It was a year ago now when God first opened my eyes me to see the awe-
someness of this Hilton community. We were so excited: a new family, in
our new call, in a new home, with new schools, and new friends. You wel-
comed us in love. And showing us around, inviting us in, sharing your sto-
ries, and so light upon all you do in witness to Christ, we found here bless-
ings of God upon blessings of God upon blessings of God... I never thought
to expect so much, but I could have. The bounty is rich and every day yet is
a new discovery!
Summer has been a joy, and our family is truly blessed. I thank God for
vacations, museums, fitness pals and bicycles, good neighbors and new
neighbors, vegetable gardens, Busch Gardens and Water Country. I give
thanks for two sons and a daughter who play hard and grow a little more each day. I give thanks
for Donna, for her love and for all the good God brings through her. I give thanks for this church
who aimed to slow down in June, July and August, as is her custom, but then kept herself quite
busy, with youth trips, mission and service projects downtown, strategic planning for our future
and special music each Sunday.
Now we move into fall. Hang on for all the blessings to come! Here are just a few:
Rally Day is September 13. We resume our regular hours with Sunday School at 9:15 and
worship at 10:30. Thanks to all our teachers new and old (we’ve a special blessing waiting
for you teachers that morning in worship, so be ready)! See the enclosed brochure for a
listing of all our Sunday School offerings. There’s something for everyone! Secondly, we
have our pancake lunch to benefit LINK, and with collection boxes ready for our dona-
tion of items for PORT, the homeless shelter ministry. Thirdly, following lunch, we have a
special event hosted by our Facilities Improvement Steering Committee. We’re looking
to harvest our best ideas. Does our building need a makeover? What does our church
need for faithful witness today? We need to hear from you, and yes…dreaming big is
strongly encouraged! So all aboard! It’s all day for Rally Day!
Music rehearsals resume this month for Junior Jam, Bell Choir, Ensemble and Choir! Hooray!
Make a joyful sound to the Lord!
Plans are underway for chances to get to know our sisters and brothers at Carver Memorial
Presbyterian Church! Tentative schedule includes a picnic at Deer Park on Sat, Oct. 3,
and a pulpit/choir exchange in November.
On Nov. 1, we welcome to our pulpit the Rev. Berthe Nzeba, minister of our sister church
Brikin in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo!
These are but a few glad tidings this fall! The season is already shaping up here at Hilton Presby-
terian Church, and I’m loving it. I’m loving how God is calling us all to taste and see just how good
the Lord is here. I’m loving the look of expectation I’m finding in you now and each week as our
new church season begins. Thank you, God, for your blessings upon us! Now pour your love and
Spirit and power upon us. Help us be your church in Jesus’ name!
All Aboard!

Worship Time for August 30 Is 3:00 pm
Come enjoy a wonderful afternoon at HPC! Following worship we will
play games, help make new decorations for the corners of the sanctuary.
Then at 5 pm. will have submarine sandwiches, sides, drinks, and cookies.
Sign up in the narthex or call the church office regarding the meal.
Church Work Day
September 19 / 9:00 am-Noon
Yes, once again, it’s time to mark the date on your calendar
for the "Church Clean-Up and Pizza Extravaganza." In the
true Property Committee fashion, pizza, served grab and
growl style, will await all earnest workers who join us to labor
together to tidy up/fix up the church and grounds. Crumbs
will be thrown to/at (depending on our Christian charity) late
arrivals, and empty pizza boxes will be on display for those
who don’t show up at all. Because we need to know how many pizzas to order, you’ll
find a sign-up sheet in the Narthex for you to officially an-
nounce your intention to work, dive into some pizza, and so-
cialize after the work is done. We worked middlin’ hard, con-
sumed a lot of pizza, and beautified our church at our spring
work session, and we want to have the same good results at
the fall session.
Events happening throughout the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia can be found at www.pcusa-peva.org/
Hilton Area Blood Drive
Tuesday September 15 / 1:30-6:00 pm
Hilton Baptist Church
At this drive, you can give blood OR donate double red cells.
Blood donations may be given every 56 days. A Double Red
donation collects the red cells, but returns most of the plasma
and platelets to the donor. Double Red donors must have
type A negative, B negative or type O blood and meet certain
weight requirements. Also, donations for Double Red Cells
may be given every 112 days.
If you cannot donate blood, consider providing snacks for
donors. Cookies, brownies, fruit, or sandwich halves are ap-
preciated. See the sign-up sheet in the Narthex or call or e-
mail Wanda Fletcher at 249-0122 or [email protected] to
sign up for supplying a snack for the generous blood donors.
For appointments, you may use this link:
http://www.redcrossblood.org/rcbmobile/drive/
chooseDonationTime.jsp
You don’t need a special reason to give blood.
You just need your own reason.
Some donate in honor of a loved one.
Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend.
Some know that a family member or a friend might need
blood someday. Some believe it is the right thing to do.
Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contri-
bution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply.
And, you’ll feel good knowing you've helped change a life.
Thank you,
Wanda Fletcher, HPC Coordinator

recent death of her daughter, Cynthia Diane Matthews Beckinger.

