Dear Collector,

Thanks to those readers who have written to me expressingtheir good wishes and giving their views on our issueprogram. Your feedback is important to us and we doconsider your views in our planning and evaluation processes– so keep writing!

It was pleasing to see the warm regard for Margaret Courtand Rod Laver when they were presented with theirAustralian Legends awards at the Australian Open Tennis inJanuary. Their achievements, and their stamp products, aredescribed in this issue, and you can read more about them inour book Advantage Australia.

Our three stamp issues and two postal stationery issues inthis Bulletin range from beautiful flowers and butterflies toindigenous art and paintings by eminent artists of Australian-European descent.

In March, Blooms: Australian Cultivars showcases fiveAustralian flower cultivars with a lovely photographicapproach to the plants in bloom.

In contrast the April Australian Antarctic Territory issueuses a bold linocut technique to evoke the ruggedenvironment and four sturdy ‘Dan’ ships that played a vitalrole in Australia’s Antarctic exploration and research.

Breathtakingly beautiful original illustrations ofbutterflies feature on new international pre-paid envelopesand aerogrammes. New definitive domestic pre-paidenvelopes feature contemporary and historic art from theTorres Strait islands.

In May art from four twentieth century artists kicks off thenew Australian Paintings series.

The special weddings booklet we released in 2002, wasvery popular with collectors and postal users. So in 2003 weare presenting a range of Special Occasion booklets to helpcelebrate life’s milestones and special events. The booklets usethe tabbed stamps from January’s Celebration and Nationissue.

I hope you enjoy collecting these issues!Until next time,

Amber McDougall, Manager Philatelic

The recipients of the 2003 Australia Day,Australian Legends Award and the subjects ofthis year’s Australian Legends stamp issue –Margaret Court MBE and Rod Laver MBE –are undeniably giants of, not simply Australiantennis but world tennis.

The 2003 Legends Margaret Court is possibly the greatestwomen’s tennis player of all time. She wasborn in Albury in New South Wales, on 16 July 1942 and rose to prominence whenshe won her first Australian singles title. In1970 Court won the second ever female GrandSlam and she remains the only player to achievea Grand Slam in doubles as well as in singles.

Court went on to win seven Australiantitles in a row and in 1963 she was the firstAustralian woman to win Wimbledon. Sheretired briefly then returned to internationaltennis in 1967 and continued winning majortitles after the birth of the first of her fourchildren.

Australian LegendsAUSTRALIA DAY 24 January 2003

After his second year as the No. 1 in theworld, Laver turned professional in 1962. Whenthe division between professional and amateurtennis disappeared in 1968, Laver was able onceagain to play in the traditional tournaments andbecame the first open Wimbledon champion.Had he played in these intervening years, Laverundoubtedly would have won far more GrandSlam championships.

Rodney George Laver (Rod), Australia’sgreatest men’s tennis player, was born on 9 August 1938 at Rockhampton in Queensland. He is the only player in the history of tennis towin a Grand Slam twice.

Laver won a total of eleven Grand Slamsingles titles including four Wimbledon men’s

‘Advantage Australia: Rod Laver & Margaret Court, Legends of theGrand Slam’ by Alan Trengove provides afascinating insight into the dramatic stories of Rod Laverand Margaret Court retold from new perspectives thathistory offers, and with an array of rediscovered andrarely seen photos.

Both Rod Laver and Margaret Courtdisplayed a typically Australiancapacity for hard work, courage, persistence and a will to win, as well asunderstated patriotism. Combined withextraordinary natural talent, suchqualities made Laver and Courtinternationally supreme.By resourcefully surmounting earlydisadvantages and reacting to brilliantsuccesses with grace and modesty, they epitomise the spirit of Australia. Each remains just as inspirational tomodern generations as they were to

Australian CultivarsBlooms

Australians have long been enthusiasticgardeners. Early settlers introduced plantspopular in Europe, such as roses and camellias,to remind them of ‘home’, and the country’svivid indigenous flowers also found anappreciative audience. Today most homegardens in Australia combine introduced andnative flowering plants.

