist, Jesus and John the Beloved. Theywarned again and again of the consequencesof man's social and economic deviationsfrom the law. Prophet after prophet was sentforth to warn of the dangers incurred by thesocial injustices that existed then even asthey exist today. Not only were individuals




and groups warned but it was shown that allwho aided or in any way collaborated with

the deviators were also in danger.The mass of mankind failed to listen, ailedto gain any understanding of social andeconomic peace. Only the few more evolvedindividuals heeded. Of these some wereselected to work in the brotherhoods asexamples of peace and harmony in allaspects of existence.

The Essenes knew that through thecumulative effect of example and teachingthe minority who understand and obey the

law will someday grow through thegenerations to become, finally, the majorityof mankind.

Then and then only will mankind know thisfourth peace of the Essenes, peace withhumanity.

V - Peace With Culture

Peace with culture refers to the utilization of the masterpieces of wisdom from all ages,including the present.

The Essenes held that man can take hisrightful place in the universe only byabsorbing all possible knowledge 'from thegreat teachings which have been given forthby masters of wisdom.

According to the Essene traditions thesemasterpieces represented one-third of allknowledge. They considered there are threepathways to the finding of truth. One is thepath of intuition which was followed by themystics and prophets. Another is the pathway

of nature, that of the scientist. The third is thepathway of culture, that of great masterpiecesof literature and the arts.

The Essenes preserved many preciousmanuscripts in their brotherhoods which theyconstantly studied by a method found in noother school of thought in antiquity. They

studied them by following the first twopathways to truth: intuition and nature.

Through intuition they endeavored toapprehend the original higher intuition of themaster and so awaken their own higherconsciousness. Through nature, from whichthe great masters drew comparisons toexpress their intuitive knowledge to themasses, the Essenes correlated their ownintuitive observations with the teachings of themasters. By this continual comparison betweennature, their own intuitions and the greatmasterpieces of culture, their own individualevolution was advanced.

It was also considered to be every man'sduty to acquire the wisdom from thesemasterpieces so that the experience,knowledge and wisdom already attained byprevious generations could be utilized.Without these teachings the progress andevolution of mankind would be much slowerthan it is, for every generation would have tostart all over again from the beginning. Inuniversal culture man has added somethingnew to the planet and so has become acreator, a co-creator with God. Thus he

performs his function on the planet bycontinuing the work of creation.

Universal culture is of great value tohumanity from two other standpoints. First,it represents the highest ideals whichmankind has held. Second, it represents anall-sided synthesis of knowledge of theproblems of life and their right solution.

This knowledge was brought forth by highlyevolved individuals, masters who had thepower to contact the universal sources of

knowledge, energy and harmony which existin the cosmic ocean of thought. Evidence of this contact was their conscious directing of the forces of nature in ways the world todayterms miracles. These manifestations of theirpowers drew about them a limited number of followers who were advanced enough in theirown evolution to understand the deeper




meaning of the master's teaching. Thesedisciples endeavored to preserve the truths

taught by writing down the master's words.This was the origin of all the greatmasterpieces of universal literature.

The truths in these masterpieces are eternal.They are valid for all time. They come fromthe one eternal unchanging source of allknowledge. The cosmic and natural laws,nature, man's inner consciousness are thesame today as two or ten thousand yearsago. Such teachings belong to no one schoolof thought or religion. The Essenes believedman should study all the great sacred books

of humanity, all the great contributions toculture, for they knew all teach the sameageless wisdom and any seemingcontradictions come through theonesidedness of the followers who haveattempted to interpret them.

The object of study, they held, is not to adda few additional facts to the store of knowledge an individual already may have. Itis to open to him sources of universal truth.They considered that when a man reads agreat sacred book of humanity, the symbols

of letters and words themselves create in thethinking body powerful vibrations andcurrents of thought. These vibrations andcurrents put the individual in touch with thethinking body of the great master who gaveforth the truth.

This opens up for the individual a source of knowledge, harmony and power obtainable inno other way. This is the great value, the innermeaning, of the fifth peace of the Essenes.These great masterpieces have been broughtforth in periods of history when humanity was

in great chaos. Mankind's constant deviationsfrom the law seem to culminate at certaintimes in mass confusion and disruption,threatening or completely bringing about thedisintegration of the existing social order andway of life. At such periods the great mastershave appeared as way showers to the people.Masters such as Zoroaster, Buddha, Moses,

Jesus, brought new horizons and new hope to

humanity.

