Cat C6.4 Engine. The Cat C6.4 withACERT Technology introduces a seriesof evolutionary, incremental improve -ments that provide breakthrough enginetechnology. The building blocks ofACERT Technology are fuel delivery,air management and electronic control.ACERT Technology optimizesengine performance while meetingEU Stage IIIA emission regulations.With its proven technology,robust components and precisionmanufacturing, you can count on thisengine to power up at start time andkeep working productively all shift long.
Performance. The 320D L, equippedwith the C6.4 engine with ACERTTechnology, provides 7% more poweras compared to the 3066 TA in the320C. The additional power delivers aspeed and efficiency advantage in highproduction applications.
Automatic Engine Speed Control.The two-stage, one-touch controlmaximizes fuel efficiency and reducessound levels.
ADEM™ A4 Engine Controller.The ADEM A4 electronic control modulemanages fuel delivery to get the bestperformance per liter of fuel used.The engine management system providesflexible fuel mapping, allowing theengine to respond quickly to varyingapplication needs. It tracks engine andmachine conditions while keeping theengine operating at peak efficiency.
Electronic Control Module.The Electronic Control Module (ECM)works as the “brain” of the engine’scontrol system, responding quickly tooperating variables to maximize engineefficiency. Fully integrated with sensorsin the engine’s fuel, air, coolant, andexhaust systems, the ECM storesand relays information on conditionssuch as rpm, fuel consumption, anddiagnostic information.
Fuel Delivery. The Cat C6.4 featureselectronic controls that govern the fuelinjection system. Multiple injectionfuel delivery involves a high degreeof precision. Precisely shaping thecombustion cycle lowers combustionchamber temperatures, generatingfewer emissions and optimizing fuelcombustion. This translates into morework output for your fuel cost.
Cooling System. The cooling fanis directly driven from the engine.An electrically controlled viscous clutchfan reduces fan noise. The optimum fanspeed is calculated based on the targetengine speed, coolant temperature,hydraulic oil temperature and actualfan speed. When fan speed is reduced,there’s more power available for otherfunctions – and less fuel is burned.

Component Layout. To optimizeefficiency of hydraulic performance,the hydraulic components are locatedclose together, which reduces frictionloss and pressure drops in the lines.
System Pressure. System pressurehas been increased to 350 bar, whichattributes to improved performance:• Increased stick and bucket forces
(up 7% higher than the 320C)to better handle those tight diggingconditions
• More drawbar pull (206 kN) toprovide more ability to climb slopes,easier spot turns and improved travelin poor underfoot conditions
• More lift capacity, generally overthe front where you are generallyhydraulically limited
Pilot System. The pilot pump isindependent from the main pumpsand controls the front linkage,swing and travel operations.
Hydraulic Cross Sensing System.The hydraulic cross sensing systemutilizes each of two hydraulic pumps to100 percent of engine power, under alloperating conditions. This improvesproductivity with faster implementspeeds and quicker, stronger pivot turns.
Boom and Stick Regeneration Circuit.Boom and stick regeneration circuitsaves energy during boom-down andstick-in operation which increasesefficiency, reduces cycle times andpressure loss for higher productivity,lower operating costs and increasedfuel efficiency.
HydraulicsCat ® hydraulics deliver power and precise control to keep material moving.
Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve. The auxiliaryvalve is standard on the 320D L.Control Circuits are available asattachments, allowing for operation ofhigh and medium pressure tools such asshears, grapples, hammers, pulverizers,multi-processors and vibratory platecompactors.
Hydraulic Cylinder Snubbers.Snubbers are located at the rod-end ofthe boom cylinders and both ends of thestick cylinder to cushion shocks whilereducing sound levels and extendingcomponent life.

