VETERANS DAY

This Wednesday, November 11th, our country will celebrate Veterans Day to honor those men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. It is a moment to step back and give thanks for our brothers and sisters who served us so that we might enjoy and express the freedom we have as members of a society built on liberty and justice.

November 11th is as the Memorial of St. Martin of Tours; the soldier who discovered the service to our Lord Jesus was much greater than his service to the emperors of this world. St. Martin’s epiphany of service comes as he offers half his cloak to the beggar recognizing the presence of Jesus in the poor as his life is transformed in the conversion of heart and mind. It is the following of God’s call and forming our conscience in prayerful and hope-filled dialogue with God that we are able discover the conversion of our own heart in service of God and his holy Church.

As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “(t)he common good presupposes respect for the person as such…Society should permit each of its members to fulfill his (her) vocation. In particular, the common good resides in the con-ditions for the exercise of the natural freedoms indispensable for the development of the human vocation, such as ‘the right to act according to the sound norm of conscience and to safeguard…privacy, and rightful freedom also in matters of religion.” (1907)

God Bless, Fr. Mark

Next weekend November 14-15 St Lucy Welcomes Fr. Jerry Hackenmueller from UnBound Ministry to our Parish. In his 2009 World Day of Peace address, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said, "What the fight against poverty really needs are men and women who live in a profoundly fraternal way and are able to accompany individuals, families and communities on journeys of authentic human development."

For almost 30 years, Unbound has brought hope to these individuals, families and communities living in poverty in the 20 countries where we work. Founded in 1981 by lay Catholics acting on the Gospel call to serve the poor, we have grown into a movement of more than 250,000 sponsors supporting more than

300,000 children, youth and aging individuals around the world.

Father Jerry Hackenmueller has been a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis Minn., since 1969. Throughout most of his priesthood he has served as a pastor, mostly at parishes in his home diocese but also, for 11 years, in Venezuela. He especially values his time in Latin America and his work with Spanish-speaking communities in Minnesota. As one of Unbound’s bilingual priests, Father Hackenmueller brings a much-valued skill to his preaching min-istry. For more information about Unbound Ministry please visit their webpage at www.unbound.org.