They gave forth their teachings in two forms.One was in parables from nature which couldbe understood by the masses of the people.The other, given to the small minority of evolved followers, was transmitted direct fromthe master's consciousness to theconsciousness of the disciple. The former arecalled the exoteric books and were referred toby historians as the written traditions. Theother teaching was termed the unwrittentradition, and these were the esoteric teachingwritten down by the disciples for themselves,not for the people. But even the disciples did

not always understand the master's wisdomand interpret it correctly.

A few, although only a very few, contemporarybooks contain the same teachings which themasters gave forth. Thousands of people writebooks today and thousands upon thousands of books are published each year. With such amass production of printed matter it isinevitable that the vast majority of it must beof an inferior quality even the best of whichproclaims shallow pseudo-truths. Yet whatlittle time modern man allots to reading tends

to be spent on this ephemeral and generallyworthless printed matter, while themasterpieces of the ages gather dust on thelibrary shelves.

Before printing was invented only thosemanuscripts which had real value were everpreserved. Only extraordinary books wereproduced. The average man was not able toread or write. The difficulties of acquiringknowledge were enormous. Traveling to thefew centers of learning entailed great dangerdue to unsettled conditions in various

countries and the primitive methods of transportation. The student moreover had toserve years of apprenticeship to beconsidered worthy of acquiring wisdom, andfurther long years in acquiring it. Thematerial difficulties in producing amanuscript were also great. Because of theseobstacles only works of true genius weretransmitted to future generations and the




few that have survived represent wisdom of the highest order.

This third part of all wisdom, represented bythe culture of humanity, was held by theEssenes to be necessary for man's evolution.In no other way could he gain an all-sidedunderstanding of the laws of life throughcontact with the cosmic ocean of thought.

This contact, through the eternal thinkingbody of a great master, is the sacredpurpose and the priceless privilege of peaceand harmony with culture.

VI - Peace With the Kingdom of the Earthly Mother

The sixth peace teaches harmony with thelaws of terrestrial nature, the kingdom of theEarthly Mother. The unity of man and natureis a basic principle of the Essene science of life.

Man is an integral part of nature. He isgoverned by all the laws and forces of nature. His health, vitality and well-beingdepend upon his degree of harmony with

earth forces; and that of every individual,every nation and the whole of humanity willalways be in direct proportion to man'sobservance of terrestrial laws.

Universal history shows that every nationreached its greatest splendor by following thegreat law of unity between man and nature. Itsvitality and prosperity flourished when thepeople lived a simple natural life of cooperation with nature. But when the nationor civilization deviates from unity, it inevitablydisintegrates and disappears.

This unity of man and nature has never beenso heavily transgressed as in the presentday. Modern man's building of cities is inentire variance with nature. The city's stoneand concrete walls are the symbols of man'sseparation from nature, of his aggressiveway of life with its urges to subjugation of

others and to constant competition, one withanother. His present centralized, technical

and mechanized life creates a chasmseparating him from nature, a chasm whichnever was wider or deeper.

Unity with nature is the foundation of man'sexistence on the planet. It is the foundation of all economic systems, of all socialrelationships between groups of people.Without it, the present civilization like those of the past will move toward decline and decay.

This law of unity was held by the Essenes to bethe guiding norm for the daily life of man in

the material universe.

Humanity has had knowledge of this great lawfrom a time preceding the Pleistocenecataclysm. According to traditions based onthe hieroglyphics of the Sumerians made someten thousand years ago the life of antediluvianman was preponderantly a forest life,inseparable from that of the forest. Science hasnamed this man homo sapiens sylvanus.

The giant trees of that age, several hundredfeet in height, not only provided shelter but

regulated the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere. Trees produced man's foodwith an abundance of different fruits. Man'sbasic occupation was with trees. He not onlycultivated and cared for them, he creatednew varieties producing new kinds of fruits.He was a great arboriculturalist, living inharmony with all the forces of nature. Hecollaborated with her in every way, bothextending the forests and abstaining fromharming trees.

This antediluvian man of the forest ages,

without technical development of any kind,was an almost perfect demonstration of thegreat law of unity and harmony between manand nature. In the philosophy of all ancientteachings man's unity with the forests was abasic characteristic. The idea of unitybetween man and nature has inspired greatthinkers, philosophers and whole systems of




thought.

Zoroaster based much of his teaching in theZend Avesta upon it. He sought to renew theearlier traditions by leading man back intothis harmonious way of life, collaborationwith terrestrial nature. He taught hisfollowers that it was their duty to maintainthe topsoil, to study gardening and all thelaws of nature and to collaborate with itsforces to improve the whole vegetablekingdom and extend it over the surface of the whole earth. He urged his followers totake an active part in developing everyaspect of terrestrial nature, plants, trees and

all their products.

