UTAH INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATIONAPRIL 15, 2016

ABBEY INN AND CONVENTION CENTER • ST. GEORGE, UTAH

WELCOMEGreetings and welcome to the 36th annual UIAAA Conference. Your com-mitment to be in attendance says a lot about your passion to your profes-sion and your student athletes at your school. We hope your participation sends you back with an enthusiasm noticeable to those you work with.

The UIAAA is proud to welcome also the UHSSA staff and members. We have a great working relationship with the state office that makes our organization and theirs work well. We love their support and will continue to strive together to make high school activities and athletics the very best.

The UIAAA is also grateful to the many sponsors who support us financially and emotionally. Our working partnership with them is a huge part of what drives this organization. Please make sure you stop by and visit them during their time here.

We also look forward to hearing from former University of Utah and Weber State Coach Ron McBride this year. Coach Mac is an icon who loves the state of Utah and we feel so fortunate to have him with us in St. George. I guarantee you his message to us will be one you won’t forget.

I am also happy to announce for those of you who haven’t heard, Richard Barton from Richfield High School has been elected as the President-elect of the NIAAA. This is probably one of the most significant things to ever happen to our state and organization. Richard is well deserving of this honor and will do a tremendous job. We have also had many others receive awards at the National Conference in the past several years that we are very proud of. At the most recent conference in Orlando, the late Bud Campbell was enshrined in the NIAAA Hall of Fame and Ted Petersen received the NIAAA Citation. Utah is looked at as a leader on the national level.

Again we are excited to have you here. We hope this is the best conference ever.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you.

Sincerely,

David Boyack, CAAUIAAA PresidentAthletic DirectorMaple Mountain High School

Legendary football coach, Ron McBride has been coaching players on and off the field for over fifty years. He first came to Utah in 1977 to work as offensive coordinator for the University of Utah and in 1990, he was hired as the head coach. McBride inherited a program that had only had five win-ning seasons in the previous 16 years. In his own words, McBride says, “Utah was a soft program, an underachieving program and a program that was going nowhere.” He didn’t take long to turn the program around. In his second season, he posted a 7–5 record. A year later, he led the Utes to the 1992 Copper Bowl, the pro-gram’s first bowl appearance in 28 years. His best season came in 1994 when the Utes won a then-record 10 games and at-tained the highest post-season ranking, at the time, in school history climbing to No. 8 in the USA Today/ESPN poll.

He took the Utes to six bowl games during his tenure, a noteworthy feat considering the Utes had played in just three bowl games in the previous 97 years. During his tenure at Utah, McBride posted an over-all record of 88–63 (.582), the second most wins by a coach in the history of Utah football. In conference games, he guided the Utes to a 58–42 record and won a share of two conference championships. He is credited with laying the foundation for Utah’s rise to national promi-nence under Urban Meyer and his former defensive coordina-tor, Kyle Whittingham. After leaving Utah, McBride took over as the inside linebacker coach at Kentucky in 2003. He returned to Utah in 2004, when he was named head football coach at Weber State University.