When selecting plants, modern gardenerslook for more than just beauty. They demandplants that are hearty, disease resistant and easyto grow, no matter what colour their thumb.Whether they realise it or not, today’s gardenersowe much of their success to the availability ofAustralian cultivars. Five Australian flowercultivars are featured in this special issue of fivestamps.

Despite the continent’s reputation for harsh, unforgiving environments, its diversity ofclimates and soils mean that almost any plantcan be (and probably is) grown somewhere inAustralia.

The stamps feature Simon Griffiths’ superbphotographs of the five cultivars. Each of thecultivars was photographed at the peak of itsblooming period.

The cultivars in the stamp issue werespecifically bred to produce spectacular bloomson hardy, disease resistant plants suitable forhome cultivation. All are entirely Australianbred, and are widely available throughcommercial nurseries. Three of the featuredAustralian cultivars are from introducedspecies, the remaining two are natives.

The issueAs well as the design set of five stamps, the issueincludes a sheetlet of ten gummed stamps, rollsand booklets of self-adhesive stamps, first daycovers, a sheetlet pack, a collector pack, and aset of five maximum cards. The ‘Bush Tango’kangaroo paw will also be produced as apostcard.

Cultivar...a cultivated variety developed by selectively breeding in order to enhance or minimisetraits common to other members of its species.

The work featured on the stamp, FamilyHome: Suburban Exterior of 1993 is quintessen-tial Arkley; the façade of an ordinary Australiansuburban home rendered in bright colours witha pronounced concern for flat pattern. Thepainting is acrylic on canvas and is in the collection of Monash University, Melbourne.

This issue is the first in a new series that willfeature paintings by eminent Australian artists. The works will be selected from the history ofpainting since European settlement inAustralia, and will draw on the country’s publicart collections. $1.45 Robert Jacks, Cord Long Drawn,Expectant, 1985Robert Jacks (b. 1943) is one of Australia’sforemost abstract artists. In 1982 Jacks beganhis ‘Wedge’ paintings. These canvases areabstracts of simple geometric shapes arrangeddiagonally, creating an illusion of depth anddynamic movement.

Cord Long Drawn, Expectant was painted inMelbourne in 1985 during the artist’s ‘Wedge’period. The diagonal shards of textured colourcreate an illusion of three-dimensionality andcompeting forces. The work is in the collectionof the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)in Sydney.

$2.45 Joy Hester, Girl, 1957Joy Hester (1920-1960) was the only woman inthe Angry Penguins group that also includedSidney Nolan and Hester’s first husband Albert Tucker.

Girl, the work featured on the stamp, waspainted in brush and ink in 1957. A simpleblack and white image, it shows a young girl, lying on her stomach, with her thoughtful facecradled in her arms. This sense of contemplat-ive stillness is disrupted by the girl’s streaminghair, which seems to propel her through thenight like a speeding comet. Girl is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Butterflies are found in many areas of Australia. However, of the approximately 385 species ofbutterflies recorded in Australia, more thanthree-quarters occur in the tropical north andnorth-east of the continent, especially in thetropical rainforest areas where the host plantsand habitats for many species are abundant. In the southern temperate areas, includingTasmania, butterflies appear seasonally and are less active during the winter. In the aridcentre many species occur, but their populationnumbers vary enormously with seasonalconditions.

The butterflies featured on the envelopeshave been selected on the basis of geographicand family diversity, and visual attractiveness.None have been featured previously onAustralian philatelic products.

The design approach is illustrative. The artistis Ego Guiotto who in 2002 illustrated theCocos (Keeling) Island Sea Turtles andChristmas Island Birds stamp issues.

To show the impact of Guiotto’s stunningartwork, we have concentrated on the stampand illustration areas of the envelopes, ratherthan showing the entire envelope.
