Backyard Vacation

Over the past two decades, Arnold Builders has had the opportunity to include many pool projects with our custom homes. Many people wonder if a pool will add val-

ue to their home, which can be a difficult question to answer. The reason for this is because “value” is not based solely on money, but also on the time spent sharing life’s most precious moments. Therefore, if making your home the desired hangout for your fam-ily and friends is your goal, a pool just might be your answer.

Pool placement is permanent and a well thought out placement plan is important for maximum enjoyment. The placement of the pool will first depend on the size of the property on which the pool will be built. In Cen-tral Texas it is always important when building on prop-erty with an existing home to consider the pool should not be placed over electrical wires, sewer lines and septic systems, or buried pipes, as they would not be accessible for repairs.

There are a variety of pools available to suit your fam-ily’s needs. The size and shape of pool that you choose to buy will depend on the size of the property, which will be using the pool, and your budget. Families with older children may want a larger, deeper pool for div-

ing or flat area for water vol-leyball as opposed to adults who enjoy entertaining in an outdoor retreat may only de-sire a smaller shallower pool.

There are many options to consider when choosing which materials to choose. A beautiful tile pool with the am-biance of the French Riviera, A Quartz or similar product that ads a sparkle,an exposed Ag-gregate finish,or give your pool the look and feel of a pebble bottom stream are just a few choices.

Then consider the many color choices! With new technology in pumps, lighting, water fea-tures and pool materials it can be confusing to make choic-es. Spend time researching on line to form a wish list. Decide on styles that compliment your lifestyle. Set an appointment to meet with Arnold Builders to form a plan to make the backyard vacation a reality.

InstallationFrom the original site visit to determine the best loca-tion, to the finished product, an entire pool project can take 30 to 90 days. This time line is affected by the simplicity of the pool to the complexity of all the additional features like landscaping, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and living areas. There is NEVER too much time spent considering the proper location and future plans for the rest of your yard. You don’t want to discover in 5 to 10 years that you should’ve chosen a different placement for your pool.

9

Increase your pool enjoyment with these accessories items: Diving board, slide, fire feature, waterfall fea-tures, heat, spa, lighting, landscape, outdoor kitchen, If you desire to make an investment in your family that won’t depreciate over time, but will increase quality moments for years to come, then a pool is a great op-tion. In addition to pools, we have designed and con-structed many outdoor kitchens, fire pits, living areas, and casitas. Our goal in any of these situations is to seamlessly integrate the new addition as though it was part of the original structure.

Outdoor Entertaining Areas are a Must in Central Texas. Do you remember the metal painted chairs that rocked as you drank your Dr. Pepper with the

neighbors? What about block party barbeques? Outdoor Entertaining has always been a favorite past time for Texans. Central Texas patios have evolved over the years. They are no longer just a slab of concrete and a charcoal grill. Home de-sign and living spaces have expanded into the great outdoors. With the use of natural stones, exposed wood and distinctive ceiling treat-ments, local builders can create an outdoor space that is architecturally stunning.

The three key spaces for an outdoor entertain-ing area are:

The Dining Space needs to have room for a ta-ble large enough for a Texas size meal. From a candle light dinner party or a soccer team, it is always a good idea to have on hand extra fold-ing tables that can be covered and decorated to give guests plenty of room then stored away when not in use. The Outdoor Kitchen Pre-dictably, that mainstay of outdoor entertaining, the outdoor grill, is “bigger and better,” The Summer Kitchen can be just the basics with a grill, refriger-ator and sink. Or, if space and budget allow, you can have a full-blown kitchen with extras like a

bar for serving, warming drawers, wine cooler, ice maker, pizza oven, a “kegarator” , or even a hibachi grill. They all can be built-ins or like the hibachi grill portable for the fall tail gate parties. Bugs can be a challenge to outdoor living in Tex-as. We are now seeing retractable screens that can be raised and lowered automatically.

The Living Space An outdoor living space with a wood-burning fireplace or fire pit that warms a seating area with benches or couches, music from IPOD docking station, and a television creates a space that families can use outdoors from March to November in Central Texas. Weather friendly fab-rics have come along way. Recycled polypropylene rugs, drapes, and a large selection of weather proof fab-ric designs can be found locally. Ceil-ingfans, misters, and the newest trend is controlled air-conditioning systems to ease the Texas heat.

This simple lemony sauce shows off both the briny shrimp and the sweet summer squash. For an easy side dish, brush slices of rustic bread with olive oil, then grill them alongside the shrimp and squash until golden grill marks form. Top with chopped fresh tomatoes and basil.