To encourage this he directed all fathers toplant a fruit tree on every birthday of each of his sons, and on the twenty-first birthday togive the youth the twenty one fruit treestogether with the land on which they grew.This was to be the son's heritage and thefather was also commanded to teach the boyall the laws of practical gardening andcollaboration with nature so that he couldprovide for all his own future needs.

The ideal existence for man, Zoroastertaught, is that of the gardener whose workwith the soil, air, sunshine and rain keepshim constantly contacting the forces of nature and studying their laws. Study of thisgreatest book, the book of nature, Zoroasterconsidered the first step in creating peaceand harmony in the kingdom of the EarthlyMother.

The teaching of this same great unity betweenman and nature appeared in Indiaimmediately after the Zend Avesta, in the

Vedic philosophy of Brahmanism, in theUpanishads, and later in the teaching of Buddha. The Brahmanic Law of the One,"Thou Art That," (Tat Tvam Asi) expressed theunity of everything, the universe, man, nature.The sages of India were men of the forest,living in complete harmony with all creation.

Berosus, the Chaldean priest, pictured this

natural forest way of living.

But the unity between man and nature hasbeen given its most complete and poeticexpression in the second chapter of the EsseneGospel of John in which Jesus borrowed hiswhole terminology from nature to show thatman is an integral part of it. Jesus gave a lastwarning regarding this unity and the necessityof returning to it.

Antediluvian man, the Zoroastrian, theBrahman, the Buddhist, the Essene, all considerthe forest and nature to be man's friend andprotector, the mother providing all his earthly

needs. They never looked upon her as an alienforce which had to be fought and conquered asdoes modern man. The two symbols, the forestand the stone wall, epitomize the vastdifference between ancient and modernconcepts of nature, between harmoniouspeacefulness and cooperation and the stonewalls of cities, the destruction of plant life,soil, and climate.

Man needs today to learn harmony andpeace with nature more than in any otherage in history. There are enormous regions

over the earth where he is letting the topsoildeteriorate and disappear. Never before hasthere been such wholesale destruction of forests, not only in one or two countries butall over the five continents. As aconsequence of this lack of cooperation withnature the desert areas of the world areincreasing, drought is more and morefrequent, floods periodically inundate theland. There is an unmistakable deteriorationof climate; excessive cold, excessive heatand increasing hordes of insect pestsdamage crops throughout the world. Instead

of following the noble tradition of theEssenes contemporary man fails torecognize the great law of unity andcooperation with nature, and seems bent ondeteriorating his heritage, refusing to readthe great open book of nature which revealsall the laws of life and shows the way to everincreasing happiness for man.




The Essene teaching shows the only way of organizing man's life on this planet, the only

foundation for a healthy humanity, peace withthe kingdom of the Earthly Mother.

VII - Peace With the Kingdom of the Heavenly Father

This, the seventh peace, includes all otheraspects of peace. The kingdom of theHeavenly Father is the universe, the entirecosmos. It is ruled by the One Law, thetotality of all laws. The Heavenly Father isthe Law.

Law is everywhere present. It is behind allthat is manifest and all that is unmanifest. Astone falls, a mountain forms, seas flowaccording to law. In accord with law solarsystems arise, evolve and disappear. Ideas,sensations, intuitions come and go in man'sconsciousness according to law. All that is,concrete or abstract, material or immaterial,visible or invisible, is ruled by law, the OneLaw.

The Law is formless as a mathematicalequation is formless. Yet it contains all

knowledge, all love, all power. It eternallymanifests all truth and all reality. It is man'steacher and friend, showing him all he mustdo, and know, and be to evolve to the beingwhich he will someday become. The Lawguides man in every problem, through everyobstacle, telling him always the perfectsolution.

Peace with the Law means peace andharmony with the cosmic ocean of all thecosmic forces in the universe. Through thispeace, man makes contact with all the

superior currents and radiations from all theplanets in cosmic space. Through it he isable to attain realization of his unity with allthe forces in the universe, those of earth andthose from all other planets in the solarsystem and all galactic systems.

Through this peace he can become united

with all the highest values in the universe.Through this peace is awakened the inner

intuition which was followed by the mysticsand prophets of all ages. Through this peaceman contacts his Creator.

This peace completes man's evolution. Itbrings him total happiness. It is his final goal.

Man is a part of the totality of the universe. Heforms an undivided unity with the whole. Hethinks himself apart from it because he hasbecome aware of himself as an individual. Hehas become self-conscious and self-centeredbeyond the point where self-centeredness is

necessary to preserve his life.

