to go above the double doors at the back of the church which will be a memorial to Bob Lee Watt. When the new window is installed, the frames on the two windows needing repair will be done at the same time. The cost of repairing these 2 windows is thanks to Jimmy Trotter. Fr. Rick stated that when the Bishop comes again, a blessing of the window will occur.

The Junior Warden’s Report included the fol lowing: J im McCloskey reports the deck work at the Rectory has been completed. The work days at the Church during June proved to be successful, but we need to be proactive in this area. Jim repaired two “kneelers” in the church that needed repair. He will work on the gutters next as it has been reported that some nails are coming out.

Other Ministry areas: We welcome Wanda Fields to our Christian Education committee. She will soon begin a Sunday school class for the youngest children. There will be one service on September 15, 2013 at 10 am. Beth Ely will be in attendance to help us kick off our Stewardship focus. Fried chicken will be served afterwards and parishioners are asked to bring their favorite dish for a covered dish event! John and Gayle Ferguson will be leading our efforts in Stewardship this year. It is reported that Bill Horsley is ready to go with the Adult Sunday school classes. Be in prayer about new vestry members for next year.

After Compline, the meeting was adjourned around 8:40 pm.

Fr. Rick convened the meeting at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on August 12, 2013 at 7:00 pm with an opening prayer. Members present: Fr. Rick, Parker Graham, Sarah Cobb, Janet DeBerry, Don Gwarek, Elisabeth Pugh, Chris Hicks, Jim McCloskey and Todd Walker. Absent: Laura Felts

Bill Sutton, Chairperson for the Endowment Committee, was in attendance to make a recommendation to deposit a part of the Endowment Money Market to the Common Trust Fund of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. After discussion, the Vestry g r a n t e d a p p r o v a l f o r t h e recommendation.

Ken Avery provided the Treasurer’s Report. Copies of the reports were distributed and reviewed.

The Rector’s Report included the following: Fr. Rick is on vacation this week. The Rev. Audra Abt, Assistant to the Director for Children’s Ministry at St. Andrew’s in Greensboro, will be conducting the service on Sunday, August 18. Fr. Rick is going to meet with the Worship Committee to propose having Morning Prayer on occasion due to parishioners’ requests. Fr. Rick proposed purchasing an aumbry box; it will be a reverent and secured area for the reserve sacrament. The reserve sacrament will be used for emergencies, shut-ins, and so forth.

The Senior Warden’s Report included the following: Parker Graham stated that a bequest from Claude Cook has been received and placed in the bank. Parker also reported that a stained-glass window of a cross is slated

Kick-off Month

September is here! It’s time for Kick-Off Sunday. But, in a truer sense, September is really Kick-Off Month. Everything is starting back up here at St. Thomas. Just consider the schedule ahead:

Wed, September 11th – OUR CHOIR BEGINS ITS REHEARSALS AGAIN. This is an incredibly important ministry at St. Thomas; not only for how the choir draws our thoughts and focus to God, and carries our own praises to a higher level, but also in how it gives us courage to let our own voices ring out in praise to God.

Fri, September 13th – IT’S SHRIMPFEST! There’s nothing unlucky here, even if it is a “Friday the 13th.” Our annual Shrimpfest is always one of the best attended and loved events conducted by any church in the Reidsville community at large. Come and enjoy some really good eating.

Sunday, September 15th – STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY! Last January, our vestry was blessed by Canon Beth Ely when she led us in a re t rea t on the happy s ide of Stewardship. The vestry felt it was important for all of us to get the chance to hear this message, so on this Sunday we will have just one service at 10:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon together in the Parish House where Canon Beth will share this highly positive message on stewardship with us all. Come and enjoy this enlightening talk.

Sat, September 21st – THE CHOIR GOES ON RETREAT; well, for just the morning. This is going to be a fun time for each person who is part of this great ministry, or for anyone who would like to investigate the possibility of being part of it. The choir will be lightly “singing through” a good deal of its Fall and early Advent music. Come and find out if this ministry is for you.

