Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego 20 Annual Report 2003-2004 Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego 1 Annual Report 2003-2004
D E A R F R I E N D S ,
As the Jewish Community Foundation marks its 36th year,
the amount of grants awarded to the community just happened
to be almost $36 million. We asked ourselves, “Was this beshert—
meant to be?”
In those 36 years, the San Diego Jewish community has
experienced tremendous growth and expansion. Working with
families and organizations, the Foundation has awarded
thousands of grants to fund the growth. We have guided people
in leaving legacies for the community. We have worked alongside
community organizations and synagogues in building their programs
and endowments.
With this progress comes more and more challenge. To keep our
community strong and safe, we all need to work together with
wisdom, clarity and imagination.
We invite you to review this annual report and ask yourself how you
can become engaged in the Foundation’s programs. Whether you
enroll your grandchild in the Community Youth Foundation, sign the
Book of Life, open a donor advised fund, or find your own unique
way to become involved—you can join with us in bringing more life
to our community.
Finally, we express our gratitude to the donors, volunteers and
community organizations that partner with us.
B’Shalom,
Marjory Kaplan Andrew ViterbiExecutive Director President

36In 1965, a group of San Diego Jewish leaders gathered at a local restaurant to make a
decision that would impact the community in powerful and far-reaching ways. Recognizing
the value of building a strong future for Jewish San Diego, these visionaries began exploring
the creation of an endowment fund to provide permanent support for vital programs and
services. Two years later, the Jewish Community Foundation was established as one of the
first Jewish organizations of its kind.
Since then, the Foundation has worked to fulfill the dreams of its founders. Passing on
the legacies of those who came before us to help build a brighter future. Ensuring that
our children’s children know what it means to be Jewish and take pride in our traditions.
Guaranteeing a vibrant and secure Jewish life in San Diego now and in the future.

Donor advised funds are individual charitable funds created in your name
for the purpose of fulfilling your philanthropic goals. They allow you to make a
tax-deductible contribution (minimum to establish: $5,000) when it is most
convenient for you and then recommend gifts over time to qualified organiza-
tions in both the Jewish and general communities.
Family Foundations are separate, perpetual nonprofit entities that qualify
as a public charity because of their affiliation with the Jewish Community
Foundation. The foundations are governed by a Board of Directors comprised of
donors and community representatives.
Both vehicles give you the opportunity to solidify family philanthropic values
and improve the community.
“We feel privileged for the opportunities the Foundation offers:
we honor our parents, who raised us on philanthropic values, we give back to the
local community that nourished us and, hopefully,we have a small impact on making the world
a better place.”

Community means sharing resources and building partnerships.
The San Diego Jewish community is fortunate to have a wide
variety of agencies and synagogues that serve many segments
of the community.
While they all have different missions, these organizations share
a common desire to build a strong endowment to protect and
preserve the high quality of their services. Several general
community organizations have also established funds with the
Foundation to meet this goal.

Jewish tradition
teaches that we are

meaningful.
“I established my Lion of Judah Endowment
in honor of my grandmother Anne Ratner’s 90th
year of life. Not only does she serve
as an example to her family about
what giving is, I believe she sets an
example for the entire community,
both secular and Jewish, as to what
philanthropy is. I am inspired by
her. I believe she played a
significant role in exposing my mother to
community giving, and she in turn taught me.
It is a priority for me to teach my children that
they must give to their communities so that they
too can experience the profound satisfaction of
Tikkun Olam.”

We honor the memory of the following individuals. Through their gifts to the Jewish
Community Foundation or United Jewish Federation, they have made a lasting impact on
our community. Their names live on through their tzedakah.
The Book of Life is a promise made by one generation to the next that the Jewish community will be here for them,
for their children, and for their children’s children. By 2004, more than 100 people will have inscribed their names in
the Book of Life. In so doing, they express their belief in and commitment to Jewish values and heritage—ensuring
that our people will survive and flourish. Donors include a personal message, telling a family story or conveying the
experiences that led to the gift.
The Book of Life is proudly displayed at the Jewish Community Foundation. The Book is an ever-growing record of
names and legacies—a true portrait of our community.
Betty and Don Byrnes Book of Life Statement
Both of our families brought the concept of tzedakah to our generation,
and we have passed it on to our children and grandchildren at a very early
age. Not until later did we both realize that tzedakah is a Jewish tradition
and responsibility, not just the right thing to do.
The joy of giving to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate lights up
our lives. We feel proud and fortunate to be able to leave a legacy to help
continue the outstanding work of the San Diego Jewish community.

For the past six years, hundreds of young Jews from all Jewish backgrounds, neighborhoods and families have put the
principles of tzedakah into action. They visit organizations addressing a variety of needs from feeding the homeless to
sending young people to Israel. They discuss and analyze passages of Jewish text. They decide—as a group—how
thousands of dollars should be allocated among a variety of good and compelling causes. Their lessons are numerous,
yet the most profound are those the youth teach us: lessons of consensus, values, and giving as a natural part of life.