This feeling of separation gives rise to hisconsciousness of lack, of limitation. In thoughthe has separated himself from the abundanceof the universe, shut himself away from theSource of all supply. Supply is material andimmaterial, the tangible visible needs for dailylife and universal supply of energy, vitality andpower, the greatest of which is love.

The Essene considered that man lives in themidst of a field of forces, both terrestrial and

planetary, and that his individual evolutionprogresses to the degree in which hecooperates with these forces. But there areother forces of a superior order with which it iseven more important that he is in harmony.These are the spiritual currents in the cosmicocean of cosmic consciousness. These highercurrents do not mingle with the terrestrial andplanetary currents. Man by his own efforts, hisown will, has to ascend to this cosmic ocean of universal life. Then and then only can herealize his oneness with the Law.

To understand this clearly it is necessary tolook at the universe as a whole and tocomprehend that it is a totality whichincludes all its parts, all love, all life, allknowledge, all power, all substance. It is thesum of all substances for out of it all thingsare formed. It is the sum of all love which iseverywhere present, for love is the supreme




source and the cohesive force which bindsthe universe together, in all its parts. Man

can no more be apart from this totality thana cell in his body can be apart from his body.

The Essenes spoke of the three parts of man:the material body, the feeling body and thethinking body. But they were always awarethat these three parts were not a division inreality for they are all parts of the one. Andthis spiritual one higher body, the spiritualbody is one with and part of all else in theuniverse.

A Man's failure to understand this causes an

infinite complexity of false limitations. He notonly limits himself in regard to the supply of his material needs, but in regard to hiscapacities, his abilities, and powers of thinking, feeling and acting. He lives a life of mediocrity because of these false ideas of limitations which he fastens upon himself.Modern science concurs in this, reporting thatman has capacities he seldom or never uses.The Essene teaching shows that this conditionis caused by his sense of separateness, hisself-imposed limitations in which he hasbecome enmeshed by his deviations from the

law.

Peace with the kingdom of the HeavenlyFather is therefore only possible as maneliminates these deviations and learns tocooperate with the Law, establishing peaceand harmony with each of the aspects of theSevenfold Peace, the acting, thinking andfeeling bodies, the family, humanity, cultureand nature. Only then can he know theseventh peace, total peace.

The Essenes taught this peace to humanity

so that they could overcome all limitationsand contact their universal Source, the sameSource with which the great mastersthroughout the ages have united theirconsciousness when they gave forth theirintuitive teachings showing man how tobecome conscious of the law, understand it,work with it, and manifest it in action.

All history is a record of the self-imposedlimitations of man and his efforts to overcome

them. These efforts have been madeindividually, by groups or nations, and in aplanetary sense. But they have almost alwaysbeen made negatively, inharmoniously,through struggle and further deviations fromthe law. Thus they have bound man in furtherlimitations, further inharmony and furtherseparation in thought from his Source.

The kingdom of the Heavenly Father is alwaysopen to him. His return to the universalconsciousness, universal supply, is alwayspossible. Once he makes the decision to return

and puts forth the persistent effort, he canalways go back to the Source, his HeavenlyFather, from whom he came and from whomhe has never in reality been away.

The great peace of the Essenes teaches manhow to go back, how to take the final step thatunites him with the cosmic ocean of superiorradiations of the whole universe and reachcomplete union with the Heavenly Father, thetotality of all law, the One Law.

This was the ultimate aim of all Essenes and

governed their every thought, feeling andaction. It is the final aim which all mankind willone day achieve.




Chapter 7

The Essene Psychology

The Essenes expressed an exceptionalknowledge of psychology in their practice of the Communions with the natural and cosmicforces. They knew that man has both a

conscious and subconscious mind and werewell aware of the powers of each.

In making one group of their Communionsthe first activity of the morning, theyconsciously set in motion forces that becamethe keynote of their whole day. They knewthat a thought held strongly enough in the

consciousness at the beginning of the dayinfluences the individual throughout his

waking hours. The morning Communionsconsequently opened the mind toharmonious currents which enabled them toabsorb specific forms of energy into thephysical body.

The evening Communions, performed as thelast act in the evening before sleep, appliedthe same principle. The Essenes knew thatthese last thoughts influenced thesubconscious mind throughout the night,and that the evening Communions thereforeput the subconscious into contact with the

storehouse of superior cosmic forces. Theyknew that sleep can thus become a source of deepest knowledge.

The average man experiences this at times,finding a problem solved during sleep andquite often in a way apart from his ordinarytrend of thinking. Many scientists, writers andother creative workers have also found thattheir inventions and ideas have come to themduring the night or in the early morning hours.

