The 36th annual Kamloopa Powwow is scheduled for July 31, August 1 & 2, 2015. The powwow is hosted by the Tk’emlups

te Secwepemc and is held at the ‘special events facility’ along Yellowhead Hwy no.5 and Shuswap Road.

The powwow is to expect 500 dancers and drummers from across Canada and the United States. The powwow attracts over 15,000 spectators over the course of the weekend to take in the colorful

sights and spectacular sounds of the dancers and drummers.

The 3-day celebration begins with opening ceremonies, called grand entry, at 7 pm on Friday. After grand entry there will be intertribal dancing when everyone from all nations may come and

join the circle to dance.

Friday evening will fi nish off with the fi rst round of competition dancing and drumming for contestants of all ages and categories.

The dance categories include traditional, chicken, grass, jingle, fancy bustle, and fancy shawl.

The event will begin Saturday with the powwows second grand entry at noon. Following grand entry will be intertribal dancing and exhibition dancing of tiny tots for children under the age of 6.

During the afternoon session the children ages 7 to 12 and teens will compete in their second round of competition dance categories.

The third grand entry of the powwow is scheduled to be on Saturday evening at 7 pm. During the evening session it will be the second round for the Golden Age and Adult dance categories to compete.

Sunday will begin with the princess pageant at 11 am. The last grand entry of the powwow will begin at noon on Sunday. Following grand

entry there will be intertribals and tiny tot exhibition dancing. The Sunday session will be the fi nal round of competitions for all

dance categories. The powwow will continue throughout the afternoon and into the evening with the crowning of

Pow Wow Princess 2015-2016.

Come and experience the First Nation culture. Everyone is welcome to attend the 36th Annual Kamloopa Powwow. General admission cost

is $10 per day or $20 for a weekend pass. Admission is free for Elders, people with special needs, and children under the age of 6.

DANCE RULES• All contestants must be registered before the start of 12:00 noon grand entry on Saturday, August 1, 2015, and must be wearing the number issued to them (there will be no late regis-tration of dancers);• All dance numbers must be visible to the judges and secretaries during the competitions, grand entries, exhibitions and spot checks;• All contestants must be in grand entry and enter with their category to receive points. The only exception is for dancers registered to the host drum(s), which those dancers must be dressed and are responsible

for giving their numbers to the secretaries before grand entry;• All contestants must be in the exhibition and/or spot checks to receive points. There will be no exceptions;• Each contestant will be judged on skill, dress, and dance ability. Judging will be strictly on a point sys-tem, beginning on Grand Entry Friday as follows: 1st Grand Entry - 75 points, 2nd to 4th Grand Entry - 50 points, Spot Checks/Exhibitions-25 points, 1st place- 50 points, 2nd place- 25 points, 3rd place- 15 points, 4th place- 10 points, Tie Breaker- 1 point• All contestants must be at least (1/4) Native Blood, proof of tribal identifica-

tion/status may be required;• Each contestant must be in full regalia during com-petitions, grand entries, exhibitions/spot checks and to be of the correct gender for that category; • If an eagle feather of a contestant’s regalia falls or is dropped during com-petition then he/she must disqualify him/herself for that session and may be disqualified by the Arena Director or Whipman if the dancer does not disqualify themselves;• Each contestant can reg-ister in only one (1) dance category, with the exception being Specials; and• There is a zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol, if dancers are in possession or

suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alco-hol they will be disqualified from the contest.

DRUM RULES• All lead singers must reg-ister their drum and all of the singers with that drum. Any changes made once the Drum registration form has been submitted to the sec-retaries will be considered as a singer(s) missing from Roll Call and points will be deducted accordingly;• There will be no late regis-tration for drums, all drums must be registered before Drum Roll Call at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015;• No singers are allowed to register to more than

COMPETITION RULESone (1) drum group and no drum hopping. If singers are caught, penalties will be given to that registered drum;• All singers must be pres-ent and ready to sing when called upon, points will be given for drum roll call, intertribal and contest songs. During contest songs all drums will be allowed four (4) starts, during inter-tribal songs all drums will be allowed five (5) leads unless otherwise directed by head staff;• Drummers must keep drum area clean;• All drums must have a min-imum of five (5) singers per group prior to registration and set up;• Intertribals will go in left

to right drum rotation and Contest will go in right to left drum rotation;• There are no drugs or alcohol allowed, if drum-mers are in possession or suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alco-hol they will be disqualified; and• Each drum will be judged on a point system begin-ning on Friday, July 31, 2015 as follows: Present at drum roll call - 10 points for each Grand Entry (1 point deducted for each singer missing), Leads - 5 points (each lead from a different singer is a point), Starts singing when called upon – 5 points, Singing - 5 points, Drumming - 5 points, Appropriate song - 5 points

PAGEANT RULES• All contestants must be 13 to 17 years old; enrolled in high school or another educational institute and must be single having no children or spouse, and be female;Each contestant will be asked to:• Perform one straight dance.• Say a speech on a topic of choice • Perform a talent of choice• Must sell 50/50 tickets starting on Saturday, August 1, 2015.• All contestants will be judged on a point system. There will be a total of one hundred points pos-sible from each judge in

five of the follows: Outfit - 20 points, Dance – 20 points, Speech – 20 points, Talent – 20 points, Poise & Appearance – 20 points (Total – 100 Points).• In addition, the 50/50 tickets sold will be calcu-lated out of 100 points and pro-rated for each contes-tant to their equivalent amount of tickets sold. For example, if the least tickets sold = 1000 and the most tickets sold = 5000, then the contestant who sells the least tickets will get 20 points and the contestant who sells the most tickets will get 100 points. • The successful princess must return the crown; and• The powwow committee will judge the pageant.

1) SHOWER FACILITIES: Showers are available.2) CAMPFIRES: WILL NOT be permitted within any of the camping areas.3) PARENTS PLEASE WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!!!4) PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB: Dancers often leave blankets on the bleachers to reserve their space. Out of respect for the dancers and their families, please do not move or remove any chairs or blankets. 5) RESERVED SEATING: The bleachers to the right and left of the stage are reserved for special guests and elders. The first two rows around the lawn chair seating area are reserved for the dancers and their fam-ilies.6) RECORDERS: Recorders must give mic runners priority to all drums.7) This is an alcohol and drug free event, strictly enforced by security.8) Twenty-four (24) Hour First Aid & Security are located at the north entrance.9) The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and the Kamloopa Powwow Society will not be held responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged articles or injuries.10) PHOTO TAKING: There are appropriate times and places to take pictures. Please do not take pictures surrounding the judges as it may cause interference with contestant number collection, and also no video camera set-up inside the arbor or around the drum areas.
