Steve Pemberton Divisional Vice President Chief Diversity Officer Walgreens

Steve Pemberton is Divisional Vice-President and Chief Diversity Officer for Walgreens. His appointment is the first in the company’s 113 year history. Steve is responsible for over-seeing the company’s efforts to create and maintain a di-verse and inclusive environ-ment that reflects the culture, people and perspectives of the company while reflecting its current and future customers and communities. He and his team are specifically focused on the following areas: strategic diversity manage-ment, diversity councils and business re-source groups, disability initiatives, supplier diversity and compliance objectives. Prior to assuming his role at Walgreens, Steve was Chief Diversity Officer and Vice-President of Diversity and Inclusion at Mon-ster.com, the leading global online careers property where he had end-to-end manage-ment responsibilities for the Diversity and Inclusion business unit which focused on helping employers diversify their workforce. He is widely considered a subject matter expert on matters of diversity and inclusion and its importance to the sustainability of organizations and the communities they serve. A graduate of Boston College, Steve was a ward of the state for much of his childhood. In 2012 he chronicled that experience in his best-selling memoir, A Chance in the World (Harper Collins). Steve’s extraordinary life journey continues to inspire audiences across the world; his tireless advocacy has earned him national recognition from The Trumpet Foundation to the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation.

With an average of 300,000 of those jobs left unfilled and the growth of STEM careers is on track to nearly double other careers. According to Research in Higher Education, STEM proves to be the most profitable for minority students, whether they actually pursue the STEM field professionally or not. Minorities who major in STEM subjects but don’t pursue STEM careers earn at least 25% more than their peers while those who pursue STEM careers earn 50%. A-4 Don’t Throw the Flag Too Soon This workshop is aimed at those who believe that all persons should be given the opportunity to achieve amazing results. Dr. Haynes will share his unique philosophy, honed as a NFL football official, is to give effective thought to a decision and “Don’t Throw the Flag Too Soon”. As a successful educator and NFL official, Dr. Haynes recognizes that decisions made in haste can be harmful to those we lead or teach. Poor decisions can have dire consequences that can have a lifelong effect. Dr. Haynes will share his formula for success which includes redemption, second chances, and beating the odds. He will share real-life stories where amazing things happened when compassion and thought were mixed with the opportunity for another try. If you have not gotten the best results from your Specialists or your students, perhaps, you have thrown the flag too soon.

A-10 A 100% College Acceptance Rate in an ‘F’ School? 100% of my 233 students, with an average of 6 barriers to success, were accepted to college. If your class looks like mine – 100% minority, 35% chronically absent, 25% failed standardized test, 60% receiving free/reduced lunch and 77% never holding a job – the world might be telling your kids they can’t compete but I give you everything you need to prove the world wrong.

Auditor Clarence Mingo’s life and career have been about service to his

country and his community. A veteran of the United States Army, Clarence

answered the call of service and served honorably with the coalition forces

that liberated Kuwait during the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Upon his return, Clarence attended The Ohio State University where he earned his undergraduate and law degree in a little more than five years. Clarence then re-focused his commitment to service to his community as an attorney in private practice, helping to protect those citizens most in need. Franklin County courts frequently appointed Clarence to serve as a Guardian ad Litem (child advocate), representing the interests of children in abuse, neglect and divorce cases.

He also serviced the Legal Aid Society of Columbus’ Neighborhood Service’s project. In this capacity, Clarence was one of three attorneys who represented indigent county residents with legal issues involving housing, public benefits, civil protective orders, and custody matters. He also fought for funding in an effort to expand and further develop the project's reach and influence on the indigent population in Columbus, Ohio.

In 2007, the late Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, Thomas J. Moyer, appointed Clarence as a commis-sioner in the Ohio Court of Claims. Clarence served as one of seven commissioners with statewide appellate jurisdiction in victims of crime cases. In 2009, Clarence was appointed as Franklin County Auditor. In 2010, Franklin County voters awarded Clarence a full four-year term. In 2011, Governor John Kasich appointed Clarence to serve on Ohio’s Lottery Commission.

As Auditor, Clarence ensures that Franklin County residents are offered the best public service in fiscal, real estate and consumer protection. He understands the importance of maintaining a modern office with capable staff and the latest technology to compliment their effort. Clarence and his wife Angela married in 1992. They are the proud parents of Annalise and Ava Mingo. The family resides in New Albany, Ohio and look forward to greater opportuni-ties for service.

B-8 Stand Up & Stand Out: Working with Isolated, Excluded and Bullied Students Nova Southeastern University concluded that when a person is isolated, excluded, teased or bullied during their formative years; it is very difficult to overcome the damage done. In fact, 15% of chronically absent students cite bullying as the reason while 50% of military children drop out of high school; nearly all of whom cite isolation due to frequent moves. These experiences can be so damaging that, according to the USC, victims are more likely to abuse substances and spend time in prison while both Johns Hopkins University and the National Governors Association have consistently found that chronic absenteeism is the strongest predictor of dropping out of high school. This workshop will give you the tools you need to identify, recruit and retain isolated, excluded, bullied and bullying students.

D-6 The Speaker’s Art From a lifetime of public speaking – from a teen-age stump speaker for political candidates in her native Oklahoma, to a successful public servant, to a business owner and acclaimed author and speaker – Carolyn Warner has honed her craft in every imaginable venue. In this dialogue with JAG Specialists, she shares her “tricks of the trade” – from mental, physical and research preparation to platform techniques and strategies, and even talks about the different challenges faced by women and men speakers. “Nobody is ever too well-prepared,” according to Carolyn. “If you look like you’re completely relaxed but focused, and everybody in your audience believes you know precisely what you’re doing and that you’re enjoying it as much as they are, that means you have done your job. No matter if it’s an audience of one, one hundred, or one thousand, they are giving you the most precious gift they have – their time – and you have the responsibility of making sure that they have invested wisely.

Dr. Carolyn Warner is Founder and President of Corporate Education

Consulting, Inc. (CECi). Her firm offers advisement, speaking, seminar and

training services focusing on workforce/work place issues, education, lead-

ership, women's issues and public/private partnerships. CECi's clients are

Fortune 500 companies, foundations and numerous national associations.

Warner delivers over forty keynote presentations a year, both in the U.S.

and abroad including three European Union conferences on education and

skills training related topics.

Warner was a Congressional appointee to the National Skills Standards

Board (NSSB) and was a delegate to the White House Conference on

Small Business. She also serves as national Treasurer of Jobs for Ameri-

ca's Graduates, the nation's most successful school-to-work transition pro-

gram, and is past President of the Arizona Women's Forum.

Warner served for twelve years as Arizona's elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first non-

educator to hold that post. Increased accountability and the formation of business-education partnerships

were hallmarks of her administration. Under her leadership, Arizona had the nation's first sequential job skills

identification initiative. She was then her party's nominee for Governor, narrowly losing in an historic three-

way general election.

In 1998, Warner received an honorary Doctorate from Northern Arizona University in recognition of her ser-

vice to education and the community. Among her numerous awards are Policy Leader of the Year by the Na-

tional Association of State Boards of Education, the Racial Justice Award from the YWCA of the USA, and

the Carl Perkins Humanitarian Award from the Association for Career and Technical Education. She is the

author of four books, including the best-selling The Last Word, A Treasury of Women's Quotes.
