A Gift from the Heart ministry has been a part of Corpus Christi since 1997 and has developed into a wonderful tradition for many of our parishioners. Each year we receive wish lists from approximately 250 families which range from clothing items to toys to a simple request for food for a holiday meal. As we approach the holidays we turn our hearts not only on the goodness of God in our lives, but our call to give that goodness away to others. This community has in the past been most generous in responding to needs placed before us. This year we have added Basic Needs who distributes free diapers to those in need. Cards will be located in the Narthex of the church for you to take and help assure that Christmas will be special for these individuals beginning next weekend. We realize that it may be difficult for some us to shop, but know that if you would like to participate, donations are appreciated for this outreach ministry. The deadline for returning your gift will be December 3rd. We realize this is early, but the organizations need additional time for delivery prior to Christmas. Donations of tissue paper, boxes and scotch tape will also be appreciated. For more information, please contact Angela Loch at [email protected] or 785-843-4084.

Gift from the Heart

There are many fun-filled events planned for these two days and we hope you and your family will be able to participate in our festival! Saturday 9:00 am-12 noon Cookie Walk, Santa’s Workshop, Book Fair 4:00 pm Advent Liturgy Sunday 8:30 am & 10:00 am Advent Liturgies

Cookie WalkThe cookie walk is an elaborate bake sale where buyers select their own personalized assortment from tables laden with specialty items made by parish members. Plan to arrive early to purchase a variety of our delicious cookies and candies. Make your holiday stress free. We would like to have everyone in the parish sign up in the back of the church to donate some kind of cookie or candy. Sign Up sheets will be located in the narthex after liturgies. List your name and the goodies you will provide. Donations should be delivered to the church office on Friday, December 8th between 9-4 pm.

Santa’s Workshop & Book FairSanta’s Workshop is an area where children can purchase presents for their families with the help of Santa’s elves. Items can be purchased from $.25 to $10.00 and can be wrapped and ready to place under the tree! At the Whimsical Winter Wonderland children will be able to purchase books or gift items from our book fair, participate in crafts, and enjoy a visit from Santa.

Feeding The HolidaysFor all of the weeks between now and the New Year, Corpus will be collecting food for the those in need. Our blue Just Food bags will be available during these weeks in the narthex of the church. Everyone is encouraged to pick one up and take it home with them. Then whenever you are making one of your normal or holiday stops at one of our local grocers, please pick up a few extra non-perishables and bring it to church with you on any weekend, or anytime during the week. Our friends at Just Food will be making periodic stops during these next weeks to pick up any food that we have. While traditionally there is plenty of food to go around during the days surrounding Thanksgiving, the other days during this time can be difficult for our local pantries. As children go on their Christmas break, there is more demand as their breakfasts and lunches are not handled by the school district. Both LINK and Just Food see a rise in the numbers of people that they are helping. Our faith community has always been a strong supporter of feeding our neighbors in need. Thanks to all who have and will continue to support this great corporal work of mercy.

Thanksgiving and Christmas LiturgiesOn Thursday, November 23rd our parish liturgy for Thanksgiving will be at 9:00 am. The Christmas liturgies are as follows: Christmas Eve, December 24th at 4:00 pm with the Children’s Choir; at 6:00 pm; and at Midnight with the Adult Choir and English Handbell Choir beginning with lessons and carols at 11:30 pm. On Christmas Day December 25th at 9:00 am. Please plan your schedule now so that you will be able to sign up for liturgical ministry for the liturgy you attend. Thanks.

Science Expo a Big SuccessThe annual Corpus Christi STEM/STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Math) Science Expo was held the evening of Thursday, October 26th. Hundreds of impressive student exhibits were displayed throughout the building. We were happy to have so many parents, family members, and visitors attend the expo this year. This year's expo also featured community partner exhibitors in the fields of STEM and STEAM, who provided hands-on activities and interactions with students and attendees. Guests included KU Chemistry Club, KU Astronomy Alliance and the 4H Rocketry Club.

Fall Band ConcertThe 5th Grade Band and Middle School Band will be performing on Thursday, November 16th at 7:00 pm.

The concert will be held in the gym of the Education Center. Everyone is welcome to come out and support our 5th Grade and

Middle School Saints and enjoy an evening of instrumental music.

5th Grade Middle School Parent Meeting & Visitation DayWe invite all 5th grade parents to attend a meeting on Wednesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm to learn about the wonderful

Middle School education and electives that we have in place at Corpus Christi Parish School. This will provide the opportunity

to meet our staff, tour the facilities, and visit with past students and parents. In addition, 5th grade students will have the

opportunity to shadow a current student, visit the classrooms and meet the teachers on Thursday, November 30th at our Middle

School Visitation Day. We will share the same information about the education, electives, and procedures that we shared at

the parent meeting. This will give 5th graders a chance to experience Middle School first hand. All 5th grade students and

parents are invited to attend these informational meetings. Come see what our middle school is all about!!

Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsIf you know someone who is not yet a member of the Catholic Church and might be interested, do them the favor of inviting them to join us for this session. You might want to attend with them, to renew your own faith and knowledge! We meet on Thursday evenings, 7:00—8:30. Topics: November 16: The Blessed Virgin Mary November 23: No Class—Happy Thanksgiving! November 30: Christian Prayer and Devotion

Family Formation Our Family Formation program combines children’s faith formation and adult faith formation for parents. It is a great way for parents to refresh their faith while experiencing presentations on the same topics as their children. This program is for families whose children attend any of our public/private/home schools, pre-Kn—6th grade. Child care is provided for children younger than 3. Next classes: November 1 & 15. Topic: “I Believe! (The Creed). The Touching Safety program, mandated by our archdiocese, will be offered to children on November 15th during class time.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP & YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

NCYC: Change Can Make a Difference! This month 24 of our High School students will be travelling to Indianapolis, IN for the National Catholic Youth Conference. This is an opportunity that comes around every two years. This is a gathering of nearly 25,000 young people from around the country, and each time they gather it is an awesome sign that the Young Church is alive and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit. There are two easy ways for everyone to help: 1) Take a moment each week and pray for these young people (and all young

people in the parish.)! Including them in prayer is a perfect way for them to know that this is their home. 2) Find all the loose change laying around. Check the couch, the floorboard of your car and the bottom of your purse. Then bring it to church with you and put it in the big jar in the narthex. This is a sure way to know that “your change makes a difference” in our young people’s lives.