The knowledge received during sleep is a

working of natural law. Although for themajority sleep is little more than a period of detoxication, a means of physiologicalreparation, for the small minority it representsthe psychological perfecting of the individual.The Essenes knew that the higher forces setinto action before going to sleep, when theearthly forces of the myriad activities of theday are stilled, would result in the progressiveattainment of the lofty objectives of theirevening Communions.

They also knew that any negative or

inharmonious thought held in theirconsciousness when they retired would lowertheir resistance to the negative forces in theoutside world.

They had a profound knowledge of the body aswell as of the mind. They knew the two couldnot be separated as they form a dynamic




organic unit, and what affects one affects theother. Essenes antidated psychosomatic

medicine by several thousand years.They knew bodily health had a great deal todo with the receiving of the higher forces,and that a detoxicated organism is morecapable of establishing contact with themthan is one in which the forces are partiallyparalyzed by the burden of eliminatingbodily poisons during the hours of sleep.The superior revelations which have beenbrought down to us from antiquity by thegreat thinkers and teachers were given bythose who invariably led very simple and

harmonious lives. Their bodies consequentlywere extremely healthy. It was not merelychance that great revelations of truth werereceived by the great Masters; theirorganisms had developed capacities lackedby individuals whose lives have been devotedto more worldly pursuits. The Esseneteachings and way of life brought about thedevelopment of these capacities.

They paid great attention to the food theyate, that it might harmonize with natural law,but they were equally careful of their diet in

thought and emotions. They were fullycognizant that man's subconscious mind islike a sensitized plate registering everythingthe individual sees or hears, and that it istherefore necessary to prevent all inferiorthoughts, such as fear, anxiety, insecurity,hatred, ignorance, egotism and intolerancefrom entering the gate of the subconsciousmind.

The natural law that two things cannotoccupy the same space at the same time wasclear to them and they knew a person cannot

think of two things simultaneously.Therefore if the mind is filled with positive,harmonious thoughts those that are negativeand inharmonious cannot lodge in it.Positive, harmonious thoughts must beintroduced into the subconscious to replaceall inferior ones, just as the cells of the bodymust constantly be replaced by food, air andwater as the old cells are broken down. This

was a part of the task accomplished by theEssene Communions, introducing morning,

noon and night superior currents of thoughtand feeling into the thinking and feelingbodies.

The subconscious can be regenerated by adiet of good and harmonious thoughts andfeelings administered all during the day, butespecially at those moments of borderlandconsciousness when its receptivity is at itsbest. When it is thus regenerated it willbecome a source of energy and harmony tomind and body. It will be a friend sendingconstructive harmonious messages to every

part of the body, causing them to functionefficiently.

Certain facts known to the Essenes aboutintroducing a thought or thoughts into thesubconscious have been rediscovered bymodern psychologists. It is known that whena person is fully conscious, his subconsciousmind does not easily accept a purposefulsuggestion. And when he is in asubconscious state he cannot of courseinfluence his subconscious consciously. Butthere are moments when the consciousness

is only half submerged in the subconscious,moments such as occur just before going tosleep, just after awaking from sleep, andsometimes when in a state of reverie such asis occasioned by beautiful music or poetry.At such moments the subconscious mind ismost receptive to what is given to it.

Many teachings of great religions andpractices of ancient and modernphilosophical systems, both those of the Eastand of the West, as well as those of theEssenes, utilize this all-important

psychological fact.

The subconscious is dynamic, ever changing,even as are the cells of the body, and it isconstantly being fed by the experiences andimpressions it receives from the consciousmind. These experiences include all thethoughts and feelings held forcefully enoughto create an impression upon it. The




traumatic experiences of childhood are thosewhich have been felt with great intensity and

fed into the subconscious mind, but neverreplaced by new and more constructiveimpressions and experiences.

The subconscious has been defined as thetotality of an individual's experiences frombirth to the current moment. Every dynamicnew experience changes it; and it can beconsciously changed according to the degreeof the intensity of the impression put into it.The more intense the impression, the morelasting will it be in the subconscious.

Certain other factors were known by theEssenes to govern the acceptance by thesubconscious mind of a thought or a feeling.One was that if the conscious mind does notaccept the thought as a reality and apossibility, the subconscious will also reject it.

Another was the necessity of projecting thethought to the subconscious without effort,spontaneously. If an effort is made, the fullyconscious state is evoked and thesubconscious cannot be reached. To actspontaneously and without effort requires

complete relaxation of mind and body. Thiswas part of Essene practice.