Sunday September 22nd – THIS IS KICK-OFF SUNDAY! Everything starts up on this morning. The worship schedule returns to our normal 8:30 a.m. Rite I contemplative service with the return of the 11:00 a.m. Rite II chanted/choral service. Sunday School starts too. This year, in addition to our Adult class and our middle-school/high school class, there will be a brand new children’s class for our youngest members taught by our returning former DCE Wanda Fields. Something else brand new will be the start up of our new youth group program. Stay tuned for details!

Sunday September 29th – ONE M O R E E X C I T I N G “ N E W ” DEVELOPMENT HAPPENS! This year we will be reviving an old St. Thomas t r ad i t ion : MORNING PRAYER. Once upon a time, the Service of Morning Prayer at St. Thomas was the regular service. That’s why so many of us look forward to it when it comes around on a very rare occasion. Starting this Sunday, every time a month has a fifth Sunday, that fifth Sunday will be the occasion for the

Service of Morning Prayer. The 8:30 a.m. service will still have the Eucharist each time, so those who do not want to miss it will still be able to come for it; just a little earlier. Of course, if you would like to have both the Eucharist and experience Morning Prayer that same morning, then come to both services! You’ll be doubly blessed!

A great new year is coming together at St. Thomas, and it all begins in just two weeks. So clear your schedules and get ready for “kick-off”.

Fr. Rick

Thursday through Sunday August 15-18 Fr. Rick, D’aun, Tom and Mary Ham spent what was by all accounts a fantastic weekend at Trinity Center, Pine Knoll Shores, NC. It was the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Conference on Church Music in the Anglican Tradition. This year’s clinician was David Flood, Canterbury Cathedral Organist and Master of the Choirsters. David is responsible for daily music at Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, and also oversees musical arrangements for all special occasions, such as the enthronement of Archbishop

Rowan Williams, the visit of Pope John Paul II, and the Lambeth Conference.

The Conference began 25 years ago as an initiative by the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of East Carolina to enrich the liturgical and musical life in local parishes.

Following two days of workshops and rehearsals, conference participants presented music rehearsed during the weekend at the 11:00 celebration of the Holy Eucharist at St. Francis by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.

Summer has flown by and it’s time to start a new school year at EDS! We hope everyone had a great summer. Our summer program, Kids’ Morning Out, was successful and we had a good turnout for both classes.

We are gearing up for our first day of preschool on Tuesday, September 3rd. We want to welcome the new teachers for the two-year-old class. Kelsey Chambers will be the lead teacher and Casey Piech will be the assistant. We are glad to have them with us!

As always, we are collecting BoxTops off of General Mills products. Each BoxTop is worth .10 cents for our school. Many of you have been turning them in on a regular basis and we

appreciate that! We will be submitting BoxTops for payment around October or November so please send them in soon if you have been collecting them. We usually are able to raise about $100 per year from this program which is very helpful in meeting our budget needs.

We will also be starting our annual mum sale starting in September. Please see the information in this newsletter [below] and in the September Sunday bulletins. Please call the school if you have any questions.

Please remember the school in your prayers as we start a new year and strive to provide a great learning and social atmosphere for all the children.

Thoughts on Stewardship

The other day I received an email advertising The Christian Yellow Pages. I figured anyone who would promote their product in this way must have a lofty opinion of themselves. And it strikes me as unprincipled to market one’s business as being ethical as if others are not. I looked up one firm and found that a particular owner publicized his agency as being pro-life, pro-gospel, and Christian connected. By saying, “I have a Christian company,” wouldn’t I be proclaiming that I am an extremely well thought-of and honest person? What about the establishments of the devout Jew or Muslim or the principled atheist? Will the word “Christian” give me an edge in getting more customers?

