Many of the items fiom the Hitchcock Collection will be on display during the meeting in the Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Directions to the exhibition in the library: From Henry VIII, travel south on Lindbergh Boulevard to Highway 70. Turn East on the highway, five miles to N. Florissant Road. Turn right (south) on Florissant Road approximately one- quarter mile to the entrance to the University of Missouri- St. Louis. After entering the campus, proceed to the stop sign at the top of the hill, where you will turn right. Approximately one-half mile past the stop sign, you will see the pyramidal glass roof of the library addition (wherein the Mercantile Library is located). Parking is extremely limited on campus, but availability depends strongly on the time of day. There are visitor spaces along West Drive, on which you will be driving, or you can search in the parking structure on your left, just beyond the library. The entrance to Thomas Jefferson Library (in which the Mercantile is located) is on the south side of the building. One enters the Mercantile via the stairway on your left, past the Reference Desk, or using the elevator. The Hitchcock collection will be displayed on Level I, but you should also visit the rest of the Mercantile, including the display of an Audubon elephant porfolio on Level 11.

Ethan Allen Hitchcock (1 798-1 870) was a soldier during the Mexican War and instructor in field tactics at West Point where he taught Lee, Johnston, and Sherman (as well as Edgar Allen Poe!). His highest rank was Major General. He read widely and found an interest in the field of alchemy, where he collected about 250 volumes. The books were donated to the Mercantile Library in 1884, but their location and even the persistence of the intact collection was not widely known to scholars until John Hoover assembled a Guide to the collection in 1989. The present exhibit is the fmt time the books have been on public display.

A special feature of the 35th Midwest Regional Meeting is a History of Chemistry symposium during the morning session on Friday, October 28. Four speakers have been invited:

Professor Wilfred N. Arnold will speak on "Chemicals in the Life of Vincent van Gogh". Professor Arnold, of the University of Kansas Medical Center, is author of Vincent van Gogh: Chemicals, Crises, and Creativity, distributed by Springer-Verlag.

Emeritus Professor Jane A. Miller has served as Historian of the St. Louis Section, ACS, for many years during her tenure at University of Missouri-St. Louis and since her retirement. She will speak on "Chemistry in St. Louis, A History".

Professor William B. Jensen is Oesper Professor of the History of Chemistry and Chemical Education at the University of Cincinnati. He will discuss "The Quest for Noble Gas Compounds".

John Hoover is Director of St. Louis' Mercantile Library, which moved to the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1998. He was also Project Director for the NEH project that produced the Guide to the E. A. Hitchcock Alchemy Collection. He will describe "The Ethan Allen Hitchcock Collection of Alchemy at the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

January 12,2000

Dear Colleagues:

The 35& Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society will be held in St. Louis, October 25 - 28,2000. The venue will be the King Henry VIII Hotel located on Lindbergh Boulevard near Lambert St. Louis International Airport. We expect that this will be the largest ever Midwest Regional Meeting and our target attendance is 1000. We would like to invite your company to display your products and services at the Exposition, which will be an important part of the conference. The presence of major chemical and related companies at the exposition will be an important feature of the meeting. A successful exposition, both from the perspective of the exhibitors and the organizers, will be a major criterion for the success of the meeting. Chemists tend to learn much about products and their availability at conferences and they come to meetings such as this one for comparative exposure to products and services prior to making major purchases.

We have tried to structure the meeting so that you will obtain maximum exposure to conference attendees. The exposition will share space with the exhibition of technical posters and also provision of coffee and related refreshments. It will be on the first floor of the hotel, adjacent to the foyer and to the conference registration area and operations room. We have scheduled the exposition to be open in conjunction with the welcoming poster sessionlmixer on the Wednesday evening, in the mornings on Thursday and Friday and Thursday evening for the poster session. We believe we have planned outstanding technical programs which will attract chemists from industrial and government laboratories, from universities and high schools and from the local medical schools. Symposia with the titles Supramolecular Chemistry, Frontiers of Drug Discovery, Chemistry of Radioactive Drugs, Organometallic Chemistry in Organic Synthesis, Organic/lnorganic Hybrid Materials, Frontiers in Analytical Chemistry, Green Chemistry and the Second Green Revolution, Natural Products, Biotechniques, Chemical Education, and Minority Chemists, are being arranged. In addition contributed papers and posters will be presented in essentially all fields of chemistry. Session chairs for all symposia and contributed paper sessions will periodically remind attendees of the Exposition.

The Midwest Award will be presented on the Thursday evening, and this will follow the Lecture and Social Hour. From 7:00 pm - 10:OO pm a poster session will be held in the exhibit hall and the exposition will be open at this time. The individual technical sessions will be held on the second floor of the hotel but within easy access to the exhibit hall. We are planning facilities for up to 40 exhibits, along with some additional smaller ones sponsored by academic institutions. The basic cost will be $400.00 for a booth with a special reduced price of $200 for academic exhibitors. Each booth will measure 8' x 10' and will include a skirted table, two chairs and an ID

an equal opportunity institution

sign. Peripherals such as electrical power, computer connections, etc. will be available from the hotel and we will provide details, etc. much closer to the meeting. Detailed information about the actual meeting may be obtained by viewing the website: http://www.umsLedu/-acs/mrm.html. The website also provides contact information etc., and will be periodically updated. We intend to list exhibitors on the web-site and also provide the opportunity for hyper-links to their own organization.

There are some details to be finalized such as the floor plan and layout for the exposition, the detailed schedule of events for the period of the conference, and the exhibit rules and regulations. However, we are working with Heritage Exposition Services, a major national company, which assists groups in arranging expositions at conferences and we are confident that we will have an excellent event in which we hope you will participate.

If you are interested in participating, please indicate this on the attached contract form. If you are sure you wish to participate, please enclose a check for $400, made payable to the 351h ACS Midwest Regional Meeting. In order to reserve booth space, we will need to receive a check. Booth assignment etc., will be done on a first come-first served basis so please get in touch with me as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing from you. Please contact me if you have any questions. I am available by e-mail or phone just about every day of the week.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Barton Professor of Chemisty Exposition Chair, 35 ACS Midwest Regional Meeting