Joystick Control. Joystick controlshave low lever effort and aredesigned to match the operator’snatural wrist and arm position.
Hydraulic Activation Control Lever.For added safety, this lever must bein the operate position to activatethe machine control functions.
Automatic Climate Control.Fully automatic climate controladjusts temperature and flow, anddetermines which air outlet is bestin each situation with a touch ofa button.
Cab Exterior (ROPS). The exteriordesign uses thick steel tubing alongthe bottom perimeter of the cab,improving the resistance of fatigueand vibration. A ROPS cab(Roll Over Protective Structure)is standard on CE-compliant units,and provides 10% more glass areathan the previous non-ROPS cab.
Cab Mounts. The cab shell isattached to the frame with viscousrubber cab mounts, which dampenvibrations and sound levels whileenhancing operator comfort.
Windows. All glass is affixeddirectly to the cab for excellentvisibility eliminating windowframes.
Wipers. Pillar-mounted wipersincrease the operator’s viewingarea and offer continuous andintermittent modes.
Skylight. An enlarged skylightwith sunshade provides excellentvisibility and ventilation.
Time delay lights. The 320D hasoptional cab working lights withtime delay functionality. Theselights have auto shut-off capability,programmable up to 90 secondsand supports safe egress out themachine and easy departure fromjob site.
Operator ComfortCaterpillar offers the most intuitive and easy to operate excavators while providing greatall around visibility and exceptional operator comfort.
Operator Station. The layout of the interior hasbeen redesigned to maximize operator comfortand reduce operator fatigue.• Frequently used switches have
been relocated for easier access.• Consoles and armrests have been redesigned
for better comfort and adjustability.• More seat options – choose from
the standard mechanical suspension seat, orthe optional air suspension seat with heater.Both provide excellent comfort.

Main Menu. Four menu options to choose from:• Settings – Adjust monitor settings, select work tool or choose

accumulated since last serviced.• Performance – Displays machine performance attributes such
as Engine Speed, Coolant and Hydraulic Oil Temperature.• Service – Allows access to machine parameters for service

Boom, Sticks and Bucket LinkageBuilt for Performance and long service life.
Reach Boom. The boom has large cross-sections and internal baffle plates to providelong life durability. The reach boom featuresan optimum design that maximizes diggingenvelopes with two stick choices:R2.9B1 and R2.5B1 sticks.
Sticks. The sticks are made of high-tensile strength steel using a large boxsection design with interior baffle platesand an additional bottom guard.The B1-family bucket associated withthese sticks have enough capacity forexcellent reach and depth in trenchingand general construction applications.• R2.9B1. This stick provides the most
versatile front linkage, with regard toreach and bucket capacity and deliversgood stability for hammer work.
• R2.5B1. Provides an excellent diggingenvelope with larger bucket sizesand provides more stability than the2900 mm stick for hammer work.
Super Long Reach Boom and Stick.This configuration is designed for lightduty applications requiring an extra largeworking envelope. With a 8850 mmboom, a 6280 mm stick and a 0.46 m3
bucket it reaches up to 15 590 mm –ideal for ditch cleaning work.

• Rollers and idlers are sealed andlubricated to extend service life.
• Track links are assembled and sealedwith grease to decrease internalbushing wear and increase life byas much as 25%, when comparedto dry seal undercarriages.
• Spring recoil system stroke has beenincreased to better relieve excesstrack tension, which can occur whenmaterial builds up between the trackand sprocket.

Air Filter Compartment. The air filterfeatures a double-element constructionfor superior cleaning efficiency. When the air cleaner plugs, a warning is displayed on the monitor screen insidethe cab.
Ground Level Service. The design andlayout of the 320D L was made with theservice technician in mind. Many servicelocations are easily accessible at groundlevel allowing critical maintenance toget done quickly and efficiently.
Pump Compartment. A service door onthe right side of the upper structureallows ground-level access to the pumpand pilot filter.
Capsule Filter. The hydraulic returnfilter, a capsule filter, is situated outsidethe hydraulic tank. This filter preventscontaminants from entering the systemwhen hydraulic oil is changed and keepsthe operation clean.

Anti-Skid Plate. Anti-skid plate covers top of storage box and upper structure to prevent slipping during maintenance.
Fan Guard. Engine radiator fan iscompletely enclosed by fine wire mesh,reducing the risk of an accident.
Greasing Points. A concentrated remotegreasing block on the boom delivers greaseto hard-to-reach locations on the front.
Radiator Compartment. The left rearservice door allows easy access to theengine radiator, oil cooler and air-to-airaftercooler. Reserve tank and drain cockare attached to the radiator for simplifiedmaintenance.