They accomplished the first step inrelaxation by releasing the tensions orcontractions of one group of muscles afteranother over various parts of the body. Thesecond step was shallow breathing. Thislessens the oxygen transport in the lungsand thus decreases the activities of thenerves and other parts of the organism sinceactivity and relaxation cannot occur at thesame time. The third step was to avoid

thought. For man today this is generally noteasy. One way of accomplishing it is byimagining, in total darkness and silence, thedarkness of black velvet, and thinking of nothing else. Through these three steps theEssenes brought a kind of semiconsciousness into which a new thoughtor feeling could be readily introduced into

the subconscious.

The thought introduced in this way should berhythmic enough to maintain the state of relaxation and semi-consciousness. And itshould have sufficient power to penetrate intothe subconscious and be completely acceptedas reality. These preconditions of consciouslyplacing thoughts and feelings in thesubconscious mind were perfectly met in thepractice of the Essene Communions.

It was shown to be entirely up to eachindividual what is added to the content of hissubconscious mind, what kind of new cells he

will build into it. He can deviate from the lawand be a slave to his subconscious, or he cantake an active part in its regeneration.

The Essene's knowledge of the consciousmind was as profound as theirunderstanding of the subconscious. Theirconcept of psychology was so all-sided theyknew the obectives of their Communionscould not be attained through intellectualprocesses alone, but that the force of feelings is also necessary. Knowledge mustarouse an emotion before action is

produced.

Feeling is not merely an involuntary process,as many people believe. It is a part of theactivity of will. The Essenes considered willcontains, or is the mechanism of, three factors:thought, feeling and action. This concept canbe illustrated in modern terms by comparisonto the parts of an automobile. Thought is thesteering wheel; feeling is the motor or force;action corresponds to the wheels. To arrive ata particular destination determined upon bywill, all three parts must work in collaboration.

An objective is thought of, a desire or feelingis aroused, action takes place.

Will can be used to arouse feeling; itfrequently must be used if a desired feelingis to be aroused. It can be developed to dothis by training. A technique known to theEssenes enabled an individual to use the will




in whatever way he might choose.

Few know this; few know their feelings canbe mastered. This is because they do notknow how to connect their thoughts andtheir feelings so the desired action results.They may have right knowledge but act inways contrary to the knowledge; they mayhave right knowledge of health, for instance,but continue to eat foods that are harmful.But an emotion, such as the fear of pain ordeath, will cause them to act rightly.

Of the three forces, thought, feeling andaction, thought is the youngest, and

consequently the weakest influence in man'sconsciousness. But man is evolving; his powerof thought is increasing steadily. Thought isman's title to nobility. It is a faculty under hisindividual control; he can think about anysubject he wishes. He can control his feelingsby thought.

Feelings have a history of hundreds of thousands of years and consequently havebuilt up a much stronger momentum thanthought. Consequently they, not thought,govern most of man's actions. Instincts

control animals. But man, if he wishes tocease representing the forces of retrogression, must learn to control bothinstinct and feeling. This he can do throughwill.

The Essenes believed man should analyze histhoughts and feelings and determine whichgive him power to carry out a desired actionand which paralyze it.

If he does a good deed and analyzes it he canfind out what thoughts and feelings prompted

his action. He will then understand what kindof thoughts and feelings he should foster.

He will find the deed was not prompted byan abstract thought or a cold intellectualconcept. Deeds are prompted by thoughtsthat have vitality and color, that evokefeeling. Only then do they have enough forceto result in action.

Color and vitality are given to thought by

creative imagination. Thoughts must createimages that are alive. Eastern people havelong practiced the art of making thoughtsliving, full of imagery and pictures. But it isan art that has been much neglected andwell nigh forgotten in the West.

Scattered, incoherent thoughts drifting fromone thing to another, are only pale wraiths,without life. They are sterile, arousing nofeeling, no action. They are valueless.

There is always a feeling behind every action.

A right feeling is necessary to produce a rightaction. Right feelings are sources of energy,harmony and happiness. If they are notsourccs of these qualities, they are not onlyvalueless; they are dangerous.

Feelings can be placed into one of twocategories: those that create energy and thosethat exhaust it. Through this analysis man canbegin to develop will.

By strengthening all the feelings that createenergy and avoiding all those that lead to its

exhaustion, the Essenes found that will isacquired. The exercise of will meanspersevering and patient effort. Through it anindividual's superior feelings will graduallycreate a vast storehouse of energy andharmony; and the inferior feelings, leading toweakness and lack of balance, will eventuallybe eliminated.

The feeling that creates the greatest energy islove, in all its manifestations, for love is theprimordial source of all existence, of allsources of energy, harmony and knowledge.

