Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to re-solving the problems of society. (Pope Francis, 5/24/15, Laudato Si’, no. 91) Pope Francis calls us to a “sincere love of our fellow human beings” echoing the teaching of Jesus we hear in today’s Gospel-that we love, bless, pray for all people, not simply those who love us. We are called to Care for the people of God’s Creation … choosing always to resolve problems with love.
—TerraCycle, sponsor of the recycling program that St. Tho-
mas parishioners’ have been participating in, is collaborating
with several of the world’s largest consumer organizations to
resolve society’s problem of plastic pollution by rethink-
ing how we recycle. Called Loop, this innovative project
is based on the concept that companies are selling a prod-
uct; but should continue to own the container in which the
product is sold. With Loop, consumers will buy the product,
pay a deposit for the container and later drop the container
when finished into a Loop bin which will be picked up by
Loop at the consumer’s home. The deposit will be returned
if the product is not purchased again. It’s an idea as old as
home delivery of bottled milk, just updated for today’s
packaging. To read more about Loop, go to the full article
on the parish website.

From the New York State Catholic Conference:
—In January the "Abortion Expansion" bill and the Child Victims Act bill passed. Go to www.nyscatholic.org and “Take Action” to express your thoughts to your Legislators at the passage of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA); there is also a Petition to Repeal the Abortion Law and to send an email to the Governor and your Legislators about the Physi-cian’s Assisted Suicide bills.
—The Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act would ad-dress a number of the exemptions in New York’s labor, pub-lic health and workers’ compensation laws that currently prevent farmworkers from accessing rights and privileges available to other workers. Farmworkers have been ex-cluded from many laws that provide protections such as overtime pay, employer contributions to unemployment and workers compensation funds and public health protections including sanitation and housing standards. The bill would also grant them collective bargaining rights and require that farmworkers be given a 24 hour day of rest in every calen-dar week. The New York State Catholic Conference sup-ports this bill.
—The Halt Solitary Confinement Act would limit the time an inmate can spend in segregated confinement. This act would end the segregation of vulnerable people, improve the conditions of confinement and create more humane and effective alternatives to such confinement. The New York State Catholic Conference supports this bill.
On the Federal side:
—Bread for the World urges us to call our senators and representative at 800-826-3688 or write them to pass legis-lation that will accelerate progress on global nutrition. See a sample letter or send a personalized email at www.bread.org/activist.