Young Adults GroupThe Corpus Christi Young Adults Group is a dynamic, growing group of young professionals, university students, or new young parishioners. Please contact Daniel Hinton for gathering locations each week [email protected] (785-979-2733) Also, please make sure to check our Corpus Christi Catholic Church Facebook page for the most up to date information on group gatherings and meeting times! Please contact Haley at [email protected] for any other questions or if you are interested in joining the group.

Middle School Youth GroupLast week, our middle school youth group helped serve their

Corpus Chris t i commun i ty by helping set up chairs and tables for the 2017 Confirmation class reception. Thank you to all middle school youth group members for your

help! Come join your peers in Middle School youth group on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 pm in the St. Gabriel Room. Come enjoy snacks, catch up with friends, and grow in our faith together! See the schedule for the year online at www.cccparish.org/ middleschool. Our Middle School Youth Group is gaining momentum and growing rapidly! In order to keep the momentum going, we need all parents of Middle School youth group members to please sign up for a date or as many dates as you can through-out the year to assist with chaperoning the youth group. NOTE: If there are not enough parent volunteers signed up for a particular day, Middle School youth group will be cancelled that day so please help by signing up at www.cccparish.org/middleschool.

High School Youth GroupOn Sunday November 12th, School Resource Officer Robinson from the Lawrence Police Department, is coming to our High School youth group meeting to present to our students about internet safety. You do not have to be a youth group member to come to this presentation, all youth are welcome to come listen to gain knowledge and understanding of the precautions our youth should take while using the internet and social media. Also, mark your calendar that there will be no youth group meetings o n N o v e m b e r 19 or November 2 6 t h d u e t o Thanksgiving break and spending time with your family! Keepsake Dedication Program

Now that the mosaic is uncovered it can be enjoyed by all those who visit the parish. Programs from the dedication and blessing of the mosaic can be found on the narthex table. These programs not only contain the mosaic piece, Communion of Saints, and information on its creation and placement in the church, but also history and information o n t h e a r t t h roughou t t he campus of Corpus Christi. This parish community is blessed to be filled with incredible pieces of art and stories that make up this great worship space and campus. Find out about the Stations of the Cross, the hand carved statues in the c h u r c h , t h e incredible iron work and how elements from around Christendom have been incorporated into the campus of Corpus Christi. The art work of Corpus Christi can be found not only in the church, but also in the Education Center and the architecture of the buildings that make up the campus. Please take a copy of this great program home as a keepsake for yourself or for your family.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and with that comes

the question, “what are you thankful for?” Let us allow

ourselves the opportunity to slow down and open our eyes

and hearts to the works of the Holy Spirit. Here at Corpus

Christi Catholic Community, we are surrounded not just by

acts of service, kindness, and fellowship. We are

surrounded by family, a family united in Catholic faith and

nourished by the love of Christ and His teachings.

Last weekend alone, our parishioners came together to donate 1,023lbs of

food to Just Food. They’re the central food distribution facility in Douglas

County that provide food assistance for those in need.

A parish school parent anonymously arranged to have hot cocoa and treats

delivered to our parish school students, faculty, and staff last month on a

particularly chilly afternoon. What a joy it was to see the friendship and cheer

throughout the parish school as students of all grades celebrated together.

After weeks of late night rehearsals and recordings, Corpus Christi Music

Ministry worked together to create an album of eleven tracks set to release in

December. This labor of love is a timeless collection of voice and instrument

that we may look back on and cherish for years to come.

The Communion of Saints mosaic in the narthex was dedicated last month.

Afterward, nearly 400 parishioners and friends gathered together in Holy

Family Hall to celebrate as a community and commemorate the life and faith

of a beloved parishioner.

These examples, among many, serve as a reflection of the Holy Spirit

working within our Corpus Christi Catholic Community in which we are all so

blessed to call Home. Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “love begins at home

and it is not how much we do…but how much love we put into that action.”

May we continue to give, to serve, and to love so that our home, our family

may continue to reflect our sincere gratitude for our many blessings.

Chapel of Remembrance:

Remembering Our OwnNovember is a time when we as a Catholic community pray for and remember all of our loved ones who have died. As we enter into this special time of prayer and reflection, a Chapel of Remembrance has been set up in the area south of the baptismal font. All are

invited to place photos of their deceased loved ones in this area during the month of November. Framed photos may be placed on the table and loose photos may be hung on the magnetic wall board. This collection photos serves as a tangible reminder of the Communion of Saints which binds all of us, living or deceased, into one Church. The Book of the Dead is now in front of the altar. Please take a moment to inscribe the names of the people who meant so much to you in this life. All those listed will be remembered during our liturgies in November.

The 8th grade class will be selling pans of cinnamon rolls to raise money for their class trip to Washington D.C. They will be selling them Sunday, November 19th after the 8 and 10 am masses for $15 a pan. There is nothing better than a warm cinnamon roll for breakfast so please stop by the narthex and support our 8th graders. We would really appreciate your support!