Manifested in terrestrial nature it gives all thatis necessary for health. Manifested in thehuman organism it gives dynamic harmony toall the cells, organs and senses of theorganism. Manifested in the consciousness itmakes it possible for man to understandcosmic and natural law, including social andcultural laws, and to employ them as sourcesof harmony and knowledge. Will is the key to




the manifestation of this greatest source of energy.

The three enemies of will are dispersion of energy, laziness and sensuality. These threecan lead to another formidable enemy of will:disease. Good health is the will's great friend.A dynamic healthy individual commands, andthe will obeys; whereas muscular pain ornervous weakness paralyzes the will!. This wasone of the reasons the Essenes laid such stresson good health and the way of living andthinking that produces health.

The practice of the Communions required

continual exercise and use of will. Theyconsidered every great value in human cultureowes its creation to the exercise of the will,and that true values were only produced bythose who use the will. They thoroughlyrealized the necessity of educating it andconsidered the key to its education is thedirection of the feelings by a powerful creativeimagination.

Through their profound understanding of psychological forces the Essene Communionstaught man the Way to freedom, the way of

liberation from blind acceptance of negativeconditions either in the physical body or themind. They showed the way of optimalevolution of both mind and body.

Chapter 8

Individual Inventory

Thousands of years ago the Essenes practiceda system of psychoanalysis which was muchmore all-sided than psychoanalysis aspracticed today. It is remote from us in timebut has a universal quality that modernpsychotherapy lacks.

It represents a personal inventory of theEssene ideals of conduct and individualevolution, and can be of the greatest value tocontemporary man as a balance sheet of hisdegree of harmony with the Law.

The Essenes, considering as they did thatman lives in the midst of a field of forces,knew that the natural and cosmic forceswhich surround him and flow through himare superior, positive forces. But they alsoknew that man by his deviations from thelaw in thinking, feeling and acting constantlycreates negative, inferior forces in the midst




of which he also lives. He is connected withall of these forces and cannot be separated

from them; moreover he is alwayscooperating, consciously or unconsciouslywith the superior forces or with the inferiorones. He cannot be neutral.

Under this Essene system, which was firstpracticed at the time of Zoroaster, theindividual made a weekly self analysis of histhoughts, words and deeds. This balancingshowed the extent to which he wascooperating with or deviating from thesuperior forces, and gave a cross-section of his character, abilities and physical

condition, thus indicating the degree of hisevolution in life.

The analysis enabled him to recognize hisstrong and weak points. By sincerely andvigorously striving to make his thinking,feeling and actions ever better and better, heprogressed with the life-time job of self improvement.

There may be some who feel that with all themodern sciences it is unnecessary to go back8000 years to an ancient teaching. But it is a

question how much the developments of science have accomplished in increasinghuman happiness and well being. Thegeneral insecurity and neurosis of thepresent day and the widespread economicand social unrest give a definitely negativeanswer. Man has gained an enormousamount of theoretical knowledge in theframework of his scientific culture but thishas not increased his happiness or individualevolution. It has not served to connect himwith the universe, the cosmic system, or toshow him his place and role in it.

Without such knowledge man cannot followthe path of optimal evolution for himself orfor the planet.

The present day neurosis is caused by man'scurrent deviations from the law of harmonywith natural and cosmic forces. If a man trieshis best to live in harmony with them he will

never develop neurosis.

Psychology today tends to emphasize only oneor two of these natural forces. Freud, forinstance, considered deviations from the law of the natural force of sex caused man'sinharmony; others have concentrated on otherforms of deviation. But the system practiced inZoroaster's time considered harmony with allthe natural and cosmic forces to be necessaryfor all-around health and psychologicalbalance. Its superiority over other systemsrests in its all-sidedness and universality.

The job of self-improvement, it shows, has to

be carried on day by day, by the individualhimself. Psychoanalysis, on the other hand,depends largely on the analyst, for the personbeing analyzed assumes a somewhat passiverole. In the Zoroastrian method the individual'sachievement of harmony is the life-time task of the individual, not some one else's job to becompleted in a couple of years or less.

The sixteen elements used in the systemembrace every aspect of human life. Theycorrespond, in a degree, to the fourteenforces symbolized by the Essene Tree of Life.

It was not the purpose of the Essenes, eitherin the time of Zoroaster or later, to divide thenatural and cosmic forces into any rigid orartificial pattern, but simply to consider themin such ways as would express most clearlytheir value and utilization in man's life.

Perfection was not demanded in the analysis,but the individual was urged to strivecontinually to improve his relationship toeach of the sixteen forces and to achieveever greater harmony and utilization of theirpowers and energies. The individual who

does this will enjoy an actively creative lifebringing him the highest measure of happiness and service to others. The onewho continues to deviate will find lifebecoming less and less interesting andrewarding while misery and frustration willbecome increasingly great.