pm worship this Sunday. All teachers and those who are interested
in teaching please meet in the front of the sanctuary.

activities resume. Time and date TBD.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SERVE COMMUNION? If you are an
elder not currently serving on session, the worship committee in-
vites you to be on the schedule of communion servers. According
to the Book of Order any member, with approval from session, may
serve communion, too. Do you feel called to serve in this way? If
so, please contact Kathryn Dabbs.
YOU ARE INVITED to come to a "Vision and Architecture" event
on Rally Day Sunday, September 13 to take part in discussing and
planning improvements to the church. It's been years (decades?)
since we updated the facility, and during that time we have changed
how we worship a bit. Between those changes and normal aging,
the building could use a face lift. So the Session has formed a com-
mittee to work with an architect to figure what we can and should
do. It is an exciting project, and the first time in years that we can
contemplate such a thing.
The meeting on Rally Day is for the whole congregation, and is a
forum for suggesting ideas and discussing priorities. It will follow the
Pancake Brunch right after the Sunday morning service. Coordina-
tors include Pax Goodson, Francie Pearce, George Barber, Debby
Heatwole and Melissa Goodson. We hope to see you there!

Meet the New Campus Minister
The Rev. Dr. Donna DeSarro-Raynal (Clark’s wife!) is the
new Campus Minister of United Campus Ministries
(UCM) at Christopher Newport University. The vision
of UCM is to be a bold spiritual presence on the CNU cam-
pus, providing a place, a minister and an opportunity to study,
worship and serve God in an atmosphere of positive, accepting
Christian love. Students come together to share their faith
through discussion and weekly fellowship, offer support of
the campus community through various events and activi-
ties, provide students with information to connect with local churches,
and serve the wider community through a number of mission and outreach
efforts throughout each academic year. Donna and all who participate in
UCM appreciate your prayers and support of its ministry!
Congratulations
(L) Doris Slagle is celebrating 16 years as our organist. (R) Sarah McGinnis is celebrating 10 years as our office manager.
Let’s Get Started!
This summer has truly been a journey for me, starting with surgery
and the slow immersion back into normal life from that. In July, I
got to take my first trip to the great state of Texas while attending
“Pinnacle” an event put on by the Handbell Musicians of America
for advanced ringers and directors. While I’ve been doing this for
24 years now, there is always something new to learn and new
people with which to connect. We’ll be applying some principals of
tai chi to handbell ringing this year as a result of this conference.
I also made my yearly trek up Rt. 13 to the conference at VA Wes-
leyan College. I found lots of new choir music while I was there
and the Adult Choir will see many of these titles this fall. Just this
past weekend I attended for the first time, the HMA Director’s
Seminar. One of the greatest handbell composers and directors,
Dr. William Payn, was the leading clinician. It has been 15 years
since I was last able to study with him and I jumped at the oppor-
tunity to do so while he was in Chesapeake. I conducted in four
different classes this summer, hopefully you’ll notice some changes
for the better : ).
All of our music ensembles have experienced growth over the past
year with the installation of our new pastor, Clark. He and his
family have brought new life to our church in many ways, including
the music program. Hilton’s music program has a variety of oppor-
tunities for people of all ages to be a part of Worship +2. Won’t
you join us? Check out the schedule found in this issue of the
newsletter and in the brochure in your pews. Two items of note
are a new configuration for Junior and Youth Jams with Junior Jam
being for K -2 grades and Youth Jam being for 3 – 8 grades; and a
special program this December of Christmas Choral Classics by
the Adult Choir. We’ll be looking for some extra voices to really
make this one soar! Adult Choir begins tonight,
August 26, at 6:30 in the choir room.

Music Director

Dear HPC Members:
Your thoughtfulness and prayer support is greatly appreciated with the recent death

have such a loving, caring, neighbor, friend (Ann Hurt) who reassures me of your
church support.
Feeling blessed,
Nancy Scott

Thank you so much for the surprise recognition of my "Sweet Sixteenth" anniver-
