Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

The research field is mainly divided in two maincategories: the first is related to automotive applicationswhile the second one is related to renewable energies andtheir integration in power systems. For the first point, the innovation in automotive are drivenby developing of electric propulsion and storage systems. In this scenario the research is mainly focused in: i)studying, designing and modelling innovative powerconverters for traction drives and onboard electricactuators; ii) studying and modelling of storage systemsoptimizing their use for transportation. For the second point, nowadays, converter-interfacedpower sources (which include also electrical energystorage devices) are spreading throughout the powergrids (at high, medium, and low voltage levels). Moreover, electrical drives are increasingly gaining importance, alsobecause they foster energy efficiency. In this context, some of the major objectives of theresearch activity are: (i) the modelling of static electricalenergy conversion devices; (ii) the modelling ofelectromechanical devices (e.g., rotating machines, switches); (iii) the design of innovative control strategiesto optimally exploit renewable sources, storagecapabilities, and to improve load behaviour and dynamicresponses; (iv) the design of optimal managementstrategies of the various resources making up micro-gridsor portion of a power systems.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

Interdisciplinary PhD Grant The PhD research will be carried out in collaboration withresearch groups of the PhD programme in "Modelli eMetodi Matematici per l'ingegneria / Mathematical Modelsand Methods in Engineering".See http://www.dottorato.polimi.it/index.php?id=242&L=1for further information.

With a growing number of installations of renewableelectric energy sources and their long distances to thecenters of electric power consumption, the use of HVDCelectric power transmission becomes mandatory. TheHVDC technology reduces the power loss in long distanceelectric energy transport in comparison to high voltagealternating current systems.Modern HVDC cable systems feature polymeric insulationmaterials, which have good electrical characteristics. Adisadvantage of these insulating materials is the possibleaccumulation of electric space charges which may resultin increased local field stresses. These can possiblydamage the insulation material and result in a failure ofthe HVDC cable transmission system. This research project focusses on the development ofsimulation models for electric field, electric charge andtemperature distribution in HVDC insulation materials innon-stationary conditions. The development of thisnumerical model is challenging because it must be able toaccurately describe different time scale phenomena,

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

In order to develop a numerical simulation tool capable ofhandling the industrial relevant problem at hand it iscrucial to combine knowledge of the thermo-electromagnetic problem under investigation, of therequirements dictated by the engineering application andof the most advanced scientific computing methodologies.

Educational objectives

The PhD student will become familiar with HVDCtechnology and related design challenges. The PhD student will learn how to develop multi-physicsmodels for complex systems and how to apply state-of-the-art and/or new numerical techniques to the solution of therelated equations.

Job opportunities

Successful fulfilment of the research program will providethe PhD student with interdisciplinary skills in highdemand at power cable industries operating in the fastgrowing and highly competitive market of HVDCtechnology.