The teachings of the Essenes gave man a clear




knowledge of his place and role in theuniverse and their method of weekly self-

analysis enabled them to know how clearlythey understood the teaching and howthoroughly they were practicing it andfollowing the path of their individualevolution.

Of the sixteen forces that were utilized inmaking the analysis, eight belonged to theearthly forces and eight to the cosmic ones.The earthly forces were the sun, water, air,food, man, earth, health and joy. The cosmicpowers were power, love, wisdom, thepreserver, the Creator, eternal life, work and

peace.

The analysis considered each of the forcesfrom three different aspects:

1. Is the power or force understood2. Does the individual feel the significance of the force deeply and sincerely3. Is the power used continually and in thebest possible way

These are the forces of nature which man is tolearn to understand and utilize. The following

eight powers of the cosmos are even moreimportant in man's life, for he cannot live incomplete harmony with the earthly forcesunless he is also in harmony with the heavenlypowers.

THE COSMIC FORCES

1. Power is manifested continually throughman's actions and deeds, both of which arethe result of his cooperation or lack of cooperation with all other powers and forces,in accord with the iron law of cause and

effect. The individual is to understand theimportance of good deeds; and he is torealize that his personality, position andenvironment in life are the result of his pastdeeds, even as his future will be exactly whathis present deeds make it. He is therefore tostrive at all times to perform good deeds thatexpress harmony with the laws of both

nature and the cosmos.

2. Love is expressed in the form of gentle andkind words to others, which affect theindividual's own health and happiness as wellas that of others. Sincere love toward allbeings is to be manifested by harmoniousfeelings and words.

3. Wisdom is manifested in the form of goodthoughts and it is man's privilege and right toincrease his knowledge and understanding inevery way possible so that he may think onlygood thoughts. He is to seek to grow inwisdom so as to understand more and more

the cosmic order and his own role in it. Onlyby attaining a degree of wisdom can anindividual learn to hold only good thoughts inhis consciousness and to refuse to entertainnegative, destructive thoughts about anyperson, place, condition or thing.

4. Preservation of values concerns the powerto preserve all that is useful and of true value,whether a tree, plant, house, relationshipbetween people or harmony in any form. Whenanyone destroys, or lets any good thing go towaste, deteriorate or be damaged, whether

material or immaterial, he is cooperating withthe negative destructive forces of the world.Every opportunity is to be used to preventdamage to whatever has value.

5. Creation signifies the necessity for man touse his creative powers, since his role on theplanet is to continue the work of the Creator.He is therefore to try to do something originaland creative, something new and different, asoften as he can, whether it is an invention of some kind, a work of art, or anything whichwill benefit others.

6. Eternal Life concerns man's sincerity withhimself and others in all he does and with allthose whom he meets. He is to be deeplysincere in analyzing his relationship, hisunderstanding and utilization of all the forcesof nature and the cosmos; and he is to makeevery effort to evaluate himself honestly as he




actually is without rationalizing or justifyingthe things he does or says or thinks.

7.Work is the precondition of many othervalues. It means the performance of one'sdaily tasks with care and efficiency. It is anindividual's contribution to society and aprecondition of happiness for all concerned,for when one person does not perform hiswork properly, others have to do it. Man is tolearn to have a deep feeling of satisfaction inhis work so that he may return to society allhe receives from it.

8. Peace is to be created and maintained by

every individual within and around himself that he may be an instrument in helping toprevent inharmony, enmity and wars, since thecondition of the whole of humanity dependsupon the condition of its atoms, theindividuals who compose it. The individual isto feel deeply the need for this inner peaceand to do all he can to establish and maintainit wherever he is.

PROLOGUE TO THE COMMUNIONS Previous to speaking the actual words of a communion, the Essene solemnly and reverently repeated

the following prologue: "I enter the Eternal and Infinite Garden with reverence to the Heavenly Fa-ther, the Earthly Mother and Great Masters, reverence to the holy, pure and saving Teaching, rever-ence to the Brotherhood of the Elect." He then thought reverently about the angel or force withwhich he was about to commune, contemplating its meaning and purpose in his own life and body, astaught in the first part of the Communions. Following this prologue he spoke the actual words of theCommunion.

THE ACTUAL NOON CONTEMPLATIONS The Noon Peace Contemplations, dedicated each day to a different one of the seven aspects of Peace, were addressed to the Heavenly Father, requesting him to send the Angel of Peace to all, andthen to send a certain one of the angels to strengthen each aspect of the Sevenfold Peace.