2 tsp. Dijon mustardGrated zest of 1 lemon2Tbs. Fresh lemon juice1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing1 small Serrano chili, seeded & minced1tsp minced fresh marjoram1 tbs minced fresh basil Coarse Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper1¼ lb. Colossal shrimp, peeled and deveined with tails intact8 summer squash, cut lengthwise into 3 pieces eachSoak bamboo skewers in water to cover for 30 minutes. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a grill.

Put the mustard in a small bowl. Add the lemon zest and lemon juice and mix well. Gradually whisk in the 1/3 cup olive oil, then mix in the chili, marjoram and basil. Season the sauce with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Drain the skewers. Thread about 4 of the shrimp on a skewer and then thread a second skewer through the shrimp, parallel to the first, to prevent the shrimp from spinning around on the skewers. Repeat with the re-maining shrimp. Place the squash and shrimp on a large baking sheet. Brush the shrimp and squash with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange the squash on the grill, cover the grill and cook, turning once, until tender and lightly charred, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Place the shrimp on the grill and cook, uncovered, turning once, until just cooked through, about 4 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp from the skewers and cut the squash crosswise.

Transfer the shrimp and squash to a bowl and toss with the lemon-herb sauce. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4.

THE MEXICAN MARTINISome like to refer to this drink recipe as a Mar-garitini or Austin Margarita, but please note that the real secret of a Mexican martini is to squeeze fresh juice and refuse to use a mix! Which tequila to use is a personal preference. Recommended is a good Reposado like Sauza Hornitos, Caza-dores, Patron, or Herradura.

2 oz. Tequila of your choice. 1 1/2 oz. Cointreau Orange Liqueur1 1/2 oz. FRESH Lime Juice1 oz. Orange JuiceSplash of Sprite or 7-UpNo cheap drink mixes!1 splash olive juice to make it authentic and to dirty it up

Shake ingredients with ice and pour into a salt-ed martini glass. Garnish with a jalepeno stuffed olive. Add a sliver of jalepeno if you like a little heat!

Places to see

Throughout the 20th century, historic Pleasure Piers became America’s centerpiece for pre-eminent entertainment and family amusement. Chicago’s Navy Pier, Santa Monica Pier, Coney

Island’s Luna Park and Galveston’s Pleasure Pier rou-tinely drew record crowds and headliner entertain-ers. Originally, municipalities built most of these iconic piers for utility functions; the original Santa Monica Pier opened in 1909 to carry sewer pipes beyond the ocean’s breakers. But entrepre-neurs with vision transformed these massive steel and concrete over-water platforms into Pleasure Piers, and tourism soared to new highs as a result.

Originally built in the late 1940s as a recreational facility for the military, the Galveston Pier was turned over to the city after World War II and named Pleasure Pier. The Pleasure Pier operated as an iconic fam-ily destination until 1961 when Hurricane Carla dam-aged the property. In 1965, the Flagship Hotel opened on the site and was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Pleasure Pier - In Galveston, Landry’s has restored the 25th Street and Seawall Boulevard pier to its mag-nificent roots as a preeminent historic Pleasure Pier. Landry’s has unveiled the world-class amusement park for all ages, a grand destination venue reminiscent of the City Beautiful Movement’s style, purpose and ef-fect. The new Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier brings a new standard of waterfront fun to the Gulf

Coast offering family attractions, with rides, games of chance and skill, entertainment, great food ven-ues and retail shops. The Texas-sized Pier developed by Tilman Fertitta, sole owner, chairman and CEO of Landry’s, is 120 feet-wide and 1,130 feet-long. The Pier thrusts boldly into the Gulf of Mexico from 25th Street at the famous Galveston Seawall, welcoming guests for dining, rides, games and entertainment through-out the year. Rides from thrilling to gentle line the long

Pier perimeter, creating an excit-ing sensation of being suspended above the water.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at Plea-sure Pier -Texas’ first Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is now open and fea-tures delectable seafood dining. Its food-to-go option, Gump on the Run, is located alongside. Recognized for outstanding sea-food, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. makes shrimp the star, offering 19

different preparations. The menu also offers an excit-ing variety of fish entrees, crisp salads, fun children’s meals, creative desserts and award winning ribs. The Pier also offers several quick service food and bev-erage options for choices such as hamburgers, hot dogs, corndogs, sausage on a stick, chicken fingers, cotton candy, pretzels, pizza and much more. The popular concept captures the charm and American spirit that made Paramount Pictures’ “Forrest Gump” a smash hit featuring a down-home atmosphere remi-niscent of the movie’s setting in Alabama. Today, Bub-ba Gump Shrimp Co. remains the first and only theme restaurant chain based on a motion picture property.

