The Thirty Fourth NJASA/NJAPSA Annual Spring Leadership Conference will address school leadership, the latest educational developments and best practices to help you maintain a professional and personal balance in your life. You will be choosing from an impressive selection of sessions designed to help you acquire the tools you need in your role as education leader in your community. For many New Jersey school leaders, this conference is THE professional development and networking event of the year.

The NJASA Allied Member Display Areas are an integral part of the conference offering both new and time-tested products and services to help you and your district work more effectively. This is the perfect opportunity to acquaint you with the latest tools and best resources available in education.

*SPECIAL NOTE: The waiver request for overnight lodg-ing (2 nights) was APPROVED by the Commissioner of Education. As a result of this waiver, School Districts will be able to reimburse attendees for overnight lodging on Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12, 2016. Reimbursement for registration fees, mileage and meals, are subject to the limitations and conditions set forth by your board and the travel regulations set forth by the NJDOE.

Caesars Atlantic City is the official host hotel for the 2016 NJASA/NJAPSA Annual Spring Leadership Conference. It is the responsibility of all attendees and exhibitors going to the conference to make their own hotel arrangements directly with Caesars. Reservations made after the cut-off date or once the room block is full will not be eligible for the special rates. 2016 NJASA/NJAPSA Spring Leadership Conference attendees will receive the special rate of $100 per room, per night in the Centurion Tower (single or double occupancy). Keynote Speaker: Ari Ne’eman

Ari Ne’eman is the President and co-founder of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, an advocacy organization run by and for Autistic adults seeking to increase the representation of Autistic people across society. In 2009, President Obama nominated Ari to the National Council on Disability, a federal agency charged with advising Congress and the President on disability policy issues. He

was confirmed by the Senate in July 2010 and currently chairs the Council’s Entitlements Committee. From 2010 to 2012, he served as a public member to the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, a Federal advisory committee that coordinates all efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services concerning autism. Ari also served as an adviser to the DSM-5 Neurodevelopmental Disorders Workgroup convened by the American Psychiatric Association. He is also a member of the National Quality Forum’s Workgroup on Measuring Home and Community Based Services Quality.

Ari was recently appointed by Secretary of Labor Tom Perez to serve as a member of the Department of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Increasing Competitive Integrated Employment of People with Disabilities. He previously served as Vice Chair of the New Jersey Adults with Autism Task Force, where he represented autistic adults in reviewing the state’s autism services. He also previously served on the New Jersey Special Education Review Commission, where he authored a minority report on the topic of aversives, restraint and seclusion. He is also a board member of the American Association of People with Disabilities. In addition, he was named by the New York Jewish Week as one of their “36 by 36” in 2010. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where he studied political science in the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Pedro Noguera

Dr. Pedro Noguera is the Distinguished Professor of Education at the Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences at UCLA. Prior to joining the faculty at UCLA he served as a tenured professor and holder of endowed chairs at New York University (2003 – 2015) Harvard University (2000 – 2003) and the University of California, Berkeley (1990 – 2000). He is the author of eleven books and over 200 articles and

monographs. He serves on the boards of numerous national and local organizations and appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and other national news outlets. His most recent books are “Excellence Through Equity” (Corwin 2015) with Alan Blankstein, “School for Resilience: Improving the Life Trajectory of African American and Latino Boys” with E. Fergus and M. Martin (Harvard Education Press 2014), and “Creating the Opportunity to Learn” with A. Wade Boykin (ASCD, 2011). Dr. Noguera appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and other national news outlets. From 2009 - 2012 he served as a Trustee for the State University of New York (SUNY) as an appointee of the Governor. He serves on the boards of numerous national and local organizations including the Economic Policy Institute, the Young Women’s Leadership Institute, The After School Corporation and The Nation Magazine. In 2013, he was

appointed to the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and in 2014, he was appointed to the National Academy of Education. Noguera recently received awards from the Center for the Advanced Study of the Behavioral Sciences/Sage for outstanding achievement in advancing the understanding of the behavioral and social sciences as they are applied to pressing social issues, the National Association of Secondary Principals for distinguished service to the field of education, and from the McSilver Institute at NYU for his research and advocacy efforts aimed at fighting poverty.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ernest Morrell

Dr. Ernest Morrell. is the Macy Professor of English Education and Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers College, Columbia University. Ernest is also past-president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and an appointed member of International Literacy Association’s Literacy Research Panel.

Ernest was an award-winning English teacher and coach in Northern California and he now works with teachers and schools across the country to infuse social and emotional learning, digital technologies, project-based learning, and multicultural literature into standards-based literacy curricula and after-school programs. Ernest is the

author of more than 70 articles and book chapters, and eight books including “Every Child a Super Reader” (Scholastic, 2016), “New Directions in Teaching English, Linking Literacy and Popular Culture and Critical Media Pedagogy: Teaching for Achievement in City Schools”, which was awarded Outstanding Academic Title for 2014 by Choice Magazine of the American Library Association. Ernest has earned numerous commendations for his university teaching including UCLA’s Department of Education’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Morrell earned his Ph.D. in Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of California at Berkeley where he received the Outstanding Dissertation Award.