Jesus, in telling of the parable of the Good Samaritan, said that the real test of values is how much we care about those people who are outside our own group. This is not as easy as we might think. Many people who refer to themselves as Christians can be rather clannish and intolerant. And we tend to enjoy and

treat well those who are like us and think like us. I will have to admit, this is perfectly natural. In fact, we are pleasant and kind to our own circle of friends. But so are most people who are members of a particular collection of people - for example street gangs or the mafia. Jesus had his own intimate followers. However, he was inclusive of others whenever he sat down to eat a meal or went to someone else’s home – think women, tax collectors, and those outside the normal bounds of society.

When Jesus was here on earth there was no church to convert anyone to, no bibles, no creeds, and no religious sects had been formed. This was the age of Jesus before religion. If anything, I believe that Jesus came to convert us to love those around us especially those who are so different from us. Would that people were able to accomplish this before they tried to convert others to their own small vision of what Christianity should be?

Grace Moffitt

For the past several weeks friends have been saying “goodbye” to Grace Moffitt. Grace is moving back to her hometown of Asheboro. She and I had a very similar career path in that both of us held comparable jobs as Human Resource professionals. Grace began working with the Employment Security Commission before she joined Annie Penn Hospital and later Cone Health in Greensboro. She was very active in civic affairs and lent her HR expertise to local non-profits as well as to St. Thomas.

Grace, along with her deceased husband Jan, were long-time members of St. Thomas. Jan died not long ago after a lengthy illness. Grace served St. Thomas in several capacities including being a member of the vestry and a very effective Senior Warden. I always thought of her as a smart and thoughtful

person and one I could turn to for advice.

However, for all her many attributes, I will always remember Grace for her flower arranging and decorating skills. No matter what the occasion, she and Laura Felts could transform our mundane little parish house to look as if we were stepping into the ballroom of a fashionable hotel. We will miss that.

Grace, we send you and your Jack Russell terrier, Maggie, on your way with our best wishes for a wonderful life in Asheboro. We hope you do not forget we are here and will come back from time to time for a visit.

Rehearsals for the new program year begin on Wed., September 11th at 7:30 pm, in the Choir Room. If you are considering joining, now is the time!

Singing is a wonderful way to feel better physically – it helps you breathe deeper and gain the benefits from more oxygen. It also engages the mind similar to the way learning a new language does. But I think St. Augustine said it best, “When you sing, you pray twice.”

I’ve got good music planned for this year. If you have questions about choir, etc., please call or email me anytime. And, come and join us in singing to God’s glory!

Stewardship 2014Stewardship 2014

It’s hard to believe that it’s [now September] and that the hustle and bustle of school starting is just around the corner. Along with the return to the academic classroom in the fall, the church cycle also revs up with social events like the ShrimpFest and Sunday schoo l , and…the s t ewardsh ip campaign. We’ll be talking once again about what the mission of the church is, how we pay for what we do, how much it takes to accomplish it and what YOUR (the congregation) role in meeting those needs is.

I t i s a b o u t m o n e y — a n uncomfortable topic for many of us. But it’s not just about money. It’s about time, ideas, energy and will. Keeping the electricity on is just part of the formula for “keeping the lights on” at St. Thomas. So as you begin to think about stewardship and your potential contribution for 2014—I’d like to broaden your perspective. Everything you are and have has value—the nonpro f i t s ca l l i t ‘ l i ke -k ind ’

contribution. Can you keep the nursery open one Sunday? Teach a children’s Sunday school class? Drive youth to the Soup Kitchen? Invite a newcomer to attend services? All of these things have value that build the community of the church and enhance the mission of St. Thomas. So if your wallet is bare, don’t assume that you have nothing to give; some of the greatest gifts have little monetary value.

Erma Bombeck once wrote: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’” The parable of the talents in Matthew isn’t about the coins the master entrusted to his slaves—it’s about what they did with the talents they were given. In the modern context, we often extend that story to include not just our money but other non-tangible gifts—our ‘like-kind’. What might you share to keep the spiritual lights on at St. Thomas?