Local Artist Michael Carubelli was raised in Killeen. He has always taken pride in being rooted in Texas Country Music. His unique voice and song writing has won Micheal and his drum-mer John Hull quite a large following in Central Texas. Micheal for a second year pulled other local bands and businesses together to support The Keep A Breast Foundation. The

Keep A Breast Foundation™ is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to help eradi-cate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support. Through art events, educational programs and fundraising efforts, they seek to increase breast cancer awareness among young people so they are better equipped to make choices and develop habits that will benefit their long-term health and well-being. Schoepf’s Barbeque hosted the event. The Rustic Redhead in Downtown Belton held a special one day in store event with discounts, free margaritas and spray tanning to draw people out to support. Five live bands donated their talent and came out to support the Keep A Breast Foundation.

Wes Perryman Is a farmer from Moody ,Texas. He is married with a beautiful wife and two daugh-ters. His music is American folk with a sound similar to Woody Guthrie. Wes plays Guitar and Har-monica. He sings from his life experience and enjoys writing songs in his free time.

Hedley Grange pulls its name from a former poorhouse turned recording studio in Headley, England UK. Bands like Led Zep-pelin, Peter Frampton, and Bad Company all recorded there in the 1960’s and 70’s. With a name rich in rock and roll history, you know you’re in for a loud, rocking show. “We want you to feel like part of our family and drift away with us for a couple hours of good ‘ol rock and roll.”

All you have to do is listen to the words of their songs to know the story of Wally West & Them Lostbound Souls. A brand of music that worries less on social pretense and more on the true stories lived by the band and what they see in the world around them. West connects with his audiences in an almost infectious manner, sharing sharp witted anecdotes, and providing a window of truth into his world. You can expect the band to give you everything they got, and then some, no matter what stage you find them on.

From the moment that 7 Years Today opens their live show it is clear they are a musical force to be reckoned with. Part rock and roll swagger, part wistful country, this band pulls no punches in letting you know their songs come from the stoic determi-nation five musicians have to create music much akin to the great albums of the past. All in all, the band’s goal is to get the listener back to that time when music was everything important in the world…because they still believe it is! 7 Years Today is endorsed as an Anheuser-Busch Shock Top True Music Band through Jack Hilliard Distributing, Temple, TX.

4T HOFJULYBelton’s

celebrationsThe 4th of July in Belton, Texas is a tradition that

means shared memories and a little something different to nearly everybody. Some may re-

member sitting in grandpa’s lap watching floats pass by, or eating a turkey leg by Nolan Creek or even sneaking a first kiss at the Rodeo. Whatever it may be is the reason that the Belton Chamber keeps the tradition alive. Whether you are 16 or 61, it is never too late to make Belton’s 4th of July a tradition. To set the tone for the celebra-tion is the Kick-Off BBQ in Yet-tie Polk Park. People from the community gather together and enjoy a delicious meal under the shade trees with live music playing in the back-ground.Of course it wouldn’t be a 4th of July without a parade. Al-ways starting promptly at 10 a.m., the floats, bands, antique cars, decorated bicycles and other unique entries make their way down Main Street. The first parade was held in 1850 with groups and organizations marching patriotically through down-town and became an annual event in 1919. From its humble beginnings, the parade now draws over 30,000 spectators, is broadcasted live on television, streamed instantly on the internet and has become

a social media savvy event. Staying true to its roots, the parade continues to draw families back year after year. The parade’s long-lasting heritage has not gone un-noticed by both local and national media. In 2008, USA Today named Belton’s 4th of July Parade as one of the nation’s “Top Ten Places to Fly Your Flag

on the 4th.”Following the end of the pa-rade, attendees make their way down to Nolan Creek for a festival complete with arts & crafts activities, water slides and a variety of local favorite foods. Although it may be warm, there is al-ways a vendor that sells fresh squeezed lemonade or homemade sweet tea to help you cool off.Belton’s 4th of July is rich in history and memories and of

course lots of fun. As if a parade, festival and BBQ aren’t enough for a celebration, the Bell County Expo Center hosts three nights of PRCA rodeo.Whether you are looking to start a new tradition, bring back old memories or see what all the buzz is about, the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Celebration and PRCA has something to offer you.

Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights opened it’s doors with a huge com-munity celebration that lasted for days. A local priest blessed the hospital with Holy water on Thursday June 7, 2012. Matt Maxfield CEO of Seton Medical Cen-ter welcomed all local physicians, leadership, staff, local artists, and community leaders in a ribbon cutting followed by wonderful cuisine from the Range of Salado. Confetti Rentals of Harker Heights provided luxury linens to highlight the special day. The local cornerstones given at the groundbreaking by local cities were all enclosed into individual glass squares in the floor of the lobby under-neath beautiful water wall features. The Saturday events were a free festival style celebration for all residents to tour the new hospital and enjoy great family fun activities.

The $97 million facility was constructed in partnership with the Seton Family of Hospitals, Austin, Texas. LHP and Seton forged their 80/20 joint-venture deal in December 2010, and construction began the following quarter. It has all private rooms, EHR capabilities, a helipad and a 60,000 square foot medical pavilion ad-jacent to the hospital.

Pat Baul of LHP noted that two doctors groups approached LHP and Seton about two years ago, following Scott & White’s purchase of nearby King’s Daughters Hospi-tal, Temple, Texas. The healthcare system employs all its physicians, and according to Baul, the doctors groups wanted to remain independent. In a news release, LHP CEO Dan Moen called the new medical center “a true grassroots success story, as lo-cal physicians sensed the pressing need for choice and excellence in healthcare.”

With the arrival of summer, it is time to head over to the store and pick up a new tube of sunscreen. According to the Amer-ican Cancer Society, more than 1 million skin cancers diag-nosed each year in the U.S. are considered sun-related. That means it’s important to have a good sunscreen. There are so many types of Sunscreens to choose from.

Should you choose lotion or spray? The FDA is currently investigating spray-on sunscreens and whether inhaling the spray poses a danger. Until more is known, Consumer Reports says it’s best to avoid using sprays on chil-dren. And never spray directly onto your face. Instead spray into your hands and rub the sunscreen onto your face.

Should you choose Name brand or Generic brand? Consumer Reports also performed a new critical wavelength test mandated by the FDA that deter-mines whether the sunscreen offers a sufficient level of UVA protection. Two products that claim both UVA and UVB protection failed this test: Banana Boat Kids and Alba Botanica. Consumer Re-ports did find two very good, inexpensive sun-screens: No-Ad SPF 45, Walgreen’s Continuous Spray Sunscreen Sport SPF 50. It is a great idea to go online and check reports about your favorite sunscreen.

Which SPF is the right one? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The higher the SPF number, the better protec-tion against the sun’s harmful UVB rays. The SPF number lets you know how much longer you can stay out of the sun without burning. For example, if it takes 15 minutes for a person to burn, an SPF 15 will allow them to stay out in the sun 15 times longer without burning. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing an SPF of 15 or higher for maximum protection. SPF is available in levels from 2 to 60. Does highest mean the best protection? Not necessarily. An SPF of 50 only provides 1% to 2% more protection than an SPF 30

Waterproof vs. Water Resistant“Waterproof” sunscreen should provide protection in the water for 80 minutes, while

“water resistant” provides only 40 minutes of protection

Do Children need a special sunscreen? There are many brands designed for children however, they are really not that much different from those that are made for adults. You do not really have to buy a separate sunscreen just for your kids. Hypoallergenic and fragrance free are especially important if your child has sensitive skin.

Spray TanSpray Tans are a great safe way to appear tan but remember it is only a temporary color and the skin can burn when outdoors without Sunscreen.

How They TestSunscreens are tested to see how well the sunscreens protect against two types of radiation: UVB, which causes sunburn, and UVA, which penetrates deeper,

resulting in tanning and aging of the skin. Both types contribute to skin cancer, so it’s important to use a sunscreen that protects against both. To test, sunscreen is applied to panelists’ backs, then ex-posed them to either UVA or UVB rays. Testers also check water resistance. Panelists sit in water for up to 80 minutes depending on the product’s claims.

HERE COMES THE SUN!!

TIPS FOR APPLYING SUNSCREEN•Put the lotion on 15 to 30 minutes before go-ing outdoors. This gives the sunscreen enough time to be absorbed into your skin and offer you ultimate protection.

•Squeeze out an ounce — the amount to al-most fill a shot glass. Coat the body in a thin, even layer.

•Apply it all over. Make surer legs and back of legs, ears,

scalp, and upper back are covered.

•Be gentle to your face. It’s fine to use the same product you use for your body, but

if your face is prone to breakouts, invest in a sunscreen specially formulated to

prevent blemishes.

•Reapply every two hours or every 30 minutes if you’re doing something active.
